The time signatures? Because I had to do my brother's band homework (gee, I wonder why he decided for ME to do it? stare ) and there were a few time signatures I didn't understand.
What note gets the beat in 5/4, 9/8, and 12/3?
^_^

^_^ 5/4 = same as 4/4 but with an extra beat 9/8 = 9 beats in a measure, 8th note gets the beat (Quater note gets half note worth in time, half note gets whole note worth in time, etc etc) 12/3 = 12 beats in a measure, the dotted half note gets the beat. I am not sure how that one sounds, but it might be interesting to try.

We played a song in 5/4 and a song in 9/8 in jazz band this year. Both were by Brubeck. They were rather fun. ^^ Especially the 9/8.

Coolos, thanks all. ^.^
All I've ever played were like...the easy time signatures. Like common time -slash- 4/4 and 3/4 and 2/4. And 6/8 and stuffs.
Hmm. Is there a 1/4? O:

What note gets the beat in 5/4, 9/8, and 12/3?
^_^ something kinda corny to remember but here it is . . . 5/4 = 5 beats a measure and the quarter note gets the beat 9/8 = 9 beats a measure and the eighth note gets the beat and I have NEVER heard of 12/3 in my life . . . . . so I don't know what to tell ya there. Just remember that the top note is how many notes are in the measure and the bottom note is what note gets the beat. for ex: 3/16 = 3 beats a measure and the 16th note gets the beat. I hope that helps. I played Mars for marching band my sophmore year and it's in 5/4 and then Blue Rondeau a La Turk is in 9/8 or 12/8 I don't remember well, but they're really awesome.

[****] -- Ever heard of Liturgical Dances? We're playing it. Let me list the time signatures for you. In the first part, there's 4/4, 3/4, 5/4. After, there's 2/4, 3/8, and 6/8 introduced. All the bars are alternating and crap...then, in the end there's 4/2, 2/2, 3/2, 12/8 and 9/8 introduced. Just learn to count. <3 --

^_^ i've had some of those: in 5/4: usually conducted in 3, then 2. like | 1, 2, 3, 1, 2 | 1, 2, 3, 1, 2 | I dont really konw about 9/8, but i would guess 3, then 3, then 3. | 1, 2, 3 | 1, 2, 3 | and 12/3 I have never heard of. 3 meaning triplets? I've played lots of time signatures...like in America by Leonard Bernstein, it alternates every bar....frm 3/4 to 6/8. and in Serenade a concert piece i've played, it goes in 11/8, 7/8, and 13/8....confusing....0.o I personally liked 3/2....we played it in Cool by Leonard Bernstein. (I did West Side Story)

Hmm. Is there a 1/4? O: I don't think it's ever actually given as a time signature, but a lot of times, when you're playing at Vivace or faster, it'll say "In One" next to it. That just means the conductor will give just the downbeat.

In concert band we do a lot.
This year is the first year we've had to march 9/8 sweatdrop It's a little nerve racking, but I've caught myself marching in time to Bulgarian Dances, when we were playing it in concert band so..

Bleh. Our band has. I hate it. :/ It's so annoying to count because they drilled the pattern they were using into our heads since apperantly there are alternatives to it.
After class we all were singing the beats.
