Petitcru broadcast the general aura of a dog that was habitually carried, which was accurate. She looked a little bereft as she sat on the ground, shivering in her fluffy pink sweater, her little pink leash slack, patiently waiting to once again be picked up. Elaine, however, had needed two hands to peruse the table of dried flower arrangements in front of her, lifting them to her nose with a hedonistic kind of enjoyment. It wasn't until she felt Petitcru's leash going taut around her wrist that she looked down and saw that the little dog was eagerly standing on her hindlegs, and she followed her beady black gaze over to the source of her excitement. "Oh, my god," she said, almost more to the other dog than to the dog's owner, with half a squeal of deep appreciation. She clasped her hands together in a movement of adoration that made her handful of dried roses look something like a bridal bouquet, if those were usually carried by women in ugly sweatpants. "So cute! Is he friendly? Can she say hello?"

Mel was mid-negotiations with the neighboring stall owner, getting her share of fresh, organic veggies to use for the week’s meals, when she felt Lulu shift beside her. The pup inched further and further to the end of her leash until she finally found it, tail wagging faster and harder the longer she kept her focus on the other nearby dog. Mel quickly finished paying and turned just in time to be met by a woman holding a bouquet of roses, and the absolute most adorable little dog she’d ever seen, fluffy pink sweater and all.
“Aww, thank you,” she said, forcing down a proper squee as she moved closer to make things easier for Lulu as well. “Of course! Lulu loves meeting new friends.” Impromptu meetings with other dog owners was something she secretly looked forward to, and always thoroughly enjoyed when they did happen.
“Oh my god, she’s so cute!” she went on to say as she steadied her gaze on the other pup. “So cozy in her little sweater. What’s her name?”

An exchange of friendly sniffing was initiated. Petitcru, as usual, felt the need to go about the ritual with the maximum amount of cringing and terror, despite her little tail quivering. "Petitcru," said her owner, adding with an inward begrudging towards That Jhones Girl, "but I've been calling her Pattycakes a lot lately. Lulu is such a good name," she added, gesturing at her and adding: "I like that her sweater is built in. Sometimes I wish I could grow a fur coat when the weather gets like this. At least a beard."

It was a pleasant exchange, if a bit reserved on Lulu’s part. The amount of apparently nervous energy made her hesitate, though she still very happily assessed her new friend, because clearly this was a new friend, with fluffy tail wagging as energetically as ever. Once introductions were done, Lulu proceeded to gently paw at Petitcru, clearly wanting to play a bit, if she was willing.
Mel could have fully squeed at the name, though again she kept it to herself as Petitcru’s mom hadn’t finished speaking yet. “Those names are both adorable,” she replied, glancing down at the two pups as they exchanged their version of introductions, before snapping her attention back up to the other woman. “And thanks! It’s short for…well, basically Lucy. And I have that same sweater thought every winter since I’ve had her, and then I kinda go the opposite way and apologize to her that she’s gotta deal with fur during the summer.”
“I’m Mel, by the way” she said after a pause, only then realizing that she didn’t know what to call her and thinking it’d be more polite to start with her own name than asking for hers.

With some juggling of flowers and leash, Elaine managed to put out a hand for a surprisingly firm and professional handshake. "Elaine Carlisle," she said, with a beaming smile that was also, in contrast to her generally unkempt-in-sweatpants-and-fleece-jacket appearance, very professional, and flashed the kind of white teeth that can only be bought and paid for. "If you're from around here I'm sure you get sick of hearing it, but I only moved here about a year ago, and it's so goddamned cold I'm looking forward to sweltering in June." Petitcru, not being very good at playing, was at least willing to try, albeit with a great deal of cowardly displays of submission. Very friendly advances of sneezes and bows were being made around the two women's feet.

Lulu…tried…to be mindful in the way she advanced, friendly but hopefully not too overwhelming. A sneeze was met with the occasional happy bark or curious paw or nose into sweater. She nudged and hopped back, mouth open with a lolling tongue in a playfully expectant fashion.
Oh, her smile was stunning, Mel thought rather shyly as she took the very professionally offered hand. It was a little unexpected, considering she didn’t look the part of a professional, but that was more of a compliment than anything. At least Mel thought so, though she kept her thoughts to herself.
“I guess I am at this point?” she said with a light laugh. She felt more like a local now, after…seven? Years of being here. She tucked away the sudden “wow has it been that long” thought for digestion at a later time. “The cold in Winter definitely takes some adjusting. Are you from a warmer state or just a Summer sorta person?” Somehow that felt right. Elaine gave off a very Summer vibe.

"Both," said Elaine, wrinkling her nose in a habitual expression of playful disgust. "Not that Kentucky is tropical, exactly, but we definitely don't get snow that hangs out like this where I'm from." She pointed to Petitcru, who was making ardent but somewhat pathetic efforts at playing. "My neighbor found her under a dumpster here last winter," she said, "and from the way she handles cold you'd think she really was from the Bahamas. Maybe she spent the first few years of her life on a beach somewhere. Lulu looks like she could pull a very tiny sled," she added, apparently so struck by the adorable mental image this conjured that she pressed a hand to her face in delight. "You could get Christmas cards made."

”Oooh, Kentucky,” Mel pulled on her usual curious expression when it came to all things new. “I’ve never been. One of these days, though, I’m gonna be able to check off the bucket list item of visiting every single state.” And country, hopefully one day.
Her eyes fell to Petitcru, and the sight of the two dogs playing (or…maybe more attempting to play? But Lulu seemed plenty happy, regardless) caused the corners or her eyes to crinkle up at such a cute little display. “Poor baby. Glad she’s in good hands now, though.” She was about to comment on a thought about Petitcru sunbathing on a beach once upon a time when the idea of Lulu pulling a sled came up, and she couldn’t help but giggle at that mental image as well.
“Oh, she’d love that. It's a bit late now, but maybe for next year. Hey, maybe she could be pulling Petitcru along for a holiday joy ride.”

"Oh my god," she said, still pressing her hand to her face as she looked first at Mel with admiration, and then at the dogs. "I could put her in a little Santa hat." She paused, and then did a bit more shuffling and juggling, although in the end she had to put her flowers gently down on the ground. "I'm so sorry," she said, pulling out her phone. "Feel free to tell me to ******** off, or to ghost me later," she added cheerfully. "But I'm always looking for play dates for poor Petitcru - it's hard to find dogs that know how to play with her gently and don't make her fly into a panic." This was, possibly, because Petitcru did not seem to understand how to play, exactly. Maybe she needed practice. "Does Lulu need a friend? I'd love for them to hang out sometimes. I am not saying that so that we can do Christmas cards in a year," she added, with an exaggerated shifty look, so that Mel could perceive that it was, maybe, an inducement. "And also not so that I can try to talk you out of visiting Kentucky, although I am tempted."

”Lulu does need more friends, actually,” she replied, the slightest bit of guilt slipping through. Life had gotten busier now that she was basically juggling two jobs (granted, one was technically optional), and with the sun going down much earlier given the season, trips to the dog park and other such playdates had gotten fewer and farther between. She still did her best to spend time with her pup, but she knew she had to make more of an effort.
“So I would love that, too.” The comments about the Christmas card and Kentucky got a giggle out of her, and she pulled her phone out as well. “And hey, I am on board with the Christmas card–ooh! How ‘bout Christmas in July?” That was a thing, wasn’t it?
“And why shouldn’t I visit Kentucky?”

"Girl," said Elaine in a weary voice, turning her phone toward Mel's to start exchanging information. "We're gonna have to save that conversation for when we're hanging out, or they're gonna kick me out for loitering." She wrinkled her nose, not quite a smile but something like one. "We can talk about it while we're figuring out where to get a tiny sled," she said. "Because don't think I'm not holding you to that."
