Feeling helpless, hopeless, and extremely tired, Joy Ann wandered the casino floor, eyes scouring the crowds for a friendly face. Why did everyone seem so excited and invigorated playing the casino games? All the counting and loud noises and confusion was awful, and all Joy Ann really wanted was a quiet place to sleep. While all the electricity and the lights were exciting at first, she was sorely missing her quiet, dark, open cell back at the prison where it would have been lights out and the air flowed freely through the bars instead of smelling like stale tobacco smoke.

Wait, was that-- It was! "Autumn!" Joy Ann sobbed with relief, finally spotting the cook amongst the crowd. Thankfully, she didn't seem to be interrupting a game or anything. It would have broken her heart to make Autumn lose some of her coins. "Autumn, I don't know how to gamble," the confession came gushing out of her mouth with more worried babbling to follow.

"They killed him, and told me I have to earn coins, but I've never gambled in my life." Sure, she had done okay at slots and broken even at Redking, but she didn't even have enough coins for half of her price. "I don't really understand what's going on and I don't think I want to and they have air-hand driers in the bathroom. Air hand driers!" Yes, Joy Ann was clearly losing it, but it wasn't her fault. The electricity they needed for the hand driers had clearly made an impression on her.

Autumn was standing there, stunned. She now knew what those 'deer in the headlights' felt like. To stand there and see it coming. This was it, these flashing lights and loud noises. This was to be her end.

A voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Joy Ann!" Autumn smiled in spite of herself. It was good to see Joy Ann was alive...but at the same time terrible to see she was here. Autumn knew most everyone would be coming here, perhaps, but it didn't make it any less worse.

"Of course they killed him." She'd watched them kill two. Autumn thought she might throw up thinking about it. "They'll do more than that." She said this last part quietly.

"Hand dryers? Air hand dryers?" Joy Ann's odd statement almost brought Autumn out of her own daze. "I'm sorry but, what?" She looked around, things slowly falling into place in her mind. (Well. She still had no idea why Joy Ann was talking about hand dryers.) "And what do you mean you don't know how to gamble? You HAVE to gamble. You have to leave."

Joy Ann paused in her babbling as Autumn questioned where the conversation was heading. "Um... You know, those hand driers that use air, instead of having paper towels? They have those in the bathroom." She paused, replaying her words in her head, and then realized she probably wasn't making sense still. "They use a lot of electricity... It's amazing..." Yeah, on second thought, it probably wasn't as amazing as she'd first thought. It was odd how details stuck with certain people in certain ways.

As for not gambling, where was the confusing part of that? "I mean, I've never played any of these games before. The only bet I've ever made was with my friend Janey, and that was about whether Michael Donner was going to kiss Maria Holstrum by the end of summer camp or not." For the record, Joy Ann had lost that bet, because Janey was right, Michael had totally liked Vikki Sato instead. Joy Ann was usually wrong when it came to judging men (or boys, as the case back then was).

"I'm not going to leave," she said quietly, thumbing her price tag without realizing she was doing it. "I cost too much, and I only made a few coins at the loud number machine with the lever. I won one hand of redking, but then I lost two, and... I'm too much. I'm just going to give my coins to you and Shaun. It's better that way."

Her eyebrows drew together as Autumn's mind separated words into things that made sense. "Oh. Right. Air dryers for hands..." She got that much but -OH. "Oh. Right." Autumn was having trouble using her full vocabulary. "Electricity."

She looked around. "This place must use a lot of electricity." For air hand dryers, slot machines, and other things. Autumn had to swallow another knot of nerves at the thought.

"Oh. I see." She really didn't know what to make of Joy Ann's explanation. "How did that bet go? Did Micheal kiss Mary?" It was important to know that Joy Ann knew how to gamble, even if Autumn wasn't sure she had the names right.

But then Autumn was shaking her head her eyes growing wide. "No. No. You keep your coins. You earn enough to leave." She looked down at Joy Ann's collar. "I cost more than you do. And Shaun? Have you seen Shaun? Is he here, too?"

She took Joy Ann by the shoulders. "You both have to leave. We all have to leave." She leaned in to whisper, and a hint of panic might have snuck into her voice. "Do you know what they do to people here?"

It definitely used a lot of electricity, and Joy Ann really was curious about where it all came from. Heck, their collars probably used electricity too. She turned hers over in her hand, looking for a battery door. Hmm, there were screws. Too bad she didn't have a screwdriver, though she doubted it would be that simple.

Joy Ann frowned for a moment, sending her mind back to that long ago summer camp to remember what had actually happened. She knew she had lost the bet, but she couldn't quite remember... Ah, that was right. "No, he kissed Vikki," she admitted, letting the memory go as soon after she retrieved it. She had a lot of memories she was trying to avoid right then, but luckily that wasn't one of them. "I lost, because I really thought he liked Maria..." she mumbled, leaving the memory alone, although she did kind of wonder what she had lost in the bet. Oh well, it didn't matter now.

Finally! Someone who cost more than she did! Joy Ann's eyes widened at the sight of the taller woman's tag. Cooks must have been in high value here, what with all the fancy food going around. "I think he's here, I mean, most of us came over together, didn't we..?" Her memories of coming to the casino were getting mixed up. She remembered something about Autumn saying that they had to be useful, but... No, it was all a blur.

As Autumn leaned closer, Joy Ann's eyes widened even further. The panic in her friend's voice was making hers kick back in, and she didn't even fully understand what was going on. "N-no... But they s-shot him. I chose him be-because he was like Shaun. S-so so young. And I didn't l-look, but th-they s-shot h-him. I-I h-heard it." She shuddered, tears starting to roll down her cheeks again. She hadn't questioned, she hadn't done anything to them, and yet here she was, trapped with not enough coins for a game she hadn't even asked to play. And they'd shot him. Were they going to shoot her and Autumn too?

Autumn nodded. "Oh, that's too bad." She didn't know what to say. "Hopefully we won't be betting on kisses here."

She found herself looking around again. Part scared rabbit and part... no, it was mostly scared rabbit.

"He should be here," Autumn said, nodding, referring to Shaun. "But I hope he isn't. Keep an eye for him though." Poor Shaun. Autumn hated to think about what might happen to them all... but mostly her friends.

A wave of sadness and nausea washed over Autumn as Joy Ann told her story about the boy being shot. They'd killed more, then? She wasn't surprised.

One hand reached out to pat Autumn's shoulder. "I didn't see them shoot anyone. But, but..." Should she say it? Could she say it? Had it even been real? "Joy Ann, I think they mean to kill us. And... and... cut us up. Into pieces for... " Autumn had to swallow again, fighting the urge to cry. Joy Ann was already crying and if they both broke down they'd draw attention. Autumn didn't want attention. She wanted to leave.

"It's not pretty. And I think we're cattle." There. She'd said it. Autumn shuddered and told herself it wasn't a dream. Even if she wished it were.

Yeah, with her judgment, betting on kisses would definitely go awry. She would be even worse at that than she was at redking.

Good, so the evil casino people hadn't shot Shaun. Joy Ann wiped her sleeve across her teary, snotty face, trying to get herself back together. The crying had released some of the panicked feelings, and it wasn't like she could bring the boy back to life. He wasn't Shaun, and Shaun was the one she really wanted to help protect. He was going to be respectable.

Joy Ann didn't really register what Autumn was saying and instead just nodded along. Her brain didn't have enough experience with the horrors of the world to fully understand the implications of Autumn's words. However, they had made it pretty clear that they would kill her if she didn't get enough coins, but whether that was by shooting or being cut up, both were pretty gruesome. As for cattle, they were all packed into the room and they all had price tags on them, so that analogy was understandable on that level.

Sniffling once more as she wiped her face again, Joy Ann reached out to tug on Autumn's sleeve. "Will you help me find Shaun? I don't want him to be alone." Even though he was probably faring much better than she was... It was more that she didn't want to be without him. If she could guarantee his safety, well... That was something, wasn't it?

Her brown eyes started scanning the crowds again. Now that she had Autumn, they could find Shaun together, and that was definitely something.

Autumn tried to smile, she really did. Whether or not it worked she'd never be sure. Try to smile, blink back the tears, take a deep breath, and tell herself not to vomit. Autumn could do those things. She was doing them. Perhaps some better than others but she was trying.

She was rather glad that Joy Ann didn't press the issue about being cut up or being cattle. She didn't want to explain what she'd seen. She was still trying to unsee it. It was all a nightmare, after all. A real nightmare.

She almost flinched when Joy Ann tugged on her sleeve. Nerves. But she also nodded. "Yeah. He shouldn't be alone in this. Let's start looking."
