2025 Star Festival Prompt
Under Construction (9) : Construction in Destiny City is a constant; it is never surprising to see buildings come and go. However, almost overnight it seems as though a large project has suddenly come to life. Where there was once an abandoned strip mall and a sad, trash laden park, the ground has now been completely bulldozed. There's no information about this project available in any media outlets or online, and all attempts to research it result in dead ends. A large fence has been put up, but twelve feet of wire isn't enough to keep out anyone curious enough to investigate. Cameras are set up all over the place and there is a strange, almost magical energy. The space is large enough to be a theme park. Strangely, frosted glass stars in an array of colors can be found randomly across the lot. Someone obviously has big plans for this space already, some strange, fantastical buildings are going up. The space feels strangely large, and once you have jumped the fence it feels like Destiny City is a world away. The sky seems brighter and the city lights seem far away, almost as though there is some strange barrier separating the construction zone and the rest of the city. And, oddly enough, if you are standing outside the fence and looking into the construction zone, everything appears blurry and it's hard to make out the details. It's strange, for sure, but nothing seems wrong about it. Yet.

A lot of shady things seemed to happen in empty construction zones at night. Teenagers often seemed to go there looking for mischief, to meet with friends, to do illicit things like smoke behind their parents’ backs, or any combination of those. Where there was no parental supervision, however, there was also less caution and therefore more ease in stealing energy from careless individuals. Tress surveyed the construction site as she watched and waited for anyone foolish enough to come looking for trouble in the empty lot. She put away the Violet Star Charm she had found on the site so she quit anxiously fiddling with it because she never really liked this part of the job. It seemed so underhanded, but she knew it was necessary. Besides, if a few teenagers or college kids learned a lesson about coming to abandoned sites with low supervision in the future, perhaps it would have been worth it. She was an aspiring teacher, after all, and she wanted what was best for youngsters, especially anyone who could have been potential students of hers.

That was when she saw a figure walking all on his own. He was dressed all in black with black hair, so he was a bit hard to make out, but she could feel his energy signature and the strength of his starseed. At least, at first he seemed to be on his own. A short distance away, she noticed someone tailing him – a White Moon Senshi. What were they tailing him for? Did the civilian know he was being stalked? Likely not. Realizing this, Tress quickly made a plan.

If she started draining energy and she or the White Moon Senshi was noticed, she could explain how she had noticed the young man had been stalked by the senshi and that she had stepped in to try to stop them. She could explain to the young man what a threat the senshi were to Earth and perhaps even convince him to join the Negaverse’s numbers. His innate starseed power seemed strong; he seemed like he would make a strong powered being if awakened. But she had to show him she was on his side, first. Well, after she took a bit of his energy.

So Forsterite stepped out into the open, behind the civilian but near enough for the White Moon Senshi to sense her. She wondered if the coward would run and hide after she showed herself since neither of them seemed to be stronger than the other. If anything, the White Moon Senshi seemed to be an amateur with the way they kept pulling down on their skirt and walking awkwardly in the dirt on those bright red high heels. Did the civilian really not know he was being followed? Maybe he had and was simply pretending not to for some reason. Whatever the case, Forsterite was about to crash their party as she began to silently pull energy from the figure all in black. She didn’t even spare the senshi a look as she concentrated on gathering energy since she was still getting the hang of it.

Admittedly, Jackson was a bit tired and not on his game. He normally would have noticed someone following him and confronted them, but after spending most of the day at the reservoir in the bright sun and then spending another long portion of it exploring the caves where the flowing caterpillars were, he was just looking forward to making it home and taking a nice cool shower and his mind was preoccupied in deciding whether to go to the festival later or not. He rubbed his thumb over a crimson star charm he had found as he thought.

As much as he loved the outdoors, there was something about the sun on a hot day that seemed to take all of his energy. Even though he had done a good job of cooling off in the caves, that exploration had been a bit more exercise than he was used to for a day. Not that he wasn't used to exercise. He walked almost everywhere, but spending the day at the reservoir and hiking through caves was a different kind of exercise.

Jackson was the kind of person who was a lot stronger than his lean and rather wiry frame would suggest, even putting his rather tall height aside, and although he didn't intensively work out to maintain that leanness and strength, he didn't completely ignore it either. The musician could definitely hold his own in a fight if a non-magical person ever tried to start something with him, non-magical being the key there.

Anyway, he wasn't paying attention as much as he normally would have been, so the person behind him went rather unnoticed, or just generally disregarded. Just because a person was going in the same direction as him didn't mean they were following him and he was too tired and occupied to puzzle whether they actually were following him or not.

As the for the next person who stepped up behind him, their bad luck was stepping out just as one song Jackson was listening to faded out and the next one began to fade in. Jackson usually wandered around the city with one Bluetooth earphone in one ear and the other one open to the world around him. This way he could enjoy heading to where ever he was going or whatever he was doing in the city with his own, person soundtrack and still, when he wasn't distracted, keep an ear on his surroundings. He wasn't paranoid, just, aware that other people didn't always have good intentions towards strangers and nefarious people usually went after targets that looked distracted and easy to attack.

So, at the sound of footsteps a lot closer behind him, Jackson turned around to examine the person while also taking in the area he had ended up in. He had ended up at one of the newest construction sites that had popped up around Star City. His flat was probably another thirty minute walk away, he could run it in fifteen if he needed to, but the person who had stepped behind him appear to be a woman, significantly shorter than he was. Maybe she needed directions, or maybe they had just simply crossed paths and she had walked past close enough for him to notice.

He raised his visible eyebrow at them and their outfit. Was there some kind of costume contest tonight at the festival? Or somewhere else in the city that they were headed to? Apparently he had also caught her attention as she looked up at him and for some reason, he felt even more tired. Would he even have the energy to take a shower at this point?

Sailor Clara wandered after Jackson like a lost puppy, not really sure why, but telling himself it was to protect an unarmed civilian in such a dangerous-seeming place. The senshi clutched to his chest the Fushia Star Charm he had picked up for good luck before putting it away. And not a moment too soon, either.

He saw the woman before he felt her energy signature. He had been too trained on Jackson to pay much attention to his other surroundings and not trained enough as a senshi to think to check on when other energy signatures were nearby unless he could see their sources. As soon as he saw the woman, though, he almost didn’t have to check her energy to tell she wasn’t on his side. Almost, because he still wasn’t sure how different knights were from senshi, but his sensing of her chaos energy was all he needed to confirm his suspicions. She was with the Negaverse. A Negaverse lieutenant.

Emerald eyes widening, Clara wasted no time in bringing his palm up and aiming it in the direction of the lieutenant before a blast of magic shot out of it, breaking the woman's concentration and knocking her back away from himself and Jackson. Without thinking, Clara turned to Jackson, knowing they didn't have much time, and yelled, "Jackson, RUN!!"

It didn't occur to him until after he spoke the words that he had made a mistake in using Jackson's name directly. He shouldn't have. Jackson wouldn't have known him as Sailor Clara due to his glamour. And that was the way things had to stay, too. Hopefully the other young man wouldn't wonder about it too much and simply do as he was told. From what he knew of Jackson, however, Roka sadly doubted it.

Still, he didn't have time to stand there and simply wait and hope that Jackson would start running. He also didn't have time to explain himself or anything else. Turning to refocus his attention on the new person he had just made an enemy of, Clara bit his lip and tugged on his bangs nervously. He had fired off one shot, so he only had two left. There was also the illusion that followed up each shot, but he couldn't ever say if it would affect his opponents or, even if it did, by how much. So, just in case his magic did nothing, he tried to talk to her to distract her as she began to get back up from where she'd fallen in the dirt.

"What do you think you're doing?!" he cried across the distance she'd been blasted. "You think you can just prey on innocent people? You and the rest of the Negaverse?" He brought up his palm again, as if to warn he he was willing to fire off his magic once more if he needed to. "Well, not while I'm around. If you want to do that, you're going to have to defeat me first."

The words felt lame and even cheesy coming out of his mouth like he thought he was some superhero there to save the day. Like he had the confidence and power to pull off actually defeating the woman when he wasn't even sure what she was capable of. Still, with his sphere being 'embarrassment' and his outfit already embarrassing him enough, a little more humiliation couldn't have been all that much worse than what he was already enduring, he figured.
