Vaeryn rushed back to his dorm room and dumped his bag off at his door, scurrying out of his shoes and nearly tripping over his laces as he tried to free himself from them. This was his favourite time of the day. Where Vaeryn could come home and be alone in his room with nothing but his computer. And his best friend. Sure, classes were fun, but nobody really understood Vaeryn like his online friend seemed to Sure, people might consider the connection less 'genuine' than a friendship off the net, but if Vaeryn was being honest with himself, this was comfortable for him. He was a bit awkward with people. Especially people of his own age group. It was just easier to be himself online than it was to try and overcome his crippling shyness. The people he had met online understood that. He told them that he struggled to make friends offline, and that only seemed to bring him closer to the people he knew. Forums sites were great, a gift in disguise! Vaeryn ran on all fours to his desk before propping himself up in his chair and opening up the laptop that was always left atop his neat and well-kept desk. Surely his bestie would be on soon! They were usually on around the same time he was, so even if they weren't on right away Vaeryn knew they'd be along soon. The boy booted up his laptop and waited with baited breath. Welcome back, snowbird! The site always greeted him so kindly! He prayed his chat handle wasn't misleading ... it made him sound a touch like a fallen ...

Maeve settled at her desk, tossing her bag at her feet with a soft and defeated sigh. Yet another day where she couldn't do anything in class but listen. She had given up on coaxing her voice out, ignoring the teases and jabs at the end of the day with a determined frown. She didn't need them. She never had. She had her siblings, and her online friend, and that was not only good enough but also perfect. People were often judgemental, and she had given up on trying for them.
Tiny little claws tugged open her laptop, turning the machine on and smiling at the familiar 'whrrrrr' sound that followed. She'd do homework later. Right now, all she wanted was to see if a certain someone was online. She had two sites she frequented, really. One that allowed her to chat with others, and another that did the same basic function, but using avatars within a digital world. However, the second site had been neglected as she stumbled upon someone on the simpler site. Someone who got her. Who seemed to understand her more than the others she saw everyday did. She doubted they even went to the academy. If they had.... they'd be friends already, wouldn't they? Sometimes, she daydreamed about them stumbling upon her school, but then the Grimm would hastily remind herself this was better. Then, they wouldn't have to see her stumble and trip over herself. She wasn't pressured to speak. She could be silent behind her screen name, and they still liked her.
Welcome back, honeybee.
The familiar greeting caused a gentle smile. The little Grimm tapped her claws against her laptop, waiting. She never was the one who messaged first, and today was no different!

honeybee onlineVaeryn clapped his hands excitedly, grinning as much as his unused muscles could allow. Yes, his friend was online! The wait hadn't taken long, and it always seemed that the two logged in around the same time. It made Vaeryn silently question whether or not his friend went to the academy or not .... but, with the world so vast, his friend could be up in Above for all he knew. They probably had an academy equivalent up there, right? Vaeryn didn't really want to think about school anymore. The time for that was over, and now he could share his day and try and relax a little after his exhausting day. hello, honeybee!!! ~ <3333 Vaeryn tried to greet his friend as cheerfully as he could convey through text. i hope that your day was nice. my day was nice but also hard. my teacher called on me in class today. while i enjoy listening to the lessons i don't like when they ask me to give them answers when i don't raise my hand. i got in trouble when i panicked and put my headphones on instead to calm down and got them confiscated ...Luckily Vaeryn had several pairs just for that reason. It was one of his biggest expenses from his allowance he received from his mom Ember. Vaeryn rarely ever spent his money on what he was actually supposed to ... like new clothes. Or food. Well, he did buy food sometimes from the cafeteria, but only once every few days when he really needed to eat. But usually he had a drawer of snacks over stocked so that he could stay indoors without having to expose himself to more people than necessary. i can pick up my headphones at the end of the week. it makes me sad but i guess they expect me to participate more.

Maeve never had to wait long, really. They were always quick to gain her attention, and today was no different. The familiar 'ping' chirped as her screen flashed an alert in the corner, causing tiny little claws to hurriedly switch over to their newly created conversation. Her heart fluttered nervously as, for a second she didn't know what to say. Maeve wasn't the conversation starter, but luckily Snowbird was.
'hello' Unlike her cheerful companion, Maeve hadn't mastered emoji's. She was lucky they didn't seem to mind, but they were an exception. Most people she messaged found her relatively boring, or, worse, she always sounded upset in their eyes.
'oh. i'm sorry.' She paused, frowning absently. Every single time she was called on in-class it was an ordeal, full of curious stares and nervous lip chewing. She couldn't speak – no, wrong. She wouldn't speak, and no matter how well intentioned the teachers were this hadn't changed. In fact, it had grown worse as she aged, and Maeve had begun to feel panic when she was summoned to speak. There had been discussion about sending her to the therapist, but she'd yet to be ushered over.
'can you get them back if youve been good before? they took about my phone earlier becuz i kept texting on it.' Of course, she got it back when she explained it literally was her only way of communicating to her family, but she remembered how much it sucked.
'um. today was ok i guess. they paired us in groups for a project and i was picked last. i dont think they liked me being there much. idk.'Ember-babe Sad puppy can't spell/type well, whoop. I hope Vaeryn can understand her :<

i dont know. Vaeryn admitted to his friend's question. He hadn't asked if he could have them back. He had just tired to accept the fact that they were likely gone forever, never to be seen again (at least, until the end of the school week). He didn't really want to think about asking a grown-up any questions. It was hard enough bringing himself to talk to his own peer group. He'd much rather just stay huddled close to his laptop and leave his social interactions to the internet, even if it was a much needed conversation he should have been having with an adult. why did they take your phone? =( whats wrong with texting?? one of my teachers doesnt mind if i type during class but maybe because they think i am taking notes??? The hybrid had to wonder that for a moment. There were some students who could type faster than they could write, and so were permitted to use their laptops for note taking. Maybe that was why he never got in trouble for having his some of the time? why were you picked last?? you seem so nice i would pick you first!! <33 Vaeryn tried to reassure his friend, but he didn't know what good it would do. Hopefully he didn't freak them out by saying so ...

Her claws hovered over the keyboard, frozen in place. What did she say? Did she admit the truth? That no one really liked her because she was selectively mute and thus deemed 'weird'? That she was a giant crybaby? For a few minutes there was silence, and Maeve almost wondered if snowbird had decided to leave due to her silence. Come on. Think of something. Respond.
'my teacher doesnt like when we text when she talks.' Another pause. Her little heart hammered before she decided to answer the last question, teeth digging into lips nervously.
'i don't talk much, so im not that useful, i guess.' That was one way to put it, but it was honest, in a sense. Quick, change the topic! 'what are you doing this weeknd?' Nailed it.

Vaeryn furrowed his brows a little as he read his friend's response. He supposed that made sense. A lot of adults didn't like it when you were doing other things while they were trying to talk to you. Especially when it came to teachers and their lectures. Though, moms reacted the same way teachers did too when you ignored them ... hmmn! that makes sense. Vaeryn started as he typed out his thoughts. my mom does the same thing when i go to visit her. i think she dislikes it because i don't see her often though.Vaeryn paused. He had heard his mom talk about his second mom Amari a few times, but always with this sad expression. Truthfully, he had never met the woman, but for the briefest of moments Vaeryn wondered if that was the reason why his mom didn't want him living with her. Was she just too sad? If she was lonely, why wasn't he living with her to help keep the loneliness away? Surely weekend visits weren't enough. The boy shook his head. That was an adult problem he shouldn't worry over. At least, that's what his mom Ember had always said. i am going to see my mom again. he typed. i usually go to see her on the weekends. it's the only time that i can. she is still in college so i stay at the academy because she has a really busy schedule.

Her ears flipped back, an anxious bubble surfacing. She was useless, wasn't she? She was glad their connection was limited to.... this. He couldn't judge her here. He didn't know her issues here. Maeve was safe, and, for now, she had a friend. Someone who didn't judge her or sneer. Someone she could speak freely to. She had looked away from the computer screen to pull her homework onto her desk, returning to it with a smile that dropped rapidly.
The academy.
He was here. He probably had seen her before. She had probably seen him before.
Panic surfaced, claws reaching to type only to erase what she had begun to say. He might even know of her. He probably found her painfully awkward, even. Who was he? Was he the kid who sat next to her and shied away when she dropped her eraser? Or the kid who rolled his eyes when the teacher tried to encourage her to read?
you live in the academy?
It was sent before she could even stop herself, dread swirling. Oh Nine. Maybe she should make an excuse. She had homework to do!
