Taking the briefest of moments to close her eyes and scan the area for any signs of Chaos, Nis was relieved to find nothing alarming. It was always nice when the enemy was kind enough to leave certain areas alone. Particularly when she was planning on taking some items from her shop up to her Wonder. Of course, she could have simply gone up directly from the shop, but she didn’t like the idea of broadcasting quite that loudly. She’d never been sure whether or not the transfer generated any sort of energy signature and felt it was far better to avoid that particular risk.

Besides, it gave her a bit of a thrill of accomplishment to carry some of the heavier pieces out as if they were a fraction of their weight. Magical muscle boosts were always appreciated.

Which brought her back to the small pile of things that she’d set aside in the back room. Nis knew that this would be a one tripper if she packed and stacked smart. The only really unwieldy items was a large set of hanging candle lamps that looked a bit exotic and like something out of 1001 Arabian Nights. She thought they’d be especially pretty in one of the little alcoves she’d cleared out. And with them she had a box of old silk saris that she’d decided to repurpose into drapes, throws and pillow covers. She even had a few large chunks of selenite and labradorite that someone had carved into various deities. They weren’t antique, but someone had given them to her as a consignment and she’d simply bought them for herself. All together, she had two hefty plastic storage bins chock full of things. With a sigh, she lifted one up onto her shoulder, balancing it carefully before kneeling down to grab the handle of the other and drag it.

Once outside the back of the shop, she lowered the one bin so she could lock the door and then gathered it up again. She’d head a block over and head to her wonder from there. And luckily, the night remained free and clear of anything Chaotic.

Which made it a distinct pity that she’d never thought to check for any auras belonging to her own side.

“Are you serious?”

The indignant, angry words came from down the street, but a knight was already moving very briskly in the direction of the scene, having arrived just in time to entirely miss the bit with the door being locked up securely. Magical muscle boosts were fun, and so were magical speed boosts. Joy, in fact, had more than once wound down a night of being powered up by simply sprinting until she couldn't, relishing this change of circumstance for a girl who had always walked the mile in gym class and did not own a single pair of sneakers.

She cracked her whip as she came into range - the exact knowledge of its size being one of the things she had actually found to be useful in the dreary and annoying training she subjected herself to on her Wonder - and the perfume of white flowers provided a pleasant contrast to the smell of damp pavement as they opened along the length of vines erupting from the sidewalk, exploding towards Nis.

“Shoplifting? And not even, like, an Ulta or something? A small business!”

Eldritch stardust
A short riding whip with a red silk handle, incapable of breaking the skin and causing only blunt force damage. Flowering vines erupt from the ground and reach to about knee-high in a ten foot radius, wrapping around the opponent's legs to slow them down. Although the vines are breakable, the scent of the flowers induces an urge to seek Joy's approval, praise, or affection, although the urge can be fought with active focus. Joy can channel for approximately 35 seconds at this stage.

The sudden sprouting of flowering vines that twisted around her legs was a surprise, as was the not-terribly-pleased voice accusing her of shoplifting. Only at that point did Nis realize that another knight was right there and clearly working under some faulty assumptions. Setting box boxes down carefully on the flowers, she turned slowly, breaking some of the vines, in order to face her accuser. She had a desire to smooth this over and make friends with the other knight, though she couldn’t explain why. It annoyed her though, that urge to try and curry favor when she hadn’t done a damn thing wrong. It was hardly shoplifting when it was her own damn shop!

Summoning her own weapon, she rapidly pointed it to a spot just above the other knight’s head and called up her own magic. The beam of starlight focused on the other woman, framing her like a cold stagelight. Well, she had ten seconds, she’d better talk fast.

“Do you not have eyes in your head,” she demanded, almost apologetically. Then, she got annoyed with herself all over again, feeling a little more of that desire to seek approval burning away. “Can’t you read auras?”

She almost asked why she’d be stealing from herself, but bit the words back. She didn’t know if this was an honest mistake on the other knight’s part or something a bit darker. Outing herself before she knew would have been a monumentally bad idea. Instead, she reached into her dress and rustled out the key, holding it up in triumph.

“Look. I have a legit key. See? Not shoplifting!”

She let go of her own magic and lowered her weapon. Now that she wasn’t so angry, the need to make everything right with this woman came flooding back and Nis shrugged a little helplessly.

”Rejam”

Squire - A slightly curved stick with honeysuckle and starry motifs carved into it
Spell - The stick is pointed to a spot high above the enemy's head, causing what appears to be a single point of light that traps them in a single, slanting beam of starlight. As long as Nis is channeling, the target will be unable to leave the beam and will feel a seeping cold on any exposed skin. The maximum amount of time she is able to channel at this stage results in an immobilization of up to 10 seconds and seeping cold of up to 30 seconds.

She still held the whip warily, as if prepared to use it, but she shivered, pulling her furs around her shoulders and giving Nis a withering, disapproving look. The vines withered and vanished as she did so.

“Girl, I met someone on our side that I'm pretty sure eats people. Your aura can be cinnamon rolls and glitter and you might still be stealing s**t.”

She hefted the whip as if in dire warning, wrinkling her nose - although she still wasn't standing within range to use its lash. “And having a key doesn't mean s**t either. You think a landlord or a maintenance guy or an employee never stole anything?” She pointed imperiously at the boxes, and although the magic was gone and with it that annoying urge to earn her approval, she still spoke like someone accustomed to being obeyed, with a queenly little tip of her chin. “Powered up to get it moved out faster, are you?”

The idea that this tactic could equally apply to a totally innocent removal of goods had not, apparently, occurred to her. Joy had internalized some slightly distressing ideas about being powered up.

Well, at least her legs were free now. Listening to the accusations rolling forth from the other knight, Nis almost considered seeing if she couldn’t get an encore round use of her magic purely to get away. But that wouldn’t have solved anything and might have actively made it worse. Feeling quite reluctant, she nevertheless released her weapon and let it vanish back to the ether. It was a show of good faith that she hoped would help to make things a little less blamey.

“Quite the accusations there,” she said evenly. “And so quick to make them too. I’d almost be tempted to lob them back and accuse you of projecting much, but that wouldn’t solve anything. Might be funny though.”

Tucking the key back into her clothing, Nis considered her options. The other knight still had her weapon out and ready and would doubtless send more flowers out after her if she tried too much moving about. So, she simply stood there silently staring at the knight whilst twisting a lavender curl around her finger.

Then, after a few moments’ silence, she said, “Do you realize you talk like a bad 1940s detective movie? Look, I’m going to sit down. Please refrain for the moment from trying to smother me in vines.”

Since she hadn’t moved far from where she’d dropped her boxes, Nis only had to take a step to reach them before plopping down on one and eyeing the other woman a little warily.

“So, do you always jump to the worst possible conclusion without thinking first? Also, I want to meet this cannibal friend of yours. They sound interesting. Shall we approach this logically?” she asked drily before sighing rather noisily and patting the top of the other box in invitation. “Oh, stop trying to look intimidating and come sit. We’re going to be civilized about this nonsense and get this and you sorted out before sunrise.”

Defending herself from accusations hadn’t ever been part of her Powered Bingo card, but since it seemed like that was how this was all shaking out, she might as well roll with it.

“I do not talk like a bad 1940s detective movie. I talk like a bad 1970s detective TV show.

She hesitated. But she didn't put the whip away, although she did drop her arm to her side, letting her grip on the thing grow loose.

“At worst I sound like a bad 1940s gangster movie, and that's totally different.”

But she approached as she said it, taking the offered seat with that same queenly air of self-possession, despite how ridiculous everything she was saying was. “I don't think I can anyway,” she said frankly. “They don't last very long. Could probably knock you over a few times, though.” She arranged her skirts, crossing her legs and adding conversationally: “And if you must know, yes, I do always assume the worst, at least when it comes to all this bullshit.” She made a little gesture, as if to encircle their uniforms and their auras in a circle encompassing all of powered life. “I've learned that it's usually the wisest thing. Don't you?”

”So long as you’re aware,” Nis replied easily, relaxing slightly when informed no more vines would be forthcoming. And, in the interests of keeping things friendly, she offered her own, “Good to know. I couldn’t freeze you in place again if I wanted to right now. Though, I’m sure I could probably pull out that lovely golden hair of yours if things got unfriendly again.”

Eying the knight again, she took note of color and symbol and racked through her memories. Now these she had seen before, out and about as well as on Olympus.

“Earth knight?” she asked. “I suppose it makes sense for you to be suspicious given it’s your planet that we’re all running roughshod over. Can’t be easy. But to answer your question, no. I don’t automatically assume the worst. My lot, Cosmos knights, I mean, are meant to be diplomats and psychopomps. We wouldn’t be very good at that if we walked around expecting everyone to be awful. Point is, I tend to give a little more grace at a first meeting. Unless I find someone actively siphoning energy and stealing a starseed. Grace only goes so far, after all.”

Now that they were talking, Nis was a little more inclined to unthaw and realize just how ridiculous this entire situation was. She began to laugh suddenly and shook her head.

“God, it really is bullshit though sometimes. So, are you a reincarnate too or one of the haunted? If the latter, I’m even more inclined to extend a little grace. I’ve run across a few over the years and I don’t envy them one bit.”

Frankly, she envied them not at all. Some of the things she’d heard had given her the idea that knightly ancestor spirits were all a bunch of mono-focused crazy people. Ghosts. Whatever.

"I don't envy you, either," she said, feeling distressingly - and unexpectedly - defensive. If someone had proposed the conversation to her in abstract, she probably would have laughed and agreed, and made some sort of rueful joke about being beholden to dour French assholes with unhealthy ideas about honor and duty. But hearing the idea in person stung, and she felt herself bridling against it. "No one to show you the ropes, no one to prod you along. Seems lonely, to have to tackle the bullshit by yourself." She added, then: "It's your planet too. You live on it. Seems worth remembering that."

But she let it go, dismissively waving her hand and gesturing at the quiet shop. "Do you actually have permission? Because I can swing around here tomorrow and ask but I'd really, really rather not have to ask in the context of 'oh, sorry, I let them go because they had a key.'" She looked down at the boxes they were sitting on, somewhat skeptically. "I guess I didn't consider that you could - I don't know - rent yourself out as a superhuman moving crew, or whatever."

Shrugging, Nis brushed the thought aside with the wave of a hand.

"Eh, but I can reclaim memories of who and what I was before. They're sad and they hurt, but I don't think I'd trade them out for any guide. They're mine, y'know?"

She was beginning to feel that progress was being made when the earth knight circled right back around to the boxes she'd been hauling. Though doing her best to remain as calm as possible, Nis couldn't help testily replying with, "Oh, for ******** sake, I can't steal from mysef..."

Realization of what she'd just let slip hit her and her hand slapped over her mouth instinctively. Well s**t. Closing her eyes, Nis went very still as she mentally chastised herself for letting her temper take over. Then, eyes remaining closed, she said in a, even, if slightly strangled voice, "I don't suppose you can do me a solid and forget I just said that?"

She was a little pale, in the wake of this stranger having done what Joy herself lived in perpetual fear of doing, her face feeling icy as she tried not to outwardly react. Her recourse, as it usually was in the case of discomfort, was to flippant humor.

"You know, it's a good thing I've got that ghost to rely on instead of having to dig through my own recollections, because I have the leakiest memory sometimes. I have the funniest feeling I'm not going to remember having this conversation at all." She paused. "I've spent money here, and she's real nice. At least I won't have to remember that I let her down and failed to apprehend a petty thief breaking into her nice little shop."

And then, after a reluctant hesitation: "You know, it is good to know that at least one person knows my real name and that it's safe with him, even if he's been dead for a thousand years or whatever. Sure would be nice for me to be able to pay the favor forward." She smiled - unsteady, uncertain. "What a shame I'll never have the opportunity, because of that whole leaky memory thing."

Groping blindly for where she remembered the other knight's hand was, roughly speaking, Nis squeezed it in silent gratitude. She'd shared who she was before and it had never been a problem. But those had been people who'd earned that trust. While she appreciated this girl's 'leaky memory', it wasn't the sort of thing that earned immediate trust.

If she kept the knowledge to herself? Then, yes. She'd have every right to who Nis dressed up as during the day. She guessed time would tell.

Opening her eyes and managing a facade of perfect calm, she inclined her head gracefully and smiled a rueful smile.

"I know she works hard to keep the place running. It'll mean a lot to her to know a past customer thought she was nice and cared enough to try and scare off an assumed thief," she answered, deciding to keep to the pretty little lie that they weren't actually talking about her. "Which I guess is the long way 'round of saying that yes, I have pretty explicit permission. I was going to take this stuff up to my Wonder and try to spruce the place up a bit more. Though your idea was pretty good too. Maybe I should consider hiring myself out as extra muscle."

While she was extremely curious about who this lady was, she pointedly did not ask or draw extra attention to the fact that she'd been a customer. She could do that much for the other knight.

"Well, this has been... I can't say fun in all honesty, but it has been interesting. Should you find that you're in need of a Cosmos knight, hit me up. And before you can ask, you might need one if you end up rescuing a starseed that can't be returned. I hope you're never in that situation, but if you are, I can help it get to where it needs to go."

She stood up and stretched before turning to the Earth knight and offering her a hand. For once, she wasn't inclined to offer her powered name. Nor did she ask for the other woman's. Maybe, if there was a next time they could reach that point. But, not right now.

She didn't offer her own name, either, understanding the silent contract. She stood up and dusted herself off a bit before taking the offered hand with a broad smile, pretending that her chest had no constricted painfully moments before around the idea of a starseed that could not be returned.

She raised her hand as if to tip an invisible fedora, adopting an exaggerated old-timey movie sneer - an impression pretty terribly done, it must be said, but with enough panache to convey the idea, delivered in the appropriate sneering twang.

"Be seein' ya around, kid," she said.
