Name:Erebus Race: Ice/Yaeli Gender: Male 3 Base Traits: Personality: Calculative - Reserved - Self-Sufficient Born and raised in the shadows of a prominent family, Erebus learned quickly form his relatives that you must be calculative to survive in this world. Everything he does is only done after taking much thought as to avoid trouble and the boy works things to the best of his ability to benefit without rousing suspicion from his grandparents who watch over him. He learned early on as a youngling to not ask for anything, especially affection, and has become more reserved with his emotions and wants as a result. So rather than relying upon others Erebus has become more self-sufficient and adapted to life as a loner who lives within the shadows of a great manor without any friends to help him out. Even the couple of tutors he had were selected with care and kept from really knowing much about the mysterious boy who is claimed as a cousin of the family, a boy who was adopted whenever his parents died in an accident and was brought to be raised within the family home. As soon as lessons are over his tutor is dismissed and not allowed to linger for fear that they will learn too much about Erebus instead of simply teaching the boy what he needs to know. As he grows older more lessons will be from books and less from social interactions as Erebus proves that he is capable of teaching himself and taking care of basic needs in order to keep his grandparents from constantly watching over him, something that makes Erebus feel like he's truly a beast in a cage. He even has taken to making his own meals, preferring to learn by watching the few servants who know about his existence and opting to use the kitchens late at night whenever they are empty. Description: See image. Clothing: See image. Accessories: See image. History: Cassiya Landriegh was the only child from a prominent family in Pajore. The merchant family had a good connection with a very affluent family from older wealth that they had intended upon joining through Cassiya’s marriage with Derrien Lockin, the eldest boy who obviously had eyes for the beautiful Yaeli girl. Unfortunately for the families, Cassiya caught another man’s eye one day when she was in the market and she found herself falling quickly for the dashing Zenan who wooed her for days before finally getting her into his bed. That fateful night would turn Cassiya’s family upside down as the daughter suddenly wanted to refuse the marriage with Derrien Lockin and opted to instead foster hopes of leaving Yael to travel the world with the Zenan man who had claimed her heart. Fate, however, seemed to have a different path for Cassiya as her lover suddenly disappeared and broke her heart. At first she was in denial that he would leave and waited daily by their favorite spot in the gardens near her home. Others thought that her heartbreak was what caused the initial waves of sickness but it wasn’t until weeks later that the family realized Cassiya was pregnant with the foreigner’s child. All hopes of a successful union between the families seemed lost, but then as time passed and the foreigner was never seen again the family started to pressure Cassiya to move forward. They kept the pregnancy a secret, feigning illness and traveling to the countryside for better health to get Cassiya out of the city for months until she finally gave birth.
Still, they thought that they could handle things and hide away their daughter’s mistake but it seemed the gods were not finished with the family just yet. The family’s horror only grew when they realized that not only had their daughter given birth to one hybrid child, that child also had a twin! Cursed with a doppelganger who surely was the gods’ punishment for their daughter's fling the family did what they thought was best by hiding the second child from the eyes of everyone, sending the girl to live with a distant relative far enough away to keep the boy safe for fear that meeting his doppelganger would result in his demise. So they would keep the pair apart and keep their existence a secret from each other in order to avoid any future misfortunes, keeping the doppelganger from harm as to keep the boy safe in case he was needed as heir by the family who did not want their legacy to go to ruin. The boy would be claimed as the child of a distant cousin, fit enough to take over the family name in the situation that Cassiya did not give birth to another child to inherit the family legacy while allowing Cassiya to keep up the ploy that she had never given birth to another man’s child while marrying into the other family. Meanwhile Cassiya who was jilted by her lover felt empty and hopeless, so much so that she allowed her family to direct her future by having her marry into the other family as was originally intended. Even though Cassiya refused to have anything horrible happen to her hybrid children the woman also would keep her distance to protect both her children and her own heart which still ached at the sight of those golden eyes that reminded her so much of her love. If separating the doppelganger from her brother kept her safe and denouncing them both as her own flesh and blood kept them fed and warm then so be it.
The boy’s existence was also hidden from the public eye as he was raised deep within the family’s manor by his grandparents while his mother went to marry another man as she truly had no hope that her lover would return. Erebus would be raised with the skills needed as heir while not truly knowing his future since he was taught to not expect anything other than to be around as a necessity in case the family ever needed him. Quiet and aloof the boy simply learned to stick to the shadows and study while dreaming of the outside world, his gaze always focused on the starry night sky while he thought of all the adventures that surely waited outside. While others never truly told him who his parents were, Erebus eventually pieced together that Cassiya was his mother based upon the glances sent his way whenever she visited the manor alone while every time she came with her husband he was hidden away in the back rooms or sent out to his family’s second house hidden within the city to continue his studies. Despite his curiosity about his heritage, Erebus held his tongue as he dared not risk his grandparents’ wrath and eventually he plans to try to find out more of the truth about his b*****d heritage and why there seems to be so much more to the story than a simple fling. For now though he is focused on his studies because he understands that they will prove to be important for him even if he does not become the heir and ventures into the outside world. In the case that an heir is born then Erebus knows that he would rather sneak away from home and leave Yael than linger forever in the shadows under his family's rule as a hidden mistake. Notes: Twin to Inej who is thought to be his doppelganger and curse. Soft-spoken with and graceful on his feet so that he can silently sneak around his grandparents within the manor they share. Does use reading glasses when studying. Has a worry stone a smooth rock that he rubs in between his fingers when stressed, a secret gift from a servant long ago who was unfortunately let go for hanging around the boy too much for fear that she would reveal something about the family's mistake.

♦ Merchant Path ♦
Erebus studied the piles of documents on his desk, the documents neatly organized after a morning of studying with a list of notes and observations resting in a book next to them. It was still strange that he was able to openly express his opinion on studies now. Ever since his changes, the hybrid had been a topic of discussion within the walls of his family manor and while he had originally feared the changes somehow others had been happy to see them. While his mysterious mother had moved on from her past, the teen realizing that the Yaeli daughter of the family who had went to marry their merchant ally that lived further up the streets in the wealthiest part of Pajore was truly his mother but not understanding the full story behind his abandonment, it appeared that his grandparents were still stuck on what to do with him. At first they had kept him hidden during his childhood, teaching him bare minimum just in the chance that an heir was never born and Erebus was their last resort, and then as more years passed the lessons increased and while he was still expected to hide the boy managed to sneak out of the manor more often to explore Pajore. The changes to his appearance though had seemingly inspired them as the wariness behind their gazes seemed to change into something more of interest. Somehow their opinions had shifted more now that his eyes were greenish in hue and not the golden that they were before while his crystals had lost their hue and faded towards more of a gray color closer to the darker crystals of the Yaeli race. If only his ears and eyes weren’t so different then perhaps they could have posed him as a pure cousin to inherit everything, especially since Erebus had proven himself quite capable when it came to reviewing materials and suggesting trade ideas to his grandfather who spoke more often with him now. Yet there were other whispers that floated along with such ideas, some making Erebus frown as he heard the word doppelganger and saved from the curse mixed into gossip before others shushed those that dared to speak such words in the halls. What did any of that even mean? Had his changes truly affected so much? He still wasn’t allowed at public events, hiding in the shadows of the manor with the limited staff who knew how to hold their tongues for fear of curses and the like, but it was refreshing to know that his grandfather actually looked at him with interest now rather than simple disdain. It was enough to give him a bit more movement, the teen allowed to visit the main library within the home now to gather more materials as long as there weren’t any parties or guests being hosted within the estate to catch sight of him roaming the halls. “I still don’t know how to feel about any of this.” Erebus mused quietly, closing a book before gathering up his last bit of research to return to the main library for his grandfather to review. It was a new situation they had going where he would make notes and write down ideas for their trading business and leave the books on the main desk in the library for when his grandfather had the chance to pick them up and browse through everything. Once those were reviewed then Erebus would be called in if anything caught his grandfather’s interest and they would sit at the long dining table on opposite ends for his grandfather if he had any questions or comments for Erebus while eating a meal. Erebus supposed it was a reward of some sort in his grandfather’s opinion even if the meal felt just as lonely as ever with the distance between them and the lack of family or staff to interact with for each meal. It wasn’t anything like how it could be when others visited with the table full of food and bustling with activity as staff continuously came in to serve each course to the guests that took up every chair while they stayed empty when Erebus was eating late in the evening here. And such a scene was once again ready to greet him when Erebus left the books in the library and a servant came knocking at the door only a couple of hours later.
“Master Landriegh expects you in the dining hall when the next hour strikes.” It was a simple enough statement, but the tone was significantly different than it had been just a year ago when the older Yaeli woman would once openly sneer at him like he was diseased. There was still something akin to disgust that slipped across her features when she didn’t think he was watching, but a bit more respect that made her words a little less grating and more clipped. She knew that if she wanted to keep in the household that the strange hybrid’s opinion might actually matter in the future, especially since he was touched by the gods and changed like others had been that day. It was interesting and perhaps a bit empowering to feel that shift, Erebus understanding that the gods had allowed him a step forward in surviving this world where he could feel a bit more confident and show off his skills rather than lurking in the shadows where he hoped to be forgotten. He would like to think that it was more than his changes that made such things possible, that his own skills could finally be noticed by his grandparents who realized that his advice had saved them money on multiple trades now throughout the last few months. Erebus had a knack for being a merchant and had rather enjoyed finding the best ways to earn money and learning about all the travel routes for goods and such. So while his future within the family was unknown the teen did at least know what path he wanted for himself, it was simply a matter of bringing it up to his grandfather to earn approval. If not then he still had a stash of money, savings from his own work over the years sneaking around in Pajore, and he was more than willing to leave it all behind to find a life elsewhere. He was still curious about Zena as well, wondering if his father did truly exist all the way over there in that foreign country that was supposedly full of ice and snow. For years Erebus had waited in silence, gathering knowledge and supplies to travel, because he believed he would go that way once a new heir was born. It had been years though since those dreams first formed when he was just a youngling and still no new heir had come to take his place. Even the Lockin family was worried that their precious daughter-in-law was barren, not knowing that she had actually given birth once before. Erebus only got snippets of conversations, the teen hovering by a mostly closed door as his grandparents discussed things when they thought they were alone, but it was enough to piece together that so far no heir had been found for their family at least. The Lockin family at least had another son with a wife who had given birth a couple of years back, a boy to take over their business which relieved some pressure from them while leaving his grandparents with so much more to deal with. Perhaps though things would change and they’d get their heir, but as time passed the hopes waned and Erebus going through his own changes had turned his grandfather’s attention to him. Still there was part of Erebus that wanted to travel, to see the world and gain more knowledge while also potentially visiting Zena to find out about that missing part of his life. He wanted to bring that up to his grandfather as well, but saying such a thing could result in losing any privileges he had just earned. A bit longer then. He was patient, he would wait to see what happened once he got more influence within the family as an aspiring merchant. For now this was plenty enough, he was getting more influence and becoming an actual person who could interact with the family rather than hiding away in the shadows to be completely forgotten one day. It was not the freedom he had once dreamed about, but it was something new for Erebus to discover as he realized he wanted to learn the business and become a merchant in his own rights. And if an heir did appear within the next few years? Then at least he would have the skills to take care of himself and leave Yael, he simply had to wait and see what the future held once he started down this path now that there were new options opening to him. And so Erebus headed towards the dining hall to go see his grandfather, to discuss his role in the family and his new ideas to help their business grow.
