The above ground floors of the base are mostly office space for a cadre of Dragon's Teeth officers, government workers, and other staff. There's numerous cubicles on every floor, as well as several conference rooms, and the local directors office.

Ethan Weber, aka Hunstman sat alone in a conference room situated in the upper levels of New Brockton's Wardens HQ. He called for both Esper and Jacket as this would be a good case for the two of them. According to the files the police had sent over they suspected a parahuman involvement in the snatching of recent victim. Obviously the idea that the victim had been murdered was now pretty high on their list. The files for the case sat on the table in a neat stack as Hunstman had already read through the details. When his two wards arrived, he go over the details and what evidence they currently had.

INDENT Esper had pulled on his uniform and mask before meeting up with Huntsman. He was easy enough to locate in the building. Esper approached, and gave the man a bit of a salute. "Ready and waiting for the briefing, sir." Esper had taken to being militaristic, even in his uniform. No reason other than to just be that way. Had he gotten different powers, he may have mad a joke on Miss Militia's name and gone Mister Medieval. Alas, he didn't have the chance, as his powers fit better with the identity Esper. It didn't matter, the pair still had to wait for Jacket to appear, despite her not taking classes.

"I'm glad you could make it here so soon Esper. Jacket should be along shortly, she's waiting on a replacement for the coms I think." He slid the folder in front of him towards the boy. "Brace yourself Eli, it's not pretty. The word choice of Eli rather than Esper was probably meant to help let the kid know that he really meant it when he said it wasn't pretty. Inside the folder were first pictures of a teen girl laying in the muddy pit of a grave, her body illuminated by crime scene flood lights. Her pants and panties were down around her knees, her hair was matted with mud, and her mid section was covered in blood despite the rain. Lifeless silver eyes stared skyward. The legs were bent at odd incorrect angles. After pictures of her body at the scene were close ups of where the pit walls had collapsed inward, evidence of her struggle to climb out of it. After that were pictures of footprints, most had been distorted by the rain but they'd still been able to mask casts of the foot prints. There were also photos from the morgue, the girl lay naked on top of an examination table. A single gunshot wound had penetrated her abdomen and after ripping through her organs and the stomach, had lodged within her spinal column. Among the other pieces of evidence were small cuts within the vaginal canal, some skin cell samples, and a pair of keys. In addition to that more recent documents showing signs of haste marked down the disappearance of the body, and a strange phenomenon on their security footage. Stills from the tapes showed a large mass of static distortion on the camera. Their evidence of parahuman involvement.

Perhaps it was all a bit much to show Eli given how young he was, but Ethan hoped that it might give them some kind of lead. With any sort of luck the boy might have seen this girl around his school before. If they could find out who she was then the case might actually go somewhere. They could could contact her parents, pull her phone records, possibly locate her car. It would absolutely open up the investigation, and just maybe they could figure out how exactly a parahuman became involved, and why they took the body.

•••▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬•••

INDENT Huntsman had always been hard to read for Esper. The older man had very good control over his emotions and kept them level. Either that or he was an entity with a singular emotional track: work. Still, Esper knew that the moment he said Eli, he was both being compassionate and attempted to prepare Esper for what he was about to see. Then the picture was laid before him, and Eli had to look away, for a number of reasons. "Tara Zirnitra, adopted daughter of Hiroshi and Yukiko Saito. Junior in Mercy High School. Had a boyfriend named Derek Thompson. Also a known bully, one of the schools 'mean girls'. Her main target of bullying...Elidor Lyons." Esper kept his eyes away, to the point he turned his back to the photos. "You can check at least her communications with me on my phone. She and I had a bit of a friendly enemy thing, because...her boyfriend was my best friend once upon a time." He looked back, and noticed something odd. "Huntsman. I am incredibly confused. She was just at the school, or at least her emotional aura was." Esper looked away from the photographs again. Why couldn't Jacket just get here?

INDENT Esper needed to focus and gather all bubbles of information presented. He was actively visualizing a map of information packets, a technique he learned recently that worked well with his ASD. Tara was found dead this morning in a graveyard, and his looking at her body in pictures confirmed her identity. But that was her body alone there. Her emotions were at the school, so she had to be there alive and conscious enough to feel emotions. She had been missing since last night then, since Derek hadn't been able to talk to her about Prom details. There was someone who stole her body. Her hiding. Thomas's emotions. Perhaps...Esper sat there pondering it. There was a lot of unusual data here, namely Tara being dead and alive at the same time apparently, then her body was snatched. Though..."Hunstman, are there known parahuman elements that would be able to replicate the mental or emotions of a dead body? Or even animate one? Those would be the only current explanations for the discrepancy between her death and disappearance, and me sensing her at school. I couldn't actually find her though..." Esper would keep his eyes off the images, there was no point in looking at them anymore. In his momentary glimpses of them before turning away, they were burned into his mind. What would he tell Derek?

Jacket entered the conference room, pushing the doors open with both hands. She flashed a kind smile at Esper as she entered. The girl was bundled up like she was expecting to play in a cold breeze, and her skin had a slight shine to it. Both from the metal threading and the lightest sheen of sweat. She had caught the question from Esper. "High ranking Master capes and Stranger capes could be capable of animating the dead. I suggest Master Stranger protocols be in effect for the entirety of our investigation. " She said, folding her arms over the thin quilted jacket.

Hunstman coughed to stifle a laugh as it would have been a highly inappropriate one. Still part of him wondered why Eli would allow such a girl to bully him. However at least they had a lead now. Pulling out his phone, the man typed away at a few things and a screen behind him lit up with images and documentation. Her social media presence was among them, it showed a smiling picture of her and a boy labeled Derek Thompson. The boyfriend, he assumed. Government files popped up as well, including her driver's license and vehicle registration. There were also police reports. Apparently she had twice reported being stalked, but the department declined to investigate as "there was no evidence" that she was in danger. A black mark on their performance apparently. There was also an internal report about the incident in which Eli was arrested. Tara Zirnitra was listed as a witness. "Hey Jacket, and that's probably a good idea. We know that Mimic operates in this city. Hell she's eighty percent of the reason why we can't move against the Undersiders. I don't know if she can copy auras as you put it Esper but we'll go over the passwords in a bit." His attention turned to Eli, "I know there's some personal feelings there but how do you feel about the boyfriend for this?" It might have stung a bit for him to think about but it was a pretty standard question. If a girl gets found murdered, the number one suspect is usually her boyfriend or husband. Though that also entered into a lot of questions, like did he have powers or even still why someone would want her body. Nothing really made sense yet and perhaps there were two separate incidents going on. Bottom line was, they needed more information. He typed some more things into his phone, the desk jockey's in the building would handle notifying her parents so that they could get some closure and schedule a funeral. They'd also work to pull her phone records, and possibly try and locate the cell phone. It hadn't been at the crime scene so as of now it was still missing.

His brown eyes looked to an evidence bag on the table containing a pair of keys. "I'll look through your communications with the girl later. I do have something I want to look into though. Would you be able to recognize her car? I'll put out a surveillance alert for it of course but I don't like sitting around waiting."

INDENT Huntsman was bemused. Jacket was serious and focused. Esper...was confused. There was a lot to process internally when approaching this particular investigation. This wasn't you standard patrol. This wasn't going to be a normal clean up after the Undersiders. No. This was personal. This was far to close to himself. So, he did what he thought was best in this. Before responding to Huntsman, he typed up a quick text to someone he was now concerned for: Alexander Deckerman. "Trouble. Go home. Will let you know when safe. My place." He didn't know why he was concerned for him before Derek, something about thinking he was in danger hurt his heart. Esper turned around to face the investigation fully, heart steeled to all possible outcomes. "I will upload my texts to the files we have for the investigation. I can also identify Tara's vehicle easily. This...may also be my first time dealing with strict Master Stranger protocols. I understand code phrases are used to identify each other based on a pattern that is both individual to the person, but has a direct theme to be interpreted. Historical texts suggests Weaver, when she was Skitter, used a color based system with first letter and last letter of their teams civilian names. Another variation used during the second coming of Slaughterhouse 9 involved chess pieces and a word related to your power set. Am I correct in that we will be establishing a key, such as chess pieces or color, then having individual based phrases?" Esper was trying hard to focus on the mission before his emotions, falling back into his early ASD symptoms of seeming withdrawn and detached.

INDENT It was incredibly difficult to maintain that detachment when Huntsman asked if Derek could be the culprit. Esper shook his head. "To put it bluntly, he makes a saint seem impure. The boy thinks only of sports or friendship. If I remember correctly, he was a virgin until he started dating Tara. He was also the most transparent person to read with my ESP. While normally it takes a week or so to adjust to an individual's aura and track them within my range, he...it took about a day. That is how straight forward he is. I doubt he did anything. If you bring up she was the one who died....he will seek to harm to culprit, if found, even it if means fighting a parahuman. I recommend keeping him in the dark as long as possible." Esper needed to hold a moment, and think if it were his own feelings wanting to protect him, or if he was being objective enough. He sighed when he realized he couldn't fully remove his emotions from him. "Though, if you feel it pertinent, your command supersedes my thoughts on this. I may not be objective enough, in spite of my own difficulties with emotions, considering my disorder." That was perhaps that hardest thing to admit, that he may be faulty. The therapist did recommend that though, not as an act of humbleness, but to acknowledge his own humanity, and thus the fallacy of his own mind and emotions. He would look at Jacket though, and lightly slug her shoulder. "Looks like this investigation is oddly suited to us though. Search and destroy." He gave her a half-hearted smirk, to try and convince himself that he was fine, but deep down, Esper was disturbed and concerned.

A simple nod indicated that he understood. This was good, with Eli's help they could gather new evidence and try to figure out both who killed the girl and why a parahuman is involved. The case still didn't make sense to Ethan, and that bothered him. At present it felt like two separate events that might actually be wholly separate. Only time and pulling at the threads of truth would reveal the answer in its entirety. "For this mission our challenge phrase will be a bird, and the response phrase will be a color based on the first letter of our civilian names. For example mine would be Hawk with an acceptable response of Ebony. Esper your challenge phrase is Penguin and Robin yours is Cardinal."

The information about the boyfriend was interesting to say the least. It didn't rule him out, but he really did seem to be an unlikely suspect in this whole incident. Plus Eli hadn't mentioned them having any kind of fights or arguments. He'd investigate that later, but for now he was satisfied and would look to the evidence first. "I value both of your opinions, I dunno how other's do it but so far as I'm concerned you guys aren't for show or publicity. You train hard, work hard, and you make me look good." he winked at the end laughed a little. A joke mixed in with real emotions. The truth was he was actually proud of his wards. With that he shut down and the projection and collected the evidence folder. "We'll start at the cemetery and try to figure out what happened from there." On the way out he'd drop the the folder off with a secretary to log into the system but held onto the evidence bag containing the keys. [Exit]

INDENT The weight of Jacket's hand surprised Esper, and he did grunt a bit upon impact, but he stood firm. What she said was true: Esper was the best source of information on Tara. The next best? Derek himself. So he would get drawn into this investigation regardless of Esper's actions. When the challenge phrase was offered to Eli, he stifled a laugh. Penguin? I guess it was designed in order to be unpredictable. Esper nodded, even to his statements about publicity. Esper didn't want the limelight on him at all. The longer he could avoid being in the public eye the better, but as he continued working and training, he would eventually be a key member the public would know about. "Hunstman, the work you put into our efforts ensures we will be the best we can be in any circumstance. I value your mentorship immensely, as without it I may still be...prone to outbursts." Esper was of course referring to the incident that lead to his offered position with the Wards. Esper would let that fade from the forefront of his mind, preventing himself from fixating on it for too long. Instead, he immediately honed in on the mission.

INDENT WIth mention of starting at the cemetery, Esper made a puzzled look. "Sir...why would we start there? Local police likely have all of the evidence they could glean from that location, and so far no one has left a strong enough emotional imprint that my ability functions similarly to Psychometry, unless either of you have hidden talents in forensics or detective work, we should likely go to the station, where the parahuman event occurred and where all documentation of the cemetery's...and he's gone." Esper made a face, then followed after Hunstman. He was head man. Esper wondered if he even knew what Psychometry was. That frustration would fade quickly though, he needed to be 100% on this mission, as it was one of the few bigger ones he was on a team for instead as an individual. So much could go wrong if communication fell apart, and Esper, no Eli, often fixated and tunnel visioned on a single train of thought instead of seeing the bigger picture.

After Kendall had dropped off his things in a locker in the armory, he had changed into his uniform, minus the light power armor of course. Laced up, thick combat boots protected his feet, tied around his ankles to keep them secure around his beige pants and camo jacket, open around the dark green shirt. His face was not yet obscured by the bandana he wore, but the fingerless gloves that he wore over his hands for grip were in place. He was no brute or striker, but he was definitely in shape and the uniform made him look a stretch more intimidating that he did in his casual wear.

Seemed like he couldn't avoid being scary no matter what he did, but that was neither here nor there.

Kendall approached the office apprehensively. He had the phantom smell of cleaning supplies filling his nostrils as he recalled often he meandered down this specific hallway to be punished for breaking ranks, or deviating from plans that had specific instructions to take on some threat that could probably have killed him. He always argued that he was alive and the misison was complete but that wasn't the sort of argument you every really won. So he had taken to closing his mouth and learning to stay in his place. If he ever wanted to climb the ranks here and make the difference in the world he wanted to, to make villains less foolhardy and more fearful of the ever present eyes of the Dragon's Teeth, he would need to play by the rules. Which brought him to the reason why he would be knocking on the door to the office of Defiant and Dragon.

Defiant was in today, it had been by chance that he'd already been in New Brockton before the current events had begun to shape up though Dragon would soon be joining him within the city. Looking at the name displayed on his monitor left him with feelings of anger and regret, at least to the extent that he could feel such things anymore. The knock at the door was a welcome distraction. "Come in" he called out in his usual curt and brusque manner. His face bore no more emotion than usual, it was tight and continually pulled into somewhat of a displeased expression.

The office itself was simple, two desks, two computers, and very little ornamentation. Utilitarian would perhaps be the best word to describe it. Defiant himself sat behind one of the desks and while seemingly staring at the door to the office. Perhaps it was one of the more intimidating things about the man. The monitor would be switched off, a simple precaution against leaks. He still remembered the time back in 2013 when the Protectorate had been crawling with spies. To this day that woman still got under his skin.

The order had come along for him to enter, and Kendall took a deep breath before he turned the knob and stepped over the threshold. He stood tall and firm, saluting before speaking. "Kendall Weiss, sir." he offered though it wasn't exactly necessary. He put his hand down and his eyes fluttered about the familiarly empty room. It never ceased to putt Kendall off how empty and plain this specific office was. Either way, he spoke plainly, getting right to the point. "I've come to inquire about whether or not there are plans to look into the strange murder case that occurred in the cemetary?" He would take out his phone and point to it. "It's been all over the news today, sir" In addition to that, he hadn't been out in an official capacity in quite some time, and he wanted an excuse to stretch out his brain, as it were. That and something didn't sit right with him about the murder, and New Brompton was nothing if it wasn't historically a hotzone of cape activity. If a villain had murdered this girl, he'd make sure they really got cozy with fear. With his hands behind his back, he was clinching his fists together so hard his nails should have been digging into his skin. Thanks to his powers, he wouldn't do any harm, not really. Something about defiant just always put him on edge, besides the normal "military superior who also punished me thing."

His expression was unchanging, an emotional wall. It wasn't something Kendall had done, that was just Defiant's default setting. Gruff a*****e, as it were. "What can I do for you officer Weiss?" The response was professional even if it still contained his gruff voice. While Kendall took in the room, Defiant's eyes never left the man. "There is, Huntsman took up the case with a couple of wards." The case was familiar to Defiant already, even if he wished it wasn't so. Though he did wonder why this man was interested in it. Part of him wished it could be for noble reasons, though few people truly had pure intentions in his experience. Dragon, his wife, was one of those people. While they talked Defiant was accessing all of the files on Kendall Weiss, vetting him. This was not something he wanted screwed up by someone who seemed untrustworthy. While Weiss had shown to be the cause of some problems in the past, the man did believe in second chances. "Were you looking to join the investigation?"
