✤ Valerian ✤
Race: Leaf Gender: Male Physical Description: From slender build to lean muscle as he lived in the forest, working on his survival skills before going overseas to study.
Personality: A soft-spoken boy who tends to listen more than speak, Valerian has a great memory and a knack for puzzles. He loves studying and readying a book rather than running about on crazy adventures though he loves to hear tales of them. He's very sweet and constantly puts others, especially his family, before himself which sometimes means he'll run himself ragged but Valerian is okay with that as long as he's helping someone out.
He's going to learn to speak up a bit more as he ages, studying medicine and healing making him a bit more confident over time. He still loves reading and prefers a good afternoon in the garden over partying with others.
History: The second child of Padma and Uzumati, Valerian was raised by his family in their small forest home. They were not completely isolated and traded/worked frequently with the nearby village but for the most part Valerian has embraced the concept of just living out in nature. He loves plants, animals and believes strongly in the spirits of the forest that are always helping to protect his family. Growing up he has visited far away places like Belrea since his grandfather and his wife are there, but he will always prefer forests and loves to study about medical herbs. In recent years he has decided to take the leap and venture overseas to expand his knowledge by studying in Belrea instead of staying within the forest.

♥ Healer Path ♥
After hours of running about the encampment, doing errands and helping out where he could, Valerian had been sent away to take a break. So he took a walk along the nearby cliffs to get some fresh air and to have a moment of quiet, the teen overwhelmed by all of the commotion within the area. Valerian had always heard that the coast of Matori was supposed to be a lovely spot to visit, the sight of the ocean against the sunset a beautiful sight for those who had never witnessed it before. While the teen realized that he should have felt more awe at the sight, the recent disaster that had affected his family so deeply made him numb to such things. He was too caught up in worry to even appreciate something like the sunrise where before he would have gladly taken the time to admire the way the amber rays spread across the glistening ocean, turning everything into golden hues with their touch. Now he simply sat twisting medical herbs in his hands, the teen pondering exactly what he wanted to do after this nightmare was over. He hated feeling like he was in the way while watching the healers running about the tents, helping those that they could when he could only volunteer to run errands and bring supplies back and forth in the encampment. Certainly he could pick up a basket and carry it across the beach, gather water and even name a few plants but what did it do in the long run? What if there wasn’t a healer available when someone cried for help next? He wanted to actually be able to tell someone what was wrong and to help mend a broken arm or worse. It shouldn’t have been a surprise then for him to realize just how deeply he wanted to become a healer. But it would take more than simply reading books to learn such a thing. Valerian let out a soft sigh at the haunting thought. He was already troubled that half of his family lived all the way across the ocean, but to actually leave behind his family and the forest he had always known? That was even more depressing of a thought. He loved the forest and the security of being in a familiar place. His parents had worked hard over the years to build whatever they needed within a clearing of the forest so that they could have a little home there. They even had a couple of gardens, storage buildings, a bathhouse, workshop and such now to help them with whatever they would need to survive out in the forest. Their main home though was a giant tree turned into an elaborate treehouse with multiple levels and safe places for them to sleep at night, away from the forest floor and any creature that dared to venture into his father’s territory. There was the gentle chiming of crystal leaves as the weeping willows swayed in the wind, the sound acting as a warning before a spring rain or summer storm swept through the forest. Such weather would rarely destroy much thanks to his father’s hardwork and construction efforts, but it would quickly silence the normal chitter of birds that one would wake up to every morning. Valerian had learned during his trip to Belrea that not every place had such a relaxing sound, the peacefulness of the forest forgotten in the crowded city where one could barely sleep at night for all the sounds of earthlings walking outside on the streets no matter what time of day or night it was. But wasn’t Belrea one of the best countries to go and learn medicine in? That was why his own grandfather had left Tale from what he had gathered…which had led to his aunts and uncles being born overseas. And now indirectly it had gotten them into this situation where his grandmother was missing, hopefully to be found soon now that a search party had been formed and included his own father who was an expert tracker. At least his father could help out like that while Valerian simply felt useless even as he was carrying supplies back and forth from tents for the healers and offering tea or water to those who needed a drink. It was enough to prompt him to truly consider his options for the future. Based on everything he had witnessed over the last day since arriving in Matori the teen knew that books simply wouldn’t be enough to be a great healer. He would have to experience these situations, learning firsthand what it was like to work with a patient instead of simply reciting something he saw in a book. Even something he considered simple like brewing tea took practice, the herbal remedies that he brewed sometimes turning out too bitter or strong depending on the recipe that he tried to follow while growing up. In a situation like this though where it was life or death there was far more of a gamble to try following something in a tome with no real experience, his own hands shook too much even trying to make tea after some of the sights he saw since arriving. It made him question his resolve. Was he ever serious about becoming a healer like his grandfather? It was almost like a fool’s thought to think that he could simply stay hidden within a forest and just become some sort of hermit scholar who read and never put his work into practice. How could he help others if he stayed hidden all of his life? The injured wouldn’t always be able to come crawling to him, not when he was somewhere deep within a forest living away from the rest of the world. This wasn’t like his father who had been tossed from a safe home by unfortunate events and forced to survive in the wilderness. Valerian knew what it was like to be in a city or town and had witnessed firsthand how badly others needed help in times of disasters like these. His own family had needed that help with this recent disaster, what if no healers were around because they were all living in remote places and hiding so that they could study in peace without actually interacting with the rest of the world? They could have lost Isaia already with how injured he was. Maybe Valerian wouldn’t be the one missing Zadia, maybe it would be time for his family to miss him. The very thought made Valerian frown. Was travel necessary? No matter how much he tried to think of another route there wasn’t anything that came to mind. It wasn’t as if there was some expert healer near his own home, there was just a simple midwife and herbalist who helped out those. Nor did he imagine he could get the same quality of education from anywhere else in Tale. Valerian didn’t believe his grandfather would have just left his home on a whim to go to Belrea. The teen had experienced the city, hating the noise but understanding there was a wealth of knowledge there for those who sought it. The academy alone was known worldwide for its inventions and teachings. Truly, there was nothing like what Belrea offered…was this possibly the same inner struggle his own grandfather felt when leaving Tale for the first time? Valerian’s gaze lowered as he made his decision, the recent images of the injured flashing behind his closed eyes. “I want to help make a difference.” He acknowledged finally, his voice soft and somewhat wistful as he realized that his innocent childhood in the forest was slipping away. He was going to miss it. One day Valerian hoped to return and visit but even he knew that he couldn’t fully live in such a secluded place again, not if he wanted to continue helping others as a healer. He would just have to let his family know that when all of this was resolved that he would be traveling for a bit to study. Valerian realized he would have to talk to Zadia first, to let her know that he could go with her if she was taking a ship back to Belrea. She wouldn’t be facing the ocean alone that way and he could have a familiar face when entering a strange country. Despite visiting in the past, Valerian still felt out of place in the bigger cities and even his love for bookstores did nothing to settle his stomach when thinking about returning to such a crowded place. But that was part of being brave, right? Facing that which actually scared you and pushing forward anyways. He just hoped his family would understand and realize that this wasn’t an easy decision for him either, he truly hated the idea of leaving his forest home but Valerian was determined to learn and grow as a healer. He didn’t want to continue feeling useless like this, that was for certain and he would do whatever it took to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to help others.
