Quote:
Webs have begun to appear all over Destiny City at an alarming pace; at first it doesn’t seem like anything to be concerned with—at first. Maybe a web over a window or door frame is the worst you see, but there have been reports of webs that cover a whole tree or even entire cars. The media cites changing weather patterns and, even though you don’t see any spiders, it’s clear you might have a problem.

Kit didn't care much for drinking and it had nothing to do with the fact that he was underage. As a college student, he knew there were plenty of ways to get alcohol if he so desired, but the stuff did nothing for him and he didn't fancy the idea of getting drunk to lose his wits or wake up with a hangover and gaps in his memory. His inhibitions were pretty low to begin with, however, so he felt he could blend in well enough on the bar scene. Being 6'3" didn't hurt, either, since people didn't generally think to ask his age or avoid him if he fancied striking up a conversation.

Even if he wasn't all that interested in getting intoxicated, the older teen enjoyed hanging out at the bar in order to meet the others and learn their stories. When he wasn't talking to them, he took pleasure in studying them as drawing subjects and frequently took his sketchbook along for that purpose. In other places such as the library, beach, and parks, people tended to find Kit creepy for staring. At the bar, however, his potential drawing subjects were often too drunk to notice or care and in some instances, they even relished the attention.

As of late, however, Kit noticed something strange in his observations. More and more webbing had been discovered all around the city. After the incident regarding the spiders and such at the botanical gardens, he had to wonder if whomever or whatever had orchestrated that was also responsible for the numerous works of unappreciated art turning up everywhere. It was just as likely, though, that there was a different perpetrator or group altogether because no one had seen the webs being spun or distributed.

He considered this as he sketched one such web that clung to the corner of a window of the establishment, penciling in the contours and considering what distinguished it from a fake web or a normal spider web. The pattern, texture, and way it was attached to the window marked it as real, but it seemed thicker and more conspicuous than a natural one meant to trap insects. Kit wondered if the bar owner had attempted to remove it or left it up for some other reason. Perhaps he'd been too lazy or thought it worked well as a piece of Halloween decor.

The sketch was soon completed. Still lifes didn't give Kit the same satisfaction that drawing living, moving subjects did, however, so he flipped to a new, clean sheet in his sketchbook and turned in his seat at the bar counter to regard his surroundings better. Now there's a charming young woman, he thought, his gaze falling upon a red-haired lady with eyes a delicate tint of blue. I wonder what her story is.

"Excuse me," he said, setting his sketchbook in his lap a moment. "but are you alone here tonight?"

Sinc ethe spider event, Gwen was not at all pleased to see the city begin to be overtaken by the webby material. She was on constant guard when on patrol, or even just out as a pedestrian. It was tiring. Her body was consistently tense, muscles ready to pounce at anything that might spring out at her which resulted in some rather close calls with strangers taking her by surprise. It was, needless to say, not an ideal situation and it was taking its toll on the red-head.

Not to mention her normal day-to-day anxieties had begun to crank up. Her mind raced with 'what-ifs' and the occasional 'I am not good enough'. It was so wearisome to deal with. Especially when her brain seemed unwanting to stop and only being completely involved with projects at work or working out seemed to keep her mind occupied enough. Even patrols were becoming a bit hard to stay focused on when she wasn't on the hunt for a negaverse agent or youma.

So, in an effort to perhaps calm her nerves, Gwen opted to visit a local bar. The place wasn't the best of quality, but it certainly wasn't a s**t hole in the wall either where you worried what you were actually being served. No, this place was clean, the bar itself had no sticky residue on it which said that it was at least taken care of. The bartender had even given Gwen a coaster to set her rum and coke on so the condensation from the drink didn't create a puddle. A place like this was somewhere Gwen figured she'd be safe. It looked as if many of the people there were regulars. Men stopping for a drink after work, a few women out together for a girl's night. Really, it was not terribly busy, but busy enough that she could loose herself people watching and sipping on her alcohol.

Legs crossed, she lounged against the back of her bar stool. Grey skinny jeans, black heeled booties, a blue V-neck sweater and a mustard scarf was the main pieces of her wardrobe. Flashes of silver could be spotted on her ears and fingers, denoting some pieces of jewelry but nothing gaudy in taste.

Gwen just wanted to relax, let the alcohol do its job, and then head home. That was the plan.

Sometimes other people just didn't get the memo.

Blue eyes turned to the young man who addressed her. Immediately she could feel the rising anxious feelings boil in her chest and stomach. Still, she offered him a smile, if wary. "I am." She said carefully. "I am not waiting for anyone either. Just enjoying some me time."

Would the guy get the hint?

Kit himself was dressed in his winter garb that consisted mostly of browns, blacks, and taupes, though his fingerless gloves still revealed silver-painted nails and the combined darkness of his natural features with his lack of colorful clothing brought out the saturation of his bright blue face tattoos and his right contact lens all the more. His discarded beanie lay on the counter alongside his beverage.

The college student watched her with a casual demeanor, his own easy-going grin the default of his face. "I see. Well, in that case, I'm sorry to disturb you. I just had a quick favor to ask." He leaned forward, lifting the sketchbook in one hand. "Do you mind if I use you as a model?"

Sneering at his drawing pad, he explained, "Normally I don't bother asking because I like sketching people when they're in their most natural state. Sometimes an individual intrigues me, though, and I feel compelled to ask them more about themselves to get a better feel of the story behind their being here as I draw to incorporate that knowledge and the feelings behind them into the drawing."

He gestured vaguely at their surroundings and then laughed. "One time I was having a chat with this fascinating fellow who had only one arm, but it didn't last long before he used that arm to throw his drink in my face." The older teen chuckled softly at the recollection. "Since then, I've gathered it's probably better to make sure the inspiration for my sketch doesn't object to being a subject in the first place."

Not that he believed that man had drenched him merely because he'd chosen him to draw. Kit knew it had more likely been his words to said man that had caused such an upset, but the lady probably wasn't interested in the details.

Apparently, no. No, he wouldn’t get the hint. Great. I would find myself a pushy young college kid who can’t take a hint. Mentally she sighed as she kept a neutral resting b***h-face exterior. Truthfully, she would have been much more content if he had just used her as a model without her knowing. Now this whole time she’d feel awkward and uncomfortable if she yes but also bad for not trying to encourage a fellow artist.

A brow rose. “I don’t suppose this fellow you mentioned would be named Isaiah, would it?” How many one-armed fellows could there be who would throw a drink in someone’s face? Gwen couldn’t imagine many nor likely two of them in the same city. But, there were bigger surprises to be had she supposed.

“Look, I don’t care if you use me as a model but as a tip from one artist to another, it’s better if you just don’t ask and do. Especially if it’s something that is harmless and just for personal use and practice. It’s very rare you’ll find someone like the guy who threw his drink at you.” Though it was a bit odd that Isaiah would do such a thing, assuming it was him of course, because he was used as a model. Hell, Gwen knew very well how much the man enjoyed being the topic of a piece of art. He riddled many a page in her own sketchbook.

Taking another sip of her drink, Gwen enjoyed the taste of the coke and rum. Another one or two of the drinks and she’d be at a point where even this young man wasn’t going to bother her. Mentally she wondered how fast she could down them without looking like an alcoholic? It wasn’t often she indulged but appearances had to be kept up. Unless if I start downing them and he leaves because of it. Now that was a tempting thought. She’d get to her desired state of fuzzy contentness and be rid of her pushy companion.

Tipping the glass back she finished the last of her drink, placing the glass at the edge of the bar as a signal for another.

While Kit had enough experience with people that he could have taken the hint, the fact of the matter was that he hadn't wanted to. He was much more interested in finding out just how willing the young woman was to tolerate him and his attempts to engage her in conversation before she had had enough. If she sincerely wanted to be rid of him, she was going to have to try harder than that. Getting to know other people was one of Kit's favorite hobbies as it helped stave off his natural inclination toward loneliness.

The teen's brows rose when the lady inquired about the name of the man he'd mentioned. "Isaiah?" he repeated before laughing aloud. "You know, it very well could have been. He didn't see fit to tell me his name, though I guess I can't really blame him."

He beamed at his new conversation partner as he picked up his pencil and began to sketch as she spoke. "You draw people, too?" the young man inquired, sounding delighted. "That's fantastic. You wouldn't happen to have any of your work with you, would you?" Glancing up from his paper, he added, "My name's Kit, by the way. Pleasure to meet you."

Back and forth between the paper and the woman his gaze travelled as he penciled in the contours of her facial structure. Upon hearing her input regarding asking people, he laughed lightly. "Thanks, angel face; I appreciate the advice. But for someone like me, that sort of encounter isn't all that rare. In fact, I've gotten everything from a dirty look to a thorough beating, so I'm pretty used to dealing with adverse reactions."

Sneering, he continued, "Besides, I'm damned if I ask and damned if I don't. Being male, people tend to get the wrong idea if they catch me eyeing them without knowing what I'm up to." He paused, tapping the end of his pencil to his chin as he studied the shape of his model's lips. "I don't suppose you run into that sort of misconception, do you?"

As he got to work on attempting to draw in more definition for his subject's features, he heaved a sigh, his smile turning sheepish. "I'll admit there's more to it than that, though. You may have noticed, but I tend keep bad habits. Disregarding the use of tact, for example, or ignoring the concept of personal space. One or more of those habits of mine may have been the real cause for that man's – Isaiah's? - behavior toward me. I was admiring what was left of his arm and teasing him a bit, but needless to say, he didn't take it too well."

Kit offered a brief shrug. "Never said I don't deserve the punishment I get. But what about you?" He nodded toward her empty drink. "Are those good, or are you just trying to numb yourself?"

Yep. It could have been him. How funny it would be if it was. What were the odds of it all? Gwen's gaze shifted to the bartender who returned to take her glass and refill it. Ice. One shot. Two shots. and a half. I need to give her an extra tip. The coke was added to the glass before the whole thing was stirred and given back to Gwen who took it and sipped from it appreciatively.

"I prefer landscapes." She said matter-of-factly over her glass. "But, yes, I do draw people too. And no, I didn't bring it with me tonight. I didn't have an interest in anything possibly getting spilled on it, or it sitting on a sticky bar top." Which really wasn't fair to say considering the bar top was kept quite clean and sticky free. The bartender did her job thoroughly in keeping her patrons happy.

"Gwen." She offered as she sat her glass back down on its coaster on the bar.

Angel face? A brow rose in disbelief. What the hell was this kid up to? She shifted in her seat, a hand resting on the bar as nails drummed on the lacquered wooden bar top. She was not amused at all.

"Not typically no. But I tend to be as obvious as I can that I am drawing something or them." She paused, bit her bottom lip before adjusting her position in her chair to lean forward a bit towards Kit.

"So you have horrible manners is what you're saying, know this, and yet still push boundaries that you know you shouldn't. Why? Why do s**t like that? Why piss people off? What's so great about it? You must get something out of it?"

Eyes flicked to the now refilled glass and she shrugged and leaned back. "That's really none of your business." To prove her point she grabbed the glass in question and took another swig from it. The bubbles of the soda made her cringe slightly as they tickled her nose. "But, yes, it's to numb and sleep tonight. Sometimes, when you're an adult, s**t gets to you and you need a little help to relax."

"I see. Why landscapes?" he wanted to know, filling in a few shadows on his sketch. "Pleasure to meet you, Gwen." As his gaze was constantly shifting between his drawing and Gwen's face, it made it difficult to determine whether or not he noticed her reaction to his little nickname prior to her revealing her real one. His grin seemed fixed on his face with only slight alterations every so often.

"Ah. That sounds like a good practice," Kit commented, darkening some of his lines. But as he watched the woman alter her pose and lean toward him, he paused. His cheek muscles, taut from perpetual smiling, gradually slackened as his expression mellowed somewhat. Mismatched eyes regarded her intensely for a few long moments before the tattooed face returned its focus to its work.

"...For someone claiming to have just wanted to enjoy some 'me' time, that's a lot of questions to ask a new acquaintance," he chuckled weakly. It was a minute or two more before he continued.

"I have a hard time making connections with people," the teen confessed at last. "Emotional bonds. I end up feeling lonely because I can't connect with people as deeply as most others seem capable of. So...I end up trying to foster strong connections with others any way I can."

He raised his pencil to briefly gesture with it. "Of course, the quickest and easiest way to emotionally connect with someone is by eliciting negative reactions. Sure, they might not end up thinking well of me, but at least they think something of me. It gives me hope that if someone feels some emotion strongly enough toward me, whatever emotion it is, they might someday be able to evoke emotions just as strong from me in response. Maybe it's weird, but it's all I can think to do."

Shrugging, he went on to elaborate a bit more. "Another reason I act like I do is that the only way it seems like I can feel is physically. So to make up for what I lack in emotional feelings, I relish every physical feeling I can get. For me, pain is as welcome as pleasure, whether it's a full-on hug or a punch to the guts.

"It's also easier to learn more about people when they're angry because they're more honest. It's then they're not afraid of letting you know exactly what they think." He looked up to beam at Gwen once more with the full radiance of his smile. "And I know it's none of my business. But thank you for answering just the same."

Kit went back to his sketch. He was on the final touches, now; erasing highlights and darkening more important details. "Heheh...there is actually one sensation I'm not fond of, and that's getting wet. That friend of yours, Isaiah, probably didn't know that, but he managed to get me with it anyway. Twice, even, because first I was soaked with his tequila and then a second time when I had to wash it out of my hair, face, and eyes. Won't deny that I deserved it, but I just found the irony amusing."
