Who: Ian, Justin, and Aadhira When: August 25th, 2015; Mid-afternoon Where: Justin's home in Gambino Weather: Warm and sunny, but with a slight breeze
Ian ran his hand through his hair as he sat in his car, looking at the screen of his cell phone. He'd mapped out the route to Justin's house, but had somehow managed to get lost in the last few minutes of his journey. He couldn't find the right house number, despite two passes along the street. Perhaps his nerves were getting the better of him? Justin had mentioned that his Raevan had been born, after all, and Ian was eager to see and meet the newborn.
Sure enough, he'd driven right past the house multiple times. Embarrassed, Ian took a few moments in his car to calm himself down and try to figure out how he would greet not only Justin, but Aadhira. That's the name Justin had mentioned in their texts; he prayed he was saying it right. He climbed out of his car with the Lab briefcase and a small gift bag in tow, and fussed with the wrapping paper as he approached the front door. He felt he should get the new Raevan a welcome home gift of some sort, but he knew very little about him. Would he like it? Was this a weird thing to do?
With a deep breath he knocked on the door, trying not to look too uncomfortable or awkward as he waited. This wasn't even his Raevan, but he was arguably just as excited as he had been when he'd first received the briefcase. He'd essentially been with Justin through the whole process, even if they rarely hung out. He knew how excited and anxious the man had been waiting for Aadhira to arrive, and had apparently been harboring his own nerves as well.

For once, when the knock came, Justin didn't jump out of his skin. This was quite possibly because he had a fair idea of who it was. He and Ian had been texting back and forth near incessantly (Well, at least on his part) since he got Aadhira although Justin deliberately hadn't sent any pictures of the raevan; he wanted Ian to be somewhat surprised. Aadhira was not exactly pleased - he had quite quickly discovered the concept of a selfie and, when he wasn't being lazy, loved to take pictures of himself and other things. Justin's favorite picture was the one of Aadi and the blender. Right now, the raevan was draped across the couch, eyes glued intently on the Food Network. They were still working out what exactly he ate, and the raevan insisted he wasn't hungry, but Justin worried. "Aadi, we have company. He's like your godfather or something." Aadhira abruptly straightened, going from a messy lounge to a respectable sitting position. New people were important, and he needed to look his best. Justin, however, was different. With Justin, Aadhira had decided there was no point and no need to present a picture perfect angle of himself. Justin was his, after all. And while he had no idea what a god father was, he peered expectantly at the door. Would there be... wings? A halo of fire? Is that what 'god' meant? The man of Aadhira's thoughts snorted at the change and opened the door. It was, at least, exactly who he'd thought. "Hey, Ian, I'm glad you came by - come in." Justin beamed. He was excited that the other man, too, was going to become a guardian. The single father's club, or something. In the meantime, Aadhira had sunk down a little in the bottle green couch, so that only the top of his head and eyes peered over the back of it. They glowed intently.

Ian smiled brightly when Justin finally answered the door. It was good to see his friend in person again; they'd texted and snapchatted while Justin away with his family, but hadn't had a chance to meet up since he returned. It was partially Ian's fault, living in Barton and working almost every day of the week, but he didn't mind too much. Justin had new responsibilities now, as well.
He shuffled into the house quietly, keeping himself relatively small. He always felt a bit awkward in new places, especially other people's homes. This was a private space after all, and he didn't live here. He hoped in time that he would become more comfortable, and Justin in his home as well. Perhaps Aadhira and his own Raevan could become playmates in the future...
"Hey Justin, thanks for having me. How've you been?" He smiled, glancing toward the couch where he could see a new face peeking over the back. Dark skin and dark hair broken up by bright, glowing eyes. That made sense; Justin's essence had glowed, but Ian had had no idea what that could mean. Clearly the essence contributed to the Raevan's appearance. He could already tell from this distance that Aadhira was a stunning Raevan, and quite different from others he'd seen in the past.
He tried to appear calm and friendly, even holding up the gift bag as a peace offering. "You must be Aadhira. My name is Ian, I'm Justin's friend. I've brought you a present," he murmured. He didn't move closer to the couch, but did glance at Justin with an excited grin. They could talk more about Aadhira and what Justin had been up to after first impressions were out of the way.
Inside the teal and blue bag (picked out carefully after a bit of information from Justin) was a teddy bear-sized squishy toy, shaped like a bird. Ian had picked it out specifically because it glowed when squeezed, as well. It was meant for children afraid of the dark, but he'd figured Aadhira might appreciate the glow.

"Been...good, busy obviously." He ran a hand through his perpetually messy hair. "We haven't hung out in forever - way too long, flower prince." Suddenly, Aadhira spoke, his voice calm, as thought stating a fact of nature. "You do not have a halo, fathergod Ian." And while it was true that Ian had no halo nor wings, he was interesting enough in his own right. Aadhira floated a little higher. "A-Aadhira, that's not what... I meant..." Justin looked helplessly at Ian, and if Ian was observant, he would see a flush darken Justin's cheeks. Godfather had been presumptuous, surely. But, in the time that Justin had spoken, and spluttered, Aadhira had moved out from behind the ouch and floated closely to Ian, smiling charmingly. "For me? Thank you, Ian!" While Aadhira knew that a bright thank you was the most acceptable reply, he did truly feel it. The raevan took the gift gingerly, carefully not to squish it. He had received many, many things since coming here, but this would be among the first from someone besides Justin. Tribute. He wondered if Ian was a prince as well. Justin sometimes called him prince, and he had just called Ian 'flower prince'. Carefully, he carefully pulled out the tissue paper, smoothing it and folding it. Then, finally, he held the toy. And, impulsively, he squished it. "Ian, what have you been up to? Busy?" He ushered Ian to sit on the couch - Aadhira had co-opted the one armchair for his gift explorations. "Do you want a drink or anything? We-" His sentence was interrupted by a loud gasp from Aadhira. Justin turned and watched as Aadhira squeezed the toy several times in succession, clearly delighted in the glow.

Ian hadn't had any time to contemplate the term 'fathergod,' as Aadhira's sudden approach had startled him and thoroughly captured his attention. The raevan was striking, all blues and greens and darkness but also light. He found himself staring, and did his best to correct it with a friendly smile as Aadhira took the gift bag. After just these few moments, Ian could tell Aadhira would be quite the charmer and no doubt quite the handful for Justin. "You're welcome."
As Aadhira floated away with the present, Ian followed Justin to the couch. "Uh no, I'm fine, thanks." He chuckled, running a hand through his curls and shrugging a shoulder. "Um... Not much, really. But I did get this in the mail a couple weeks ago." He looked down at the briefcase in his lap, unable to help the boyish excited grin spreading across his face. He carefully undid the clasps and opened it up, turning it so Justin could see the bottles inside. "I got accepted."
He figured he should probably warn Justin before he did any eager exploring. "The essence is uh... parasitic cherry blossom. It drains energy to stay alive, so... I'm not supposed to handle it for too long." He recalled the nasty headache he'd gotten the first time he'd held it for too long. He was still a little disappointed he couldn't look at or be around it like others no doubt could with their essences, but it wasn't too bad.

"Congratulations!" The idea that his friend, too, had been accepted and would become a father (for lack of a better word) excited him. Justin's hand had already been inching forward when Ian's warning registered. "Parasictic?" He blinked. "Sounds kind of dangerous. Are you aiming for a particular soul?" "I want to touch it," Aadhira popped up behind Ian, still clutching the glowing toy. "Let me."

Ian's smile brightened a moment when Justin congratulated him. It felt nice to be on even ground again with him, though it had never really been a competition in the first place. It was more like... kinship. They had something in common aside from their social anxieties. He hoped that Justin and Aadhira would continue to be involved in this new part of his life, and the life of his future Raevan.
"A soul? Oh, um... I hadn't thought about specifics yet, so no. But- the idea of taking something's soul isn't exactly... ideal-" He was both startled and cut off by Aadhira's sudden reappearance. Balking, he glanced over his shoulder at the brilliantly colored Raevan. He faltered for a moment because of the simple sense of awe in his chest - he hadn't gotten used to him yet.
The request to touch the blossoms was met hesitantly, and Ian glanced at Justin uncertainly. He wasn't sure if he was working on Aadhira's manners, but figured it wasn't his place to intervene. "I-I'm not so sure it's a good idea." If it made an ordinary human so unsettled after a bit of interaction, he wondered what it would do to a Raevan. It could just as easily not affect Aadhira at all, or drain him much more than a human. A fel essence was much more related to a Raevan than a human, after all. "You can look, though." He carefully lifted the jar out of its foam outline, holding it up so the light could hit the blossoms for Aadhira to see.

"You have to ask, Aadi. Nicely," Justin sighed. Aadhira stiffened slightly, not out of offense at Justin's reminder, but out of the realization that he had not been trying actively to be polite or get on Ian's good side. Slowly, Aadhira floated around to drift in front of Ian. He bowed slightly. "My excitement got the better of me; I apologize." It was a little stiff, but he softened his tone with a blinding smile. "I don't think it would hurt me to touch it - I am of its kind, after all." Aadhira looked closely at the cherry blossoms, fingers clearly itching to touch it if for no other reason than he had been forbidden. While the essence would have been interesting regardless, sine he was not to touch it, that was all he wanted to do. If Ian still said no, Aadhira would find a way to sneak in and place his finger on the undoubtedly cool glass, regardless. He hated being denied. "As for souls, Ian, maybe you can find a rock? Or a plant, you have lots of plants around and it wouldn't be so bad." Justin, unlike Aadi, had no desire to touch it, remembering what had happened to Luka. He kept his hands to himself. "Aadhira was a peacock by happenstance. I wonder if you can really plan these things...."

Ian glanced at Justin again uncertainly, but caved and gently pulled the jar out of its little foam nest in the briefcase. "Well, okay. But not for too long, I wouldn't want it to tire you out." He offered the blossoms to Aadhira before turning his attention back to Justin.
"Yeah, maybe. I'm not sure how well it would take to another plant, but the cloth is green, so..." He sighed and shrugged his shoulders again. The mention of Justin's rather accidental soul capture pulled a chuckle out of the florist and he ran a hand through his copper curls. "Yeah, I wonder. It's probably easier to plan something inanimate, like a rock or a plant. But like- Actively capturing the soul of a living thing, I just don't know... Maybe something will happen and I'll get lucky." He'd like to imagine the creature's soul would be given willingly, but he supposed - knew - it was much more likely to be accidental. Dealing with that would be another hurdle to jump. But looking at Aadhira now, he knew that all of this struggle and anxiety would be worth it in the end.

Aadhira took the glass jar, a pleased smile flitting across his face. It never was too hard to get what he wanted, after all, and this just confirmed it. But now that he had it, did he really want it? Resisting the urge to juggle the glass, he held it up to the light, turning it this way and that. The jar even received a small, surreptitious shake when Ian wasn't looking. The idea that this small sprig of flower could become someone like him was odd, to say the least. Now it was nothing more than a wish and a song and some petals that would never droop. "I hope you become a queen," he whispered fiercely at it. It had, after all, been held by him and should be no less. A princess seemed somehow... wrong for this smattering of flowers and Aadhira could not say why. Justin laughed a little. "I was aiming for a rock, at first. Didn't work out, obviously. I feel like most people have unplanned souls." He jiggled his leg out of habit. "I think that, in some ways, this is better - the bird would have died anyway. This is its second life, for lack of a better phrase." He looked sheepishly at Ian, afraid that this was an odd line of thought.

Ian watched Aadhira with the jar for a moment, a strange sense of protectiveness welling in his chest. He knew that the peacock wouldn't hurt it on purpose, not at all, but it was such a fragile thing that he couldn't help a flash of worry. Not to mention he didn't want Aadhira getting hurt or anything, considering how he'd gotten such a raging migraine the first time.
He heard Aadhira's wish and smiled, wondering the same as well. At this point he had no idea what the raevan would look like, if they would be a girl or a boy, and so on. He figured the soul would have a lot to do with it as well.
"Oh, I'm sure. Deliberately choosing to kill something like that would be... really hard." He listened as Justin explained what had happened with Aadhira's soul, the accidental nature of its capture. "Yeah, that's a good way of thinking about it. Not just- ending a life, but... creating a new one." He looked down at the empty round bottle in his briefcase, hoping that the circumstances would at least work out that nicely in the end.

Aadhira wondered if she would, or he (but it felt like a girl and Aadi didn't particularly like princes - competition), would remember the way he held her up to the light. Likely not, which was disappointing. Even Aadi did not remember the times when he was only half of himself and trapped in glass like some precious little ship. Such a shame that she would not know of him until later. A phrase ran through his head, and he dismissed it as some fancy of Justin's.
In place of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen! Not dark, but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea! Stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me, and despair! Aadhira held the bottle a little tighter, feeling the urge to sit. He draped himself across an armchair.
"I'm sure you'll think of something, Ian. I know it's hard not be anxious over it, but something will happen and then you'll have a wonderful raeven in your life." And that, Justin thought, was that. "I know it's hard not to dwell on it - do you wanna just hang out - take your mind off of it for a bit? If you get too tense, you'll explode." Justin gestured at Aadhira in a clear attempt to take back the bottle.
"I will hold it a little longer," Aadhira said, clasping the bottle in both hands. If he grew tired, well, then a nap would be in order later.

When Aadhira sank into one of the chairs in the living room, Ian glanced over at him. Was the essence draining him? He hoped not, or if it was that he wouldn't be too affected. He'd hate to make a bad impression on the peacock just for bringing his essence. Though from the looks of things he seemed very fond of the little jar, and even denied Justin's silent request to hand it over.
"Yeah, hopefully. I don't doubt they'll be amazing regardless, but..." He glanced down at the empty round bottle again, the leaflike pattern on the cloth tied around it. "I don't want to mess this up, you know?" He laughed.
At the offer of hanging out for a while, he hesitated. It wasn't that he didn't want to, but... Being around others without a specific mission wasn't exactly his strong suit. He tended to flounder awkwardly in those situations. But he'd spent enough time with Justin in the past that he figured it would be okay. "Uh, sure. How about, um... Will you show me one of those- rpg games? I've never quite figured them out."

"Hey, I've got faith in you, you know?" Justin placed a hand on his shoulder briefly before standing up and wandering to the game closet. "And sure, which, by the way, if it's boring you can tell me to switch to another - I don't mind." He grabbed a few and knelt in front of the tv to insert a disc.
"Play the one with the aliens," Aadhira said lazily.

Ian let out a soft, grateful laugh as Justin's sentiments. "Thanks. It's good to know someone thinks I can do it," he chuckled, his tone just slightly self-deprecating.
He watched as Justin started to sift through his collection of games - a rather impressive one at that. Ian had a few of his own, of course, but nothing that could compare to Justin's hoard. Most of his were also for the handheld console he had at home, and for his older system he'd gotten after finishing college. A PS2, maybe...? It was black, that was all he could remember at the moment. Most of his own games were racing- or puzzle-based, and not nearly as in-depth as the RPGs he'd heard Justin played. He'd always been curious, but they looked rather overwhelming; there were so many things going on with the screen at the same time.
"Aliens? That sounds cool." Once Justin got the game started, Ian mostly watched for a while as Justin handled the setup and introduced him to the controls. There was a bit of fumbling for a while, mispressed buttons and accidental deaths, but he was slowly getting the hang of it. They ended up playing for quite a while, but took a break to put the essence bottle away when Aadhira seemed a bit too tired. It was a bit embarrassing to be ousted as so horrible at video games, but Ian had fun nonetheless.
He hoped that his raevan, when they arrived, would be able to find such friendship with the others.
