Name: Esai Stage: Stage 2 [Brawler/Guardian] Race: Yaeli Gender: Male Sexuality: Straight [Plotted] 3 Base Traits: Self-Denying // Observant // Careless // Kind Personality:Esai is the type of boy who will always put others before himself. He believes that he was born differently so that he could protect his mother and any others who are suffering from ill fortune. As a result he has never really understood what it is to put himself first and will do his best to be loyal and obedient to those that he cares about, especially his family. His family’s story and deep desire to bring happiness to others often has him placing his own needs in the background as he pushes himself forward for others despite any risk to himself. Everything is a regiment to him as he believes his role is to be a protector, someone who must work towards staying strong so that he can help whoever he can. As a result of his training, Esai focused on both his mind and body. His body was physically strong to help others while as he grew older he realized that it was just as important to have a keen awareness of the world around him. He grew more and more observant so that he could learn to better understand others and situations in order to help solve their problems.
Because of his strong beliefs he is extremely willing to put himself at risk if it will save another. This makes him a bit more careless at times, especially when he was raised under the assumption that his existence is a blessing from the gods so surely he must be more invincible than others. Despite his solid stature and darker appearance, Esai is simply kind at heart. It is his kindness that shines through the darkness of his gaze and that kindness which leads him to always wanting to help others without reserve.
History:
Brynae Vanderbit was a very unfortunate woman. She came from a line of textile merchants located in Illadin. Her family was well off, they earned plenty to put more than just a simple roof over their heads and food on the table, but when the new continent appeared her family became greedy to become the first to expand their trade. In their rush, Brynae’s father broke promises to friends and stole off in the middle of the night with a ship despite the superstitions at the time.
While he was gone Brynae and her mother were attacked by Extremists who had invaded the western coast of Yael where they once enjoyed spending time away from home. They had known about the changes to the area, the arrival of malicious creatures who did unimaginable things but her mother brushed off the rumors. Later others in the city whispered that the Vanderbit family was too rude and greedy. They were simply pushing their luck until the gods had enough and when Brynae’s mother ventured into Extremist territory her time had come. Brynae barely escaped while her mother was lost, her body tumbling from a cliff the last haunting image that Brynae remembers of her existence.
Brynae returned home and learned of more ill fortune. Her father’s ship was lost, the few brave Yaeli who had followed him gone to the deep waters. With a heavy heart young Brynae found herself taken in by her mother’s sister who unlike her parents was more typical of Yael with a deep belief in the gods and superstitions. Your parents simply were born too bold for this world of ours. Her Auntie would tell her often, a constant reminder that Brynae should learn to live a better life to appease the gods. Despite her Auntie’s warnings, Brynae's grief led to more reckless events, her depression creating more miserable choices.
A cursed existence. Many believed that the actions of Brynae’s parents had angered the gods and cursed the family. Brynae’s Aunt started to become desperate, her prayers to the Sanctum increasing. If only Dafiel and Lurin could forgive Brynae for her parent’s mistakes. However, while Brynae’s Aunt fervently prayed Brynae found herself devoid of hope. She had simply lost too much and had little faith in the gods’ forgiveness. They were cursed and would have to deal with the ill fortune. That was the last thing that she had yelled at her Aunt before the older Yaeli woman fell to illness leaving Brynae truly alone.
Then when all was lost came hope. Makas, a simple Yaeli hunter with a good heart, found himself enamoured by Brynae. There was just something about her, a haunting beauty with sorrowful eyes, that tugged at his soul. It took weeks but eventually he managed to win her heart and she opened up to him about her family’s curse. She feared that her cursed existence would never grant them happiness. Makas was persistent and believed deeply in the power of the Sanctum and the gods. Surely if they spoke with them and received a blessing the gods could forgive Brynae. Desperately in love, Brynae followed Makas and allowed a ceremony to take place both sealing their love and asking for the gods’ blessings. Like her Aunt who had passed on, Brynae found herself suddenly fervently praying for forgiveness so that she could have a good life with Makas. She did not deserve him but perhaps Lurin could convince Dafiel that pure love was worthwhile and that Brynae had suffered long enough for her family’s greed. She spent many days praying for forgiveness, following rituals given to her by a Priestess so that her life could start anew.
Marriage to Makas led to a blissful life. Brynae had a good husband and they found themselves blessed with a child shortly after consummating their love. Everything was at peace and she truly believed that Lurin had spared her. They would have simple lives away from the greed of her family’s legacy and start fresh in a smaller village away from the cities. Then came the birth of their son. At first horrified by his appearance, Makas and Brynae spun a tale that perhaps the gods had taken her curse but that there had been a residue within her body which had touched their child. Brynae was terrified that it meant her son would be cursed, that the ill fate would follow him but to her surprise it seemed that everything he did seemed to help others instead. Had the gods gifted her son to absorb the bad luck and instead turn it to good fortune? Perhaps his darker coloring was because he absorbed the curse from Brynae so that she could live a happier life. Tears fell from her eyes at the thought. Her poor child was both cursed and blessed at the same time.
Soon tales of the darker child spread through the smaller village. At first many feared he was cursed but as he started to grow many noticed the good that happened near him instead. Rumors bloomed that whoever visited the child had good fortune. The gods had given him the ability to fight against bad luck and so gifts upon gifts started finding themselves at Brynae’s door as villagers visited the special child. As he grew older many in the village found it easy to confess their woes to the gentle mannered apprentice. Esais’ gentle nature made it easy for others to like him and he grew up surrounded by his family’s love. When he was older he began to understand the rumors and learned enough of his mother’s history to start believing that the gods truly had blessed him so that he could keep the curse away. Feeling a sense of responsibility, he stayed dedicated to his loving mother and began training himself so that he could be healthy and strong enough to continue protecting her.
Description: Tall with broad shoulders, Esai has the appearance of a rather handsome warrior. What most notice first, however, is the darkness that clings to his features as a result of melanism. He usually wears leather leggings with a sash wrapped around his waist and doesn't often wear a top unless necessary as a result of the material getting in the way of his training. He also wears an amulet given to him from his mother as a reminder of his blessing.
Update: Esai has been pushed by his parents to leave his family's village and explore Yael, training in Pajore so that he can become a strong warrior should anyone need his aid.

✸Extra✸
Ever since his birth Esai has seemed destined to act like a guardian for his family. Melanism originally was considered a curse before showing as more of a blessing for him. At first his coloration made others wary of him before rumors started spreading that his darker skin is a result of his ability to absorb ill fate and turn it into good fortune for others. His birth is believed to be a result of Lurin having mercy on his mother and giving Esai the ability to ease Dafiel’s curse which had been placed upon her family as punishment for their greedy natures. It brought balance and a desire for the family to do good for others in order to make up for Brynae’s parents’ past wrongdoings. In fact, Esai was raised with the belief that it was his duty to bring happiness as to not waste Lurin’s kindness on his family. Both of his parents were known to be good people in the smaller countryside village and he quickly picked up on their habits so that he too could bring a smile to the faces of his neighbors.
As a child, Esai was a bit overwhelmed by the attention and was often shy and quiet in the presence of others. He began to accept his role more once he was older and considers it a blessing as he realized that he finds fulfillment through helping others. While he may not actually be a talisman, obviously something based more on superstitions and rumors than anything, the boy has developed good insight and is strong. While Lurin has blessed him he knows that with anything hard work is required to achieve the best results which is why he spent his childhood training his body and sharpening his mind. He patiently listens to problems and offers solutions which will help others and in turn they believe that his insight has indeed chased away their bad fortunes. It is almost like a placebo effect for some who visit him because simply touching his hand may make them feel better. For his mother and father, Esai’s existence is a blessing in the fact that he symbolizes the new life given to Brynae. Gifts rather than debt pile up at their doors whenever others visit now and Esai is a loving boy who does his best to please his family. Ironically his darkness has instead brought much light into his mother's previously distraught existence.
He works hard to become stronger so that he can physically protect others while also learning ways to sharpen his mind so that he can give advice. He believes that the gods truly have blessed him so that he can help others and he wishes to continue doing so as he grows older. However, it does put pressure on him because he does worry that many of his friends are simply there as a result of wanting to keep away bad luck. Still because he has a kind heart he is eager to please and while he reserves much of his inner thoughts to himself he is good at putting on a smile. Esai is simply too kind to avoid others when he could help them instead after all. Perhaps when he grows old enough and ventures forth he can find someone who does not know about his past and will instead embrace him for who he truly is and not see him as simply a talisman of good fortune.
Despite his dreams of exploring, Esai is devoted to his mother and will do his best to keep a smile on her face. Part of him worries that if he leaves it may allow bad luck to come back into his mother’s life but eventually he knows that he will have to face that fear. It is simply something that he will have to overcome and if anything does happen to his family he will return to face it with them. But for now he keeps pushing such thoughts aside, deciding day after day to just wait a bit longer before approaching the subject of travel with his family.
There was just something about being able to protect others that gave Esai motivation. He was not the type of person to go on the offensive unless absolutely necessary and he would rather risk himself than allow others to come to harm. Swords had intrigued him before and the words of a little one had tempted him to train with them but after a while he realized that he felt a bit too aggressive with them. It was easier to kill than to guard sometimes….right? Esai let out a sigh at the thought before staring back at the variety of gifts that were scattered about his family’s storeroom. His father had taught him hunting and he was decent with a bow but he didn’t feel like being a hunter suited his role in this world either. His mother had talked about healing but Esai was not patient enough nor blessed enough to simply wash disease away. He was afraid that if he took that path others would expect far too much considering his history and his heart would break to watch as others passed away into Lurin and Dafiel’s care. No, he couldn’t do any of those roles. A sigh left his lips before he noticed something awkwardly jutting out from the side of the pile. “A shield?” Some artisan had made it to decorate their walls but it was actually viable as a shield with patterns depicting the Lurin’s moon and metal edges to both protect others and if necessary harm any attackers. It was a perfect combination...Esai smiled as he picked up the shield and tried it out. Maybe, just maybe he could take up a path that would allow him to protect others in his own way after all. He would try this out and over the next few weeks see how becoming a guard would fit his future hopes and dreams.

✸Growth Solo✸
Sweat dotted his brow but Esai was not done practicing for the day. The Yaeli man just kept swinging at the dummy over and over, his wooden pole making a large cracking noise every time it connected with the misshapen thing. Eventually it gave out and a booming noise filled the hillside as the pole and dummy both snapped in half with the final blow. “Another one down, already?” An all too familiar voice chimed in and Esai turned to see his father sauntering towards him. The hunter was dressed casually and had a bow on his back as usual, but there was a bit of a rather thoughtful expression on his father’s face for once and Esai already felt his gut twisting in apprehension. Anyone else may not realize that there was a calculating mind behind those jokes and easy expressions but Esai knew better. His father was most definitely contemplating something and Esai worried that he was involved within those thoughts.
“Yeah.” Esai gave a nod towards the downed dummy while trying his best to ignore the worry knotting his gut. “I should make another.” Artistic skill wasn’t his speciality which was already making the dummies somewhat off putting and the hundreds of beatings that they received from the training warrior only made their appearances even worse. Not that Esai minded considering that their purpose was to help him fight and not gain some form of attraction from any potential passersby. Yet their ability to help him train was lessening by the day as he found himself running out of training ideas.
It was almost as if Makas could read his mind. “You know that I’ve already taught you everything that I know about hunting and fighting. Your mother taught you all that she knows about trade, cooking and medicines already as well.” The hunter began almost warily before running a hand through his tangle of curls. “This is a lovely but smaller village so there’s not any seasoned warriors here either…”
“Father…”
“Listen.” Makas held up a hand towards his son. “I don’t want you to leave and I know Brynae will be miserable for a few weeks even if she denies it, but at the same time we both want you to flourish. Do you really think the curse will come back just because you leave us? I think living here with you in our lives for the last eighteen years has been enough to get rid of any curse from your mother’s body.” His gaze softened as he reached a hand out to pat Esai’s shoulder. “I saw that you picked up the shield and are still working with swords and lances….we can’t offer you much in those skills but I can send you to the city towards someone that I do know.”
“That would mean leaving the village...for quite some time.” Esai replied softly with his gaze darting towards the ground. He had spent his whole life here and had always made certain to be by his mother’s side to protect her. What if leaving harmed her? But at the same time how could he continue protecting others if he didn’t grow stronger? He had been stubborn about leaving home for the past year but even Esai couldn't any longer ignore the fact that he needed a mentor to train him. A sigh left his lips as he slowly brought his gaze up towards his father. “You’ve been pushing me to do this for a while now, but how does mother feel?”
“I’ve spoken with her and you can feel free to speak with her some more.” Replied Makas quietly, his expression softening. “We both love your mother dearly and she feels the same. She wouldn’t want you to waste your life away here because you’re worried about us. I’ve caught up on hunting and am prepared to stay around the home for the next few weeks to be with her.” They had stored up enough for the colder seasons and Esai had even noticed how much extra preparations they had seemingly done in the last few weeks while his father left him hints and slight nudges about leaving home to travel. “I promise I’ll take care of things, Esai.” Makas smiled as he patted his son’s shoulder one more time and held out a letter towards him. “My friend lives in the capital and you can go stay there and train under him. He’ll have connections with other warriors to help further your training and it may be a few years before you can return home to us.”
“I…” Esai hesitated before finally taking the letter from his father. “I’ll discuss things with mother then.” He relented with a small sigh. It seemed that he couldn’t avoid this decision any longer and that soon he would be leaving home to go and find his own path. Eventually he would return and Esai made certain to promise that when he spoke with his mother later that night and started to prepare for his long journey from home.
After months of avoiding his father's idea that he leave to get training under seasoned warriors, Esai finally acknowledges that there's only so much that he can teach himself and that if he wants to grow stronger he needs to finally leave home.
