Mini Game: Solitaire

There isn't much to do for fun in this abandoned village, but it seems that whoever--or whatever--was here last had a favorite way to pass the time: cards.

Rules

Quote:
Roll 2 10-sided dice; if both numbers match, you will OOCly win one IC RP Item (one time use only) of your choice or one growth item! You may roll once per hour block (so, once from 12:00 PM-12:59 PM, and once from 1:00 PM to 1:59 PM, etc). You can only win once! This event will run from now until the end of the Halloween Event at ~8pm EST on October 30th!

Update 10/29 : From this point on, there are no cooldowns! You may post as many times as you like, as often as you like! However, please number all rolls after this point in time. If you do not roll doubles within the next 10 rolls, you will automatically be granted a 'win'.

When you roll matching numbers, you must quote the mule, The Space Cauldron and make sure you update your item claim log after winning! Your character may win any of the current one time use event items found here or any non limited edition, one time use RP Items found in our IC RP Item thread. If you are claiming a Growth Item, make sure you post in the Growth Item Log!

If you make a mistake in rolling, do not delete it. Please just strike it out and roll again! If you have any questions, please PM The Space Cauldron and we'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Good luck, everyone!

OPTIONAL PROMPT:

Quote:
Prompt 10: There are few traces of any human life in the strange village; personal affects are hard to find but--strangely--there is a pack of cards in plain sight atop a table. There doesn't appear to be anything remarkable about them; they have a simple design on the back and though there are no numbers, there are designs to indicate the identity of the card. It seems like a standard deck of playing cards--except, the joker card looks strangely like the monster lurking in the forest. There is something strangely hypnotic about the card, and if you stare at it for too long when you look up again you may see the creature standing before you. By the time you blink he's gone, but a sense of unease lingers in the room afterwards.

It turned out the worst thing about living in this village wasn’t the lack of any modern conveniences or whatever terrors lurked about, but the fact that there was absolutely nothing to do.

Aquamarine was bored. He didn’t care to fraternize with any of the other people unfortunate enough to be there, and exploring the forest or any of the decrepit buildings yielded nothing of interest. There was no music to listen to, no television to watch, no books to read, and nothing available for him to draw with. There was barely anything decent to eat, just fruit and random crops and dried meat he couldn’t identify and therefore didn’t trust. Any sort of decent cooking was out of the question despite the available utensils; Aquamarine learned a lot about fending for himself after leaving home, but an old, shabby apartment in Destiny City hadn’t prepared him for a place like this.

The only source of entertainment he found turned out to be a deck of playing cards, sitting innocuously atop a table in the house he’d commandeered with Jet. While Jet was busy elsewhere, Aquamarine sat with a sigh and shuffled through the cards. They were as dull and boring as everything else, rather plain looking and without numbers, but they were all he had to pass the time.

He stopped shuffling when he came upon the joker — terrifying beast that it was. Aquamarine’s expression creased with displeasure, aggravated first by his presence here and his inability to leave, and now by this thing in the forest, coming in the night with the fog. He had no desire to encounter it but could find no other explanation for their being there except that this creature might somehow be responsible.

Before Aquamarine could continue shuffling, he found himself transfixed on the card. His fingers, having already touched a ragged edge and smoothed out a creased corner, stilled against the card as he stared unblinking at the image upon its face. His train of thought came to a temporary halt. For a moment, he was unaware of his surroundings. He could not even hear Jet rummaging around in another room.

Seconds passed, perhaps as much as a minute, then Aquamarine managed to tear his eyes away and look up, only to see the creature there in the house, standing before him threateningly.

Shock and fear rooted him to his chair. Aquamarine knew he should summon his weapon and shout a warning to Jet, but he couldn’t seem to move and his voice failed him, stuck in a throat gone tight with dread. The creature did not move, and Aquamarine, wary of provoking it, remained equally still. Any moment, the creature could attack and he would surely be killed.

As terrified as he was, Aquamarine had no intention of taking his eyes off of the monster before him; he would rather see his death coming than be caught by surprise. It was only instinct that compelled him to blink, and it happened so quickly he almost wasn’t aware of doing it, except that the creature immediately vanished.

Aquamarine blinked again and cautiously glanced around the room, but the creature was truly gone. There was not a single trace of it, almost as if it had never been there at all. It left behind only a nervous twist in his stomach and a chill down his spine.

And the playing cards, which earned a startled flinch and were quickly cast aside as soon as Aquamarine’s eyes once again landed on the joker.

Athalia - Senshi of Hercules Beetles

When it came to survival a man had two choices, he could either stand alone, or he could draw others to him and pool resources, skills and strength. Despite his wanderings within Destiny City, it would have been wrong to assume that if given a choice, Athalia chose to be alone. In the grand scheme of things the solitude had been thrust upon him and finding allies had been much harder than he had anticipated. Had anyone known then it wouldn't have been a surprise to them to realise that when asked to make the choice between the role of lonewolf and acting as one of a collective... he would always choose to be part of the collective.

There was safety in numbers and if one surrounded themselves with people that they knew, trusted and even loved, then they would be stronger for it. While he couldn't say that he had secured the company of all of those individuals, those who had stumbled upon his path and now found sanctuary within the walls of the home that they had settled upon as their shelter, he had come to believe that they were capable. Dark Mirror or Order, what loyalties they may have had in the world beyond this one were irrelevant, and for now both functioned as one unit.

While he might be the only one with some muscle, each individual that had found their way to him (or Metis, if he were to be honest), each possessed a unique ability and set of skills that reassured him that if things went south then things might turn out ok.

With his 'team' gathered, he now spent the better part of his days exploring when supplies had already been gathered. Whether it was in search of a new supply hub, for signs of life, or even for clues as to what might lie beyond the mist, he was on the look out for it; and who knew, perhaps he might find it.

So far he had come up empty handed and though there seemed to be no indication that this would change any time soon, there was still something in the back of his mind that encouraged him to keep going. After all, when all seemed to be completely lost, something else always happened to change the tide. Keep looking, stay vigilante and in time, something might reveal itself to you...

Stepping into what seemed to be the remains of the a bar, he could only assume this might have been where Shaowei found some of her supplies previously. The cellar below would certainly have been large enough to contain plenty, but with no need for food at this point he left it alone. Instead, he looked about him in search of something more trivial... A sign that at some stage there had been other life within this world.

He was rewarded with a pack of playing cards.

What?

Curiosity got the better of him and he should have known better, but before he could even chastise his inner child his hand had already extended to pick them up and inspect. A shuffle of the deck and it was clear to him that there didn't seem to be anything inherently special about them; and yet as he finished breaking the deck and flipped the cards over in his hand he was greeted with the sight of it.

A jolt and he dropped the cards, showering them to the ground as he looked down and his own hands in surprise. They'd betrayed him, he'd been spooked, and yet as he looked back towards the cards that now fluttered through the air and landed upon the ground he was greeted with the face of a Joker and not of that which plagued him.

Unsettled he turned his attention to his immediate vicinity again and with no sign of mist or monster he narrowed his eyes.

Perhaps it was better to leave some things undisturbed, eh?

He left the cards as they were, scattered upon the floor, and turned on his heel. Whatever might have lay in the basement below could wait, at this particular moment in time, he had a much greater preference for being outside in what little 'fresh' air they had available.
