Set safely within the far back district within the whole of Arashigakure, the healing huts seem quaint, especially as a group of buildings separated along several points along a road behind a gated entryway, but they are no less impressive than the hospitals in any other shinobi world. Various different buildings lead to sometimes large and sometimes small underground complexes where the sick are healed and separated based on what is needed. A residency where those in recovery can do so in the face of the sun exists within the healing district. There is also an area dedicated to various different types of research and education effectively making this place Arashigakure's premier medical school, as it were.

The first thing Sonyo felt before she opened her eyes was an intense feeling of cotton mouth. Her eyes felt as if they were glued shut and her nose was beyond dry. The next thing that she noticed was the smell of antiseptic and cleaning supplies. She was in the hospital? Why- Kagerou had brought her here after she had passed out on the field. With how her body ached, it must have been days since she had fallen asleep. With a croaking groan, she pried her eyes slowly open, but they quickly snapped shut again at the brightness of the lights directly above her.

As her brain slowly begsn to wake up, the kunoichi felt a ping of guit. How many hours must Kagerou have wasted taking care of her? Hours the woman could have been using to take care of others, people in worse shape than her. She forced herself to pry her eyes open again, and this time she stared at the ceiling for a good sevond or so with narrowed eyes showing her aggravation at herself. Sonyo dragged her eyes away from the tiled ceiling to look around the room only to find that she wasn’t alone.

Lohner was there, sitting in a nearby chair, looking out the window. He had come to visit her? She searched her mind to find Shukaku and ask him if he had graced her mental plane at all but found the lump of sand snoozing away. She opened her mouth to speak but nothing happened. She closed her mouth and swallowed, then tried to speak again. She was more successful this time, and although her voice was quiet and crackled, it was audible amongst the faint background noise of the hospital. Lohner...” She spoke his name with a measure of happiness and relief, he was here... he could have left her here but he came...

Uzumaki Lohner
φ Fettered Soul φ Uzushiogakure φ
DotonSuiton ╫ Genin ╫

Lohner's eyes gazed out into the village of Arashigakure, the effects of his most recent awakening still bothered his mind and the question of how this nation lingered in the air haunted him. Thoughts of his conversation with the Arashikage and an earnest young Arashi-nin, how steadfast and solid their village was, even among the turmoil and war, though with an even-keeled leader like Toso, it was inevitable. His thoughts carried him further out, to the ruins of Uzushiogakure and the Ryuuichi cavern where he met the Snake, Ginda and her new contract, Zahara. The thoughts overwhelmed the young man.

A deep breath passed through his lungs and fogged the window, into which the Uzumaki drew a tree surrounded by some nonsensical glyphs. Then she stirred, unsure if she was awake or if she merely tossed continually in her sleep, he turned but said nothing. As her eyes fluttered he tried to reach out to the Ichibii, but the Raccoon slept even more fiercely than she had.

Her eyes closed again, his heart dropped in his chest. He had been relatively alone in the village during the past few days. The Jounin had kept tabs on him, and a man in sharp militaristic clothing had shown him to a temporary home. But in the meantime he had been alone with his thoughts. He had chosen to stay in Arashi for a time, Uzushio, his family, aside from his sister Nanami, all had been lost to him.

She spoke, a single word sliced his inner thoughts like the sun cuts the night.

"Rue, the desert rose." He said through a quickly adopted smile, his eyes focus reeled back in from somewhere in the distance.

He pushed a kettle of tea towards her then lifted it to pour her a cup.

"The war is over... You've been down almost a week." He sighed, his face more sunken than before, new lines, reminiscent of his Sennin marks perched across his chin and along the bottom of his jaw.

Sonyo’s eyes went wide, she had been out for a whole week? How many people had died in that time frane that she could have saved? How many lives, families, couples had been ripped to shreds. Once again she hadn’t been able to help... and even more worse was the look on Lohner’s face. Something about him seemed to have aged, in only the way that trauma can age you. She knew the look well, she had worn that same look. It was obe of exhaustion, confusion, mental termoil. Her heart broke at the thought that Lohner had gone through some sort if emotional trauma and she hadn’t been there to help...

”Oh Loh...” She mumbled, her guilt and sadness clear in her voice. She was too tired, to weak for the walls that usually stood tall in her mind. The tea was neglected in favor of weakly reaching out and taking the Uzumaki’s hand and squeezing it. ”I’m... I-I’m so sorry... You look like you’ve been through hell... a-and I disappeared so suddenly...” She hoped that he hadn’t thought she had left him, too. The feeling of loaing everyone you cared about... once again that telltale lump of heldback tears burned in her throat. The look she held on her face was a vulnerable one, much like the version of her in her mental plane.

She locked eyes with his, her hazel-brown ones searching his for any sign that Kagerou had broken her promise and told him. She wouldnt have blamed her, in this case kagerou was the doctor and Sonyo the patient, but she didn’t want him to see her as someone... fragile, easily broken.

Uzumaki Lohner
φ Fettered Soul φ Uzushiogakure φ
DotonSuiton ╫ Genin ╫

"You're not at fault for any of this, I was actually surprised to find you has come here. But having any friends in an alien country is a comfort." Lohner responded as Rue took his hand and apologized like always.

"I see the trash-panda couldn't keep you out of trouble, or from over exerting yourself. No surprise there, he still hasn't grown balls enough to be called a Tanuki, has he? The Uzumaki deflected, his free hand moved to settle on top of Rue's and his eyes matched hers for the intensity of their stare.

His eyes had changed colour, from auburn as his hair to a viridian green, while only traces of the auburn remained at the core. The bushiness of his hair seemed to have tamed, though it may have been the difference of environment, and the sensation of his chakra had grown more intense. The battlefield and recent events left an indelible effect on the boy-turned-man. Yet, beneath all of it remained the sensation of a man who cared, the scent of autumn leaves, and the same, albeit stronger, aura of being.

"Though, I'm no better. I wasn't there for you either. Or for them."

Relief washed over her, no he hadn't been told. She hoped he would never find out about how tattered her mind truly was. Even now, as he was looking at her, voices whispered in her head that it was all an act. That there was no way that Lohner cared about her well being, that he was just being nice to be polite. The thought of that being true hurt her deep, but she tried to remind herself that wasn't the case. Taking her hand out of Lohner's, Sonyo struggled to sit up as all her muscles protest from not being used. "No reason to apologize, I'm quite used to it just being me."

Finally pulling herself in to a sitting position, she groaned and placed a hand against her face. How was she still so damn tired? Her dark hair fell in sheets around her face, her pin having been removed by the orderlies when she was placed in bed. It took a while, but the memories of the battle came back and Sonyo sighed, closing her eyes. She felt irritation at herself bubble under her skin, answers had been within her grasp...

"Well, whether it was your fault or mine in the past, none of what happened in the last few days belonged to either of us. Though it feels like I only turn up in places to wreak havoc and destruction." Lohner sighed, his eyes traced her as she removed her hand from his and worked herself up in the bed.

The muscle complaint from being incapacitated for some time was something all too familiar to the young man and he reminisced for a moment on the fact, before his mind returned to the moment at hand. His fingers brushed hair back from his face and rested along the lines formed at his jaw and as he moved his hand along them, the lines flexed gently, the transformation had given him a slight deformation in the process, reminiscent of soft bark on a tree. Another mark of the war on them all.

"What's your plan after all of this..? I... I can't go back to Uzushio... No, I guess they call it Konohagakure now." He griped, eyes turned back towards the window and the emblem he had drawn.

Sonyo could agree with how Lohner felt, she felt too that destruction followed her wherever she went. Wherever she ended up, war followed quickly. First Suna, then Uzu, then Arashi... She swallowed hard, then turned to take a good look at Lohner. She frowned softly, carefully moving to the end of the bed as to not pull anything from misuse. Once there, she grabbed Lohner's face in her hands and turned it to one side, taking a better look at the new lines that covered his face. Perhaps she was seeing things but... they looked like bark. Worry filled her eyes and she turned the young man's face to the other side to examine it as well. "Oh Lohner, what happened to you out there?"

She could feel the nature chakra just under the skin, was this some side effect from the sage mode she had seen him take before? But when Nari went in to his sage mode, nothing like this had happened to him. Was it possible that... nature chakra corrupted and misformed things it touched when uncontrolled? Was the power of the Mother really potentially that horrible? Her lips set in to a hard line, almost a frown, and her eyebrows gathered together. "Does it hurt? Would you like me to try and fix it?" She didn't want to push her healing ability on him, if he didn't mind the look then she wouldn't bother him with trying to fix something that wasn't broken.

Sonyo's hand, which was holding his chin to keep his head turned, trembled softly. Was it from weakness? From emotion? Not even she knew, all she knew was that she couldn't make it stop, no matter how subtle it was. Even if he didn't want to get rid of these bark like growths on his skin, if it hurt, she would find some way to ease the pain without getting rid of them. War had many mental impacts, some people just aren't able to go back to the way they were before. She dodged Lohner's question for the time being to focus on his health and well being, she honestly didn't know the answer. Belamos was going to create his own place to settle down, to retire, to be at peace. She wanted that too, but she was never one to stay in one place for long... She wanted to continue to travel, to help others, to be the Mother's Emissary...

"I fought, I killed, I devoured men and unnatural creatures in the name of protecting those I cared about. Though... As I fought the malingering feeling of death washed over me. Not mine or those I killed, but I felt my family fade. I can only feel the footsteps of Nanami and my brother now. Everyone else stopped walking beside me. It's quiet..." He cried as the sound of leaves blown in the wind filled the room.

"I just wanted to have a home, and friends. I wanted to be strong for them, and for someone like you, Rue. But I can't hear my footsteps anymore either. Just my heartbeat and the leaves..." The sound of blown wood resounded in the room and fabric tore as Lohner's Senjutsu began to spiral and he formed a living tree in the room with Sonyo, forever locked within.

"I just wanted you to know, I think I finally found love."

Silence was the only thing that filled the room for a long time after Lohner’s confession. Sonyo’s hands, which were once trembling were worryingly still now as they laid gently on the bark thar now made up the tree in front of her. It strained at the confines of the room, but was as gorgeous as the person it had been born from. The young woman’s face was blank, whether from shock or from a vain effort to not feel the rising emotions bubbling under her skin, it stayed that way for several moments.

But her tears betrayed her as she sat there, frozen. They rolled down her cheeks and splattered on to her hakama one by one. The shock started to wear off, her hands starting to tremble faintly once more.

There was bustling outside, Lohner’s roots had broken through the ceiling in to the room below her. In her disturbed state, she could faintly hear doctors calling for containment and removal protocol— the thought of ANYONE touching Lohner shot white hot anger through her system. This was usually where Shukaku would chime in, but even the tanuki was eerily quiet. Perhaps he was mourning Lohner’s loss, too. Faster than the approaching doctors could react, the entire room was sealed in thick ice. Prevented from entering, annoyed calls were made to psych to attempt a peaceful removal before more forceful methods were used.

The page to Kagerou would only hold minimal details. “911 Consult - Shinobi has sealed themselves in to a room, poses a danger to themselves and others. Report ASAP.”

Now that the voices outside were silenced by a shield of ice as thick as the doorframe, Sonyo finally cracked. A soft sob escaped her lips as her fingers carefully trailed along the rough surface of the tree.

He was gone. Lohner was gone. Like Nari, like Kya, like Theo, he was GONE. Never again would she feel that relaxing calm he brought, never again could she see the world through his unique eyes.

They never got to make that garden.

All the emotions came at once; the anger, the self-hatred, the sadness. They buried her, her sobbing becoming so hard that it made no noise as she carefully placed her forehead against the trunk of the tree. Was evergreen mocking her?! How could she do this to her again?! How could she take away another person she loved!! Sonyo’s hands gripped at bark, knuckles turning white. She couldnt do it again! She couldn’t go through this grief! Would his voice join the others quietly mocking all her failures from the back of her mind?

Sonyo didnt think she’d be able to take that.

Her now hysterical sobs could be heard even outside of the thick ice blockade. The jinchuriki’s trashed emotional state made her hyouton chakra unstable; on top of the temperature inside, and just outside the room dropping to arctic temperature, Sonyo’s ice began a slow advance in to the neighboring rooms and hall.

“No. No Lohhhh... dont leave me... please, not you too...” Sonyo sobbed hard in to the tree, tears splattering on to the rough surface. “You deserved so much better... You... Y-You...” The jinchuriki choked on her tears, launching in to a coughing spell. She felt dizzy, the edges of her vision danced red and black. “I could have saved you... I could have... I could...”

User ImageWhat Kagerou was doing or where she was when she received the page didn't matter. It was all the same, regardless. Within minutes, she was at the scene, silently wishing she could have come faster, but there was no time to dawdle with such needless concerns.

Her voice like a breeze and her smile resting calmly on her face she approached the ice cage and faced it alone. All personnel and patients nearby had already been evacuated, crammed into space that didn't exist, but they made do somehow. Exactly when she had managed to change into winter clothes was a mystery, but one could assume it was on the way with her sealing jutsu. Here, at the edge of the icy borders, she could see the damage that was done, and by chance, she happened to come from the floor below, where she passed by the roots that penetrated the floor above. The situation appeared as severe as it could get, but keeping a cool head was Kagerou's forte.

In reality, behind that smile, her heart hurt for Sonyo. It pained with the cold that, despite the warm layers she had come covered in, pierced deep within her. Earlier, she had cast a sensory technique to determine what her eyes couldn't see, and whatever pain it was that Sonyo felt, it was so palpable that Kagerou could feel the emotions within the freezing chakra she emitted. Ice cold, solitude. Loneliness, but she had been the one to create this cage for herself. Kagerou raised a hand and placed it upon the ice wall, feeling the chill through her glove. To wish away solitude so much as to enforce isolation.

However, Kagerou hadn't left Sonyo alone. Lohner should have been with her, and she had felt his chakra within the room... However, it wasn't right... Did she... Could she have... But in a hospital?... Kagerou's hand clenched as she felt the pain within her own heart as she predicted Lohner's conclusion. Only a few minutes before the emergency alert, she had gotten the message that the sensors indicated Sonyo had finally awoken. For this to be the first thing to happen... No, she shouldn't jump to conclusions. She should remain at that question. What had happened in there?

"Sonyo," Kagerou called out finally, when she saw the ice first start to creep over even more of the floor. At first, a whisper, and then louder, as a shout, "Sonyo! Let me in! Please!".

Sonyo's head jerked up at the sound of Kagerou, it spun to the door to look at her friend through the ice. Her eyes were red, puffy; full of anger and pain and sadness. She didn't understand why this kept happening-- other than Kagerou she lost everyone, and the other medic was probably only spared by the fact they barely saw each other.

Nari had died, Theo had gone missing, Masa had left for another continent, Ivilace was gone, Kya turned to ash, her friends from Suna had their own lives and had left her.. Belamos... Belamos was most likely a mistake, made in a flash by a man who knew they could die the next day. She knew there was a good chance she wouldn't see him again.

The shrine maiden sniffled, looking up in to Lohner's branches... She wanted him back. Gently her hands caressed the bark of the tree as a choked back sob escaped her; her body read like an animal ready to strike. But still the ice opened for Kagerou, but only for her. Would anyone else try to approach the ice would snap shut and would explode outwards with ice spikes.

When Kagerou would enter, Sonyo wouldn't say anything. The woman would just turn back to the tree, her eyes searching it with sharp feverish movement. The wheels in her head were spinning, spitting out everything she had ever read about sage chakra. Her hands lightly roamed the tree's surface, as if looking for a magical button to turn Lohner back.

She would fix this. She wouldn't let someone else turn to nothing because of her inability to be a proper medic.

User ImageIt was only Kagerou who entered. Everyone else had since been sent away. She approached, quietly. With her bells silenced, she made no sound moving. She did not say anything, either. Simply stood there, for a good moment, in quiet observance of the mourning Sonyo and the tree that she cried over... For?

Then where was Lohner? Still without a single sound, with a twist of her hand, Kagerou cast a sensory technique to confirm if her guess was true. Her mind reached out, brushed against the chakra in the air: Sonyo's icy cold grief that enclosed the space in a desperate embrace and Lohner's deathly still peace that emanated quietly from the tree, distorted in a way Kagerou had never felt before but recognizable nonetheless as what used to be the chakra signature of the man she briefly left Sonyo in the care of.

A cure, of course, must be found. Kagerou knelt besides Sonyo, whose hands roamed feverishly around the tree in a never ending search for answers. She understood the feeling. Even if the mind could think of nothing to do, doing anything helped ease the pain, if only a little bit. However, now was not the time to be searching for a cure. Gently, bearing the cold, Kagerou's clothes-swaddled arms reached around her friend and pulled her into a hug. Before Sonyo delved too far into her despair, Kagerou felt like she had to distract her, pull her back while she still could. Gently, if the hug was accepted, fingers threaded through the silky hair of the hyouton user.

Sonyo was a far better doctor than Kagerou, and right now, only Sonyo knew what really happened. Kagerou was still going off of a few seconds worth of analyses. However, in those few seconds, she had already deduced that whatever she sensed in Lohner's chakra was nothing she had ever sensed before, and she had worked with nature chakra in the past. She'd sensed it, analyzed it, even learned how to heal the petrification that came with it when things went wrong. From that experience, she knew already that simply using Great Spiritual Cleansing [ Subarashī Supirichuarukurenjingu ] would not resolve this issue. It might be a good start, but inevitably, more research would be needed.

In short, this would not be a problem resolved in just an afternoon. However, even before anything could move forwards with this problem, Kagerou needed to help Sonyo first. She wouldn't be able to bear seeing her friend like this for long. Lohner was important, yes, as a patient and as Sonyo's friend, but to Kagerou personally, he couldn't compare to Sonyo, especially because it was Sonyo. No doubt, Sonyo was thinking of Lohner first. She always thought of others before her, which was why more than most people Kagerou knew, Sonyo needed someone to think of her first. In a gentle voice, a soothing whisper besides Sonyo's ear, Kagerou asked with a face somber with her friend's pain, "Sonyo, tell me, what happened?".

Sonyo welcomed the hug, burying herself in to her friend. Hands tightly gripped the thick fabric of Kagerou's coat, as if the were her lifeline. The uchiha's question echoes around in her head like the empty cave it was. The tears had stopped now, but so had her thoughts. It took her a moment to pry her lips apart to finally respond, but her voice was only a low mumble. "Senjutsu corruption, I think. Or Petrification... Something to do with how Senju bodies react versus everyone else... I couldn't stop it.. If only I had woken up sooner..."

Slowly the room began to warm again, Sonyo's mind exhausting itself. Ice began to recede, and Kagerou would be able to feel her face again but Sonyo was a different story. It was like hugging an hunk of ice, Sonyo was internalizing the cold now. That's all that was left now, the arctic cold and sorrow.

User Image"You couldn't have known, Sonyo. You saved so many lives and then fell ill from exhaustion. This isn't your fault," Kagerou soothed as she rubbed the yuki onna's back. The room was thawing, but the most important part of it, the most important person in here, remained as cold as ice. In distress, the calmer medical nin closed her eyes. She knew that her earlier sentence wouldn't have an effect. No matter how many doctors were out there, Sonyo would still blame herself for not having been there. Then, even if she had awoken earlier and knew about this condition earlier, she would have blamed herself for not succeeding.

She tried another angle. "He's alive, have hope," Kagerou peeled herself off of Sonyo so that she could get a good look into her eyes. With one hand, she gently stroked her cheek, thumb tracing the outline of her red eyes, "I can feel it. His chakra is warped, but a semblance of it still exists." With the rhythmic motion, her bells rang and imparted strength to Sonyo, a physical boost as well replenishment of her energy.

Calmly, ever so slightly, a smile spread across Kagerou's face. A smile for strength and a smile of support. Steady as a pillar, she would remain. "Cry as much as you want, Sonyo, I'll be here for you," Kagerou gently pressed her forehead onto Sonyo's, green hair mingling with brown. However, not all was lost, and this is what Kagerou tried to focus Sonyo's mind on with suggestions on how to move forward, "Then, whenever you're ready, I'll help you move Lohner. The hospital floor is hardly nourishing for trees, and you will need privacy to research his condition. I'll be right besides you, so whatever you do, don't give up hope." She could feel the cold, stabbing through her layers of thick clothes. Nevertheless, she didn't mind. She would be here for Sonyo.

The words Kagerou spoke were not empty words, either. They were not simply meant to revitalize Sonyo's warmth. No, she truly meant them from the bottom of her heart.

True, Kagerou did fear that if Sonyo did not have hope, believed Lohner lost forever, then she would remain cold until the day she died. Lohner would return to haunt her, like so much of her past had. He would haunt her, like the still-lodged head of a tick snapped away, but this head would simply grow bigger and bigger with time. Neither necessity nor rational arguments would be able to fend off her inner demons.

However, she also truly believed that Lohner could be saved. She believed and she calculated. There was nothing to lose in trying, except perhaps weeks, if not months, of sleepless nights until Sonyo finally settled into a healthy research schedule. However, that was tame. It wasn't like Sonyo would be risking another's life by studying Lohner's condition.
