Just outside the ruins that were once the mighty Sunagakure, a Land Hidden in the Sand, resides a small, impoverished settlement known as Sorai Village. The village boasts no walls, it wields no militant might, and it houses no mighty forgotten warriors. What the village does have is a tight knit community normal everyday civilians who have made a life for themselves since the tragedies that have befallen the Land of Wind time and time again have wrought upon them. A modest market with monthly visits from the nearest trading hub bordering more wealthy lands sustains the people's needs for water and food as the farm lands that once were sustained by ninjutsu have become barren.
A chapel that has been long abandoned by the citizens has become the unlikely home for the small influx of orphaned children who have either been abandoned in despair, forgotten in chaos, or who have succeeded in surviving as their families were slain in some horrid manner or another.
A small school house sits at the village's core, flanked by tight alley ways that pile with sand from the far too often blowing storms. The books and scrolls found within the school house are common knowledge and literature that has been passed down generation to generation and has little academic value besides stories of far off lands. Children attending here are sparse, but the children who do attend are closely tended to while their guardians are out tending to manual labor so they might supply some gruel for the day.
Aside these few buildings, most of the remaining structures still standing upright are no more than worn down homes and hovels long left in disrepair. Sorai is after all, a dying village.

Beneath the the relentless and blazing sun, the dry heat scorched the sands that blew furiously in Sorai Village. The thick air burned with every breath, as the dark indigo haired boy inhaled deeply as splinters sprayed without mercy from the impact of the stick the boy before him held. " Gyahh!" the small framed child shouted as he stepped backward with a defensive swipe horizontally. His smile had been wide and his eyes were intensely focused despite how entirely unaware he was of anything that wasn't the boy that stood before him, never seeing the distant eyes of the village folk. Now, he reeled as he shook his left hand that was red as it throbbed with a dull pulsing pain. "Kihone Nii- San! That hurts!" his voice was scratchy and light, marking his youth as being no older than eight years old. He looked to the brown haired boy before him who was at least a few years his senior. " Thats like...the third time you hit my hand!"he said, his words emotionally charged as tears welled up in the boys eyes. He looked to the other child who was also his elder, standing off to the side. " Koroto Nii-San, you can go next, I'm done!" he pouted as he ran off to a shady spot tightly hugging the building nearest them.

Koroto's arms were folded as he watched the fight unfold between Izanagi and Kihone. Izanagi's form was improving, as he wove his strikes with an ebb and flow which allowed his small frame to throw all of his weight into ever strike. Unfortunately, the ruthless nature Izanagi fought with caused the normally more timid Kihone to have to improvise more on the defensive, instead of properly retaliating. This of course resulted in the swats to the boy's knuckles which he was now complaining of. The young man unfolded his arms and moved to check in on the boy's hands. "Let's take a break instead. Dinner isn't going to cook itself." He instructed as he moved to Kihone and ruffled his hair. "You did well. Don't lose yourself to fear, and your strikes will land." He said as he moved toward his place of residency.
Kihone was exasperated from Izanagi's relentless blows. Sweat dropped from his teal-tipped, messy brown hair onto his tattered green robes with each gasp taken to catch his breath. For the most part, he only had variety of scuffs and a few bruises taking form under his sleeves. Izanagi only had the welt on his hand. "T-that's because yu-you never guard your wielding ha-hand when you swing wider, Iza... nagi..." Kihone wasn't even sure how he managed to time hitting the same hand three times in a row when he was barely block all the attacks that were aimed at his head or torso. Koroto's hand running through his hair also let a passing breeze cool him off a bit, and he visibly relaxed as he soaked in his older brother's advice. "I-I'll do my best Koroto-ani." Then his stomach grumbled extra loud and noticed Koroto going on ahead to make supper.
Kihone ran over to pick Izanagi back up off the ground with a friendly outstretched hand. "C'mon, Nagi-kun! Koroto has something we can cook today! Let's help out!" Once good to go, Kihone would run as fast as his little legs could to catch up to Koroto on their way home. He'd dart around people, past the occasional group, and even had to think quick to slip through a man's legs as he was carrying some timber to fix a nearby building. "Damn urchins! Stay in your orphanage and out of our way!" The man hollered angrily and went back to his business.
Koroto was always the one who was making everyone settle down it seemed like, this being no exception. Izanagi's pouting visage on the ground stared ruefully with self-pity as he internalized this. Taking a break wasn't a bad idea. They'd been outside since class let out, grabbing their makeshift weapons of stick and dried grass twine. On top of his normal exhaustion of the day, the heat had sapped his strength away without him so much as realizing.
Coupling Koroto's gentle push to end the day, Kihone had offered a hand almost as an olive branch. Izanagi knew his repetitive bashing of his hand hadn't been intentional, but seemed to happen more frequently lately. The elder brother was right, Izanagi was definitely not guarding himself. Why would he?! He wanted to be a powerful swordsman like the ninja they'd all read about and heard stories of. " Super strong ninja don't need to defend all the time Ki-HO-Neeee." He snickered. " Some day I'll be so strong that nobody can hit my hands or nuthin else because I'll be so strong, right!?" he said looking to Koroto for validation as the trio began to dash toward their home.
It was just as the three had taken off down the road that the shouts of a fairly average looking man carrying a bundle of panks caught Izanagi's ears. His almost dried eyes from his pouting session now set into a fierce childish scowl. Izanagi quickly turned on his heels and dashed back at the man, moving full speed until he came up on the man as he moved unknowingly away from the oncoming boy's attack. With a relatively swift, but entirely unskilled kick aimed at knocking the back end of the long timbers skyward which Izanagi knew would inevitably cause the man to tumble forward with the unbalanced load. As sure as he was that it would happen, it did. The boy's exposed toes cracked hard against the wood as he growled. " You don't gett'a talk bad about my brothers, Jerk!" He yelled once he'd landed, using a single finger to pull downward on his eyelid and stick his tongue out mockingly before turning tail and fleeing before the man could pursue them. Nearing the group he laughed with a carefree tone. " Better practice your ninja running now guys! We'll get eaten by the big mean baddie if you don't!" and with that, Izanagi climbed the stacks of crates and boxes against an unsteady sun shade and made his way clumsily to the rooftop and began dashing.

Kihone was running just a few steps ahead of Izanagi when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Izanagi run back to confront the man that shouted at him a moment ago. Kihone's head turned around faster than the rest of his body, throwing him into a bit of a tumble through the sandy street. "Ouch..." He groaned but quickly remembered that his brother was making a daring dash into danger. Unfortunately, Kihone just sat there slack-jawed at Izanagi's antics of kicking the worker's materials out of his hands and knocking him over in the process. "Oh... we're in big trouble now." He instinctively picked himself up to his feet as Izanagi ran past. As Kihone turned to run, he saw two of the accosted laborer's burly coworkers come out to help their boss back to his feet. All he saw after that was the boss guy point at them before all three came charging. "K-K-Koroto-aniiiiiii!!!" Kihone cried out for help as he went running after Izanagi who took the high road to evade their pursuers. Kihone instead focused on catching up to their big brother. When he did he quickly pointed out the two workers that were after them, and the boss that was chasing Izanagi onto the rooftops. Kihone knew they had to run, but he wasn't sure if they would get in even more trouble returning to the orphanage. The adults looked really angry at him and Izanagi... again.
Izanagi and Kihone ran as their pursuers were hot on their tails. Just as it seemed as though the burly men were to grab the children, a bolt of lightning crashed down between the two. In its place stood Koroto as he used his two arms to deflect the henchmen's grasping hands. He pushed them away as his eyes locked on the man who commanded them. "Follow us if you like. Just know that I will leave your bodies to the sand." He said with sharpened, hate filled eyes. The leader smirked, as he clearly knew that the boy was more bark than bite. Despite this, however, he shot Izanagi a dirty glare before he ushered his grunts to follow behind him. Once Koroto took a deep breath, however, he turned back to the kids. "Are you two crazy?!" He yelled with his hands on his hips. "If you brought those men back to our grottos then it wouldn't be you two who had to deal with the consequences, but all of the younger kids who don't have a means of fighting back." His eyes narrowed in on Izanagi. "And don't say the other guy started it. If you start a fight, then you finish it. And if they start it then you damn well better finish it. Either their blood stains the ground, or yours does. That doesn't mean death, but it does mean making your point." He said harshly. He then turned to Kihone. "That goes the same for you. If you have the strength to run, then you have the strength to fight. And there's more than one way to fight." He said. He then let out a sigh. "This is just great. I was planning on doing a monster hunt tonight in order to get enough ryo for us to have a decent meal, but can either of you tell me that you will behave enough that I can leave you guys alone?" He asked sincerely.
Kihone cowered behind Koroto as he stepped around him to intercept the other three men chasing Izanagi and himself. The sound of lightning crashing with his older brother's reentry was enough to startle anyone around, but Koroto's threat really took it home. Kihone just stared at his big bro's back in awe for standing up to the adults with such courage and strength. He was so surprised that he almost forgot that there would inevitably be a lesson or two to be learned from this moment. "I-I just ran to you, Koro-ani. I'm sorry... I didn't know what else to do." He felt like it wasn't an acceptable excuse, so he just looked like the scolded child that he was. "I'll do better next time, promise." Kotoro's words echoed in Kihone's head.
He played back what happened with the adults as best he could recall and actually tried visualizing what other options he might've had to help Izanagi- without compromising the shelter they shared with other orphans and undesirable of Sorai's small populace, 'Don't endanger those who can't fight. Finish the fight if it starts. Either they bleed or I do, even to make my... point? There's more than one way to fight, so fight if I have the strength to run.' Kihone briefly exchanged glances with Izanagi to see how he was taking these tongue lashings from Koroto, but his attention went back to their older brother when he spoke in a tone that suggested he might not be able to go to work to get food for tonight.
His stomach loudly growled right before he exclaimed, "N-no! It's okay Koro-ani! We'll behave, right Nagi-nii?" Before he even waited for Izanagi to reply he would try to sweeten the deal by trying to seem responsible, "I promise to keep us out of trouble. We'll stay home at the grotto and wait for you to come back, and we'll help make dinner!" He could only hope that it was enough to help guarantee whatever a decent meal entailed being for supper. Part of him was curious about what kind of work Koroto had found, but he never questioned how they got their meals before so why should he start now?
Izanagi had to pause as soon as he heard the loud boom that followed the crack of lighting. He sighed, knowing he was about to regret his decision before he even had a chance to enjoy the fun. He spun around on the roof top and stared with an exasperated expression at Kihone and Koroto. The eldest of the three's lecture was enough to make Izanagi snore, but he knew it probably wasn't the time for such a blatant expression of his disinterest. Izanagi sighed again, with a heavy sound of regret before he whispered under his breath. " Wouldn't be a problem if we could make a super cool ninja hideout." He wasn't all to enthused about Koroto's message, not thinking too much of angering a couple of grown ups who were mad at him. It's not like they were blood thirsty bandits. He was just having fun and getting even with them. But, what he did hear loud and clear was the line he'd been fed about finishing the fight. Izanagi nodded. " Got it big bro. Next time I'll kick him in the balls. That'll finish it real quick."
All the antics aside, when Koroto mentioned a monster hunt, Izanagi ignited his excitement in a more wholesome manner. " Monster!?! What kinda monster are we gonna be hunting Koroto oniisan!? Is that what we're eating?? If we eat a monster will we turn into one?! " his stomach growled loudly, immediately following Kihone's own. " R-right. Definitely going to behave." he glanced off to the side, not entirely believing himself.

Kihone glanced between his brothers for a moment and decided it best to take the initiative once his stomach growled again. "Let's go Nagi! I stashed some bread from last night for us to snack on." Kihone firmly tugged on Izanagi's sleeve to follow as he slipped into a nearby alley to quickly get back to the orphanage. "Hopefully nobody else found it already!" He called back to his brother as they rounded the last corner to get home. Kihone climbed up some crates stacked near the back of the building and slipped in through the little "secret" door they'd made to quickly come and go from their sleeping quarters. He peeked into the room for a few seconds before whispering back to Izanagi, "Seems all clear." It was quiet on their floor, but Kihone was pretty sure he heard the other kids out at the park in front of the orphanage. There might be a nun floating around and tidying the building, though. Kihone darted over to his bed to check for his bread, but it didn't take long to realize it was gone. "Aw.. dang." He pouted as he put his bed back together neatly then sat on it, hugging his scrawny legs with his knees tucked up into his chest.
Izanagi glanced at Kihone as he made loud growling noise. "Bro?"He said laughing in a childish tone. He sharply ended his laughter at the request to follow and the promise of bread. " YO. He didn't complain more than that, running to follow Kihone once more, only for him to parrot his disappointment. " Awwwww. I was excited...."he pouted, tears welling up for a moment. He gripped his stick tighter, looking at his bruised hands. When he looked at the weathered hands he held, he had a strong sensation." C'mon big bro! Let's go out and explore those ruins we heard about in school? We're gonna be the strongest ever, we can go show big bro Koroto how strong we are and show him we can help catch food too! Maybe a night out training and exploring will make us forget we're hungry?!"
Izanagi nodded, reassuring himself of this action. His determination to fight always made him feel less of the things going on around him, even hunger when he was set on the fight before him. Izanagi pushed over to the window, pushing open the thin curtain that blocked the sand from outside and began crawling over. "I think the place teacher talked about was to the....south? Shouldn't take long."

Kihone leaned on Izanagi as he shared in their stomach-churning disappointment, "... me too." His stomach would growl again as Izanagi suddenly jumped up and started talking about the ruins from this morning's lessons. Kihone raised his head and sat upright on the edge of his bed, "Wait, what? I mean, we could, but-" Then his brother was suddenly about to go back out the way they sneaked in after breezing over the part of his plan about possibly spending the whole night out in some rubble. His younger brother was already out of the window when he gasped, "N-Nagi! We're supposed to be good and... and- awww! Who am I kidding... you're not even listening anyway..." Kihone sighed and quickly scribbled a note that simply said,
Be back as soon as we're stronger!

Then he followed Izanagi after grabbing a couple blankets and the satchel Koroto made for him; it was filled with some toys and knick-knacks. 'If I have the strength to run, I have the strength to fight, and there's more than one way to fight.' The two would slip away into the evening twilight, with Kihone scrambling to catch up to Izanagi for the first leg of their adventure.
Izanagi had already skirted half way out of the building before hearing his brother's protest. " We already lost out on the monster hunting, what's Koroto-nii san gonna do? "
The cool desert air stung Izanagi’s cheeks as he bolted ahead, his stick swinging in wide, dramatic arcs as if he were slicing through invisible foes. The thrill of the adventure coursed through him, making his heart race in a way that felt both exciting and powerful. Each step into the open desert felt like stepping into a storybook, the kind where young warriors found treasure or fought epic battles.
“This is it, Kiho!” Izanagi exclaimed, his voice carrying across the sand. “This is where we start getting strong. Someday, people will tell stories about us, just like those shinobi we hear about!” He spun on his heels to face Kihone, grinning widely as his blanket-cape fluttered behind him. “You think they’ll call me something cool? Like... ‘Izanagi the Blade Master!’ Or, ooh, maybe ‘Shadow King Izanagi!’ That sounds awesome, right?”
He didn’t wait for an answer, turning back to face the faint outline of the ruins in the distance. The towering remnants of Sunagakure loomed against the darkening sky, their jagged edges sharp and foreboding. The closer they got, the more the shadows seemed to grow, stretching across the sand like reaching fingers. Izanagi slowed slightly, his boundless enthusiasm dimming as the silence of the night pressed in around them.
His stick, once an extension of his excitement, now felt heavier in his grip. He tightened his hold, glancing over his shoulder at Kihone, who followed a few paces behind. “It’s kinda... quiet out here, huh?” Izanagi’s voice dropped, the bravado wavering ever so slightly. “Like... too quiet. You don’t think there’s, like, uh... weird stuff out here, right?”
He laughed nervously, quickening his pace again to keep ahead of Kihone. “Not that I’m scared or anything! I mean, c’mon, I’m Izanagi the Blade Master! Shadow King Izanagi! Shadows don’t scare me!” His words tumbled out faster now, as if he could outrun the creeping anxiety settling in his chest.
As they approached the outskirts of the ruins, Izanagi hesitated, his eyes darting between the crumbling walls and the darkened alleyways they passed. The moonlight cast eerie patterns on the sand, and the faint sound of wind rushing through the hollowed-out buildings sent a shiver down his spine.
“Hey, Kiho,” he said, stopping just long enough for Kihone to catch up. He swung his stick lightly, trying to mask the unease in his voice.“You... uh, you’re good at watching my back, right? Not that I need it! But, y’know, just in case anything... jumps out at us.”
Izanagi took a deep breath, planting his stick in the sand as he puffed out his chest again.“Okay! We’re here! Let’s see what these ruins are hiding.”He glanced up at the towering structure before them, its broken silhouette cutting through the night like a jagged scar. His words were bold, but he couldn’t stop his fingers from tightening around the stick.
This was what he wanted—an adventure, a chance to prove himself. But as the shadows deepened around them, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was watching from the dark.

Kihone remembered to grab his stick from next to the window on his way down the backside of the building after Izanagi. "This is pretty exciting, Nagi! We've never gone out this far even during the day." Before long, Kihone was fully invested in the adventure despite his initial hesitation to ignore the inevitable consequences of not resisting Izanagi's impulsiveness. The evening had shifted into twilight over the desert as they boys reached the outskirts.
"Yahooo!!" Kihone cheered alongside his brother as they reached the ruins of Sunagakure. He flourished his bamboo stick over his head while his brother gave him the inspiration to dream of being as renown as the various heroes they'd heard around the village or read about in classes. Kihone watched the sun set on the horizon behind mostly buried debris dotting the sandy wasteland, "Yeah... let's become as great as Kojiro the Stormblade! Maybe we'll even get to meet the God of Shinobi someday!" Kihone started imagining what Kojiro Kanzaki or Kenshin Hyuga might look like in person based on the few stories he'd heard about them. A strong gust blew past them and brought him back to reality.
He thought about Izanagi's possible titles and weighed in with another cheer, "Oh! Shadow King Izanagi!! Yeah!" Kiho walked over to stand beside his brother when he turned back to look at the village as night fell upon them, "Then..." He pulled a few steel ball bearings from his satchel and remembered the times he'd practiced trying to make them move. He really doubted it when he accidentally noticed the anomaly before, but had been getting the hang of it lately. "I'll become the Full Metal Ninja!" The metal spheres lifted off his hand and started orbiting his hand.
Their orbit would become somewhat erratic as he shifted his focus to looking out at the quiet village. "Like... too quiet." Kihone said in sync with Izanagi, and then returned the ball bearings to his palm before chuckling in response to his brother's moment of timidness. However, Shadow King Izanagi bounced back pretty quick, as usual, "Right... no, we should be okay. I think..." He paused, catching himself in another momentary flashback to class, Kiho patted his brother on the back reassuringly and nodded, "Really Nagi? Who is better at watching your back than me, the Full Metal Ninja?!"] He grinned, barely managing to hide his own anxiety for going on this compulsory field trip.
Kihone's tone changed a bit right around when Izanagi fully regained his confidence after they wandered the outskirts of the ruins for awhile. In a hushed tone, he replied, "It's definitely gotten dark. Now we only have the stars and moon to help us see where we're going. Which also mean's that others people and things have the same problem, right? If we're gonna become great ninja, we better be good at sneaking around like they do, right?" He would rest his bamboo stick at the ready on his shoulder and keep his senses sharp, as another quick flashback helped him recall another teacher saying that there were scary people living outside of the village. 'If we're at least quiet, we probably won't run into anything dangerous...' He quietly hoped he was right in this thinking. Other people in the village had also been mentioning things like that since everyone was also always talking about how hungry they are lately. More than usual, at least.
"C'mon Nagi! Stealth mode!" He gave a hushed cheer then started making a greater effort to slip from one cover to the next like he was infiltrating some villain's evil lair. Since they were indeed trying to be sneaky, it seemed prudent to apply one of the teacher's lessons to make themselves scarce if they were in danger. He whispered a quick review to himself, "Gather and focus chakra with a hand seal, and then move that chakra through my body to become sneaky." Kihone tucked his stick into a loop he created as a makeshift scabbard and put his hands together into a ram hand seal to gather his chakra the same way as had been explained. If it worked, people who looked his way would be less likely to notice or keep their attention on him. The ambiance of the buried, dilapidated, and weathered landscape certainly added to the concern for safety but Kihone wouldn't hesitate too much or they wouldn't find a chance to get stronger, much less a place to camp when their young little minds eventually ran out of steam to continue their exploration. The pair of eight year olds were definitely nowhere near that point, though.

When Kihone’s steel ball bearings rose into the air with a faint hum, Izanagi skidded to a stop, his mouth falling open. “Whoa! That’s so cool, Kiho!”he exclaimed, his stick clattering against his leg as he pointed. “How’d you do that? You look like a real ninja!” His eyes shone with admiration, the flickering moonlight only adding to the sparkle of his enthusiasm. But as Kihone turned his focus forward, moving with calm precision, Izanagi’s grin faltered. He bit his lip, glancing down at his wooden stick. His fingers tightened around the splintered handle. “I can do cool ninja stuff too,” he muttered under his breath, puffing out his chest as if steeling himself.
He remembered the jutsu they’d heard about in school earlier that day—Shadowing Stealth Technique. It was supposed to let a ninja stay completely unnoticed, their presence slipping from the minds of anyone nearby. Even if I can’t do the shiny ball thing like Kiho, I can totally nail this! he thought, his confidence swelling. Stopping mid-step, Izanagi planted his stick in the sand and closed his eyes. He spread his arms, trying to imagine chakra coating his body the way their teacher had described. “Focus... focus...” he whispered to himself. “Coat your body in chakra... blend into the shadows... become invisible.”
He cracked one eye open, glancing at Kihone. His brother hadn’t stopped walking. Perfect. Izanagi tightened his grip on his focus, his breathing growing louder as he tried to force the chakra to obey. “Alright, here we go!” he muttered, bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet.
With a flourish, he darted forward, attempting to slink around Kihone unnoticed.. As the young Shadow King would do this, he eventually took notice that Kihone's eyes would be following Izanagi's movements. Izanagi froze mid-step, his face falling.“What?! You saw me?!” he blurted, his cheeks flushing red under the moonlight. “I was totally invisible! You’re just cheating or something!”
Izanagi’s shoulders sagged as he huffed, trudging back toward his brother. “I don’t get it. Teacher said it was easy! Just coat your body in chakra and... and...” He gestured vaguely, his frustration bubbling over. “It’s not fair! You’re out here making metal float and I can’t even do one dumb jutsu!”He scuffed his foot against the sand, pouting as he followed Kihone toward the ruins. The weight of his stick in his hand was oddly comforting, and he gave it a small swing, feeling the familiar rhythm of the motion. "Whatever” Izanagi mumbled, mostly to himself. “I don’t even need ninja tricks like that. I’ve got my sword skills. They’re way cooler anyway. Ninjas don’t need to sneak around when they’re strong enough to take on anyone head-on, right?” He nodded as if reaffirming his own words, gripping his stick tightly.
By the time they reached the outskirts of the ruins, Izanagi had mostly shaken off his frustration, though he stayed unusually quiet. His wide eyes darted toward Kihone, but before his brother could react, Izanagi’s instincts took over. He quickly planted his feet into a precise L-shape, his weaker foot pointing forward and his stronger foot pivoting to the side. His wooden stick rose into a defensive position in front of him, his grip steady despite the nervous tremor in his hands. “Kiho” he whispered, his voice tight but firm. “Did you hear that? Someone’s out there... or something.” The makeshift weapon in his hands felt lighter, almost natural, as he stood ready in the Flowing Stance. Though he’d never faced a real threat before, the position gave him a fleeting sense of control over the mounting fear clawing at his thoughts. The noise came again—closer this time. Izanagi gritted his teeth, his earlier bravado momentarily buried under a flicker of real anxiety.“I-I’ll handle it ” he added, more to himself than Kihone. “Shadow King Izanagi’s not scared of some noise...” Still, he couldn’t keep his eyes from darting nervously into the dark, searching for the source of the sound as his grip on his stick tightened. Maybe it was best to keep sneaking around and see what it was before charging into the frey? Young Izanagi did not possess the wisdom or the instinct for this quite yet.
