Clack, clack.

Beige boots landed, one by one, on a field of blue prismatic stone. It sure had taken some work to find this place again. Sometimes it moved, just a little bit, enough to make him have to go through the whole process of tracking it down again. It wasn't a planet, or even an asteroid -- just an island in space that could easily go unnoticed if one didn't know how to look for it.

Thankfully, Kurma did.

He was here to check on something.

The ring of footsteps on stone was easy enough for him to identify. He was always here, after all. Besides, no one came here any more and so, so few had even come back then.

Yuki was a bit miffed. Yuri — Erytheia — hadn’t been back in what felt like ages. How dare he leave Yuki alone for so long? Well, he was a knight know. Perhaps the boy thought he had no more need for his ancestor.

Preposterous!

Yuki walked across the stone of the lone island as he had done countless time, even though his weight was little more than mist on the ground. He expected to find Erytheia, but that was not who was standing there, the name sake of the place being nowhere to be found. Instead, he found another person entirely…

“Kurma!”

His mouth was agape and not full of more words for once, which was quite the accomplishment indeed for one lone visitor.

The familiar face and voice made Kurma perk up immediately, and he turned fully to greet the former Knight. "Yuki!" he said, jovially. "Wow, I wasn't expecting you to still be around! How've you been? I brought along some little cakes if... oh."

A more careful look at Yuki brought his current, misty state to clarity. "Can't eat anymore, huh... sorry, friend." A bit of sympathy tinted his expression and deep voice. "Why are you still hanging around here, then? The Cauldron's not so bad, you know."

Yuki would have recognized him anywhere. Not only because he remembered everyone who ever came to Erytheia (there really weren’t that many), but also because there was something odd about Kurma. Considering his own state now and the fact that Kurma was still flesh and blood just confirmed this to Yuki.

But he didn’t say anything about it.

“I am not staying around because I don’t want to return to the Cauldron.” He said with fake indignity. “It’s all got to do with the current Erytheia.”

He eyed the food enviously.

“You know, kids these days. He’s a bit of a mess. Not sure what he would do without me.”

The way Yuki shifted, it was clear there was more that he wasn’t letting on.

"Oh," said Kurma. "Knight business, I see." It was a bit amusing, honestly, to see his old acquaintance in a huff over his descendant. Noting the impatient shifting, he said, "And you look like you could use an excuse to talk about it. Go on, hit me. I got time."

He was here for a reason, but it could wait if he could ease Yuki's mind a bit.

“Erytheia went off to university. Now I had assumed that was some sort of knight academy on Earth, but no! The kid ghosted me…” He stopped to be pleased for a moment with his own turn of phrase. “… for two years. Can you believe it?”

He seemed to be okay now that he had someone to complain about his protégée to.

“So… why are you here anyway? It’s been so long.”

He seemed lonely again and his tone more somber now.

Ghosted by a ghost. Kurma chuckled appreciatively, though the direct meaning of that phrase was unknown to him. Context offered enough clues for it to make sense: Yuki's next in line was proving to be an intangible and unpredictable presence. No offense to present company, of course.

"Come on now, you probably already know that, right?" He crossed his arms and tilted his head expectantly. "Besides getting to chat you up again, why else would I be here? I'm here to check on that thing I asked you to do last time I showed up. And the time before that."

There was a pause as he unwrapped one of the snack cakes he had brought.

"You did do it, right?"

“About that…”

Yuki shifted awkwardly.

Yes. About that. Yuki had been around long enough to know this wasn’t your average house call. Very few people came to Erytheia and even fewer came without a reason. In fact, he had known the reason Kurma had come here the moment he arrived. He would have been lying if he said he wasn’t still surprised all the same. Kurma should be dead — as dead as the former knight was now.

But Kurma was still very much here. And so was the object he came for.

“Yuki? Are you talking to yourself again?”

The voice was a ways off, but the aura was certain. Erytheia.

“I know you’re still angry that I went off for so long, but you don’t have too —!”

The young knight Erytheia appeared and shifted awkwardly, not unlike his predecessor. The look on his face was equal parts shock and confusion. His amber eyes shifted from Kurma to Yuki.

“Oh. Um. You have a guest?”

A look of disappointment began to slide across Kurma's features at the beginning of Yuki's reply. However, at the arrival of the newest knight of Erytheia, his face snapped right back to its usual easygoing smile, and he offered an enthusiastic and friendly wave.

"Hi there! You must be Erytheia Junior!" he greeted. "The clothes sure match. I was just over here checking in on Erytheia Senior, seeing how he's been... I took a dip in the Cauldron since the last time I saw him, but..." With a chuckle, he tugged meaningfully at his own unusual garb. "My clothes haven't changed either, so we're still getting along great. Here, have a cake. Yuki can't eat it."

He tossed the second snack cake to the younger Knight.

"Maybe you can help me out, friend. I was just asking Yuki here if he'd done something important I asked him to do before he died." He peered back over to the ghostly elder, and a bit of seriousness in his eyes broke through the carefree grin. "However, it's sounding like he didn't do it. I don't know much about Knights, I admit, but I think that means it's your job now. So, Yuki, why don't you tell your kid what he's in for?"

“A dip in the Cauldron?…” Erytheia said with that sideways tilt of the head that signaled outright disbelief. Did he mean the Galaxy Cauldron?

He caught the cake not once taking his eyes off Kurma.

Yuki scoffed as his protege mindlessly opened the little snack cake. What he wouldn’t give to taste that treat…

But Kurma’s words kept his mind on the task at hand, as much as Yuki resented being ignored for the knight who had a body. But it was true. He hadn’t done what Kurma had asked and now he was unable to.

Erytheia on the other hand could do what he had not.

“That is Kurma. Not that he introduced himself.” Yuki put a petulant hand on his hip. “But I’m sure he can tell you all about it since he doesn’t seem to need me.”

He looked to Kurma with a playful grin.

“Well, since this isn’t your first go round the Cauldron… tell him.”

He looked to Erytheia as if sizing him up to see if he was ready.

“Tell him about the Astraya Artifact and how to destroy it.”

"Astrayan?" Kurma huffed and shook his head, though the grin didn't leave. "Yeah, sure. Here's lesson one for you, Erytheia Junior... Everyone by Yuki's time agreed Astraya is a myth. You'd have to be really out of the loop to think it's real. Stars alive... I thought you knew that."

His gaze at Yuki was pointed and piercing, but brief.

"As for how, that's simple. You just need the same equipment or magic you might use to demolish any other building. And there's one other thing about all this..."

Kurma paused to take a bite of the snack cake in his hand. He ate with no etiquette or grace, dropping crumbs all over the Wonder's crystalline ground. "Sailor Cosmos herself has been helping me get rid of these things. She agrees the people who built them are dangerous. So if you're a Cosmos Knight... I'm pretty sure that means helping me out here is your job." A bit of impatience, a bit of agitation, colored the tone of his voice, as if he was talking about an itch on his back he couldn't quite reach. "So you might have some questions to answer when you get back to the Cauldron, Yuki. Just saying."

Erytheia had so many questions. But the pout on Yuki’s face meant that he wasn’t going to get answers from him. When his ancestor was in a mood — and he was in the biggest mood that the young knight had ever seen him in right now — he knew to expect him to be uncooperative. But he’d never seen him quite like this.

“Well, if Cosmos herself said so, then by all means…” Yuki crossed his arms. A small weak whine could be barely heard: If it was so important to her, why didn’t see tell me?

Erytheia finally understood Yuki in that brief moment, knowing how he felt about Cosmos and longing for direction that so rarely came.

“I would do it.” Erytheia turned to Kurma. “But I only have the magic to heal things, not destroy them.”

Yuki shifted again.

“About that…” Yuki rustled around his kimono. Producing an object from his obi, he held it out to Erytheia. And Kurma. “This item had the power to destroy that thing.”

In his hand was an ancient arrow with a scroll of paper attached to it.

“In life, I could never open it.” Yuki looked to Kurma, ashamed. “I wanted to destroy it, but I was not strong enough. Maybe he will be.”

Well, that took care of that. Finally. Kurma was visibly relieved to know that eyesore on an otherwise beautiful and innocent Wonder would be gone.

"I'm sure he will be," he said, "with a mentor like you around." He grinned and winked at the ghost. "Thanks for following through on this. I owe you one. Now, if you'll excuse me... I got places to go and things to do. Catch you at the Cauldron, Yuki."

He gave the Knight and ancestor a friendly, gracious wave, and then, with a swell of amber light -- he was gone.

Erytheia watched helplessly as Kurma just up and left. He had so, so many questions. He could swear both Kurma and Yuki must be related to Cosmos with the way they both avoided answering his real questions.

Yuki opened his mouth to say some sort of sarcastic retort, but his uninvited guest was already gone. He sighed.

He wouldn’t admit it, but Kurma was more then a match for him and always had a way of figuring things out.

Erytheia on the other hand…

“Well, that thing isn’t going to destroy itself, you know.” Yuki turned his attention to his protégée. “If Kurma believes you can, you shall be the one to do it. Besides, why would that spell be wrapped around an arrow if not for your bow. After all, my weapon never took that shape.”

And if Erytheia can do this, then perhaps, when that day comes, he will be ready…
