Donation Gate

If you're not one of the many patrons awaiting entrance through the main gate because you weren't smart enough to pre-purchase your ticket then you're funneled towards a separate gate where a girl with turquoise hair pulled back into a braid that cascades down her shoulder is happy to greet you. The teen looks even happier if you've brought one of the approved non-perishable donation items for the local food bank so you can get a ticket discount.

She's happy to take your donations or just your money, with the spiked entrance fee of an additional $5 because you were too lazy to purchase them online or make a trip to the store or because you didn't know you wanted to go until you saw the line up. Whatever your reason is, Rory's here to take your money and goods in exchange for a wristband.

Upon signing up as a volunteer Rory had practically strong-armed her way into being head of the donation table. She'd even picked what type of donation's they'd take and what it'd be worth. When it came to volunteer work, well the teen took things very serious. And the festival was A+ because it meant she got to add something unique to her ever growing resume and because it allowed her to help the food bank too.

Two birds, one stone; perfect.

She'd arrived early, the provided shirt paired with a pair of jean shorts that fell just short of her knees and a worn pair of chucks that probably needed to be retired. Her hair was pulled up in a high ponytail because of the heat and her bangs were pinned off her face. Around her neck was a whistle on a bright orange cord, in case patrons got too rowdy, and she'd set up a table in a way that allowed her to stay organized.

Her seat was in the center of the table, right behind the cash box. She glanced over at the other volunteers with a big grin on her face and her fingers laced together and placed on the edge of the white fold-out table.

"Oh, this is going to be wonderful don't you think?"

Rory had been distracted by the approach of a patron who's donation she'd taken, along with their money, who she fastened a wristband around their wrist snugly. Afterwards, she turned her attention to Axton and squinted at him a little. Turquoise eyes regarded him carefully, as though a plethora of responses were on the tip of her tongue and she was debating which one to let slip.

"Come on, we're helping out the needy, getting some killer credits for school, and then we'll get to see some great musicians," she replied, arms folding across her chest in an unimpressed manner. "Maybe this isn't an ideal thing for you, but you picked it."

Rory practically lived and breathed volunteer work; helping out the less fortunate but she wasn't naive enough to think others would and while she wanted to lecture the older boy about how what they were doing was for the greater good, she had to admit that even she knew that collecting some non-perishables was like the least helpful of all things.

And maybe she really wanted to see some of the performers...

It was hard for Rory to keep from rolling her eyes, because she was sorely tempted. She managed though, because Axton was being pleasant and she didn't want to be rude. It was too early in the day for her sass to slip through and possibly make working with him awkward or annoying.

"Maybe you'll get lucky and get called somewhere more...'exciting'," Rory said, tone a little drier than intended.

"Is that a trick question?" She asked in response to his question, teal brow curving in an arch as she looked at him speculatively. "It's mostly school or volunteer stuff. Sometimes I board," she shrugged, nails tapping on the table and her lip pulled between teeth.

"What do you do?"

Rory considered her options, trying to decide if it would be smart to tell the guy what school she went to. Though, after carefully examining him, she'd decided that he didn't really strike her as the stalkery-type so it was probably fine.

"Meadowview."

Rory didn't have much, if any experience with boys of any age flirting with her so whatever the intention of his question had been went right over her head.

Oh, he was in college. That was pretty cool, she guessed. "What's leisure studies?"

Ah ha, high school. That was what he'd thought. She seemed fairly young.

The blonde had opened his mouth to reply, but paused as someone else wandered over and sort of inserted himself into their conversation. It had Axton glancing up at the newcomer, a brow arching up curiously, but he didn't seem to mind the interruption. "A branch of social science focusing on leisure," he parroted back, quoting one of his professors. Then he smiled, chuckling. "Leads to a lot interesting jobs in recreation or tourism." Wasn't the first time he'd been asked about his major, and it wouldn't be the last.

He folded his hands on the table in front of him, leaning onto them a bit as he gave the tannned man a better look. He seemed familiar, though Ax couldn't place how. Maybe he'd just seen him around the festival.

"Not bad. Rory's got a gift for getting folks to empty their wallets. I'm just keeping track of the numbers." Well, that was how the division of labor had gone so far.

Location: Coming up to the volunteers at the donation table
Action: Butting into the conversation between Rory and Axton

"That so?" the black-haired man said, regarding the blonde male thoughtfully. "Certainly sounds interesting. That mean it leads to a lot of travel?" He couldn't put his finger on it, but he felt like he'd seen this guy somewhere before. Kit watched a lot of people, though, especially when he was looking for random subjects to sketch, so perhaps this young man was one of them. Or maybe if he heard his name, it might ring some bells.

The teen straightened up. "Kit Paine," he said, holding out his hand to shake each of his fellow volunteers' hands. "Pleasure to meet you both. It's cool that you're able to work so well together, too, what with the delegation of tasks."

When he noticed the girl eyeing his shirt, he smirked at her but didn't say anything. She didn't seem to want to say anything either, though, so he left it at that. Since he was stationed at one of the medical tents and it still seemed fairly early, he doubted anyone would be needing his assistance anytime soon, so he wasn't concerned. If they did, though, they could always contact him on his walkie talkie.

"No one asked you to be sour about it, but I think some people might appreciate at least a little sympathy towards their circumstances," Kit chuckled, glancing over the people in their line. He stood off to the side so as not to be in the way close enough that he could continue chatting with the pair behind the table. He snickered at the comment that leisure studies sounded fake, but again chose not to remark on it.

Then the girl called Rory mentioned she'd been doing this job for years. Kit raised his brows in surprise. "Really? Why's that? Do you actually enjoy it?"

Ax just shrugged at Rory's doubt over his major. "It's real. or I'm wasting a hell of a lot of money over at DCU." Really, it didn't matter is she thought it sounded fact, her opinion had zero impact on the subject, or his future prospects with it as a course major.

His attention returned, momentarily, down to the paper he'd been keeping track of the numbers on, and he made another notation. Jotting down an amount he'd forgotten to add since the new comer had distracted them, then drawing a line beneath that to mark his place. he rather doubt the organizers for the event would appreciate if the records they were keeping didn't match the money in til, and he really didn't want to have to deal with any resulting mess that could come of it,

Then he was looking up at Kit as he made introductions and offered a hand. Axton returned the gesture with a friendly smile before folding his hands on the table top again. "Axton, and this is Rory," he nodded towards the high schooler. "And yeah, leisure studies provides a lot of opportunity to travel, which is why I went into it."

His gaze had turned to Rory as he'd been talking, watching he scoot her chair back and get to her feet. Seemed they'd irritated her. Whoops. "Hurry back." He really didn't feel like manning the booth all on his lonesome. He could be perfectly pleasant and approachable if he wanted to be, but it was so much easier letting her handle all the actual transactions.
