The desert heat harshly critiqued the gray haired young man. How he hated leaving the safety of his cove. Unfortunately, to stay out of the elements would cause his charges to be without proper food and aid. For this reason he left his home to venture along the rag tag streets of Sorai in order to gather all of the food he could. Some he gathered through his minimal funds. Others he pleaded with by catching a person’s compassion or their interest. Regardless of how he gathered the goods, he procured enough materials to make quite a few meals for the many mouths at his home. And once he entered past the tattered shroud which feigns as a door, he handed about half of the groceries to one of the more steady children while bringing the other half to a roast area with a large pile of sticks underneath it.
“Anything crawl in that we can use for some more meat?” Koroto asked the young girl in patched up clothes and an eye patch who followed him to the roast. The one eyed girl smiled as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a killed rattlesnake. Koroto looked at the corpse as his eyes softened and he took out a dagger. “Didn’t feel comfortable skinning it?” He asked as he took the snake in one hand and shot from the tip of his blade a spark of silver lightning which ignited the wood. The girl shook her head nervously, but Koroto swiftly sheathed his blade and rustled her hair to assure her that everything was alright. “No worries. Get the vegetables washed with the well water and I’ll get it taken care of.”
The girl nodded as she rushed deeper into the cave where a working well was in place. The one eyed girl was one of Koroto's most mature children. While the others caved toward the older kids to lead, she often foraged for the sake of finding an additional meal. It made his life easier. He was indebted to how much she provided. Although he didn't know if he could ever explain that to the young girl. Koroto took out his dagger once more and began to silently carve skin from muscle. The meat of a snake was much like chicken, although the bones were thinner and thus harder to remove. To compensate for this Koroto segmented the slain beast as he laid out the pieces he was not cutting along a tanned piece of leather and diligently removed the non-edible bones from each segment. The process was tedious but extremely necessary for the younger children, who easily could choke and perish if he chose to hasten his process.
Once the meat was ready, Koroto took care to move to the well himself for some water. With a large metal pot he moved to the well and filled the bowl halfway. He then moved back to his roast area and placed the metal pot on top of the flames. Once done he then proceeded to pour rice inside of the bowl. Before he cooked the rice, however, he used just a hair of his ninjutsu in order to give the rice a brief washing; conjuring to the surface all of the dirt and debris and pulling it out of the dish. Normally he hated to use any of his chakra for cooking since the cave was often a sought after target, and Koroto needed all of his energy to protect his charges. Unfortunately, with the well water lower than normal, Koroto had to spare his own resources in order to make sure the rice was cleaned.
It was just as he moved away from the pot that the girl returned with the washed vegetables. After he praised her for the effort Koroto began to slice and dice his greens. As he prepared the meal Koroto wondered how he could best make these vegetables last. With limited access to agriculture, he needed to make the most of these sacred goods to give the most to his charges. That was when he decided a soup was the best way to get the most of the nutrition, as well as it could be served well with rice as a sort of broth. Unfortunately, that was going to require another fire, another pan, and more of his access to water ninja arts.
“I need some more timber. What do we have laying around?” Koroto asked the kids. Immediately the children scrambled to find anything and everything which could be burned. After procuring a large brass cauldron which was a pain for how much water it needed but the only other pot large enough to properly cook with, the children procured a large amassment of documents and papers. Nothing of value given how most things like former Suna ninja records and prior Kazekage notes were either traded for what little yen the orphanage had, or reserved as things to be bartered with at a later date. Thankfully they found enough old scrolls to make another kindling. Once they had it Koroto wasted no time igniting the timber with a bolt of lightning, followed by filling the pot with a proper amount of water. Already he felt his resources drained, but that was a problem which was going to have to be addressed at another time.
The cauldron heating up Koroto dumped in his assortment of vegetables. Cabbage, onions, garlic, and leeks were thrown into the mix. A healthy array of spices and seasoning were measured and tossed into the mixture as well. Koroto gave the forming broth a taste. It lacked salt. Thankfully in a desert, salt was one of the easiest things to come across. Before their passing Koroto’s parents taught him how to farm it through the use of a wicker basket and water. And with his process of then having the water evaporate and resting with the sand, Koroto had farmed himself a healthy supply of it which he also used as a resource for bartering. After a good pour from his pouch the broth had a delicate flavor to it, it was then time to deal with his meat.
Since Koroto did not account for his children's charges to provide any additional meat, he used a great amount of his allotted funds in order to purchase some skinned lizards. In the desert heat there are massive salamanders imbued with chakra which offer incredible flavor to eat, but unfortunately are rather dangerous to slay. Thankfully one was available for purchase, and with his skinning dagger he peeled back the tough leather of the beast and revealed the meaty consumable components of the beast. The biggest problem, as with any unfamiliar creature, was how long to cook it.
Given the fact that he already had the snake meat to cook, Koroto initially began the experience by treating the meat like chicken. In addition to putting it on the same flame as his rice along a thin metal rod which hung above the pot, he also adorned the slender meat in an assortment of spices and seasoning. With such a lean meat Koroto prioritized flavor over substance. And as the meat cooked over the open flame the young man took the time to turn the meat so that it was evenly cooked. Of course, once the snake meat was cooked, it was time to cook up the salamander. Given the fatty contents of the salamander, Koroto went out of his way to provide additional seasoning to those parts. Once the seasoning was placed, however, he sliced away the overly gummy parts of the meat and placed them into his vegetable stew. The lean and easily digestible part of the beast he left to cook along thin metal sticks above an open flame. The results of his choice provided a euphoric sensation to the meal as a whole. When eaten together, the fat from the meat combined with the fresh herbs and vegetables would provide a salt infused taste and experience. Then combined with the rich tenderness of the meat the flavor would escalate into a multiple flavor sensation. Finally, with the fluffy rice cooked to provide the filling component to the dish, and there was now a clear way to divvy the dish to provide nutrients to all of the children Koroot had under his care. And sure enough the dish was served to everyone within the cave, and all ate with a fervent delight to the flavors.
“This is delicious.” One of the children said with a toothy grin. Koroto smiled as he prepared another plate for one of the other children. In his heart, he understood that the meal he made was quite nutritious and delicious. It was the balance in which he always strived to achieve. On the other hand, however, to reach such a balance was a delicate and nuanced process. There was no denying how sparse resources were among a desert population. Everything Koroto had to make these dishes both enriching and nutritious were lost just as easily as they were gained. And yet, Because he had so many mouths to feed, Koroto could not afford to lose himself in his despair. For this reason, Koroto made sure to provide enough meals to allot to the villagers he negotiated with as thanks for the resources they have provided. After all, if Koroto was to succeed in making a community for his charges to succeed, there needed to be a collection of individuals who saw the value in what the young man strived to provide. For this reason, a basket of stew, rice, and desert animal meat was provided to an assortment of decorated individuals who traded goods with Koroto. To each figure Koroto assigned a basket of these goods and had them traverse along his most trusted children. After all, the more he did for his charges the better. All he hoped was that he could give them everything which they deserved.
It wasn't easy living in the desert. The arid, dry desert caused many to perish under the inhuman heat. It almost crushed Koroto out of his life when he was first left to fend on his own. Thankfully, the boy was too resilient to allow death to take him. The young man forced himself to fend against the elements around him. Of course, once he gained the power to survive, it fell on him to make sure all of the other orphaned children survived. There were so many naive and innocent folks who never had a chance to survive without him. Originally, Koroto shunned his responsibility. In fact, he hated it. He was so desperate to survive, and at the tender age of ten he was expected to take care of a deluge of innocent children. Children who did not have his gifted bloodlines and expected to survive on their own. It was a miracle that they survived at this point. Especially the young lady with an eye patch. Once Koroto met her, he understood the value he held as a survivor. To live was not just to survive, but to carve a path for those who were less fortunate. It was for this reason that he swallowed his pride and learned to court the more fortunate for gifts and goods which allowed his charges to survive. He had to become more than the desert wanted for him to be. He needed to be the one who could bring others a better tomorrow. It was his duty. It was his destiny.
