The Cholera District is full of craftsmen's forges, worshops and smitheries. Here the raw materials from the outside world are brought into the City to be worked before they are refined into specific items, or distributed to artis, alchemists, and other tradespeople. It's most striking feature is the North Gate, which is a massive crenulated wall that leads out into the Forests of the North.

Mandrake Harvest : A September Event!!

The Event:
Well, with a bit of research and a little prophecy, the Chorus has had to face the fact that War may be looming on the horizon for Empyrean City. If it can be avoided, steps will be taken. But it never hurts to be prepared. It is for this reason that the Chorus have temporarily suspended one of the City's laws. Empyreans will be allowed out of the City under a heavily chaperoned guard of Gatekeepers to accompany and assist Professora Quenda harvest some Mandrake root. As you may know, Mandrake is required for some of the most complicated to make but msot potent Alchemical recipees, not to mention being extremely potent for Druidic Magic. However, mandrakes are finicky, dangerous things. And as such, they are not allowed to be grown within Empyrean City - not even within the safety of the Flora Gardens. The mandrake can permenantly deafen younger Empyreans with their wails, and their toxins can easily kill off other plants, even though they are harmless to mortals. For this reason they are planted and grown in the forests just north of the Green Gate, where the harvesting party will head to bring some Mandrake root - safely cut- back into the City.

The Teams:
The Empyreans have been paired off as follows:
Team Alpha: Antigone ~ Daggart
Team Beta: Blayk ~ Grave
Team Gamma: Cashimer ~ Kallisto
Team Delta: Danna ~ Arwen
Team Epsilon: Cyphr ~ Aysel
Team Zeta: Abacus ~ Lior
Team Theta: Galadrae ~ Torrid
Team Lamda: Ubel ~ Jakov
Team Psi: Lucis ~ Nadyrr
Team Rho: Sombre ~ Jala
Team Sigma: Astaroth ~ Dariyn
Team Tau: Jaenelle ~ Belwen
Team Chi: Arron ~ Biwa
Team Nu: Zethyr ~ Mathiaz
Team Mu: Emrys ~ Yambati
Team Kappa: Morrow ~ Fenna
Team Omega: Quenda ~ Vanga
Remember to quote your Team name when answering Tasks so that our resident RP Manager knows where to record your Mandrake points.

The Rules:
If you are interested in taking part, you must sign up before Sept 7th. The Event will not begin until Sept 17th, and will run until September 23rd, so be prepared. Once all those volunteering have signed up, Quenda will pair them off into groups of two to work together. After a brief instruction on how to properly harvest Mandrake root, each Team will be sent off to complete Tasks. There is no minimum to the number of Tasks you must complete, but each completed Task counts as 1 Mandrake root. At the end of the Event you may trade in your Mandrake Roots for 2 Lune Credits per root - that means 1 Lune each. So work together, help each other the best you can. Quenda will specifically be pairing Teams based on diversity in the member's personalities and talents in the hopes that they will round each other out to make an effective team.
There will be a Quenda Plushie for all involved and a pair of soundproof Technoequip Goggles for every participant who completes at least 1 Task.

The Tasks:
There will be a grossly huge amount of Tasks posted during the event. Somewhere to the tune of 15 per day = 105 Tasks all together.
No one is excpected to complete all Tasks. All Task answers will be posted in the Cholera District thread, along with the rest of the RP. Our RP Manager, Elysia will be keeping track of the correct answers that can be traded in by each Team at the end of the event. You only need to post 1 Answer per Team, so communication is a must. No, not both members need to work on 1 Task in order to post the Answer, this means is you have difficulty corresponding due to time zones, never fear. Just respond in the guild RP as best you can.
The Team with the highest number of completed Tasks at the end of the event (after the closing post by Quenda) will gain access to a Limited Addition: Avian Crown, which has the Demonic version and the Angelic version. (image to come shortly). If more than 1 Team ties, all will gain access to the Limited Addition.
In the event that some Adventurous Team actually completes the entire Task list, all who have will be entered into a free raffle for the Amber Abberation. Remember, all Tasks must be completed prior to Quenda's closing post!

The Prizes:
Credit for Botany Class: Since the event will be coinciding with our Botany class fairly well, all those who wish to complete out of class credit by taking part in the Event instead of doing a full class may complete 5 RP posts and 30 Tasks during the event for a full Botany Class Credit.
The Quenda Plushie:

The Headphones:

The Avian Crown ~ Demonic version:
The Avian Crown ~ Angelic version:

The Dates:
September 17th to September 23rd.
Sign up before September 7th to be part of a Team. If you miss this deadline, you may still watch in ((OOC posts)) to get a Plushie.

Get your Green Thumbs ready~

Every student had their pair of Headphones, so Quenda grinned out at them, hers firmly in place. "Now then, some of you may be asking why you need headphones to harvest Mandrake root. The answer is this: The mandrake is a volatile plant, and has a foul temper. During the growth phase, the Mandrake root sends out tremours through the soil which can render a plant barren or even kill it. For this reason, it is forbidden to grow them within the City walls. This means we must harvest them from the plantation just beyond the North Gate. The tremours the mandrake sends out take an auditory frequency when they are pulled from the earth and exposed to light. Even subtle light like that from moonlight or stars causes this reaction, so we wear these Headphones to protect our hearing. Actually lsitening to a mandrake scream without protection can render the Empyrean permanently deaf." Quenda paused and grinned broadly. "Isn't that interesting, everyone?" Then she began walking between the groups paired off in front of her.
"You have all been paired off into groups of two, so work together and help each other. At the beginning of each day we are outside of the walls, you'll be given a list of tasks. Each completed task will enable us to harvest One Mandrake Root. When you've gathered your roots, please bring them back to me, so that we can tally them up. At the end of the event, we'll pay you 1 lune each for each mandrake root you managed to procure. Are you ready?" Quenda grinned at them.

The group of four Gatekeepers approached the Flora Gardens, keen to meet their new charges. Mandrake stores were low, they knew, and thus the harvest had been arranged. Led by Danek, a pale, wintry Three of wolfish appearance, they eased into the gardens, pausing only long enough to count those young ones gathered and look for Quenda.

While Danek spoke with Quenda, reporting in and confirming departure times, numbers, and the rest, Lorissa, Vorrian, and Taevis wandered among the students. Choleric Taevis’ fae-like appearance made him seem almost like a spirit guardian as he stopped and helped a few of the students out with their technorings. Dragonfly wings twitched occasionally while his felis antennae quivered frequently despite his easy smile and calm manner.

On the other hand, the second Choleric, Vorrian, seemed far more earthly in comparison. The centaur kept to the edges, surveying those gathered before him with glowing green eyes, smiling as well as he moved so that he could join the conversation with Danek and Quenda.

The melancholic naga, Lorissa, remained where she was, garnet and black scales glittering in the light as she crossed her arms, far more content to watch and learn then interact. She was here to do a job, not babysit. And while the zeros were vital to the city, duty came before niceties. Perhaps, should they seek her out, she might be open. As it was, intense grey eyes took stock for the time being.

“As you requested, we’ve arrived a little early to introduce ourselves and go over the procedures with you.” Danek’s voice was gruff but quiet, icy blue eyes easily meeting Quenda’s.

“Are these the final numbers?” Vorrian inquired, as he approached, swishing his equine tail against his haunches, “All is ready on our end.”

Danek nodded, grunting agreement before turning away to lean against a nearby tree, his white and icy, pale blue coat standing our starkly against the lush greens and browns of the vegetation. His ears remained perked, however, as he continued to listen to Quenda and Vorrian.

Quenda grinned broadly as her Gatekeepers arrived. The final touches. To behold them, she was eased of any last worries she mgiht have had. They looked very competant, and most formidable. "Ah, hello!" Quenda greeted them and conversed shortly about the Teams and the length of their journey.
"Everyone, these four will be our protectors outside the City. If they should give you an order, understand that it is for your own safety and comply immediately. Failure to do so will result in you being brought before the Chorus." Quenda paused for a moment, to make sure they were all listening and then cleared her throat. "Without further ado, may I introduce Danek, Taevis, Lorissa and Vorrian." She indicated each magnificent three as she called their names and then stood tall on her talons. "And we're off. If you'll all keep in double file with your Teammate, and follow me!!"

Nadyrr watched the three given the title of protectors a moment. His eyes slightly wide they were definantly a bit intimidating...then again so was his partner. Glancing over at Lucis from the corner of his eye he studied him a moment...the other boy definantly looked older. Then again Nadyrr reminded himself that Lucis was a stage one and so he should look older. The reminder didn't hlep Nadyrr feel less uneasy however, as they started off he looked to his taller partner and nodded slightly speaking softly and hoping the other had his headphones set so he could hear at least for now. "Uhm...seems we are partners...my name is Nadyrr." Nadyrr didn't waste much time with talking but hrried along so as to not lose his place alongside his much taller partner.

Psi Team answers from Nadyrr, odd numbered

1. Mandrake
3. Middle covert: mid-sized feathers of the wing
Down feathers: small fathers of the wing.
Alula: feathers of the leading eadge of the wing, attached to the thumb bone.
Middle primary covert: mid-sized feathers covering the wing.
Primary covert: feathers forming the contour of the wing.
Primaries: the largest feathers on the edge of a bird's wing.
Secondaries: large feathers between the primaries and the tertials on a birds wing.
Great coverts: large feathers covering the wings.
Scapulars: shoulder feathers.
Mirror: Not different feathers but an area formed by the primaries that has metallic coloring.
Tetrial: What the innermost part of the large feathers on a bird's wings is called.

5. 5.Owl (Cailleach, Oidhche, Comachag): These birds were most often associated with the Crone aspect of the Goddess. The word "cailleach" in the Scottish-Gaelic means "owl". The owl is often a guide to and through the Underworld, a creature of keen sight in darkness, and a silent and swift hunter. It can help unmask those who would deceive you or take advantage of you.

In Ancient Greek mythology the Owl was a creature sacred to Athena, Goddess of the night who represented wisdom. Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom had a companion Owl on her shoulder, which revealed unseen truths to her. Owl had the ability to light up Athena's blind side, enabling her to speak the whole truth, as opposed to only a half truth.

The demoness Lilith is thought to have been associated with (screech) owls as well, by way of the King James version of the bible translation of the passage in Isaiah 34:14:

14The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.

Prior to the rise of Islam, owls were considered bad omens and associated with evil spirits in most Middle Eastern pagan traditions. In modern times, although such superstitions are less prevalent, owls are still popularly considered "evil" because of their fierce, horrific appearance.

7. Pocahontas

9.Evergreen: a plant having foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.

11.Yggdrasil

13. Venus Flytrap

15.Açaí Palm is a member of the genus Euterpe, which contains 7 species of palms native to tropical Central and South America, from Belize south to Brazil and Peru, growing mainly in floodplains and swamps.

At the sign that they were moving, Belwen's eyes got rather wide and she started looking around the area. Smiling to her partner she studied the rather somber girl as they moved along. "Isn't it exciting to get to go out like this? And important too...getting these mandrakes will be lots of fun and educational." Belwen lost track of her ramblings as they progressed trying to not miss anything of this rare chance for a stage zero.

Team Tau answers for Belwen, even numbers

2. Choleric

4. Pheonix

6. A wild animal binds itself to ether much like a Empyrean does to become a cicus animal.

8. Chinese Ginseng (panax ginseng), Siberian ginseng (eleuthero), and American ginseng (panax quinquefolium).

10. The chinampas or floating gardens were used to created more land for farming in marshy and swamplike areas. 3 sister farming is taking the cultivation of maize, beans, and squash at the same time. Beans grew on the trellis of the cornstalks and squash covered the planting mounds in order to retain moisture in the soil. This made it so no land went unused.

12. C. kingii
R. sulfuratus
S. occidentalis
C. americanus
C. caninus
A. callidryas
H. syndactylus
X. minutus
G. Alouatta
P. cinereus

14. potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, tobacco

Emrys was, admittedly, a bit nervous about going outside of the White District. But everyone said that it should be safe ... and he had a partner, too. Yambati seemed nice enough, though Emrys wished he could have gone with Arron. Ah well ... better get going ...

Morrow, on the other hand, looked rather eager to go. He had a sketchbook and a variety of pencils, as well as charcoal, and even a few colored pastels. He wanted to see what was outside, wanted to draw it ... not so much focused on the task at hand as on his own goals for the day. But still, he was here, so he would try to look for Mandrakes as well...

Mat was waiting on Zethyr to show up before he left to look for Mandrakes. He'd seen the other around before, of course, and he kind of wondered how well this was going to go. But he wasn't complaining, also eager to get to see something of the world outside the White District.

Kallisto was excited and smiling broadly as she fiddled with her headphones, adjusting it so that she could hear well enough despite their coverage. She looked a little goofy but she didn't care. Checking who her partner was, the cheerful sanguine bid Yambati a fond farewell, embracing him a moment, before searching out Cashimer. When she found him, she stopped at his side and beamed as her gaze swept out over the Gatekeepers who had been assembled. "Impressive, huh?" She asked conversationally, turning back to him, "Excited partner?"

----

Daggart milled about, watching the centaur and was struck with a certain sense of pride. He couldn't explain it, but of the four Gatekeepers he found he liked Vorrian the most - perhaps it was the way he carried himself or the certain easy confidence he and the others possessed, Daggart wasn't sure. Smiling, he turned back to the tasks at hand and quickly activated his headphones.

It was time to explore!

---

in the meantime, had remained by Danna's side unwilling to mingle as the others seemed to be. As Taevis passed by, he shook his head - these technorings weren't so difficult to figure out. As Quenda called out the rules and then ordered them into line, he slipped the headphones about his neck and sighed. "I suppose I should find my partner then." He cast Danna a brief, parting smile, and went in search of this... Dairyn. He'd never met the boy and hoped that he hadn't been stuck with an energetic kinesthetic.

Ubel was one who was... definitely intrigued about going outside, but certainly quite nervous about it. For they had been told, time and again, that it was dangerous out there... He was determined, though, to do all that he could to ensure he did his best in this task - or set of tasks, it seemed. Such an interesting new event... Ubel sighed softly, looking around a little for Jakov and shifting awkwardly.

Lior was pumped. He was excited and kicking and ready to go, ready to rumble and ready to see all there was to see. He grinned happily as he bounced into line, nearly wriggling with all the excitement he felt over this. He got to go OUT, to see the Outside and do crazy things while he was at it. This was awesome! He bounced on the balls of his feet, humming happily all the while.

Arwen had been making her way to find her partner - Danna, so she was told - passing Astaroth with a nod of acknowledgement. She was peaceful, which was usually not a good sign; indeed, she was quite unnerved at the idea of leaving all the was familiar and safe for roots. She had to keep telling herself that she'd have to go out eventually, but it didn't help settle her skipping heart in her chest.

Crimson eyes shifted around, lighting on Grave, and then Lucis. If she wanted to be a One...if she wanted to catch up...she had to do this. The girl was no good at putting on a brave face, so she kept her standard neutral expression instead.

Yambati hadn't really gotten a chance to speak with his partner yet. However, he didn't mind - having a partner was more of a means to an end. He was excited to work with the mandrakes; this was his first chance to work with the exotic, dangerous plants... and he hoped he'd get to do this again, albeit in a slightly different setting.

Grave took a deep breath and smoothed down his jacket. The Gatekeepers that had been sent along with them were impressive to say the least, and he found himself staring most uncoothly for a few long moments before bustling himself into line. He looked down to see his partner. The lists had said her name was Blayk.
"Hello," Grave greeted. "Are you any good with plants?" Grave offered a friendly smile and a slight bow. He hoped she was, because he was terrible with them. As soon as he touched a plant it withered, so likely as soon as he touched a mandrake, he expected it'd scream twice as loud. He fastidiously double-checked his headphones just in case.

Danna stood next to Astaroth, pressing her shoulder into his as she waited. She was excited, without a doubt. So much so that her skin actually tingled. Then a pretty little Melancholic approached and Danna blinked. Who was she? When the girl continued to stand beside her and Astaroth moved off to find his partner, Danna began to put two and two together. "Are you Arwen, by chance?" Danna murmured, not wanting to be too loud in case she was wrong. "Team Delta, right?" Danna asked, offering a shy smile.

"WHICH ONE IS AYSEL??" Cyphr bellowed, looking up and around at all these students. Aysel, Aysel, which one was she?? "Cummon Aysel!" Cyphr hollared as if cheering on dice. "Cummon Team Espilly! Cummon Mandrakes!! Yah!!" Cyphr hadn't figured out how to set his Headphones and was completely unaware of how very loud he was being. The things clamped tightly over his big ears and that was good enough for him. He didn't want no deafness, thank you!

Cashimer grinned as Kallisto came to stand beside him, unable to help the feeling of excitement that stirred within him. From he understood, this was something out of the norm, letting zeros leave the city like this. Fighting back his usual silence, arguing to himself that he had met the Sanguine before, and that Lior liked her well enough, so there was nothing for him to be... afraid of. Yes. Nothing to be afraid of at all. "This is pretty impressive... I'm glad I got to be included in on this. And with such a wonderful partner," he added, a genuine smile curving his lips upwards. "I'm pretty excited, yeah. You?"

Antigone bounced on the balls of her feet as she took her place next to Daggart, looking around in amazement. There was just so much to take in! She envied the boy she had seen briefly in class the other day, who had that camera with him... What she wouldn't give to be able to capture all of this in photos, to be remembered and cherished forever. It seemed she was simply going to have make as detailed a journal entry as possible, once everything was said and done.

Blayk made sure the headphones around her ears fit snuggly- the last thing she wanted to do was go deaf, or worse. Stomping out with the other students, it was the very definition of simple to find Grave. He stuck out like a sore thumb, with all those additions of his. "I'm not horrible with plants, if that's what you mean," she said off-handedly, tilting her head to one side, studying him. She supposed that he wasn't the worst partner she could have gotten stuck with, from what she had heard about him from the other students. She hadn't been eaves-dropping, really... Just listening to this person's comments, and this such and such's conversation. "I haven't killed any of the plants I've happened to be around for any length of time, anyway. You?"

The lithe girl inclined her head to Danna, relieved that she'd found her partner without having to scour the rest of the people. "I am," she confirmed verbally, extending a delicate hand out of politeness, "Delta it is. A pleasure to meet you, Danna." Her own smile was quiet and demure, with only a bare trace of her deeply hidden fear.

Arwen reached up to touch her headphones with her free hand, her placid expression as blank as ever, save for that small smile. "I hope I can do this," she murmured softly, albeit earnestly, "I'm quite uncertain about this whole botany and outside thing."
