This had to be the most embarrassing moment of Aten's life. Maybe it was the fact that he was so nervous about doing so poorly in his classes, or maybe it was because it wasn't an actual child, but somehow Aten had dropped the doll to the floor after pinning the diaper to his fluff.

It had gotten in the way before, but never do dangerously.

Aten flushed, mortified, and quickly scooped the doll up. Luckily only one person seemed to notice ...

Quickly, he applied the diaper as deftly as possible.

Aten leered at the ingredients laid out on the table. There were bundles of bananas, bags of cherries, plums, spinach, carrots, all sorts of choices. Each one of them had their pros and cons, and it was difficult to select just a handful of them to make in to food for a child. Luckily, the imp had a lot of experience with his house full of kids to know what combinations to stay away from. Others in his class didn't seem as knowledgeable as him. His years of experience raising kids had definitely been an advantage here ... however, his perfectionism had not.

Aten barely finished blending the food and sampled it before the timer went. The exercise was now over, and the imp had to hand in his 'assignment' for appraisal.

User Image The last place Florence thought they'd end up would be in a childcare class, but something lately had peeked their interest in children. Was it the companionship? Or maybe the ability to be there for someone that they knew they could do. The hybrid would be up to the challenge, there was no doubting that, but they would have to make sure they were ready if... If that possibility came up.

Their green eyes scanned the ingredients before them. This was great. The assignment was just cooking! That what Flo was in college for. Florence knew that they had this in the bag. "Baby food... Anything mashed would be good. But kids like sweets too so..." Oranges caught the hybrid's eyes. With quick hands, they washed and cut the fruit to fit it in the processor, all the while thinking if this would be what it would be like to have children. Hopefully when they were older, chocolate chip waffles could be on the menu!

Snapping back to their work, the puree looked just about done. Of course this needed a tasted! A big spoonful of the mush revealed the many flaws. "Oh... That's not... Right..." Lost in their thoughts, Flo had forgotten to peel the oranges and what more, they pulled a ripped up sticker from their mouth. "Ew..." Their sweet voice was soft and sad. It wasn't as easy as they thought.

User ImageCiel was careful in selecting her ingredients and comparing them, running hands that had been scrubbed hard against them. Yes, these felt right. Now which ingredients to use...yes...this one was nutritious, and the flavor would blend well with that one... She carefully chopped each of them up with the deliberate skill of long practice, then tipped them into the food processor and turned it on. She tried the result. It was a little blander than she would have liked it to be, but it wasn't objectionable by any stretch of the imagination. The texture was good. She wasn't sure about the color, though--children were supposed to be sensitive to the color of a food, right? This was, sadly, a subject she would never be well-versed in. She scooped the baby food out of the processor and into a plastic jar and set it aside to be graded.

With an endless stream of children that Aten seemed to be siring, this was something the imp was well versed in. Aten successfully burped his doll within a matter of seconds and received flying colours on the present assignment.

User ImageCiel selected her doll carefully, holding it as she would a real child, and gently burped it in the way demonstrated by their professor. She liked the over-the-shoulder method, personally--it felt safer than the others, and she felt like she had a better grip on the child as she performed the burping.

She thought she'd done the pattern right when the baby doll growled hideously. As it was right next to Ciel's ear, she jumped. The professor was nearby, and they were--chuckling? "Um, professor? I think I did something wrong?" Ciel burped the baby again, and once again it growled. It sounded possessed.

Apparently her doll was low on batteries. Whoops. But still, she'd apparently done a good job, so the sound didn't really matter all that much! Still startling, though.

User Image Eliot remained calm even though he was pretty sure he had done the assignment correctly and the doll was making very strange sounds. He was wondering if this was part of the assignment and maybe the infant had tummy trouble?? So he continued to try to make the doll feel better till the teacher came laughed and laughed a little in his direction that was when Eliot realized his doll wasn't working correctly.

Aten felt quite privileged. it was only fitting that he was working alongside the juniors. He had so many children of his own, and while he was well versed in the way of freshlings, juniors were far harder to please.

Some of the juniors he had to deal with were quite troubled, but it reassured him that his steady, cool nature seemed to reassure many of them. There were some hiccups along the way, but for the most part, Aten walked away from the experience feeling quite reassured that this was the job for him.

User Image Eliot walked into the sleepy little daycare center that morning, he like it. The slow pace gave him time to help the little purple and yellow imp Tellio and the red and silver chimera with their disagreement over who got to play with the teddy bear first. Eliot took his time to calm them down and figure out a way to help the freshlings sort out their problem. He had a really nice day, it wasn't exactly what Eliot hoped to do when he graduated but it was something to think about. Did Eliot want the fast paced job of a caretaker, taking care of many many freshlings, maybe never getting to know them one on one or did he want to work some place smaller where he could learn the freshlings names and help them one on one..

Hopefully this is still open!!

User ImageCiel was delighted to get placed at the Academy nursery. She'd grown up there herself after her parents...well, after she moved to the Academy, as it was. The children were pretty happy to see her, too, and she was happy to get to know them. A lot of them seemed preoccupied, though--they were almost ready to start school and start taking classes, so the atmosphere of excitement, anticipation, and anxiety was thick throughout the rooms the nursery was housed in. Every day she played with the kids and cleaned up. Really, it was a big nostalgia trip, and Ciel went home every night exhausted but elated. The nursery was the reason she'd wanted to become a caretaker, so she was quite blissed out for weeks.

Ciel's favorite experience was one that she wished she didn't remember so fondly--it seemed rude to be so excited about this event, since it had come in such a terrible time for the child it involved. The little dear was just barely old enough to be a freshling, but old enough to have strong memories still of their family. They were hallowed, and their parents had decided that they couldn't take care of them. It was terrible. So many people around October treated their children like, well, like exotic pets--they acted like they were gifts or novelty items, hey, look, this child is funny-looking! There was never any regard for the children. Ciel felt a twinge of guilt. The child had been left at the Academy while Ciel was working there. Their parents had just...dropped the child off at the nursery, signed some papers, and said good-bye. Needless to say, the poor dear was in a terrible state, and couldn't be calmed for weeks. They cried themselves to sleep and kept to themselves. It was horrible.

So why was that Ciel's favorite experience there? Well, it was because she'd been able to make a difference in the child's life, that was why. It seemed that the child had been told over and over that they just weren't good enough, and that being hallowed was a terrible thing. She wondered if it was the parents who had told them that, and had to push away a flush of anger at that idea. Instead, she took the child by the hand and took them on her rounds so that they could see her at work. She was a functioning adult, she could take care of herself--she wasn't an invalid, and she was accepted into society. There was nothing to fear, and nothing to be ashamed of. She hugged the child as they cried and played with them when they were feeling playful. When they needed a shoulder to cry on, she was there, an arm wrapped around their shoulders and holding them tight. By the end of Ciel's time at the nursery, the child she had been helping out, that poor hallowed "orphan," told her that they would miss her and wished she could stay longer. Ciel didn't have any choice, though--the semester was ending soon... "I'll be back, I promise," she told her new friend. "I'll visit every week."

The child had squeezed her hand in assurance and whispered, "thank you."

Ciel was there at least twice a week after that, sometimes more. All in all, getting to spend this time at the Academy nursery was the most rewarding thing she'd ever done.
