Ruihi was excited, that's the only word she could use to describe her reaction to the most current news. For years, she dedicated her time and energy to be a messenger and as a result was one of the few Menehune to interact with the Kaha'iko across the canal. It had left her as an outcast, someone who was surrounded by rumors of abandoning their ways to live the lavish life of the wayward Kaha'iko. Even without constant interaction between the two races, each one had their perceptions thanks to rumors that spread from the bordering settlements.
Pausing a moment within the waters at that thought, Ruihi let out a bark of a laugh. Most may not know the truth about the others, but they would soon enough. The most current news would be sure to raise interest, fears, and general excitement among everyone in Kahikina. Ruihi would be her next tattoo design on that.
As she felt the transition to the thicker waters of Elehun, Ruihi could already feel the buzz of the community. The leaders knew she was called on an important mission, and that she would bring back some news to share. As she made her way to the bordering settlement of Naele, one of the few places where she was welcomed still for her interactions with the Kaha'iko, Ruihi ran the announcement back through her mind. They would want her report immediately, so she needed to make sure she was clear.
It took only a moment for her to be swept into the home of the leader, and she relaxed enough to take a deep breath.
"I come with great news from the Kaha'iko. They request the presence of the great leaders of the Menehune, in half a year's time, to discuss the growing concerns over the shrinking waters." Ruihi spoke quickly, eyes wide as she looked across at the growing number of elders. All of the elders were seated around her, including the ever reclusive Kapa'a, who was silent. Everyone waited for his response; he was one of the most devout of Menehune and if he was uncomfortable with the arrangement the others would refuse as well.
Ruihi just sat in silence and anticipation, eager to be part of such a momentous event.
"It appears that we have no choice," Kapa'a spoke after another long moment, his words slow and drawn, "Our waters too have receded, and that is a clear threat to our life. If the Kaha'iko too see such trends, we can only assume that this is much more dangerous than expected. We must work together to find a solution to this problem, so we can protect our homes and our ways."
It wasn't a surprise, after all, as the Menehune were willing to work toward a common goal if it meant safety, security, and solving a problem. In no time at all, the elders parted to head to their own settlements, to spread the news to their people. Ruihi left immediately to head back to Pale'iko to let them know of the response. Undoubtedly, the Kaha'iko would spread word as well during their trip to Noelani.
As Kapa'a watched his allies and comrades leave, he was silent. This was something deep to consider. News would travel that the world was now open, that people were encouraged to begin their trip to Noelani, a place normally seen as an end-of-life journey once a Menehune passed on. To open up the borders would mean opening up the Menehune to the Kaha'iko ways.
It was a risk, but he saw the water turning to mud, and the mud turning to sand. Their world was shrinking, and protecting his family was more important than keeping his pride.
