New Brockton's Downtown disctrict is a thriving hub of office space, shops, and dining. It has numerous outdoor places to sit and chat, or share a coffee. Numerous people frequent the area at all hours and it's also where Mercy High School is located. There's several sights to see in the down town area as well including the Sabah museum of art, and a bizarre statue of a magnifying glass which has a stylized purple and black eye emblazoned on what would be the lens of if it were it real and not a sculpture.

Where am I? Everything is black. Am I still in that hole? Is this death? Thoughts raced past Tara's consciousness as it slowly came back online. The last thing she remembered was bleeding to death in a muddy hole. She had thoughts again, but everything was dark. She couldn't feel anything. Then a peppering of tiny dots of light began to fill her vision. Stars, the realization hit her hard. So this is it huh? I guess I thought death would be different. People talk about heaven but I don't see it, mom and dad talked about ancestors and the underworld. This isn't that either. It's too... peaceful, to be hell though. Too quiet. Looking out over the sea of stars she just seemed to float there, all alone. No breaths to take, nothing to feel on her body, it was just peaceful. A word seemed to flash across her mind, agreement. She didn't comprehend it at first but then she saw them, two beings of incomparable form. Shimmering, shifting, moving further apart and then closer back together. Her eyes drifted and she saw a third being, it was alone and moving at an angle away from the pair. Slowly her body rotated back to the pair. A sea of what looked like shooting stars filled the view of that beautiful blue marble down below. Tara wanted to cry, it was the prettiest thing she'd ever seen. Then another word flashed across her consciousness, rebellion. Suddenly the world seemed to be ripped away as she fell further and further into blackness. Death, a readiness to accept it filled her mind.

In the morgue of the New Brockton Police Department's Downtown precinct a body began to glow with light. Contained within a refrigerator and placed on a slab not a soul was around to witness it. That currently glowing body was found the previous night, covered in mud and blood it was Tara Zirnitra's body. Soon it began to flicker as if it were a projection of light rather than a physical body. The flickering gave way to an almost static like interference until it blinked out of existence. Though more accurately it could be said that it disintegrated into quantum bits. Tara Zirnitra had undergone a trigger moment in the final seconds of her life. A shard was responsible for first stabilizing her body as it grew a corona pollentia and then for changing her body from the inside out to a different state of existence as a means of preserving her life. A figurative middle finger to the grim reaper, her body entered that of a quantum state of being neither alive nor dead. Of being everywhere and nowhere for that matter. However as a sentient being Tara still produced conscious thoughts and as a result of this a new entity of her own creation began to form upon the slab where her body had been. At present it was just invisible atomic scale energy. A mass of emotional and psychic energy effecting its environment.

It was dark again. A lack of sensory input permeated her thoughts. The peace of it all was interrupted as a new sense took hold. It was kind of like pressure? Not really like contact or a sense of touch but it was perhaps a different way of it? She was... not laying on... but against? Was that right? There was something metallic under her. That sense of endless space fell away and soon an additional sense entered her mind. More metal, it was in the shape of a, box? Confusion was at the forefront as Tara struggled to make sense of everything. She tried to move her feet but felt nothing. Movement, the thought seemed to cause a shift. Her senses indicated that one end of the metal box was getting closer. Intersection. The thought didn't make sense at first but suddenly an array of new information bombard her mind as a bizarre unfamiliar sense crossed her mind. Suddenly there was light. Sight filled her mind. It was an ugly looking room with some kind of metal table in the center. Doctor's tools littered the room and manila folders contained pictures and other paper work. Wait how did she know that those existed inside the folders. Tara could feel a shape behind herself. Square blocks of metal with latch handles on them. Each had a paper rectangle bearing ink on them. Inside was a rectangle of metal, some kind of slab, and roughly human sized bags? What this room was began to dawn on the girl until she slowly turned around and saw for herself. The morgue...

The sight had a grounding effect. Something to really hit home the notion that she had died. A new gnawing thought emerged. She'd seen something among the stars, maybe they were some kind of gods. But ultimately she'd been ripped away from them and was now back on Earth. At the same time though it really didn't feel like she had a body... so then that meant. You've got to be ******** with me, there's no way I'm a ghost. She moved towards the door and tried to reach for the handle. Nothing, no arms. Or at least if she had arms she didn't know how to use them. With no small sense of trepidation she moved forward until that sense of mixing filled her mind again. Passing through the door was, weird. Her brain could barely make sense of it but it worked. Now out into a hallway she seemed to hear people talking. Weirdly it actually felt normal. Guess ghost's hear things the same way people do. She was wrong of course, but it was true that her brain was still processing sound in a very similar way. As she moved into other areas of the police station, Tara soon realized that the people there couldn't see her. In an attempt to get noticed she tried to speak, but no sound came out. After that pathetic attempt, it finally dawned on Tara that she had no lips to speak with, no hands to touch things with, and probably no legs to walk with. So how then had she been getting around. It dawned on her then that she was floating. The sudden realization not only threw her for a loop but caused her to lose control. Suddenly everything around her was moving by very quickly as she flew through desks, filing cabinets, and walls. Suddenly even more light filled her vision as she found herself outside. The shock of it all caused her to stop and stare with a sense of jealousy at all the people walking around in their own bodies.

When the NBPD examined their security footage later to see what had happened inside the morgue, all they'd get would be a massive blob of static moving around on camera. The news of the missing body, and the strange phenomenon would be passed on to the Dragon's Teeth and also the Wardens. If a parahuman was involved, it was their problem now.

None of them reacted to her presence of course. Though it's not like she could really see them. Her eyes told her that everything was black, but another sense was pinging her like crazy. The information was chaotic and disorganized. Concepts filled her head: threads of cotton, leather, threads of nylon, diamond, gold, silicon, denim, silk, concrete, glass. Slowly it started to come together and images formed within her mind. It was like a grainy picture of objects. The faces of buildings, the stuff people were wearing, everything that wasn't made of organic stuff. It was actually really creepy. Seeing a world without people. It was all so confusing, earlier she had thought she'd seen the police officers but maybe her mind had just filled in the information differently to protect itself from being overwhelmed. As her new form of vision filtered into her consciousness it became apparent to Tara that she could only see about fifty feet away from some kind of nebulous center. At least she had a better grasp on the whole floating thing. Part of her wondered how fast she could actually fly, it was at least something to do right? If she was going to be doomed to an eternity of roaming the earth then the least she could do was figure out a way to see it all.

Picking a direction, the world began to move in the opposite one. Soon she was picking up speed and watched as the cars came into view and left just as quickly. In the congested downtown city streets she was actually faster than the cars. She'd need a highway to really test it but it seemed like she could exceed forty miles per hour while flying. That was kind of impressive. It'd take forever to get across the country or even like the ocean but it'd get her around the city quick enough. The feeling of passing through the air was... interesting. But it was kind of scary since she couldn't actually see. With the whole flying thing being so based in thought she began to wonder if there was more she could do by simply willing herself into doing it. The ground slowly moved closer as she approached the throngs of people upon the sidewalk. Arm she thought wishfully. Slowly a strange sensation overtook her consciousness as the word 'concentration' flashed across her mind. Suddenly it felt like she had an arm again. This is so weird, maybe if I can concentrate my body will come back? That weird feeling continued as she worked to focus on the other parts of her body and soon it actually felt like she had some kind of human form. She still wasn't visible yet so there was no way to check but it at least felt better. Tara tried calling out again but it was no good. She still wasn't able to talk. A sense of rage filled her mind as she flew on to a different area. Thomas had done this to her. She was dead now because of him. Worst of all was that she had no way of interacting with anybody.

Flying in what she assumed was the direction of the more ritzy apartment area of downtown, Tara began to look for something to sate her boredom. A large television set, what she assumed to be a game console, and a lot of expensively shaped furniture caught her attention. Changing direction to there, she simply passed through the walls to get in. Something in the back of Tara's head told her it was wrong to be there like that, but at the same time why should she care? She was dead after all, and the place seemed like it was ******** sweet. Using her new senses she felt around and got a sense for the surroundings. Whoever owned this place was definitely loaded. Sucked that she couldn't touch anything. Honestly what good was being a ghost if she couldn't actually do anything. That was the absolute worst. More hatred for Thomas bubbled up to the surface. If he had just left her alone she wouldn't even be like this. Rage, it filled her thoughts until out of frustration she threw a punch as what she figured was a vase. The sound of it being knocked over and smashed to bits caused her to jump. Did I do that? Taking a knee on the floor she picked up a shard of pottery with a quiet sense of elation. A wicked grin crossed her new ghostly visage as the idea of just letting loose came into focus. It's not like she could get caught, or even be punished for that matter. Can't do s**t to a ghost. Laughter echoed within her mind as the shard was used to slice up the couch and other furniture such as pillows. It was actually pretty fun, destroying other people's stuff. Soon Tara was smashing mirrors, cutting paintings, and otherwise having a really great purge. Eventually there wasn't much left to destroy. Things felt more okay now. At least she could smash other people's fancy stuff to feel better whenever she got bored. Before leaving she made sure to grab some lipstick from among some other make up supplies so that she could write 'boo!' in big scary letters on the wall. Hmmm maybe I should see how that little rapist likes being stalked... plus ******** up the school could be fun. [Exit]

"CSI managed to get some skin cells, so it's possible we'll get a DNA match. Only time will tell there." Even with the impressive technology at their disposal it would still take several hours to search for a match. Sadly nothing worked as fast as it did in the TV serials. Making their way through downtown they'd eventually come to the cemetery where Tara was found. Hunstman would instruct Weiss to pull into a nearby parking lot before climbing out and looking around. "Now according to the available evidence, our victim entered the cemetery on foot and had keys but no car. According to our records her residence is...." he seemed to glance at a display upon his wrist. It showed a street which ran north-south and had the cemetery off one side of it. "to the south." That alone wasn't enough to go on. Her car could be that way if she had been traveling from her home.... Time of Death was placed at around 9 pm... stomach wound so the attack probably occurred around 5:30 or 6.... Huntsman turned his attention towards Esper once again. "You knew the victim fairly well right? Did she participate in any sports or clubs after school?"

INDENT The investigation was going to begin in earnest, and Esper was...nervous. He did smile though when Weiss said E S P er. "Thank you Weiss. I would rather stick to your cape name while we are masked, so people can avoid association. It is hard to believe I have an online following, since I am trying to keep a moderately low profile. I wonder how many people pronounce Esper the way you do though. Might have to make that public announcement sooner rather than later." He smiled, and gave a light nudge to Jacket. "Better safe than sorry, no?" The trip was under way. Huntsman confirmed some possible DNA samples, which would help a lot. The follow up question though, really did help. "Track and Field. Though...she was suspended a while back. I think she had to miss quite a bit of time, so she may have quit. Still, better to check towards the school, which...actually helps. Last time I sensed her was at the school this morning. After her death time." The last thing Esper wanted to do was get close to her house. Her parents. No, he needed to think like Esper, the cape. Not Eli the ******** up kid.

INDENT He exhaled deeply, and closed his eyes to focus. While he was passively taking in information within his radius of influence, do it like this helped organize and categorize information. Fear, confusion, curiosity, anger, sorrow, boredom. Nothing stood out here emotionally speaking. No one with pride or joy or other positive emotions, nor any familiar ones, except for a few morbidly curious classmates. Derek drove by though, in his vehicle. It was early. He was heading to Tara's house. That...could be a bit of a cluster ******** for the investigation. Best not bring it up yet. They need to find Tara's car first before trying to pursue other investigation avenues. He would open his eyes once he finished his scan of the area. "Nothing unusual here for a cemetery. Anger, shame, guilt, sadness. Things you would expect. No joy or mirth or anything similar. At least, at my present range." He looked down, he felt useless. No applicable skills outside of his power, and the 500 foot radius just...he couldn't cover all the angles yet. There were huge gaps in information. Something wasn't parsing right, and none of the pieces were fitting. Esper hoped finding her car would fix it.

Kendall pulled the Jeep over after a relatively smooth, pretty quiet ride. The directive to pull into the parking lot was followed, with Kendall picking a spot somewhat near to the cemetery. Within a few minutes they were at the scene, with Esper doing his thing to try and pick up on emotions. At the same time he was being extra careful not to allow his specific power to leak out of his mind and harass anyone else. That would likely not help them find anything at all. Sudden, rapid onset fear was never too positive of a thing to investigations. Still, Kendall kept his eyes open, holding the rifle at the ready as trained, scanning the area for anything out of the ordinary, if there was anything at all. He didn't have much to contribute to the group, not quite yet anyway. For now he was going to hold his voice until it would be something useful.

A Few Words over Coffee:Joseph turned the key in the door unlocking the StarBucks. He stepped inside locking the door behind him. He looked over the store checking for any issues he would need to solve before the store opened. Machines and surfaces were cleaned, Coffee blends were in good stock. He turned on the machine and poured himself a cup. Joseph sipped on the Caramel Machiatto and did his morning routine of reviewing order sheets and taking daily inventory.

After an hour Clair and Daniel knocked on the door. Joseph let the two part timers inside and directed them on their daily tasks. Only an hour before the store opened and the paper work was neatly filled. Joseph went to the back office and pulled out a copy of Vampire Wars and started reading while pretending to do paperwork in the back of the store and ordering his minions around. The door opened for the first customer as Joseph covered his reading material with a Clip Board. He looked over his shoulder to make sure the other two were working before he resumed reading. Today would be another good day.

A Few Words over Coffee:Joseph leaned back in his comfy office chair, thumbing through a few more pages of his book. As time ticked on he put the book down, standing up to stretch. He navigated his way to the front, checking up on Clare and Daniel. "Hey are you two doing okay up here?" Joseph asked Clare who was wiping the register counter down.

Clare turned her head while continuing to wipe the counter. "Everything is doing just fine up here Mr.Foster." Clare answered, her short dark hair swaying as she looked at him.

Joseph looked the store over with and decided that he wasn't needed and strolled back to his hidey hole. He took out a manuscript with scrawls and ideas and thumbed through it, trying to make a project that could make him a decent amount of money.

If the girl had been suspended it was possible that she might have dropped out. Still it wouldn't hurt to check further north first. At this point it was just a hunch of his, but the working theory he had going at the moment was that for some reason the girl had to leave her car and when she was walking past the cemetery the per grabbed her. However her meeting someone here and arriving from the south side could be just as likely though. Ultimately if he was wrong they'd just walk back down the other way and check out that direction. Worst case scenario she had parked on some side street and they wouldn't find the car for some time. "We'll head North first and see if we can't find the car... this is just a hunch so don't expect too much." Ethan looked around and noticed that Jacket had gone off on her own. His voice carried over the noise of the traffic to reach into the cemetery. "Jacket, don't stray too far off now. I really don't wanna have to admit that I lost a ward."

The grave next to Jacket was cordoned off with police tape. Some of the walls inside had eroded where Tara had tried to claw her way out. The drying mud at the bottom was stained with a deep red color. A trace of where she'd laid bleeding in the mud. For now the grave was a macabre marker of where a teen girl bled to death alone in the mud despite struggling against fate in an attempt to survive.

As they walked, Huntsman tried to strike up a conversation with Weiss to both keep the mood upbeat and to learn a little about the man. "So Weiss, what got you hot about this case? You asked to come along right?" About three blocks north from the cemetery, at right about the area where Huntsman would have given up on the search, was a very eye catching vehicle. It was a two door shaped like the muscle cars of the early 2000's, painted with a deep crimson pink and a pair of white racing stripes. The wheels had hub caps of chrome and Eli would recognize the vehicle instantly if he saw it. Tara Zirnitra's car.

INDENT Esper kept up with the conversation, periodically closing his eyes and focusing on sensing out people, hoping for someone lurking that was out of place emotionally. The conversation wasn't really important to Esper either, this investigation was. Then Huntsman spotted something, and Esper opened his eyes. It was pretty clear though the subtle emotional inflection of interest and focus. Esper didn't stifle his alarm seeing the vehicle. "That is her car." Esper kept quiet though beyond the confirmation. There wasn't much to say. Huntsman's instinct was top notch.

Kendall looked away when Huntsman asked him what had gotten him onto this case so heavily. He was far from a liar. He detested the notion, actually. So he wouldn't lie outright, in fact he would simply omit the small part of what made him want to join up that would likely come off as problematic. "This was murdered, likely something just as bad happened to her before that. Something about this really rubs me the wrong way beyond my somewhat stark sense of justice, you know. It's not fair that her life ended like this, but we can at least give her some justice." He stopped when Esper pointed at her car, and he approached it slowly, looking in the windshield to see what he could find at a glance without touching anything.
