An Introduction

As we come to the half-way point of The Court's second year in the valley, there's an overwhelming sense of appreciation for the great, many things they have learned from and uncovered about this new home; not just for the benefit of the Elves themselves, but for the benefit of the territory at large. They are better equipped to nourish the land these days, cultivating what they need while leaving the majority to its wild growth. And it seems as if every day an Elf can be heard whispering of some secret they've just come across, be it strange plants found in dark corners or hidden passage ways leading through the valley safely. When it's all put together, observed as a collective growth, this wealth of knowledge, woven out of experience, has served to renew hope within the Elven mindset. In some cases, it has planted an entirely new seed, one of self-empowerment. Their losses, their migration, their ultimate survival, it is all a reminder that even Elves are wolves, and wolves are not always defenseless...

Additionally, the Elves have further familiarized themselves with the valley's seasonal nuances. Like, when the spring brings in a plethora of Wildlife who consume the fruits of trees and bushes before they can be harvested for later use. Or, when the heat of summer is far too great, and the fruits that remain are dried up before noon.

Every season is a little different, for as much as it is similar to the last, but most of The Court's members seem confident enough with their stashes of goods and intend on spending the rest of the season relaxing, celebrating, or otherwise. They're certain they will survive without issue. They've made it this far, haven't they? But there is at least one member who is not so readily convinced. One who knows that the recent spring and summer yielded for less than hoped for, and calculates that, perhaps, what they've harvested will not be enough to make it through winter.

    User Image

In an effort to prepare for whatever dangers may lie within months to come, Salvation, a Healer within the pack, has decided to enlist the help of any willing member he can find to harvest as many medicinal plants as they can manage. He knows full well that not every creature can be an herbalist, but he hopes that his descriptions will aid them in their hunts, in the end providing the pack with a surplus of goods as opposed to the bare minimum.

You have been approached by Salvation personally. You get the sense that he is somewhat apprehensive to do so but is confident enough in his speech to move you into action. He spouts out details, warns you of plucking herbs with your teeth directly, and sends you on your way with a leather skinned pouch to fill. As he passes it over, he urges you to do your best, ensures that whatever you bring back will be of help, and thanks you for your willingness to participate.

Then he moves on to the next member he sees, starting over from the beginning.

Event Starts: August 24th (at 5PM EST)
Event Ends: August 31st (at 10PM EST)

This event auto-triggers every hour after 5PM EST. You do not need my permission to post your rolls on/within the hour.

. . .

    Rules

The goal of the game is to gather as many medicinal plants as you can! Characters with the highest number gathered wins!
    • This game is based a heckin lot on trust! Please do not cheat!
    • Players can only choose 1 Murkwood character to participate in this mini-event! Characters must be a part of the pack to qualify.
    • Players are encouraged to roleplay their characters interacting with their finds! A 'completed' roleplay for this event (that qualifies for the additional prize) consists of at least 50 words per post. As it can be tedious however, this is not a requirement!
    • Players must post their forms in this thread!
    • Players can roll every hour after the initial 'GO' post. You can roll at the top of the hour OR at any point within it, up to :59. If a player misses an hour, they cannot make up for it. If you attempt to post at :59 but your Gaia post rolls over into the next hour, please update your 'Hour Rolled' to reflect this. That roll will count for the new hour. Players caught cheating (rolling multiple times within an hour or attempting to make up for an hour they have lost) will be disqualified from the event. Repeat offenders may be barred from all Murkwood events moving forward.
    • Players may sign up at any time until the event ends, however you must post your character in the "Pay It Forward || Players List" channel of the discord before doing so!

    Rolls and Rolling!

    • Players will randomly generate a number between 1-22 once(1) every hour.
    • Each plant has a number associated with it, so whatever number you land on, that is the plant (or sometimes, situation!) your character finds!
    • There are situations that might impede your character's progress! This is all a part of the game!
    • You will notice that I've attached additional plants + information such as uses within the pack/medicinal properties, etc. That is mostly for flavor! However, characters who want to later utilize this list for their own means are welcome to do so.

    Prize

Most Medicinal Herbs Found: +1 Green totem (+1 additional if you meet the optional RP rule) + 1 Marking potion and 1 color tonic (of your choice)
Runner Up: +1 Green totem (+1 additional if you meet the optional RP rule)

User Image User Image User Image User ImageUser Image

    [ Medicinal | Poison | Decorative/Aromatic | Random Encounters | Unknown ]

    . . .

Medicinal Herbs: Used as is, or to create tonics, salves, potions and more. Crucial for healers.

Poisonous Herbs: Most of the Elves who would have called this their specialty have perished; or, at the very least, are thought to have. With a handful of apprentices left within The Court's midst, it is difficult to say whether or not the art of poison has left them completely. Some believe that it will help in the fight against the Trolls, but others question its lengthy process and, often times, strategic implementation. Additionally, it was once used against their own kind, Elves poisoning Elves to gain leverage or status or otherwise. There is a valid fear that it's reintroduction will, once again, corrupt The Murkwood Court.

Decorative/Aromatic Herbs: Although not necessarily the most pertinent of plants for Healers, it is still a welcomed find as Harvesters and Earthweavers are most familiar with these and can put them to good use!

Random Encounters: Situations and circumstances that are unexpected and will hinder your character progress.

Unknowns: You come across something unfamiliar... certainly the healers will know what it is?

    . . .

    The Finds

    User Image

You've traveled all across the valley to find these....

[1 - Unknown] A vine: Earth-bound vines. It's base color is a deep purple, almost black, with lightly glowing leaves that pulsate. They give out a very soft sound that can be heard in pure silence; like hearts beating. The leaves, due to the glow, appear lilac in color while alive and attached to the main stem. When you remove a leaf, the glowing within it fades and it withers immediately. Shortly afterward, there is a moment where the rest of the plants' light dims and the sound of beating hearts stalls... then just as suddenly as it all seemed to stop, it resumes glowing and pulsating without issue. You manage to pull a cluster of vines from the root and that seems to keep the plant alive. For now. These can be found in the dark recesses of the forest, where little to no light is found.

[2 - Medicinal] Lavender: A fragrant plant with violet/lilac/gray-green foliage, upright flower spikes, and a compact shrub form. One can find Lavender in the meadows.
Benefits: Oils can be extracted to use this plant orally, although healers would advice against frequent and heavy use in this fashion. Oils are also used topically. The plant in its raw state is also beneficial. It is known to be antibacterial/fungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, pain relieving, and calming, depending on how it is used. Most healers carry a small pouch filled with the flower pods, dried and lightly crushed, to aid in the soothing of worried minds and will often give pinches to individuals who struggle with sleep.

[3 - Poisonous] Amaryllis: Bulbous flowered plants with strap-shaped, green leaves that come in shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. Occasionally one might find a striped and multicolored variation, usually combining shades of pink or red with white. The valley has an invasive strand of Amaryllis (not necessarily native to this region) that has sprouted near the base of the Bleeding Earth.
Uses & Symptoms: Multiple bulbs are smashed and liquefied into a poison to create respiratory distress. At higher doses, Amaryllis is thought to purge the body while simultaneously suffocating its victim.

[4 - Medicinal] Mint: A perennial with very fragrant, toothed leaves and tiny purple, pink, or white flowers. It has a fruity, aromatic taste. Mint can be found anywhere within the valley.
Benefits: It has powerful antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. It is also a natural decongestant that helps break up phlegm and mucus. Mint has also been known to soothe an upset stomach, reduce gas, and stave off nausea and motion sickness. As a bonus, it can help to freshen one's breath.

[5 - Decorative/Aromatic] Twin Flower: Pink to white bell-like flowers that hang on thin, y-shaped stalks and meet on a single stem. They are small and frail in appearance, and while not in bloom are often overlooked/crushed by passerby. It is thought that, when this plant is found by a pair of loved ones, it acknowledges them as 'twin souls'. Found mostly in The Forest of Eternal Life, within the darker, damper portions hidden beneath thick canopies. They are predominantly used as decorations, and symbols of eternal love.

[6 - Random Encounter] TLC: The plant was either dead before you got to it or your harvesting skills could use some work... either way, it will make better compost than it will ointment. You could always take it to the Terraformers but... this time around you managed to come up empty-pawed. Try again!

[7 - Medicinal] Calendula: A bright yellow/orange Marigold with several thin petals stacked atop one another. Where there are clearings in The Forest of Eternal Life, you will find Calendula's.
Benefits: When used topically, crushed and made into a paste, it can generally heal most open wounds. Cuts, scrapes, burns, etc. Orally, it can help improve the immune system and has a calming effect on the nervous system. It is known to be pain reliving, with antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and astringent properties. As a fun note, Calendula's are often the plants used to provide yellow and orange dye to wolf pelts and cloths.

[8 - Medicinal] Comfrey: A tall, tuberous-rooted clumping perennial. It has pale flowers and dark green leaves. Clusters of these plants can be found near the Hidden Pass and the Coastal Causeway.
Benefits: Known for its fast tissue healing. Generally applied topically to help heal flesh wounds. When applied to a bleeding injury, it can help to stop the flow rather quickly. When used as a salve or a tea, it can help the process of alleviating sore joints and swelling.

[9 - Unknown] A mushroom: An otherwise tiny bit of fungi that is brown when undisturbed but changes color and size when threatened. Upon your approach it grew twice as large and morphed before your very eyes. Upon closer inspection, the surface appears to be shimmering with an assortment of colors that, from afar, give the illusion of a poisonous mushroom. They can be found in the meadows where moisture gathers, or in the caverns along the beach.

[10 - Medicinal] Plantain: A low growing herb with broad, medium green leaves sprouting right out of the soil in flat rosettes. Found predominantly in lush portions of the forest.
Benefits: Used for insect bites and stings as well as poison ivy burns to draw foreign bodies from the wounds. It is always applied as a poultice.

[11 - Medicinal] Aloe vera: A stemless or very short-stemmed succulent with thick, greenish, fleshy leaves that fan out from the plant’s central stem. The margin of the leaf is serrated with small teeth. Clusters of Aloe plants line the Hidden Pass.
Benefits: When worked into an salve, it can sooth irritated skin, heal burns, and reduce pain or inflammation. Rarely used on deep wounds or severe burns. Apply directly from the plant. Avoid consumption.

[12 - Random Encounter] BZZZ: You didn't hear the bee during your hunt, so why would you have seen it? All tucked up and sleeping sweetly in a flower... your giant nose snort-snort-snorting in its tiny bee face, why, you would panic too, wouldn't you?! You have been stung by a bee! But don't worry, it's the kind that keep on living long after they've left their mark... Your next roll is forfeit. Players must skip the next hour of play!

[13 - Medicinal] Yarrow: Many tiny, tightly-packed flowers rising above clusters of ferny foliage. The flowers may be yellow, red, pink, or any shade in between. These plants can be found anywhere within the valley.
Benefits: When used as a salve, Yarrow is a great anti-inflammatory. Like Calendula it can help stop bleeding as well as build new tissue. Generally used to treat bruises, sprains, and strains. It also has antibacterial/fungal properties, so it benefits cuts, bites, burns, and stings.

[14 - Decorative/Aromatic] Beargrass: Leaves are long, grass like in appearance, dull green, and rough to the touch. Flowers are white or cream in color and slightly fragrant. Typically used as decoration for items or dens. There are clusters that tend to grow closer to the Coastal Causeway.

[15 - Random Encounter] A Steal!: Something chittered at your back but you ignored it. You think you heard it again but chose to keep your nose to the soil. Oh look! You found a good one! But when you finally look back at your satchel you realize that a bundle of something else has gone missing... A small furry critter has taken a liking to your find and swiped it! Choose one of any plant on the list, and two of your own. You gain the new herb and lose two from your stash. Please note how you have resolved this in your stash!

[16 - Decorative/Aromatic] Woods' Rose: A bushy shrub with prickled stems and leaves made up of several widely spaced sharp-toothed leaflets. They sport pink flowers with red rose hip fruit. The flowers and berries are sometimes used for dye. Woods' Rose can be found anywhere within the valley.

[17 - Poisonous] Bishops Weed: A thin green stalk at the end of which grow individual sprigs of white flowers. A plant which thrives anywhere within the valley.
Uses & Symptoms: Can be used dried and hidden in meats or ground up and turned into a poison. Causes vomiting and difficulty swallowing. At higher doses, Bishops Weed suppresses the ability to eat and drink.

[18 - Poisonous] Buckwheat: Grows quickly and produces small white five-petaled flowers. The valley's strain of buckwheat grows in the meadows where they are heavily pollinated.
Uses & Symptoms: If consumed by dogs, this plant can cause photosensitization, a condition in which the skin becomes hyperactive following exposure to sunlight. This condition typically results in tissue damage and discomfort.

[19 - Medicinal] Evening Primrose: Evening primrose flowers are also called 'moonflowers' because they bloom as the sun begins to set. A yellow flower with four petals, produced on a tall spiked stem. These tend to grow near the pools of the valley, however clusters have been seen in The Forest of Eternal Death as well.
Benefits: Once the oils are extracted, this herb can be used both topically and orally. It may take several weeks before one notices the changes. Its main benefits seem to be the soothing of dry, irritated skin, enriching of fur texture and sheen, as well as the reduction of inflammation in joints. Evening Primrose has been a part of the Elven 'beauty routine' for many years, contributing to the gorgeous fur in which most possess.

[20 - Decorative/Aromatic] Lupine: Soft green to grey-green leaves which may be densely coated in silvery hairs. The leaf blades are usually divided into 5 to 28 leaflets. The flowers can come in a variety of colors and line a tall spike which juts from the stem. Most predominantly a pale pink to yellow to white gradient variety can be found here in the valley, mostly within the hidden meadows of The Forest of Eternal Life. Sometimes the plant is used for dyes, while other times they are merely plucked and their flowers fastened to fur.

[21 - Decorative/Aromatic] Pine Needles: Thin green needles which fall from the great pine tree and can be found anywhere the pine tree is located. They are sharp, firm, and fragrant when crushed. Their uses vary, from aromatic mixtures to fire kindle. Thick bundles can be rather sturdy when fastened well enough.

[22 - Medicinal] Sage: An aromatic herb with an earthly flavor. Two types found in the valley will either have long stems topped with red flowers or are bushels of long, soft, grey-green leaves. They tend to grow in the Hidden Pass.
Benefits: When used topically, crushed and made into a paste (often with honey in the mix) before boiled (and then cooled), it can reduce redness and inflammation as well as healing skin infections. When crushed and digested, this plan can also help alleviate gas or bloating and treat gastrointestinal tract infections. Additionally, they are a natural anti-inflammatory and when digested, can help alleviate the pain caused by arthritis. Healers often warn against heavy use of this herb and advice an 'over time' approach.

Which was it again? Green leaves? Did he say soft or long? Both? Was it.... purple? Pink? No, definitely a gradient of yellow right?... "Ahhg whatever. This'll do."

In a huff, Hazel Lock moves to remove the plant from its place, nearly forgetting Sal's warning to do so with her jaws. Pausing long enough to contemplate 'ingestion' and 'accidental poisoning', she opts to extend a paw out instead, she proceeding to snap the plant in half before coaxing the flowering spike into her pouch.

    Character Name: Sundew Scion
    Hour Rolled: 4:00PM CST

Salvation had a good head on his shoulders, Sundew had thought. She was not close to his litter especially, though the twin seers had been cause for celebration and scrutiny alike. His plea was easily seen with her eyes, and the possibility of a ghastly future with her hidden ones. Rather than wait for him to approach, Sundew decided to act on her own initiative; she didn't want him getting needlessly nervous approaching the Speaker, after all.

Poisons and poisons again...Sundew carefully avoided the bishop's weed before locating the buckwheat soon after as she made her rounds. She didn't fear them for what they were: no plant had ideological or selfish desires and grew as they needed to be. But the Court had its own sordid history with the things...She wanted to believe their reintroduction would not hasten the old ways back.

tab While she respected the efforts of her pack's healers, Mink didn't associate with them as often as she should, honestly. Perhaps that's what swayed her final decision to accept Salvation's proposed quest. Well, that, or she just really wanted an excuse to do more exploring. Either way, she'd taken the satchel and bounded her way off into the thick line of trees.

tab The she wolf couldn't have been in the forest for longer than five minutes when she found her first plant. Now, she knew nothing of medicinal herbs but she did know that the pretty, ombréd flowers she'd come across were not used for healing. Still, it didn't change the fact they were pretty and in bloom, which didn't happen all too often. She couldn't help stopping to pick one. If anything, maybe she could thwart any kind of disapproving look Salvation may give her by presenting the pink blooms to him upon her return.

Sundew's father had let her wear them by her ears, saying the sunny colors befitted her name. She wondered what he would say of her now.

Here were no pups, sadly, though she tried not to offend the flower in thinking so.

Not far from the comfrey, however, Sundew noticed something amiss. She couldn't quite tell what the dried up plant used to be - perhaps a daffodil of some sort, the degrading was too far gone. Frowning slightly, the Speaker checked around to make sure there wasn't a blight of some sort before gently digging the dead plant out. Compost was a humble but necessary thing to be part of.

    Character Name: Chocolate Thunder
    Hour Rolled: 03:00 EST

Being approached was a big deal, Chocolate Thunder was very aware of this. He was a rogue born court dweller and wore that like a brand. Life wasn't tough, but he hadn't known a group of grown wolves to gossip like these wolves did.

Salvation came with a request and Chocolate was prepared to fulfill it no matter what it was. If it meant gaining further status within the Court he would do it bar something over the top. Assembling a suitable batch of herbs seemed productive, and valuable. He wasted no time in finding something either, his search began with discovering a piece of aloe vera - perfect.

    Character Name: Gossip Mink
    Hour Rolled: 6:00AM CST

Mink's next find seemed to happen much more quickly than her first. She hadn't taken two, maybe three, paw steps and a familiar scent hit her nose. Even with her scant knowledge of herbs, she knew mint when she smelled it. Jutting her nose to the ground, she sniffed out the small patch to her left.
She carefully took a bundle of the toothy leaves into her mouth and gently plucked them so she could deposit them in her satchel. Some of the smaller leaves nearly crumbled between her teeth but she saved most of it. Plus, now she had minty fresh breath!
