Start at the back of the hair, do the bangs last. Begin by chunking the main parts of the hair and coloring them in the darkest colors. Highlight the brightest parts in a 3-D style, with very little dark lines. Then go over it in an even brighter color, this time making sure to leave individual lines. Finish up with the highlights so that the brightest parts are brightest and that the outlines are light enough to match the color of the hair, and then begin the bangs. Do the same thing with the bangs that you did wth the hair, slowly highlighting your way to a hiarstyle. Finally go back and add small wisps of hair (make sure they are at least 2 or 3 pixels wide, usually) and enhance any expecially light/dark parts as needed. After that, your hair should be done.

Same deal for curly, just overlap hair with itself a lot more with the curls of the hair. heart

And use a similar strategy for down and wavy hair; chunk, undertone, highlight and then detail. heart heart
edit: I have a request for anyone who has used/plans to use this tutorial in the future--while I would totally reccomend using it to learn how hair falls/shines etc, and while I don't mind if you use these hairstyles in your own gaian avatar edit shops, could you please not submit them to petitions as your own work with no mention of me? I've found several of these hairstyles in various petitions across gaia "done by" other people...with no reference to this tutorial or me, when they were clearly eyeballed/copied from here. Its just...kind of rude.
I will do another hair tutorial, more zoomed in, for straight hair.
