Chel's lips formed a thin line at his assertions. If that was the case, why why-
A sound rumbled in one of the nearby alleys. Chel's eyes flicked back to Rajni; still asleep.
She gave Jack a look; we'll finish this later.

He inclined his head in turn and summoned Owain. The noise, as it turned out, came from a sole undying--one of the weaker ones too. It felt more like a convenient break in the conversation and an equally convenient target than it did a threat to the two unconscious girls they had to watch.

If Chel was being honest, she was glad for the break in the conversation. She wasn't sure what she was going to say, how to explain to Jack that the small, fixable parts weren't as concerning as the mental blocks that would never go away.
So she channeled her confusion into an arrow aimed straight at the creature's heart. ******** you zombies, ******** you.

Whether it was the precision strike or the fact that the arrow had already weakened it, Jack made mincemeat of the creature in seconds. A blip in the radar as far as he was concerned, barely able to mitigate his own inner conflicts. But at least it wasn't another shadow Jack.
He didn't push her back to the conversation just yet but nudged its corpse with his sword, watching as it dissipated and wondering if it might find something better than a ******** potato again this time.

Chel made a face. "Well don't just poke it." Seemed rude even if it was a creepy creation thing.
She gave his side a push, their usual strange "formation" for maximizing scanning; not quite back to back, but at least facing separate directions. An odd mirror to how they'd been sitting in the jeep.
"Anything out there?"

And of course, out of the oozing darkness came...another potato. Jack had to roll his eyes and curb the urge to kick it away.
"Not that I can see," he reported after scanning about. "That one was probably scavenging nearby when it heard you." Not accusing, merely stating.

"The arrows," he explained. "Otherwise, Finn is right, and I really am such an attractive legacy whore that even the minions come for miles."

Chel snorted and rolled her eyes excessively. Even if she was grumpy as all hell she wasn't without her sense of humor. Jack always knew which notes to hit.
"Then I'll stop," she said, desummoning Tenebrae. One more tiny annoyance, and it showed in the way she crossed her arm. Now she had nothing to vent with.

"Didn't say you had to," Jack said, though he did desummon Owain (a heavy blade was inconvenient to lug around with his strength sapped by the fog), "just that that was probably why it came over. Doesn't really matter if we try stealth, remember? This whole island is crawling with them, and honestly I could do with some more target practice while we're waiting."
That, and the more closed off her options, the less likely they'd ever get through this particular topic.
"Or we could trash a car. I think I saw some sad ********' Buggy over on the left."

Now that Jack was so gung ho about destroying things, she suddenly didn't want to. Very much like a cat that was interested in something until you were interested the thing and then she wasn't interested at all.
"Yer avoidin' it," she said with a sigh. "Let's check on the sleeper." Her nickname for the now passed out Rajni.

He was avoiding it? But he was just suggesting--Christ, nevermind.
"Did yours try taking a swing at you too?" Jack asked as he pocketed his hands and followed after her.

"Yeah," Chel said, stalking somewhere a couple of steps behind him. "Her name's some foreign bullshit so I just been callin' her scrappy," she explained.
From behind him he'd hear a small laugh and the words, "Dong ming."

"Dong," he began in that familiar irritable, slightly rapid fire lecturing tone, "meaning 'east' in Korean, similar to the Mandarin word dōng, which also means 'east', or dòng, a 'pillar' or 'beam' in the context of knowledge or understanding. Ming, from the Chinese míng, meaning 'clear-sighted' or 'shining' or 'bright' in the context of intellect, and also míng of a different script, 'engrave' or 'inscription' or 'to carve'. In short: one ******** brilliant man, lighting up the sky just as the sun does every morning from the east, who can carve his way through anything."
He'd lived long enough with that name to have researched it to its extent, barking out its linguistic roots as a young child to prove himself to his peers when they made fun. (What did he have to prove, though? What was in a name?) Jack almost didn't recognize how he had paraphrased his mother's own cheesy reasoning while doing so.
Scowling now, he ducked his head to check on Chel's charge. "Still unconscious."

"Don't stop it from meanin' d**k here," she said with a snicker.
She took his backside for her own in a hug, one maybe sorely needed as they both continued to avoid the earlier conversation (or rather, Chel continued to avoid and Jack understandingly played along).
"Yer a d**k too, so you get both meanings," she told him ruefully, rubbing her cheek on his shoulder blades. "Means I love dong either way." A short snicker, but a meaningful one.
