Joy leads the partiers out towards the edge of the forest, where the Accolades have mostly dispersed, although some linger, either out of curiosity or fondness for their riders.

All participants are led to a table to prepare for the next game, on which are collected a variety of items. You may choose to select from between a stick and a whistle to assist you in your next task. You may also choose to team up with another player, which may provide you with an advantage, so make your arrangements for that now!

She is joined here by a hideous monster: a giraffe-like creature which tippy-taps its front paws and hind hooves in excitement, its long neck scaled with the heads of many hounds. It is making little huffing barks as she speaks, like a dog that is excited to play a game, and the base of its neck has been outfitted with a collar on which there have been loosely tied many brightly-colored ribbons, each one bearing a little ring.

“This is Palamedes,” says Joy, giving one of the creature’s foreheads an affectionate pat. “She is a questing beast: a beast designed to be hunted, if the stories are to be believed. I’m too fond of her to want her to come to any harm, but she still makes for a good chase.”

At this, she gives the Summons a thump to the flank, at which it bolts off into the forest, baying in a voice like a dozen foxhounds all giving cry at once.

“Your goal is to get close enough to her, using your own wits and the tools you received before this, and snag one of the rings from her collar. The gold rings are worth more points than the wooden, and a ring still on its ribbon is worth more points, as proof of your hunting prowess. Bring it back to me as proof of your success!”

Please include the following at the top of your post:

    Character name:
Competing for: (name of your Fair One, if you have one)
    Cooperating with: if applicable
    Points earned:

Pal, Joy’s Summons, is frolicking in the woods! Trap, corner, chase, or lure her out to get one of the rings from her collar.

gaia_star If you picked a stick, take +1 to your roll. Pal can be lured with the stick, or you can throw it to direct her to a place that makes her easier for you to catch - or to your partner, if you have one!
gaia_star If you picked a whistle, you may reroll once, but you MUST take the second roll. Blowing on the whistle will make Pal bark, and give you an idea of where she is.

You can also compete to catch Pal cooperatively, if you want to attempt a bonus point and gamble on your mutual success - please pick a partner and arrange the cooperation OOC first! Roll your die, including any modifiers, and then average your combined points together by adding them and dividing by two (rounding up), and add one point to your final point score. Your average and bonus points will be awarded to both of your Fair Ones, and if you are competing for the same Fair One, they will receive the points twice!

Roll 1d10 for your outcome:
Quote:

1: You have failed miserably to even find Pal. You might even keep hearing her barking, but she keeps eluding you. You return empty handed, for zero points.
2-4: It’s a difficult trial, but you at least manage to get just within grasp of Pal’s collar, and catch one of the rings by the tips of your fingers, which comes off in your hand. You can bring it back to Joy to earn 1 point.
5-6: You catch hold of one of the golden rings after getting close to your quarry, and it falls off into your hand. Bring it back to Joy for 2 points.
7-9: You manage to keep Pal’s attention long enough to secure one of the wooden rings as well as the ribbon it’s attached to. Bring it back to Joy for 3 points.
10: Piece of many-mouthed cake. You secure both a gold ring and the ribbon it hangs from, and can return it to Joy for 4 glorious points.

At the end of the game, before the finale, all players tied at the highest score, if applicable, will be selected from via RNG to choose a single winner, who will also receive a bonus point and a prize during the ending ceremony.

After all the hunters have returned - and Pal is snoozing peacefully in the shade of the bailey walls, happy and exhausted - they are collected around a table, on which are a variety of writing implements and pieces of parchment, as well as a basket containing many folded slips of paper tied in string. Each participant should get themselves ready for… writing?

[[If you picked a stick, take +1 to your roll (3+1=4)]]
[2-4: It’s a difficult trial, but you at least manage to get just within grasp of Pal’s collar, and catch one of the rings by the tips of your fingers, which comes off in your hand. You can bring it back to Joy to earn 1 point.]

It had been pleasant to spend time with the Accolade, she had called her Cream since she had all these white spots over her tawny fur, almost like the Accolade had gotten into white paint or ice cream. It wasn’t a very inspired name but it did its job. Botein spent quite a while just chatting to and brushing the wondrous creature. Neither she nor Cream seemed terribly interested in the jousting that was occurring, although Botein did watch and cheer on others. Instead Cream was nice enough to just go for a ride with Botein on her back. They didn’t go very far, more or less lapped the small green meadow. They were racing against no one and yet they both had a blast. Or at least the senshi liked to think that the Accolade had a grand old time racing the wind. She knew she did!

But finally they were both tired so reluctantly Botein dismounted and after a final pat and scratch at that one spot that Cream apparently loved, the young woman made her way back towards the rest of the party. After a bit they were led towards the edge of the forest, Botein was looking around to see if her new friend was there but apparently Cream had wandered off somewhere. Ah well, there was always later. Instead the strawberry blonde focused on the table in front of them, eyeing the objects on it but not taking either.

This time she focused completely on Joy and everything the knight had to say. When the new creature came out of the shadows Botein did nothing more than blink. It was an odd amalgamation of creatures. A giraffe and several dogs. Back hooves of the giraffe but front paws of one very long legged dog. A neck as long as a giraffe but covered in many many dog heads. It was not anything she had seen before, nothing she could put a name on at least. Not even when Joy called it a questing beast. The only ones Botein could think of were the white does from stories, and this Palamedes was definitely not a deer.

It was this information, and eyeing the collar secured around the questing beast’s neck, that had Botein reaching for a stick. Her rough idea of the next challenge was proven correct when Joy charged them all to gather one of the rings that had been loosely tied to the collar on Palamedes before it had been sent off into the forest. It was a game of chase. Botein was good at games of chase! She had plenty of practice at it during her part-time jobs although she was much more used to normal, Earth, dogs.

Lopping off into the trees with her stick, Botein followed the sound of the barking. The chase was on!

Quite some time later, after using her stick to play fetch, Botein exited the forest with one ring, sans ribbon. Palamedes was a true challenge! While Botein had been able to get the creature to chase after the stick she wasn’t able to get it to bring it back. It was by sheer luck and determination that the young woman had brushed against one of the rings on the collar. Snagging it with the tips of her fingers. She might not have been the best at it but she had at least succeeded and that was something at least!

Grieve wasn't the best at playing with "pets" but she sure could throw a ******** stick. It helped that her accolade decided to block the creature in long enough for her to snatch a ring and slap its a**.

Maybe be she actually will give it something to eat.

Competing for: Herself
Cooperating with: Herself
Points earned: 4

Tempesti’s accolade seemed interested in accompanying her on her hunt, going so far as to nudge a stick on the table. Clearly it wanted to play along with whatever happened here, even if it couldn’t be an active participant in the actual event. Tempesti had never seen Palamedes before, but she found the summon utterly fascinating. She was unlike anything she’d ever seen before. Hildegarde apparently agreed, hovering just out of her reach as she studied it with a series of curious clucks before it dashed away from the revelers.

Keeping an eye on her cosmic companion, the senshi hurried into the forest after the knight’s friend. It took a surprisingly short amount of time for her to locate the happily frolicking creature. Holding out the stick the accolade had selected, she waited for her to approach. Delighted that Pal seemed interested, Tempesti carefully reached forward and managed to snag both a golden ring and the ribbon on which it hung, leaving the stick on the ground for the summons to take if she wanted to.

“Thank you, Palamedes!”

With a smile, she headed back toward Joy with her prize in hand.

Character name: Sailor Bacchus
Competing for: Hildegard (He'll accept points in her honor)
Cooperating with: Himself
Points earned: 2

Sailor Bacchus was a bit relieved to have parted ways with his cranky accolade, it was definitely an animal better enjoyed from a distance with a drink in hand. To say that the sight of the “questing beast” as Joyeuse Garde called it was unsettling would be a gross understatement. His breath grew shallow and he felt the bile rise in his throat even as it clenched shut. Too many faces, too many voices, too many eyes, fused together by gods know what. He jumped back involuntarily as the summons charged into the forest, the speed with which it moved providing him with an odd sense of relief. Of course. She was alive. All of the faces were her own, her body was sound and healthy as she did exactly what it was created to do.

The deep space senshi shook his head as his horrified muscles loosened just a fraction. It wasn’t as…horrifying as his body initially wanted to believe it was. Forcing himself to unfreeze, he plastered a cocky grin across his face. This was a competition, after all, and he was there to win honor for his fair one, even as she flapped enthusiastically after the thing. Hopefully her interest in this was limited to being chased, not necessarily in hunting for its own food. Picking up a stick from the table, he loped into the woods after his quarry. In another lifetime he’d have pursued astride his own mount, gleefully charging forward as the master of revels. But even on foot he could allow the adrenaline to course through his veins, chasing a strange beast through an alien forest. Definitely not going to allow that paralysis to give a repeat performance once he saw it again. It was a living, breathing, healthy happy thing. Healthy. Not half a step from death and pulled along by a will other than its own. Yes. Definitely.

Following the sound of baying mouths, he managed to spot the strange being in a clearing between the trees.

“Hey, Palamedes!”

Bacchus held the stick aloft, grabbing the creature’s attention before tossing it. While the summons was distracted he sprang forward, just managing to hook one of the golden rings as she prepared to sprint off once more. He inhaled sharply as he anticipated the sensation of his fingers brushing across its fur. Its cleanish, living fur. Mercifully, he felt nothing. The ribbon eluded him, but this shiny little prize was proof enough of his obviously incomparable hunting prowess. He chuckled softly at the hyperbole, trees passing at his much more leisurely pace as he walked back to where he had last seen Joyeuse Garde. Idly fiddling with the ring as he approached the knight, he was glad that he hadn’t returned empty handed. “Managed to snag myself one of these little things.” It was significantly closer to dignified than his performance during the last event. Even if he found her summons not quite entirely terrifying. Hopefully no one noticed that. That would be far more embarrassing than landing haphazardly on his a**.

Character name: Ekstrom
Competing for: Herself
Cooperating with: No one
Points earned: Rerolling

If you picked a whistle, you may reroll once, but you MUST take the second roll. Blowing on the whistle will make Pal bark, and give you an idea of where she is.

The jousting had been a bit of a surprise, and while Nim--the name she and her accolade had agreed on by the time they made it to the lists--had made excited little huffing noises and started sort of shuffling her hooves at the sight of the potential competition, ultimately (and with a little bit of bribery by way of more snacks) they had opted out of the contest. Ekstrom found a way to get on Nim's back and they went for a lap or two while watching instead. Nim, for her part, seemed more than content to be distracted by a slow but constant supply of snacks as they went, and Ekstrom cheered for the participants on the sidelines until it eventually all came to an end.

"Well," the Knight said as she landed back on the ground and turned to give Nim a few pats on her back and smooth out where she'd been sitting. She waited until the last minute before fully starting into her goodbye, watching until the participants started being led off to the next event. "It's been fun. I'm out of snacks though, and it looks like I'll have to be on foot for the next one, so." She gave Nim a little kiss on the nose and said, "See you next time, hopefully?"

This earned her a softer little huff and another nuzzle before Nim raised her head, turned, and started off back toward the woods.

Ekstrom gave a little sigh as she watched her new friend go, though her smile made a brief return as she watched Nim settle down just at the edge, by a tree, baby blue eyes settled on her. She waved once more before turning and heading off toward everyone else.

Coming upon a table, she swiped a whistle thinking it might be helpful in case she got lost somehow (rather than something to use for the upcoming event), and listened to the instructions. Her eyes were steady on the questing beast they'd all just been introduced to. Palamedes, she called it? Hideous or not, its manner reminded her somewhat of Lulu when she got excited, and she again couldn't help but smile fondly at the memory of her pup even amidst what she imagined would be particularly challenging if the speed at which the beast ran off into the woods was any indication. She didn't let it deter her, though, and looking down at the whistle in her hand she wondered if maybe she'd picked a little too hastily...

Looking back up and at the woods they were meant to follow Palamedes into, though...maybe not.

So off she went, feeling even less confident than she had been when she'd gone into the woods looking for an accolade just a few hours earlier. She wasn't sure how long she'd already been looking, but it felt like a while and when she came up with absolutely nothing she considered her whistle. Sure, maybe it'd alert someone to her whereabouts, but it also might catch the beast's attention, right?

Blinking, she drew in a deep breath, put the whistle to her lips, and blew.

5-6: You catch hold of one of the golden rings after getting close to your quarry, and it falls off into your hand. Bring it back to Joy for 2 points.

The sound of baying foxhounds echoed in the woods to her left, and she immediately got moving. She didn't have to run far before spotting the beast, and she froze as soon as she did. Palamedes was seated but panting, as though she'd been running about since the start of the event and was only now taking a break. If she hadn't seen her at the start of the event, and if she didn't know that she was Joy's, she might have been a bit more scared of her with all those heads and the sound of them all barking in unison. Mind you, she was scared, but only a little. Enough to remind that her instincts existed and that she should still be careful.

Ekstrom moved as close as she could, as quietly as she could, using the trees as cover. When she was very nearly within reach she chucked her whistle into the brush just across. It caught the beast's attention, and in that exact moment she made a mad dash and reach for one of the rings. Palamedes was incredibly fast though, and just as quickly as she felt a ribbon slip into her hand it was already slipping out. She clenched her fist as tightly as she could in the next instant, and she felt the cool of one of the rings in her palm as she fell to the ground and the questing beast raced off, into the woods and out of sight again.

She was breathing hard but smiling as she turned slightly and opened her hand to reveal the golden ring that she managed to snag. She didn't managed to get the ribbon, but that was fine. She closed her hand around it again, and fully turned so she was laying on her back as she slowly caught her breath. Eventually she stood and dusted herself off, then spent some time finding the whistle. Once she did she headed back to hand Joy the ring and secure what she figured might be a modest number of points for herself.

Character name: Abzu of Neptune
Competing for: Stromboli of Uranus
Cooperating with: n/a
Points earned: 3

Abzu didn't know about many mouthed beings, but he did know enough about dogs themselves to know exactly what would work in this particular circumstance: a stick. He bet he could be enough of a distraction with one of these many sticks of the garde to get what he needed from the not actually a dog beast figure that stood before them.

Was its name Pal? Abzu actually kind of loved that, especially considering how daunting it was as a creature.

Anyway.

Abzu lifted his stick and waved it in Pal's direction. Once he solidly had the not dog's attention, he chuckled it, causing Pal to give him just enough of an opening to not only grab the ring, but the ribbon attached to it. Abzu's eyes danced as he opted to immediately go bring this back to Joy.

Honestly, the more he did this, the more he got into this. Maybe Abzu did not naturally have a competitive streak, but it was fun to be doing as well as he was, even if his parent wasn't quite doing as well as he was-

Character name: Eridu of Cybele
Competing for: n/a
Cooperating with: n/a
Points earned: 1+1(+1?) = 1

Eridu was being shown up by their kid and they didn't quite know what to think about it, considering Abzu was one of the least competitive men Eridu had ever come across in their entire life.

And in some ways, Eridu was proud of this. They had (tried to) raised Abzu well. They had raised him to show there was strength in simply being confident and throwing everything behind what they wanted to stand behind. In this case, it was the business partner of Eridu's accountant, which was a bit of an awkward thing, but what did Eridu know?

Apparently nothing, considering they couldn't convince this dog creature to even let them get a ring. Abzu had managed a wooden ring and a ribbon, which Eridu was proud to see! Eridu couldn't quite manage even that and part of them wanted to stop what they were doing with this stick to go ask their son if there was some kind of trick they were missing.

Perhaps they just didn't have the luck of the draw. Maybe Pal didn't like them as much as their accolade themself did. Eridu didn't know.

At least they finally managed to get one of the rings, even if it came by way of nearly dropping it first. It would have to be good enough to return the ring to Joy in any case.

At least Eridu didn't have anyone they were competing for except for themself.

Aquitania followed the rest of the party toward the forest, gathering around to listen to the instructions, still practically bouncing on her toes after the thrill of the joust. It had been so much fun! If this was an annual event, the chibi was already excited for next year. Would it come after she had a chance to learn how to ride on her own?

With a little effort, she redirected her attention to Joyeuse Garde, who was introducing a very strange creature, almost a thing of a hunter's nightmares, but which gave the impression of wiggling like a very excited puppy that could barely wait to play games. Weird and off-putting as it looked, she couldn't help but admire the strangeling thing, which their hostess referred to as "Pal", short for "Palamedes". Which, if anything, was unreasonably cute.

Then it was sprinting off among the trees, and Joyeuse Garde was instructing them all to choose a stick or a whistle to take with them. After a moment's hesitation, the chibi chose a stick. If "Pal" was that doglike, and that playful, maybe it enjoyed a game of fetch?

As she made her way through the woods, she spotted her Accolade shadowing her, sometimes stopping if it thought she was going a bad way. Then, it stopped and kicked lightly at a tree on the edge of a clearing, with big, spreading branches, strong enough to hold her weight. She grinned, and her Accolade tossed its head proudly.

Climbing up, she found a good spot, and threw her stick. A multivocal baying erupted, and Pal charged into the clearing, looking for the stick that had been thrown. As it looked around, Aquitania reached down and snagged for one of the rings on its collar, any ring would do. Just before Pal could snatch its stick and flee, she pulled a ring free.

Startled, Pal fled back into the trees, leaving the relieved chibi to slide off her branch and onto her Accolade's back. The Accolade--Briar Rose, she'd decided to call the mare--knelt again, letting her slide harmlessly to the forest floor. It was only then that she looked at what she'd snagged, and laughed as the Accolade began to stroll back toward the edge of the forest next to her.

"Well, Briar Rose, I think we've done very well for ourselves," she said, gazing at the golden ring still affixed to a red ribbon embroidered with a pattern of roses. "Thank you so much, for everything today."

Green Chapel trooped after everyone else to the edge of the forest and listened to the instructions, still a little dazed by the results. She'd actually done incredibly well at the joust. Well. Maybe not to the point of winning, and with the partnership of a very good Accolade, but still, worth being proud of.

Then Joyeuse Garde was explaining the next game, next to a very strange creature. Frankly, if one of those had been spotted around the Green Chapel, given what she'd read of Gawain and the Green Knight, then the page would not have been the least bit surprised, just would've tried to keep it from getting indoors and wreaking some merry and playful havoc, given how doglike it seemed--an impression that was aided as much by demeanor as the baying it gave when it sprinted into the forest.

But their hostess said they could team up, right? Which meant...

She turned to the cousin that hadn't already grabbed a stick and ran off into the forest. "Hey, Aberdonia, want to grab a couple of sticks and try to catch the Questing Beast together?" she suggested. "Two heads might be better than...well..." How many heads could one say the Questing Beast--Pal--actually had? One? Dozens? Either way, they might accomplish more together than either would on their own.

Aberdonia followed the girls out of the lists, as well as everyone else, wondering about the next game, and happy to have done his bit for his baby sister.

He listened intently and thoughtfully as Joyeuse Garde described the next game. A hunting game. Greeeaaat. Another game that didn't pair well with sandals. Oh, well. Maybe the next time another of these events rolled around, he'd have sandals that attached themselves to his ankles again. Then again, maybe not. He'd just have to get there and see.

Fortunately, it didn't seem to be about killing the Beast, just snagging a ring from its collar, which was still a tricky feat, but an endeavor worth trying, if he could be clever enough.

As for the Beast itself--Pal--it seemed kind of cute, in a little bit of an ugly cute way, but very much in its puppy-like mien.

Then Green Chapel was suggesting they team up.

"OK, sounds good," he said, stepping up to the booth and collecting a stick for each of them. Together, they proceeded into the forest, looking for a nice, large clearing where they could attempt to play Fetch with Pal.

"So, do you have any ideas about how to make this work?" he asked his cousin.

"Kind of," Green Chapel admitted as she took her stick from Aberdonia and walked with him. "I was thinking we could take turns throwing our sticks to each other, and, if Pal gets too close to either one of us, throw our stick high up in the air and try to grab a ring while Pal tries to catch the stick." It wasn't a spectacular plan, but it might keep Pal preoccupied and tire it out a little bit. Assuming a Questing Beast even could be tired out in the same way a regular dog could.

Aberdonia shrugged. "Worth a try," he said as they reached a large clearing. "Okay. I'll stand at one end, you stand at the other. Do we want to throw at the same time, kind of like we're juggling?" he called to his cousin, lifting his stick to toss it underhanded toward the page.

"Sure!" Green Chapel called back as she reached her end of the clearing. Both sticks were thrown and the game began. They fortunately had a few minutes to settle into a rhythm and figure out how hard to throw their sticks before a baying of multiple voices erupted from the bushes to their side, and Pal crashed into the clearing. Unfortunately, she had emerged right next to Green Chapel, so she was going to have to try to snag a ring first.

"Hey, Pal! Catch!" she shouted, throwing her stick high into the air and snatching at one of the rings on her collar, which came away easily as Pal snagged her stick from the air and whirled around to try to go after her cousin's stick.

Risking a glance downward before hurrying to help her cousin, she glimpsed a golden ring attached to a green ribbon embroidered with a pattern of forest flowers. Score. Now Aberdonia just had to get a ring of his own.

Aberdonia jumped a little as Pal crashed out of the bushes and went for Green Chapel's stick, as he'd pretty happily settled into the rhythm of their game. But this was the point, wasn't it, the game of catch was only meant to lure Pal close enough, and, if they both got their rings, it had achieved its proper purpose.

Then Pal was romping toward him, baying, Green Chapel had a ring in her hand, and there was nothing to do, but to throw his own stick as high as he could, snatching at a ring and running toward his cousin before Pal could flee with her assorted prizes.

As Pal romped away, baying again with joy, the super senshi glanced down at the ring in his hand. Yesss. Golden ring at the end of a white ribbon embroidered with a pattern of water lilies. This was going to help his baby sister a lot.

This creature was ... Strange.

Ibirapitá understood that the creatures of different worlds and different people's manifested in much different ways. He had seen hundreds of different types in his time as a functional diplomat. This, though?

Why did it have so many heads?

All Ibirapitá had to distract it was a stick. Would it be that easy? Did he have to attract the attention of all three heads all at once? ... Five? How many did it even possess? There was something about it that gave Ibirapitá chills, which was not particularly beneficial to his ability to perform.

He wagged the stick around until he certainly had the attention of one holding a... wooden ring. Good enough.

Once he chucked it, Pal's partial scramble toward the stick allowed Ibirapitá to snatch the ring out of the air.
