Arkesh was a little on edge being so close to Oba. He had been trying to stay north and avoid the obans and matori that migrated to Tale. Vers however, was a kinfa breeder hub. He half hoped he could grow one himself and just fly away from his problems. They were pipe dreams but he wanted to check them out anyhow.

He played his usual shtick and asked people if they knew of On'os and preached the blessings of On'os and other gods. It usually captured a handful of curious locals and he was able to peddle for food or money. Sometimes he would try his luck and get lucky. He flirted with the local women unashamed. He did his best to keep an eye out for danger and any potential ally.

At the moment a curvy girl had his eye. He was going on about how On'os could benefit her life. "If you ask the god of fortune he will bless you with health and wealth. He can even bless you with beautiful children" he said to her with a wink. "But I don't think a beautiful woman like yourself would have any trouble with that."
She seemed mildly interested but his flirting wasn't getting very far. Perhaps he should just try his luck at the pub.

Nyx sat on a fence post chattering away with one of her friends, guffawing at the ridiculously spot-on impression he put on of the horrendous singing his father was prone to when he thought no one was listening (which was ALL THE BLOODY TIME, the man was half deaf by now). She wiped at her eye as she spotted her cousin Ermina sashaying her way down the street, smacking her friend upside the head as he gawked at her ample backside. “If you’re going to ogle my cousin, at least be more discreet about it when I’m around. Gods you’re such a dweeb.”

But it looked like he wasn’t the only one taking in the sights; another guy was talking to her now. Wearing weird red robes and toting around a golden staff, with unusually dark skin, and were those RED EYES―

She snarled and jumped down, leaving her questioning friend behind to march over to the pair, forcing her way beside her cousin, stabbing at the man with her steely gaze. “Who are you and why are you bothering my cousin? Ermina, want me to get rid of this guy for you?”

Arkesh was taken back when the otherwise beautiful creature was replaced with something far angrier and sharper. He didn't like the accusatory tone coming from it. He half held his staff in front of himself in a guarded way. He took a moment to examine the person. It sort of looked like a boy with a lot of makeup, with demon-like horns, no they were crystals on its head. He decided to play it cool to try to defuse the situation.

"I was merely informing these good people about On'os" He motioned his staff and it jingled. "The possibilities are endless really. Prosperity, fortune, a long life." He gave her an apologetic look. I bet he could even make you grow some breasts. But he kept that thought to himself. How this prickly beast was related to this fine creature was beyond him.

She scoffed, his apologetic eyes rubbing entirely the wrong way. “Never heard of him. Is that what YOUR people do, pray to some man to bestow you with miraculous gifts you haven’t earned for yourselves? Sounds like a lazy cop-out.”

At this point Ermina chirped in, putting her hand on Nyx’s arm. “That’s rude Nyx, you shouldn’t go insulting other people’s religions. He’s free to believe in whatever he wants, if it helps him find order in the world.” She repositioned the basket of nuts over her shoulder, cocking one of her ample hips with a hand upon it. “And I was doing just fine on my own, you don’t have to worry. We were just talking.”

Nyx looked down at her shorter cousin, puffing air through her nose. “Whatever.”

Arkesh was admittedly a little hurt by her dismissal of On'os. He decided to forgive her for that, she was ignorant after all. She clearly knew nothing about the gods.
"I can see you harbor unresolved feelings towards MY people. You are precisely the reason I am here today. Surely we can all recognize we are individuals. If I were to base my feelings about YOUR people solely on YOUR actions and attitudes I would not have had conversations with this lovely creature."

He leaned in closer to Nyx's cousin. "And I feel blessed to have met you. I can see the gods spent a favorable amount when they created you." he winked at her, "And I am glad they did."

Nyx sneared at him, crossing her arms. “I wish you had. Maybe then you wouldn’t be standing here on Tale soil tossing about that filth. I’ll just have to try harder to leave a foul taste in your mouth, send you back to your lands to spread the word that your people aren’t wanted here.”

Then he was all over her cousin with that syrupy dribble and Nyx gagged, making a disgusted face. “Ugh, really? How often does that line work?”

He was used to this. He had been chased out of town more than a few times simply because he was oban. It was fine, he could take it. On'os gave him the time, he returned it with patience.
Arkesh let out a sigh, "The main difference here, is you are judging me simply because I was born in Oba." he took a step back and opened his arms in a passive gesture. "Tendaji's message of unity and fairness was well received. It is nice to see so many of its people live up to that message." his mouth made a straight line and his eyes darkened a little.

He understood why the Oban's were mistrusted. But most folks weren't openly hostile. They would at least put up with you until they found a reasonable excuse to boot you out of town. If only he could explain he couldn't simply go back to Oba. It was better to risk the locals chasing him out with pitchforks than to risk a knife at his throat.

Nyx eyed the dark man, meeting his gaze. It was true she hadn't actually been able to meet many Obans in her life. But that didn't matter. They had started a war no one wanted and the people of Tendaji had had to pay dearly for their arrogance. It was best if they just stayed in their sandbox and left everyone alone.

"Don't try to tout that phony message of 'acceptance' and 'fairness'. I've heard plenty, many of you still talk of the way things used to be with fondness, just waiting for the chance to set things straight again like a bunch of fu-"

Her cousin elbowed her in the side, throwing a dirty look up at her. "That's enough Nyx, you're being very rude."

She wasn't wrong. Most oban nobles were elitist. Many were racist and even the lowest born were still entitled. But the way Akresh saw it, obans were just more honest. "You aren't wrong. Oban's do not hide their grievances. I will be the first to tell you about how corrupt our politics are. I know exactly how disparaged our slums are. I arose from the very filth of those cities." he felt heat flush to his face and chest. He was more passionate about his homeland than he realized.
"Even under all its filth and corruption. People flourish with culture and art. Our pantheon reflects the honest nature of all peoples, good and bad. You see, Tale is no different. Most people just choose to hide their true nature out of politeness. So you see, your blatant hostility is rather refreshing and almost makes me homesick."

Arkesh had surprised himself with his honesty. He hadn't exposed that much about his history in over a year. It felt good to let his mask slip a little, but he immediately regretted it. If anyone nearby knew or were agents in hiding, he would surely be dead within the week.

The honest and barefaced sincerity of his words caught Nyx off guard, shutting her up for at least a moment. He… liked her hostility? Was that a compliment hidden in there? Why was he being so forthright? He had a point; many of her people would smile at your face and then whisper behind your back. She was all too familiar with that kind of treatment.

Her cousin took the momentary pause in the conversation to grip at Nyx’s arm, giving it a tug. “Well, you see? They aren’t so bad after all. Looks like we are done here, so why don’t you just come with me?” She smiled at the man, giving him an apologetic look, “I’m sorry to have taken up so much of your time; I swear she’s really a nice girl. We’ll just be on our way now―”

NO.”

Nyx pulled her arm out of her cousin’s grasp, jostled back into the moment. This is what Obans do; they try to lull you in with words and trick you, striking when you are weak. Thinking they are better than the rest of us, with their big cities and fancy buildings. But they were all just well dressed rats.

No, you can run off home, but I’m not going anywhere.” She turned to face the Oban, squaring her shoulders and crossing her arms, “I’m not done with him yet.”
