You Don’t Know Me, But I Know You: Being paranoid, Arkin spends a good part of his time gathering information and resources that he believes are proof or at least support any number of conspiracy theories. This includes constant research on various cults, alien activity, and secret societies. He keeps extensive notes in Composition Books, written in code(s) that only he has been able to decipher.
Anonymous: Arkin spends a good deal of his research time visiting various libraries, museums, and open research stations. He has a variety of aliases that he gives to any employees or people who see him on a regular basis, although he does his best to remain as anonymous as possible. He has had his fingerprints removed, and collects a variety of forged items for various names.
Head Down and Horns Up: The only things that may seduce Arkin into a crowded - even social - venue are metal concerts. He is known at most of the typical venues, and may even do some work for them when necessary (equipment set-up, tuning a guitar, light cleaning, that sort of thing). These events are one of the few ways that he can be reliably found, since he purposefully avoids sticking to a schedule.
Virtues: Zoom-In: Arkin has the ability to focus on things for long amounts of time, allowing him to slog through massive amounts of information (which he may or may not interpret correctly). This often borders on obsession, and may take up entire days unless he is distracted or feels threatened. He has spent hours researching code-breaking, and has always had a decent grip on mathematics. This does, however, cause him to see patterns constantly, even if they aren’t really there, or aren’t intentional.
Code Red: Arkin’s senses are typically on high-alert. Even when he’s busy reading something, he tends to glance around and listens intently for any sounds out of the ordinary. He is often in a mild state of fight or flight, which is handy in protecting oneself, though it may not be best for his physical health.
Your 10 is my 6: Due to certain life events and choices, Arkin has developed a high tolerance for pain. This is handy, considering that he often ends up injured though he refuses to go to an emergency room or hospital. He usually does his best to take care of any damage, although he has sources he can and does go to in an emergency. The ability to withstand pain means that he can keep a clear head (well, as clear as his head
ever is) despite an injury. He is capable of ignoring or working with pain that would affect a typical individual.
Flaws: Suspicious Mind: Arkin, as he prefers to be called (for the time being), is highly paranoid and believes that someone, or something, is after him. He left a job with the CIA (cyber terrorism) in the belief that they were monitoring him and chose a life off the “grid.” He is prone to holding back information or outright lying. Arkin rarely trusts, and that trust typically requires a lot of time and patience on the part of the other person.
Grumpy Pants: Arkin’s moods tend toward negative, and he’s often annoyed or grouchy. He is not the sort that will take mistreatment from others (even if it is only in his head). He can be (and often is) extremely mouthy, and the more distressed he is, the more he’s likely to start kicking. Being relatively short (5’4”), he usually aims for the shin. When his bad behaviour actually prompts a fight, he’s not above fighting dirty to win.
Unsettling: Arkin’s eyes are likely to dart here and there, and there is just a sense of something not being quite right about him, causing people to be uncomfortable around him. The uneasy sensation is aided by his occasional tics, which come in the form of a twitch that may tilt his head or cause an arm to jerk.
Physical Description: Hair: Dark-Brown/Black Shaggy, usually kept somewhere above the shoulders.
Eyes: Arkin only has one good eye: his right. It is an average brown color. His left eye is a fake that can match relatively well, depending on what he’s stuck in there that particular day.
Face: Long and oval with a nose just this side of too-large and a wide mouth with a thick bottom and thinner top lip.
Body: 5’4” and unattractively underweight. His skin is an unhealthy pale color from staying out of sunlight, and is often at some level of dirty. He has a large scar on his back in the (sort-of) shape of a pentagram from when his (mentally ill) mother attempted to sacrifice ten-year-old him to a Being from another dimension named Bzn'tör (the product of a cult of personality that she’d been sucked into). Arkin has added prison-style tattoos and scarification all over his body, most in the shapes of protection symbols or charms.
Fashion: On a typical day he wears an undershirt (
example), t-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, hoodie, and an oversized canvas field jacket (
example - color should be faded) as well as canvas pants (
example), steel-toed boots (
example), and fingerless work gloves (
example). All in shades of black or grey without images of designs if he has the choice. He also carries a messenger style bag (
example) that contains the majority of his possessions. Being homeless, he doesn’t have access to multiple changes of clothing and will often wear the same things until they disintegrate. Note: Links are only approximations.
History: Arkin’s attended a private academy as a young child. After the incident with his mother, he switched to homeschooling. Thanks to this, he graduated early (at age 15) and began taking University classes online. He earned his BS in criminal justice in three years. This wasn’t particularly due to his being overly smart or a prodigy: he was able to complete schooling early because he would work through summers and, as stated, is much of a loner.
The CIA then drafted him into Counter Terrorism (Cyber Crimes) at the age of 18.
He’s shown symptoms of Schizoaffective Disorder since his early teens, but these increased exponentially once leaving the familiarity of schooling and starting work. The added stress of the job, attempting to live on his own, etc. caused a full on breakdown in which he began to believe that the CIA had hired him in order to monitor him.
Within a year he left everything: his job, his apartment, etc. His homelessness was a part of this choice in order to hide from the CIA.
