"Jao Yang" means "rising sun" and is the name given to the cubs entering the Phoenix Army. These young warriors will be posted directly under the service of Feng Huang as his first lesson in leadership. The cubs will grow together as a surrogate family, forming a bond that only brothers and sisters in arms can share.

This RP will be an introduction to this unit- it will be the first collective gathering of the Phoenix Army cubs. From the conclusion of this ORP you may request one on one rp's with Feng or any of the other members to further deepen the bond between them.

The cubs will grow into Feng's personal unit and one of the most highly trained of the Phoenix army. They will move as one body, understanding even the most subtle of expressions and gestures to move as a force of nature on the battle field. While they will start off clumsy, the Jao Yang will hopefully grow to be legendary as the shop grows.

Rules ||
• This RP will move along quickly! We will not be allowing for a posting order because if one person falls off posting then it will kill the rp. Thalion will make one post a day, regardless of activity, to keep the RP rolling along.
• Members who post actively during the duration of the rp will be given a free Paroo to join their cub.
• While most of the cubs are technically grown to adults, we will be playing them as cubs, so this is technically a backlogged rp.
• You can join late!

• This RP is in the Obsidian Coast, the base of operations for the Phoenix Army. Obsidian is a black, extremely sharp stone so the cubs are in a pretty harsh terrain.
• This RP takes place shortly after the current RP's with the FC's.
• ONLY Phoenix army cubs may post.

User ImageIn order to truly learn, one had to teach… or so Volga insisted.

Feng had trained beside his mentor and at the paws and claws of those that Volga had brought in to serve as officials, guides, trainers, and tutors. It was a schedule that had the cub practically dead on his feet by the end of the day. Sleep was precious and far too short, but he met every morning ready for whatever task he was given. While there lingered many answers that were yet to be answered, it gave the young cub a sense of purpose. Thus far, the reality of their situation was withheld from him. He knew only that he had to grow strong, clever, compassionate, and grow close to their maker before he was ready to face his role. His further inquiries were met with stony silence or clever evasions away from the topic.

That morning he was met with more questions and answers that he could only discover. Nothing came easily here. Meals came after a long hunt, water came after a rough spar, rest came after correctly answering a paw-full of questions, and praise came only after actually accomplishing something to a satisfactory end. A month of living in obsidian flow had hardened his paws and made his body aware of every sharp edge, smooth dip, and uneven foothold that it came across. He walked poised and ready, adjusting every step in small ways to avoid painful stumbles or brushes with edges sharper than any claw.

He had been led to a small flat just by the water and left to wait. Others like him- cubs – would soon gather to learn as he had. It would be his job to become a teacher, a trainer, a tutor, and a spiritual leader to those his age. He’d never…seen another cub before. His world had been made up of towering adults with paws as big as his head, mouths that could swallow him whole, and words that left him confused and dumbfounded more than anything. He felt…small. How he could /lead/ anyone was beyond him. He didn’t feel like a leader, he didn’t feel like anything more than a bumbling cub…which he was in many ways.

Ren landed just on Feng’s shoulder, fanning his wings out for a span before tucking them gracefully behind him. Feng shot his familiar a warm glance before glancing down towards the water. “I suppose they know best… I’m supposed to do this alone-“, He smirked a bit. “…I suppose you don’t count. You didn’t when we first met Volga.”

“Rrrk.” The familiar replied. He’d managed to “say” a few words but they were never understood by the familiar himself. He understood things to a degree, but often times the words that came out of his beak were random statements that he’d over-heard. They never made sense- but it was worth a chuckle.

“I suppose you’re right.” Feng said, humoring himself more than the paroo, “…here they come. By the Weaver, are we really that small?”

Mazin’s feet hurt. The cub looked down at his toes and watched his feet as he walked. It didn’t matter how he adjusted the sway of his step, every foothold was greeted by the agony of sharp black rocks jabbing into his soles. He supposed this was one of the weaver’s tests for having sacrificed comfort for righteousness, or something along those lines, but that didn’t make him feel much better…

As he looked up from his feet, trying to ignore the pain a brief thought of returning home flashed through Mazin’s mind. He shook it away the moment it entered his head. While the thought of the comfort his mother, father and sisters provided was alluring Shen was still leader of the fire tribe. Shen and his army of bad meanie b’alam...

Mazin’s eyes lit up as he spotted water in the distance. They were almost at the meeting spot! Agony of the black rocks forgotten the black cub immediately slipped into a playful mood. “I’ll race you there!” he merrily challenged to the two others walking alongside him.

User ImageSej did not like the feeling of pain presently overwhelming any other feeling there was at his feet as he also moved toward the meeting destination where Feng and Ren were located.

However, he was trying really, really hard not to let on about that fact.

And so, his face seemed set in a scowl while he walked tensely onward in silence, biting back the voice that wanted to express his distaste for the sharp sensations shooting up his body with each step he took.

Then, a challenge was issued which served as a distraction he was grateful for. It allowed him to forget the harsh ground but only for a moment. A competitive yet good-natured gleam crossed his features as he pounced forward in affirmative to Mazin's query but then exclaimed suddenly in the next instant upon landing, "Yeahow-!" A chuckle left his throat next in pieces of syllables as he shook the paw that throbbed in pain the most right then.

As he tested it in the following seconds by tapping it slowly on the surface he stood at currently, Sej looked in his sister's direction, "Do you want to try racing, too, Keahi?"

Their parents had brought them out of the lands of the capitol just after Shen had stepped into power. Although her and her parents were not at the gathering that Shen held on that day rumors of his strength and values swept through the Fire tribes lands. Shen did not tolerate anyone who was not of the fire tribe. Thus they left, due to her and Sej's mother being of the Wind Tribe. Although Keahi was normally a playful cub just like her brother, she understood that now was not the time. Shen threatened their family with his views upon non fire tribe members, and that she could not have.

Keahi was the type of cub who wanted to keep her family close, and so this was her answer. She wanted to get stronger so she could protect that family. It seemed to be the same with her family. Sej was here with her, ready for training. Their father off training with his unit and their mother off doing what she could for the rest of those around the area. Each member off doing what was in their power for the cause.

Carefully she made her way with the rest of the cubs, Sej and the black one who was with them. His name currently alluded her as he focus was upon the jagged black glass below them. Every once and a while she would silently wince as she stepped wrongly causing the daggers to tear at the softs of her paws. Being the only Nah in the group at the moment she decided she would keep her own pain to herself. She did not want her brother or the other male cub to think of her as weak.

Ears swiveling at the mention of a race, it lifted her spirits and yes she wanted to, but would that be the wise choice. She looked up from the ground towards both of the cubs beside her. Only to glance upward at the sky. With the hot sun pounding down from above and the black glass daggers from below. Despite being a fire tribe cub she was warm with the heat radiating from both above and below. Silently she concluded that a race would not be wise.

"No," She finally spoke. "It would not be wise to waste our energy and tear up our paws even more. One wrong step and the crystalline daggers below could do some serious damage. " She explained. "If you two want to go for it, but I will take my time to get to our destination." With that she turned her attention back to the ground below her and began to carefully walk again.

Feng waited until three tiny dots, two of them quite bright against the ebony landscape, broke the scenery and began moving towards him. The third nearly melted into the black around him. Only the yellow markings and streaming ribbon set him apart from the shale around them. He smiled a little. An advantage- just in pelt color... he certainly couldn't hide himself in the blackness of the land around him- he had to rely on other talents to achieve what he needed. The dark one seemed quite eager though he, like the other two, was moving on aching paws. That much was clear in the slight limp and the cautious movements of his paws. Thankfully, the obsidian around the lake was smoother, boasting larger boulders that were easier to avoid. Of course, that came with its own hazards. The smooth surface was easy to slide on- which had resulted...at least once in his taking an unexpected dip in the lake.

The second was another tah, bright as a new flame and just as spirited. Of all of them, he shared the long, flowing streamers that Feng had- how curious. He also had flaming markings along his shoulders and tail. The other, who shared some of his colors and marks but was clearly...different...was the more cautious one. She seemed to take her time, saving her strength for whatever came ahead.

How strange that each one of them was so very different...and so very small. It would be the first time he'd speak to another without having to crane his head backwards.

As they approached he lifted his head and began down the rocks, easily and carefully picking his way down just a few levels. He wanted to stand above them- the way Volga stood above him - if only so he could meet all their eyes easily and project his voice over them. At ground level he would have to turn his attention to one and neglect two, it didn't seem fair.

"Welcome, friends.", he called out, loud and clear.

While disappointed that the Nan cub didn’t want to race Mazin understood why. She was being sensible. By contrast- at least for the time being, Mazin was not a sensible cub. Instead a grin emerged and he flashed his smile at Sej, pleased with the Tah willing to entertain his racing game! “Your loss then!” He shouted at Keahi and then sprung away dashing. Mazin loved the feeling of the wind whipping against his fur as he ran. It made him feel like he could fly! Though his feet hurt with every inch of speed he gained the dark pelted cub felt as if the pain was evaporating. Then he noticed that it was actually the texture change of the rocks making running smoother. He let loose a laugh at the fun this racing all was and tossed his head back, fully intending to shout “I’m winning!” back to Sej.

Then he nearly fell.

“Woooah!” Stumbling ungracefully Mazin yelped with surprise. The dreadful feeling of panic seeped through him as he watched the ground grow closer and closer. He slowed his now sideways running and took a moment to regain his footing. How mean! The weaver had even made these smooth rocks slippery! Was this whole bluff nothing but difficult to walk on terrain?

“Be careful!” He warned the other two. Though Sej had probably slipped into the lead at this point… Oh well. The race had been fun exercise!

When he finally reached Feng, Mazin gave him a giant smile. “Hello! Are you Feng? We’re supposed to meet a guy named Feng here.”

User ImageSej, somehow, if he would chose to say so himself, ignored the prickles continually inflicted by the ground here and there while he proceeded with progressively hurrying steps involving his fore-legs following his hind-legs as he addressed his sister, "Okay, Keahi, I'll go ahead over there and then look back and wait for you."

"Alright, here I go," he then turned around while still in motion and raced forward as he informed Mazin he was undoubtedly participating in this race.

He heard Feng's greeting first. "Hi," he extended his own greeting brightly in kind from afar.

And then he saw and heard Mazin just right before he lost his footing on one stretch of ground and went spiraling at an onward diagonal on the now more slippery terrain.

He did eventually manage to regain his footing and arrive in the vicinity Feng and Mazin were at present.

While Mazin addressed Feng as well, he kept his word and turned his stance to face where they were traveling from to watch for Keahi's own arrival here.

Oh no...

Feng braced himself, wincing in sympathy, as the others skidded along the smooth surface of the obsidian. For a few heart-gripping seconds they were at the mercy of the ebony stone and their own aching paws. He knew it wasn't fun- he'd slipped right into the water. Thankfully only Volga and Ren had been there to see that little... incident. These cubs, like himself, likely couldn't swim just yet. Volga barely could, but he'd been tall enough to wade in and retrieve Feng before the water could claim him. Swimming, Volga decided, was something they would have to learn. It wouldn't be fun, but it would keep them alive.

He smiled a little more as the cubs, battered as they were, still displayed high enough spirits to engage in a bit of a challenge between themselves.

An ear perked as he was addressed by name. Ah, so they'd been directed here. He suspected he knew who had orchestrated this whole thing, but for the moment his attention was needed right here. "Feng Huang, yes." He answered, "And who might you three be...bold racers?"

Mazin knew his mother always said gloating was “an invitation for bad luck” but the dark cub couldn’t resist flashing a triumphant grin at Sej as he arrived. It had been a close match though, given that the two Tah’s had both stumbled on the black rock. For that reason a grin was about all the gloating Mazin allowed himself to enjoy.

He then turned his attention to Feng. “My name is Mazin!” Taking a moment to catch his breath Mazin used this time to admire the markings on the other boy, and noted that he and the Nah cub- Keahi and him bore some resemblance. Though not enough for Mazin to believe they were siblings or had even met one another before. They simply shared a dark base coat. Their markings were entirely differ-

The cub’s red eyes widened. He had noticed that Feng’s lumpy shoulder was… moving, and that it wasn’t a lump at all! It was a, uh, what were they called? It didn’t matter, Mazin was amazed by the not-lump regardless of whatever it’s species name was. “Woah!” He exclaimed loudly. “That’s a cool critter!”

User ImageRight about now Sej was finding himself juggling a lot of thoughts. Though fortunately for him, his energy levels were high as well and strain was far from overwhelmingly apparent on his features thus far. In fact, he was grinning, too, actually because sharp and slippery obstacles aside, he was having an all in all good time in the company of cubs he and his sister were sharing in meeting them today.

"I'm Sej," he gave his name to them as well though stopped short of giving his sister's name after sending his gaze in her direction and back to the two he was presently conversing with when Mazin went on to speak.

A critter, he wondered with his mouth still partly agape from a paused intention to keep speaking what Mazin meant by that as he looked toward Feng with more detail-oriented attention. Then, the look of curiosity morphed into amazement when his eyes landed on the sight of Ren also.

Remembrance was then abrupt at striking him next, suddenly tensing his bearing followed by another rounding turn to look back and see how Keahi was faring on the way to joining them at this spot.

"Don't wait up for me." She muttered, mainly for herself. Step, by Step. She made her way through the spiky obsidian below. With each step she was gaining appearance of where she should step to avoid the stabbing of her paws. Once more she looked up this time at the boy's voices. Mazin's warning reached her ears first. Though anything before that had been a mutter to her ears as her mind was focused on the task she had set herself at hand. Finding a way through the black spikes with out harming her paws.

She had lifted her head up just in time to see her brother go slipping about, losing his footing ahead of him. She made a mental note of it for when she would get to that part to use her claws to stable her. Unlike her brother she bore the fire claws inherited from their father. With each step she took her feet hurt, but she was getting more used to the heat on her paws as well as upon her back.

Slow and steady, that is how she went. Her ears picked up the mumbling of the voices of the Tah cubs ahead. Though she ignored them as she reached the smooth surface her brother had slipped upon. Using her claws she made her way towards the group of boys, keeping her composure as well as balance as she walked. Not once had she slipped on the way over. Her claws helped but her carefulness with the sharp rocks before had given her paws a bit more incite on how to navigate the obsidian below.

Although the rocks she were upon were the same as the ones she had just treacherously crossed, these were smooth, like the rocks she had found on her way to cross the pointed ones with less pain as her other companions had.

When she finally arrived to the group her paws were no longer hurting, nor was she overly warm. She had gotten used to the conditions they were placed in. Though it was probably temporarily, as she had no clue as to what she would be up against. Like her father she wanted to help fight against Shen, to protect her mother and the rest of her family. To do so she would need to train, and everything from this point she would take seriously, to protect them. She had to.

Her breathing was steady as she made a stop in front of the other cub, whom she presumed to be Feng, the one they were suppose to meet out here. Although she was surprised of the little feathered thing near Feng she did not show it like the Tahs did.

Giving a small glance to the other two she shook her head before raising her eyes to Feng. Silently she took in his appearance. His stance was strong, and he seemed a bit more mature then the two goof balls she had arrived with. Truthfully she found him quite stunning, and also found herself staring before she shook herself out of it.

"Keahi," She spoke giving her name, after taking a deep breath in, regaining herself.

(Thal i hope you don't mind Keahi might be developing a bit of a crush on Feng. I'd be up for a bit of 'romance' between the two even if it doesn't become serious. )

As the three cubs arrived at the base of where he presently stood, nearly all of their eyes fell first onto his paroo. For a moment, brief as a breath, he thought it quite odd that they would be so fascinated with him. After all, when he had first seen Ren he hadn't known what to make of him. Now the winged creature seemed more or less like an extension of himself. It was there overseeing every training session, it was a comforting bundle of feathers and fur during the cold nights laying on his back, it was a pair of watchful eyes high above, and it was a companion to help him during his first day as a teacher. He didn't feel alone. In his mind, Ren was the Weaver's way of laying his great paw upon Feng's shoulder, comforting him.

He smiled a little. "This is Ren, a creature known as a paroo." Feng held one of his paws up and allowed the creature to walk down the limb, balancing itself between a thick, powerful tail and strangely careful paws. "Ren, like the very stones under your feet, is a part of the world we were woven into. Unlike the stones- Ren has a heart, soul, and a mind like us. It's more simple- but it's no less capable of forming a bond. Through that bond, it will serve as my eyes high above." He threw his paw forward and Ren went flying over-head, screaming loud as it shot over the cubs. With a few powerful strokes of its wings, Ren went skyward. He'd been commanded to scout in that one simple motion.

"The world around us must become as familiar to you as Ren is to me. We must be the masters of it and of ourselves. That is why you were brought here." Feng jerked his horns towards the towering mountains nearby, mysterious peaks that hid a kingdom in chaos just behind them.

"Beyond those mountains sleeps a terrible evil. This evil sees this world as something to be molded by ideals, not a truth that we must conform ourselves to. In attempting to bend reality to suit his needs, he shatters many. I have only heard of these things...but it has been asked that I make ready- and that I teach you as I am being taught."

He glanced back to the cubs and lifted his head, "Keahi, Mazin, and Sej- from this day forward we are brothers and sisters. If we fear, we do not fear evil. If we stand, we stand as immovable mountains. If we walk, we walk as a rolling storm. Are you willing to do this- together?"

Mazin was caught off guard when Ren went screeched and left his perch on Feng. The cub instinctively bent down as if to dodge being hit by the paroo as it took off. Though his ears were swivelled back slightly and his fur appeared to have bristled a bit, Mazin’s eyes were filled with wonder, with admiration. “Cool.” He whispered under hushed breath.

His darkened form sprung back up from his crouched posture and intentively listened to the rest of Feng’s speech. The sleeping evil… What would happen when it was awake? Would it spread, fester and loom over all corners of the world? A passing thought of Shen mercilessly attacking other tribes spooked the cub and it sent a chill running down Mazin’s spine.

“Yes!” He shouted a tad too loudly. “Together let’s all stop those meanie b’alam!”

Mazin's enthusiasm was contagious. Feng found himself smiling a little more at the bold exclamation down below. Sadly- such enthusiasm likely wouldn't last for long. They had a difficult road laid out before their paws and a very, very dangerous task ahead. There had never been an event in the young history of the world where masses of B'alam turned on their brothers fang and claw. According to Volga and the others, such a clash was unavoidable. B'alam would get hurt...or worse.

He steeled himself, clearing the smile from his maw as he continued. "Today is the first day of many. When the sun glances over the horizon-", He pointed towards the bright sphere in the sky with a paw, "You will assemble here and I will come to meet you. We train until the sun meets the center of the sky. From there- you go to your dens and help the others gather provisions. I must return to my own training so I am better equipped to teach you."

He jumped down from the ledge and easily slid down to join them on their level. Every movement was almost boneless. He moved with the land, allowing the subtle shifts of the shale and slabs to determine his movements.

"Today we're going to begin learning how to move here. According to my trainers, battle is an ever-shifting thing. Like the land here, it moves constantly in unexpected ways. Move with it wrong- and you get injured. Move right and it can be to your advantage. You cannot control what's under your paws any more than you can control another B'alam- so you must learn to master yourself."
