With Smolder off to university now, Aten felt rather ... alone. He hadn't realized just how much time, effort, energy and stock Aten had put in to his relationship with Smolder. And for it to end the way it did between them?

Aten let out a small sigh.

Granted, it wasn't that bad, in all reality. Smolder had been quite understanding and kind to him about the whole situation. But Aten still felt the fool. If it had gone his way, things would have ended differently. The two would have embraced, kissed, and continued on with their lives happily-ever-after.

At least, that;s the idea the fairy tales put in to his head. But life wasn't like that as Aten had quickly discovered.

With a small shrug, Aten slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out of his class. The time for learning was over, at least for the day, and it was time to rest. The halls had seemed so empty and quiet with Smolder gone. Momentarily, Aten wondered whatever happened to Cassie.

Smolder had stopped hanging out with him when he started to focus on Cassie and their relationship. Aten didn't blame him, but he wish he still could have been included.

But there was no point in crying over spilled milk now. The past was in the past, and Aten had to focus on the future. His future.

Head held high, Aten kept his books tucked under his arm and started to head down the hall to the Library to study for a little while before calling it a night.

Life had gotten hectic, and most days Cassie was forgetting to check herself before she slid further down the rabbit hole. She was so close to getting out and the Fallen aspired for nothing more than to start her life at Grendel. Even if Smolder wasn't going to be there with her (she was able to still be herself and exist on her own, you know), at least she would feel back in her league. Everyone was getting so short and if she could say it, immature, that she desired to just be with "the big kids" again. She had taken almost everything the Academy had to off her, and short of self-teaching herself from volumes of the library, there wasn't a lot left to keep her mind entertained.

Cassie puttered about saying hello to a few familiar Nightmares in passing. She was being a good student today finally returning one of the last of her overdue books they had been hanging over her head. While the librarians were nice, she wasn't going to be missing their scowls anytime soon. The pink-winged Fallen went to pull open the library door, stepping to the side to hold it for the next behind her. She blinked, blue eyes wide. "Aten!"

She hadn't seen him in quite a while, the boy's shadow of a presence having grown more and more scarce. Cassie didn't exactly understand why, but she had to admit she wouldn't have realized it was him if it wasn't for the familiar pattern to his fur. Tilting her head up, she smiled wide as she continued to hold the door. "Long time no see. I see you're still at least the studious one, " she teased, recalling how they met.

Oh, by the Nine! It's CASSIE.

Aten had not expected to run in to Cassie. Perhaps it was naive of himself to assume he would always be able to escape her. But the Academy was smaller than it appeared, and he was bound to run in to her at some point.

"Cassie." Aten bowed his head to the now shorter Fallen. While his mind was panicking and his heart anxious, he kept his cool quite easily. "You look as lovely as I remember you. Have you been fairing well?"

Since Smolder left? Because I haven't. That's what he wanted to say, but he bit his tongue. He kept that hurt to himself and offered a cool, smooth smile. "Yes, my studies have always been important to me. Unlike a certain Fallen we both are acquainted with. I wonder how he is enjoying Asterion."

She chuckled a little. Cassie thought her stress showed well on her features. Figures Aten was polite enough not to comment on it. "You look good too," she returned, pushing her short locks back behind her ear. She needed to get a hair cut soon to make sure she was neat and tidy for the adult world. Aten did look good though, but as she watched his expression she couldn't help but read something a little off about him.

Cassie snorted at the mention of Smolder, falling into place beside Aten just inside the door way so that others could shuffle by. "He tells me he's enjoying it, but I always assume it's a cover for something," the pink-haired Fallen stated seriously, looking off to the side briefly. "Always something," she murmured with a slightly stern expression as if she had stories to tell. She brought her gaze back up to Aten still not used to this growth spurt he had. "You should come with me sometime," she offered with a genuine smile. "I usually go out after curfew once a week to catch up with him. Never seem to get enough time during our freedom hours."

The corner of Aten's mouth twitched visibly as he listened. His mouth had thinned in to a fine line, his jaw tightening with tension. So. They did still talk. That was more than Aten was getting. Once a week? When Aten tried to find time with Smolder he was told he was too swamped with lessons to make the commute to hang out, and so Aten had given up entirely.

"Well." he said, barely able to catch himself from sounding a bit bitter. "It pleases me that you too still find a way to hang out. If I don't contact Smolder myself, he doesn't engage me at all. It's a little frustrating ... but I've learned to just take what I can get." Aten shrugged. It was a hard transition for him. To go so many years being at Smolder's side to suddenly be without. He knew that the forced change had done him a world of good. But he still missed Smolder.

Taking in a deep, soothing breath, Aten let out a heavy sigh, letting his worries dissolve. "Did you want to catch up somewhere that isn't the hallway, perhaps?"

Cassie's expression was close to genuine sympathy. "Sorry, I can't rationalize everything about that boy," she sighed, not having anything to offer there. She felt bad for having mentioned it, but she did extend the offer. The pink-haired Fallen hesitated. Was she eating up all of Smolder's free time, or was it another reason?

As someone moved to slip past them, she nodded and took a step closer, reaching to squeeze Aten's bicep briefly. "If you have the time, I would love to," the Senior beamed, blue eyes bright as she changed her expression on a dime. The taller boy just seemed in a bit of a mood in general, and she did have a desire to catch up. "Just -" she turned, the green book she had been carrying still in her hand. She skirted around the crowd, opening her wings the slightest to part a few bumbling Juniors before sliding it into the return slot. Cassie chuckled as she came back, sweeping her bangs up with the back of her hand.

"Sorry," she offered. "I'm bad about returning them on time. Was proud of myself for getting here today so I didn't want to forget." Cassie turned on her heels, leaning back the slightest and letting her wings catch the air to keep her upright. "Do you have a place in mind?"

Aten glanced sidelong at his arm as Cassie's fingers reached out to brush him there before squeezing gently, staying perfectly still and quiet as she spoke to him. He waited for her to finish what she had to say, and had been about to open his mouth, lips parting subtly before she interrupted his thought, then darted off to return her book to the library.

He closed his mouth again, lips once again thinning as he watched, her pinks standing out against the dark teal carpeting of the library and the light browns of the wood finishing of the librarian's desk and book shelves. He breathed in slowly through his nose, looking a bit stoic. Perhaps he had judged Cassie too harshly. They were, after all, supposed to be friends, Aten and her. He knew, in his heart, he was treating her unfairly. He needed to relax. This was not, and never had been her fault. This was between Smolder and himself.

Before the Fallen returned, Aten was smiling again, This time fore more genuinely. His blue eyes seemed brighter, and less vacant. "I didn't really have anywhere in mind, no." he admitted as he resumed their conversation. "I don't get out of the Academy much. I would be content wherever we chose to spend time together, even if that just meant my dorm. Or yours." he smiled sweetly now. He knew he had missed Cassie. He was just. Still hurting. This would be fun, and it would be worth skipping studying.

She still looked bright, happy that Aten suddenly seemed more enthusiastic. Cassie didn't get much time to spend with friends as she had so few here in the Academy. She tilted her head, considering with a thoughtful stare somewhere over Aten's shoulder. "You don't want to see my dorm," she sighed, dragging her fingers through the short hairs at the back of her head. Mmm, yeah, nope. Cassie knew she was a messy person, and while her housemates had grown accustomed to her wild organizational system, it was slightly embarrassing. Especially the amount of meaningless mementos she had about. "Besides, Arkham rooms all look the same."

Cassie grabbed the strap to her bag, smiling a little as she properly relocated her gaze back to Aten's face. "How about just out in the courtyard? Exam season has everyone inside, it was pretty quiet out there before when I passed through." She began to walk, giving him time to object. She personally liked sitting up against any of the brick walls that enclosed the main courtyard, the noise drifting over while she remained out of sight to enjoy herself. "I'm being a hypocrite," she teased, "but it sounds a little like school has consumed your life."

The imp caught himself giving a crooked but still charming grin as he followed her. Her comment about being a hypocrite had amused him, but it had also resonated with him. Not just because of school life, but for other reasons as well. He tucked some of his hair behind one of his super floppy ears, then shoved his books back in to his bag that he had been holding under his arm, and gave a soft chuckle. "Truthfully, it has. Though there was a time I struggled with my schooling. Thankfully, that times seems to have ended." Aten said reassuringly, incase she worried.

"Yes, the courtyard sounds like a lovely idea. I love the found of the fountain, and the Herbalism class always has lovely gardens set up there. I'd like to join you there."

Aten shifted his bags to the other side of his body so that he did not run the risk of hitting Cassie with his bag. The last thing he needed was to bruise Cassie with his gait, bag demonstrating just by how it bumped against his hip as he strode forward. "Perhaps after we can grab a tea from the cafeteria when we want to warm up?"

Cassie held her tongue mostly to be polite. While she stressed herself about nothing, her issues with her classes was mostly just her being an obsessive perfectionist. Her natural, Fallen memory seemed to often work in her favor. She was just dumb enough to always push it to the limits. Struggling in class with class material had never really been a huge issue. "Hey, we're almost done," she offered encouragingly, the bright flare of I just want out of here! returning in her chest.

"Oh!" she offered at almost nothing as they stepped outside, looking up to Aten. Cassie was going to get a good crook in her neck wasn't she? "I wonder if my plants are still there. I did really well getting them to grow," the Fallen offered brightly, picking up the pace just the slightest. Mostly to keep up with Aten's stride and the other part in excitement as she was reminded of her time in Herbalism. As they neared the fountain, Cassie set her bag down at the base less than gracefully. As she had thought the courtyard was empty, and she had no qualms about walking away.

"Tea sounds great," she confirmed in almost a purr, turning on her heel as she walked backwards for a few brief steps. "But come admire my plants first." The pink haired Fallen chuckled to herself, dragging her hands over the edge of the planter once she reached it. With careful hands, she propped up one of the taller, leafy plants. Cassie's expression was almost maternal as she stooped. "I did a lot of the work on this garden," she sighed in slight frustration, tilting her head to the side. She couldn't even recall any of her classmates anymore, but all she knew was they didn't do much. "But this little bunch is all me. Shame they never flowered. Maybe I missed it."

She leaned back, glancing to the other planters. It seemed the other class had started their project too but she didn't dawdle long before drawing her gaze back to her own plants. "It's weird being in charge of a living thing," she commented out of almost no where. "But I'm happy I didn't at least doom them."

The courtyard was beautiful as always. The spraying waters from the fountains and the colours shimmering from the lights always put Aten at peace. The courtyard had been a good choice on Cassie's part. Why hadn't he thought of this before? it's not like he didn't spend a lot of time there himself.

Aten followed Cassie's lead and left his bag beside hers. He had been about to sit down to enjoy some conversation with his Fallen friend, but off Cassie went, and so he stopped squatting and straightening out immediately to follow after her.

She had lead him over to the garden, and he smiled down at the plants. Was one of them hers? Before he could ask, Cassie was almost beaming with pride. It made Aten smile. Her pride and positive nature was rather infectious. It set his worried mind completely at ease.

Aten leaned over to get a closer look at the plants she pointed out to him. Was she really responsible for all of them? Aten couldn't keep himself from laughing. "These turned out wonderfully! My first plant didn't really ... work out. I had a rapid growing vine as my first assignment, but it rapidly decayed instead. So I got a second chance, and ... well ... " Aten gestured to the small pot that Cassie had been looking at before. "The small little miniature one with the small, little flower bud is my second attempt. It seems to be doing well now."

Aten stood tall once more, clasping his claws together. "I know what you mean though. Being responsible for any sort of life ... a familiar, a plant, or for parents a child ... it's weird. But also very rewarding." He smirked then. "And not dooming them is half the battle. So good on you for not killing your plants." He frowned slightly then, just a small curve at the corner of his lips. "Like my first plant ... "

She tilted her head, placing her hands on her hips with closed fists. Cassie chuckled, immediately reaching up to cover her smile. "It happens. You still got something growing," she offered, admiring the stumpy plant of Aten's from afar. Cassie brushed her bangs up again, shaking her head the slightest. "In the end, the only rewarding thing here was a passing grade," she teased, looking to Aten before elbowing him the softest. He was mostly fur anyways and she wasn't even confident he felt it. "I honestly forgot I had even planted it."

The shorter Nightmare admired the Gardens for a moment more, hands returning to her hips. She pulled back her elbows, her stance relaxed. "Don't take a single plant as your track record," she chastised softly. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you want to get into the school as caretaker?" she put on a new smile, standing there for a moment longer before slowly turning and heading back for the fountain. Her wings stretched out once, the pink feathers scraping over a few of the bricks before she returned them, tucking them tight against her back as she sat on the edge of the fountain.

She puckered her lips briefly, a slightly apologetic expression falling over her features. "Honestly Aten, I don't know much about you other than second hand from Smolder," Cassie sighed, pulling her sweater tighter around her. "We need to fix that." While she had been pulling constant smiles the whole time, this one was warmer and encouraging.

"You heard about that, did you?" Aten questioned, rubbing at the spot of his fluff where Cassie had nudged him. He gave a sheepish smirk, turning to walk back to the fountain. He settled himself in, crossing one leg over the other and grabbing the sole of his boot.

"I suppose that's true, yunno. That one plant doesn't really change much." He shrugged easily. "One out of two ain't bad. And I suppose I should be proud of the one that succeeded, as dwarfed as it is."

Aten gave a small shake of his head as he thought on how much he actually knew about Cassie. Truth was, it was also second-hand from Smolder. He had never really taken the time to ask after her, and didn't hang out with her much outside of their little triad. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps it was time to remedy that. "Well." he started, letting his leg fall back to the ground. "Where should we start?"

She nodded a little in confirmation, tucking a longer lock behind her ear-tuft. "If you haven't caught on, I'm a bit nosy," Cassie admitted a bit sheepishly, moving to sit on her hands as Aten joined her at the fountain side. "I know a lot about lots," she chuckled, scrutinizing some of the Academy's facade for a moment with narrowed blue eyes.

"It's the little things," Cassie informed, more than happy to get behind that sentiment. Still seated with her hands tucked under her thighs, she tilted her head just the slightest to get a polite view of Aten. "Well, now it feels like an interview," she couldn't help but exhale through her nose at Aten's prompting, drawing a long blank on a good conversation piece.

"You suggested tea before," Cassie settled on, her wings shifting the slightest as they tried to keep out of the fountain's spray. "Good taste. Tea has gotten me through a lot of long nights before," she informed softer, leaning forward the slightest. "Self imposed and study imposed." Cassie shook her head sighing. "I'm positive my roommates will celebrate my graduation, honestly. Keeping them up all the time and occupying them with my mess."

She nudged his leg just briefly with her toe as she swung her short legs. "Fluffy, respectable Aten has to have some flaws up in there too," Cassie encouraged in a teasing tone in order to enforce she wasn't looking for some soul searching in response.

Aten couldn't help but to chuckle. As he had aged he had become one who never favored small talk. How's the weather? So about that weekend. He was always one to try and direct the conversation to some deeper level. But he supposed that in this case, where else were they to start? Smolder had been one of the main sources of conversation between them for so long that it was nice to get back to the roots. How else would they flourish?

"Yes, I do love tea. My favourite is green tea. In particular matcha. But I also rather like dragonwell and white teas are quite lovely too. And you can't go wrong with herbals." Aten had been about to go on a rant about all the health benefits of tea when he felt yet another nudge. This time it was his leg. He gave a amiable grin in return, reaching out to rub her shoulder affectionately.

"Of course I have flaws, Cassie." His grin subdued, becoming a sort of sheepish half-smile. "I have jealous issues. And can become quite the hermit if nobody checks on me. I get pretty lost in my head sometimes."
