The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

Lt. Tetrataenite Kohana

└── •✧• ──┘

If things progress they way they have during patrols, Tetrataenite felt the subtle but growing confidence in him that eventually, he could do this himself. He had been on patrols before, though never not accompanied by Actinolite. And it was his patroling partner that effortlessly managed to put Tetrataenite's usual anxiety at ease. It was always like that when starting something new.

But patroling after a few times, Tatrataenite might as well treat this like a walking date with Actinolite. It was generally uneventful but he was happy just walking near the other. Even if they both tried to focus on their duties.

To be honest, part of Tetrataenite hoped patrols would continue this way. He wasn't particularly ambitious, even if he wanted to serve the negaverse well. But he was still nervous about some of their tasks. He only hoped that the more he did it, the more he was used to it. Choosing to focus instead that he didn't have to do this alone.

While patroling, Tetra's eyes caught a strange item in the middle of the road. The light gleam catching his attention. He briefly looked at his patrol partner, taking note that they didn't seem that interested in the item. Tetra wondered if it was something valueble that fell out of someones pocket. Surely' they'd look for it won't they? What if someone stepped on it, broke it on accident, and it rolls off to where no one can find it? Tetra frowned at the thought, not thinking much before bending down a little to pick it up. Intending to only set it aside away from the pathway.

Tetra barely managed to graze his fingers againt the item before something went wrong. Like a harsh wind pushed through him, darkness flooding in him. As if transporting him from the nice patrol date to a world thats entirely new.

Lt. Actinolite

Although Tetrataenite had hopes of and was gaining confidence to eventually go on patrols by himself, Actinolite had other ideas. He never intended to let Tetrataenite go on his own if he could help it. He had heard and seen a lot of strange things about Destiny City since they had moved there and it only seemed to get stranger the longer they stayed. Not that that was necessarily a bad thing; he was sure as long as Tetra and he stayed together, they had nothing to fear. But that was precisely why he never meant for Tetra to patrol anywhere on his own.

Even as a civilian, Actinolite had always been extra protective of his fiancée – even before they were engaged and even before they were dating, when they were still just friends. With new threats they had been warned about, however, he became more concerned than ever and didn’t plan on leaving Tetra’s side anytime soon, either figuratively or literally. He liked to act as Tetra’s advisor and guide when he could as well. And furthermore, like Tetra with him, he also simply just enjoyed the pleasure of being in Tetra’s presence, so he really saw no need for either of them to be separated for patrols.

Like Tetra, too, Actinolite had also come to think of their patrols together as something like dates, even if not necessarily particularly extravagant or flashy ones. Sometimes it was just nice to talk together under the moon and starlight in the evenings, especially when it was quiet and uneventful. If there was danger, at least Actinolite knew he could be right there to protect or help Tetra out. And if there were…less savory duties they had to carry out…at least he could do them for Tetra so Tetra didn’t have to.

Actinolite was just thinking about the duties assigned to them as lieutenants, such as collecting large amounts of energy, when he sensed Tetra look at him and glanced over before his partner turned his attention back to the ground. Following his gaze, Actinolite realized what he was looking at – something shiny on the ground – and was about to suggest Tetra leave it alone when he saw another one closer to his own shoe. It was a die. There were two of them…as if they were meant for the two lieutenants.

Being pretty well-off himself, Actinolite wasn’t about to pick up something off the ground without very good reason, but he saw Tetra bend to do just that. Well, maybe he had his own reasons for doing so, but the dice gave Actionlite a bad feeling. He opened his mouth to tell Tetra to stop, but it was too late. A strong wind seemed to come out of nowhere to slam into them both. Before Actinolite knew what was happening, everything around them went dark.

He'd think twice from now on when picking up items. Being suddenly whisked away on a dark, empty space had never happened before. Even after recognising that Actinolite was with him, he felt a wash of dread and guilt to what had just happened. Bringing his focus back on the other despite them almost calling their civiliain name. Frowning at the wonder of how they were just as worried. " I-I'm not hurt.. are you?".

He wanted nothing more than to rush to the other, though with how dark everything is, it felt like he was so close yet so far. " W-what happened? Where are we? I- I can't see you.. " , he tried to steady his breathing. He tried to move closer but just as he did, he was pushed back by an invisible wall. Oh god.. what had he done..

He opened his palm to find a die, suddenly seeing marked spaces in front of him. Each numbered.

Space 0:
You have arrived here; nothing happens until you roll your die.

“Sa- Tetra! Tetra, are you alright?” Actinolite called, cursing himself for almost giving away Tetrataenite’s civilian name. When he looked around, however, he couldn’t see anyone else who might have overheard. Nor could he sense anyone else. In fact, he couldn’t see or sense anything at all because everything was pitch black. But he heard Tetra’s voice…so he must have been nearby. Right?

"I-I'm not hurt.. are you?" he heard Tetrataenite ask.

“No, I’m alright,” Actinolite assured him, trying to sound calm now that he knew his partner was nearby. He didn’t want to alarm him any more than he already was; he knew how easily anxious he could get and how strong that anxiety could be, after all. He must have already been so nervous, so if Actinolite was nervous too, it would only serve to cause his partner more stress. Furthermore, a good deal of his own stress was calmed now that he knew that Tetra was nearby and unhurt.

"W-what happened? Where are we? I- I can't see you.."

“I don’t know what happened or where we are,” the green-eyed lieutenant admitted, “but we’ll be alright, I think. I can’t see you either…but as long as we can hear each other, I think we’ll be okay.” At the very least, they could continue to keep track of each other. He just didn’t want to think of what they would do if one of them got into trouble. He had no idea how the other would be able to try to help. Were they really on their own in this?

He tried to feel around for his partner, but was distracted by the ground that began to illuminate itself in front of him. For a little while, all he could feel was the solidness of what felt like invisible glass walls surrounding the square he stood on. Once the light of the path reached his eyes, however, he was just able to make out the shape of Tetra not far from him.

“There you are! I was worried for a moment, there,” he murmured. “I don’t know where we are…but perhaps we’re meant to go down this path.” He regarded it curiously, but when he tried to take a step onto the next square before them, there was a barrier of some sort that he walked into. “Hmm…do you have anything that might help us move from this space to the next?”

" I.. I have a die…" he mumbled, the panic failing to be hidden. " Do.. do you have it as well? Is this … like.. a game.. we have to finish?" He didn't neccesarily wait for the other to answer.

He did not like the solo journey they'd have to venture. The depths of the board is unseen, unknown what lurks in each space. But Tetrataenite knew they very well couldn't just stay in the start of the space. Tetra was not very fond of horror games, but he'd have to force himself to pretend this is one for the sake of getting out. With a heavy heart, he moved the die first. Watching it land to a 3. And just like that he's been transported.

Around him was a bunch of nothing, which meant that could potentially be everything hidden in the mist of the fog he had yet to see. That wasn't a great start to the ever anxious Tetra. Lack of information ony filled in the gaps himself. Every brush or tickle spurred his imagination to go into defence mode, tensing his whole body as he prepared to face what he coudn't see.

He stepped on the die, making him remember there was a ground despite the vast fog. He carefully laid down and picked up the die intending to roll it again.

Please..please.. get us out of here..

Actinolite had never really been fond of animals, but being trapped in a confined space with one while having nowhere to run or even hide made things especially frightening. Particularly when said animal was very likely a large, angry dog with sharp teeth that was ready to rip him apart from the sounds of it. Preferring not to encounter the beast if he could help it, the lieutenant quickly rolled his die again in order to move forward as soon as possible.

6. Great! The faster they coud move, the faster they could get out here. Tetera now finds himself at a shore, the platform beneath him creaking as he moved his boots against them. His spaces had been .. suspiciously tame so far. He intended to roll the die again but then he heard it. Somewhere in the distance. He couldn't have looked away even if he wanted to.

Just like that, in the fight hauntingly enchanting tune, Tetra's anxiety flooded away. Odd…why had he ever wanted to leave again? This voice.. felt so familiar.. so safe. Like he could listen to it forever. In peace, free of everything that troubled and scared him. Instead of a blissful slumber, he felt a sharp burn in his throat, stratling him awake.

His vision blurred with the water around him, his hand immediately covered his nose and mouth, feeling dizzy as his breath begun to ran out. The song was so loud despite the water around him, like it was right next to him. Looking down he almost let out a yell, the scaly hands wrapped around him, gently still. As if they only wanted to lead him to sleep. His vision had begun to darked, panic surged through him. Clashing with the tantalising urge to let the hand to take him. With the last bit of strength he had , he kicked the hand away swimming up, taking in a deep gasp. He hardly stabilised himself, still coughing out waster and gasping air. Fearing the song would begin again soon he grabbed the die and rolled it again

They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

What in the world was above him? It seemed too dark to see at first, but by the sounds of things…were those…bats? Their high-pitched sounds immediately began to give him a headache and Actinolite winced, covering his ears as dizziness and even pain began to set in. Hurriedly, he grabbed his die from off the ground and tossed it back down once more, willing it to send him to a new space with the number it showed him.

He called out for his partner, loudly but sickly. But it might as well sound like a whisper with the distant screams coming closer. Blurred faces rush past him, more concerned with their own safety to stop to help him. He forced himself to stand, but the smoke made him cough and he got on his knees, his arm covering his nose. Deep rooted fear flooded his veins as the familiar scent of soot and ash made his hands start to tremble. He yelled for Actinolate, as if the other could even hear him. Unsure if he was ahead of behind. Part of him knew it was useless but he needed to do something. Or he'd stay stuck frozen in fear of what might come. Again.

Once he gained enough to push through the shakyness, he managed to grab the die and rolled it again.

Something slithers across your foot, so fast that you might have thought you imagined it. Except, a few seconds later, it happens again. And then, again. Snakes keep moving across your space. If you move, they see you–and they might bite. Some of them hiss, some are capable of spraying a poisonous liquid that can cause itchiness or burning.

What was with all these animals? First a dog, then bats, and now…snakes? It made Actinolite extremely uneasy that the snakes could move across and out of his space but he could not. It meant he was trapped and at the serpents’ mercy. Unfortunately for Actinolite, when he moved to try to take a step back within the confines of his square, one of the snakes made him out to be a threat and bit him, causing him to cry out in surprise and pain. It wasn’t venomous, but when he was bitten, he stepped backward, trampling another snake on accident that sprayed a poisonous liquid at him. The liquid hit his leg, but it burned right through his clothes and skin like it was acid. Maybe it was acid.

Actinolite began to hiss himself at the agony of the liquid on his skin, but he resolved to steel himself and rolled his die in order to escape the snake space, limping along with his newly-injured leg.

When he woke up again, it was… quiet. So different than the panicked shrills and screeches of the previous space. Tetra would try to move, but his limbs would only pull his body back. He was breathing heavily at first, though he sharply stopped breathing as he noticed at the corner of his eye- something moved. Oh god..it never ends. Tetra didn't even get a good look at what it was. It was enough to know it was moving. He wasn't going to wait around to know how big of a creature it was. Or worse- how many.

Biting his lips to the point where they were faintly red, trying to minimise his breathing and stop himself from coughing, he very slowly bent down to grab the die. The movement at the corner his eye seemed to notice him. He didn't wait another second before rolling the die

The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.

Smoke was a scent Actinolite and his lungs were very familiar with. His lieutenant weapon was a kiseru – a Japanese smoking pipe - after all. But when he could hear distant screams, his blood ran cold. Tetrataenite  was afraid of fire due to past experiences; that much he knew. And, as the saying went, where there was smoke, there was fire. With the feel of people running past adding to Actinolite’s sense of panic, he called out for Tetra, wondering if he would be able to reach him if he could even find him. Was he hurt? Was he afraid? Was he trapped?

Actinolite was extremely reluctant to leave his square until he could learn the answer to all these questions, but he told himself that even if Tetra was in danger, he wouldn’t be able to help unless they were on the same square. Searching the space thoroughly, he quickly discovered Tetra was nowhere in sight. Hopefully the sights and sounds and sense of panic were all just tricks of the square he was on. Hopefully they were just illusions. Desperately hoping he wasn’t making a mistake and accidentally leaving Tetra behind, Actinolite rapidly  rolled his die to move on.

His clothes.. were wet. His tongue taste like salt, burning his throat and the passageway to his nose. His skin was mixed with water and soot, leaving a greyish grime on his face. And yet he was still standing. Hoping the nightmare would end soon, and he could reunite with Actinolate. Even if he wanted to break down to sob, adraneline pushed him to continue.

But adraneline couldn't save him from what came next. The rushed flaps of wings and multiple screeching brought his attention up to the sky. Which turned out to be a big mistake. Giving the claws of a bat enough reach to slice the side of his face, narrowly missing his eye, making Tetra let out a pained hiss. But he didn't have time to linger on the sensation when it was not 1, or 5 bats. But dozens. Swarming around him, screeching, clawing slicing his clothes, leaving tears on the fabric. He used both his arms to at least defend his face. Would've been grateful that his negavere uniform covered most of his skin, serving some sort protection. It was his short hair that couldn't save him.

Before he could even register the tiny creature climbing up from the back of his uniform, it already showed its fangs and dug it into the back of his neck. The pained yelp strained his throat as he pushed the bat away from his back. But it was too late. The sting felt it burned more than just the surface of his skin.

As if the sheer exhaustion had churned into an unsatisfied frustration. From strictly just defending himself, Tetra felt his focus sharpen. His body feeling warmer, his body iched to move. To hit something. He uncharacteristically moved without thinking. His hand directly hitting the bats unfortunate enough to come close enough to him. Again, and again.. and again. It was like his brain was put on pause, each hit was the only thing that made him feel better. Just as the bats didn't swarm him as mercilessly as before he rolled the die

Space 16:
As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet.

Almost as soon as Actinolite shifted his weight onto the 16th square, he heard a loud crack from under him. He was reluctant to keep moving forward but knew he probably had no choice since the gameboard very obviously encouraged continuing on and reaching the end as soon as one could manage. As soon as his full weight was in the space of the square, however, it broke the ground beneath him - which turned out to be ice - and dropped him into freezing cold water.

Actinolite gasped and scrambled to find his die, determined not to lose it to the chilling depths of the waters he found himself in. Seeing it still floating on a pice of stray ice, he tried to haul himself up onto the ice's surface to grab it. The ice tipped, sliding the die almost past him into the water, but with enhanced reflexes as a Negaverse Lieutenant, he caught it and tried to restabilize himself as he pulled himself up onto the slab of ice. Once he was sure he was fairly stable, he rolled his die again. Surely, their nightmare had to be over soon.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

"Tetra! Tetra, are you there?"

Actinolite finally reached the platform that resembled the die he had been rolling in the material it was made of. Tetra wasn't there yet, but he was on his way. Act could see him. He leaned over the edge of the platform, eager to get his partner to safety as quickly as possible.

"Come on! You can do it!"
