(Original Approved Quest Thread)

Name: Eris Livius

Race: Geist

Zodiac Sign: The Lyre - The Enthusiast

Academy House: Arkham

Gender: Female

Starting Stage: Freshling

Body Type Base: B

Description:
  • Body: She's pretty plain and lacking in markings except for black outlines around her eyes like mascara.
  • Eyes: Her sclera are white and her irises the same yellow as here.
  • Hair: Long, waist-length black hair with two small, short pigtails at the top of her head and layered locks that drape over her shoulders (please see colored ref pic)
  • Clothes: - Fashion: Dark & neutral colors, cute clothing, Gothic Lolita fashion, dresses, and skirts. She loves dresses and skirts. Also, she tends to wear black lipstick.

    - Clothing: Can be as simple as the dress she has on in her colored reference picture or anything else. This can be up to the artist, though a dress and/or skirt would be much preferred.

    - Accessories: If possible, a crystal technology camera? (Perhaps an equivalent of a Polaroid camera; something that takes instant/candid pictures?) One with a strap that she can sling across her shoulders or around her neck?

References:
Note: Eris is based on an old ghost pokemorph character. The ones below are by me. Please ignore the 'horn' on her head - it's just a feature of the ghost pokemon she was based off of, Shuppet. As a Nightmare, she would also have legs and the wispy tendrils characteristic of geists on her limbs. I do not mean for her to be a cosplay of the pokemon at all; I am simply taking the essence of her character as a ghost/geist along with her personality and interpreting it into the Nightmare Academy shop setting.

General Description: Eris fits her Zodiac sign, the Lyre, very well. She sees the world and life as a game and an endless opportunity for entertainment as long as one knows where to look. Rarely serious or solemn in demeanor, this Geist is cheerful, energetic, outgoing, playful, and friendly. However, she is also something of a prankster, superficial, manipulative, impulsive, and irresponsible.

Personality:
(+) Extroverted - Just like her Zodiac sign, Eris is very extroverted and loves meeting others. She tends to be a bit superficial, so she doesn't really stick close to anyone in particular, but this allows her to drift and make the acquaintance of everyone she can rather than sticking to one particular clique or group of Nightmares.

(-) Superficial - Due to her constant smiles and frequent terms of endearment toward everyone (sweetie, darling, honey, etc.), it's fairly easy to get along with Eris, but it's not all that easy to get to know her. As she doesn't stay in one place or with one group of people for too long, she doesn't usually spend much time chatting. When she does, it's usually about others and general school gossip rather than herself.

(+) Energetic - Eris moves from place to place in search of fun and excitement. One minute she'll be somewhere and the next minute she'll be gone. Drawing from what seems like an endless supply of energy, this Nightmare is constantly cheerful, smiling, and optimistic, even when others around her might seem gloomy. She talks quickly and is always on the lookout for something new and interesting. This Geist loves snapping candid pictures with her camera and just can't seem to sit still.

(-) Prankster - Eris has the bad habit of popping up in places and at times when people least expect it. She enjoys playing harmless tricks every now and then, but will back off if she is made to understand that her tricks cause more harm than she realizes.

(+) Playful - Sometimes it's no fun to do things unless she can share them with others. Occasionally Eris will let someone in on a prank or she'll take a picture of a couple to tease them without any ill will. She does not make fun of people with any mean thoughts in mind and has a generally friendly attitude toward everyone.

(-) Manipulative - Despite her cheerful attitude, this Nightmare does have a darker side to her. She may not see it as dark, though, because she has a difficult time understanding when her teasing of someone can go too far. She might unconsciously manipulate a guy into carrying her books for her by complimenting him on his big muscles, for example. When she does something like threaten to tell a girl's crush about their secret love, though, she does so with a playful attitude because she doesn't understand how hurtful the results of her actions can be. If said girl were brought to tears over the idea or Eris were made to understand the full impact of her threat on the girl in some other way, she would likely back off.

Favorite things: Her crystal-technology camera (that snaps instant pictures as an equivalent of a Polaroid camera) which is her most valuable and also most treasured possession.

Hobbies: Taking photos of others, listening in on and spreading the latest gossip, roaming the school to look for new entertainment, finding new places to hide, practicing her abilities, setting up pranks, and making new acquaintances or friends

Abilities: (Later on in life; not as a Freshling), mostly just her racial abilities of going intangible at will, though she is also rather skilled with her camera, making friendly acquaintances, being stealthy, being persuasive, getting what she wants, staying on top of the latest news and events, eliciting emotions from others, and being optimistic. She is working very hard on learning the skill of becoming invisible so that she can improve her stealth and take even more interesting pictures.

Likes: Crystal technology, though she'll mostly just stick to her camera, thanks. She also loves fashion and cute clothes, particularly that of the lolita goth style. Parties and social events are also a huge source of joy for Eris. She loves teasing other Nightmares, too, and sticking her nose in their business.

Dislikes: She dislikes being alone, being told what to do, being made to adhere to the rules, and being pinned down by responsibility. She also avoids commitment, boredom, monotony, regret, and guilt. Talking about the future or other serious aspects makes her uneasy.

Motivation: Honestly, Eris' motivation is pretty simple - keep from being bored, have fun, learn about others, get them to express different emotions, and take pictures of said emotions to relish them forever. She doesn't have any big plans or long-term goals to work toward because she doesn't like to think about the future. Commitment, responsibility, and anything else that requires too much thought and seriousness are major turn-offs for her. All she wants to use school for is to socialize and enjoy herself.

Effect of Life at the Academy on Personality: I don't believe this Geist is going to allow the Academy to affect her much. She gets lonely if she's left alone, so she flits among many different groups without ever sticking to one group or individual. Thus, she keeps everything superficial, light, and friendly between her and everyone else; refusing to take sides if there's a quarrel, but all too ready to stand by and watch. She will likely love the dorm environment and spending time with so many other Nightmares, especially because she doesn't have a family of her own. Eris wouldn't long for a family, though, because with family comes restrictions, rules, and commitment, so as things are, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Fit into Academy House: Due to her favorite hobby of taking pictures of Nightmares, Eris fits in fairly well at the House of Arkham. Because they are focused primarily on the arts, the geist girl enjoys classes involving her skills with photography. She can also put to use her love of fashion and her creativity in finding new and interesting ways to sneak up on people. With her optimistic attitude and ability to find various methods to get what she wants despite obstacles or setbacks, her creativity is constantly being exercised. As Arkham values creativity above all else, Eris feels quite at home here, especially while learning about and feeding off the creativity of her fellow Arkham students.

Feelings on Race: As an Orphan Geist from the Cache, Eris did not grow up exclusively around her race, but she has still always felt a strong affiliation with them. She understands and agrees with more of her Race's ideals than any other. Also in accordance with the Geists' culture, Eris doesn't like being alone. It hasn't been as difficult for her to grow up an Orphan, though, because despite being raised among many other races, at least she's surrounded by fellow Nightmares. She usually associates well with other Geists, both mentors and students alike. Eris isn't sure where she wants to live or what she wants to do with her life eventually, but she plans to deal with that when she has to rather than concern herself with the future.

Background So Far: Eris grew up as one of the numerous Orphans from the Cache, born and raised in the Asphodel Gardens. Not realizing that she or the other Orphans were different from any other Nightmare, the Geist was happy. Eventually she found out that most Nightmares outside of the Academy had families and parents, but having never known her own, she found it hard to long for or miss them. All that mattered to her was that she wasn't alone.

From an early age, the Nightmare found pleasure in watching others. She loved the way their faces changed and was content to simply observe them, though when invited to join in a game or other activity, she readily accepted. Eris grew fascinated with different emotions and how each Nightmare physically expressed them, whether through a smile, a frown, or narrowed eyes. Though quick to make friends, Eris also became quick to lose them when she purposely did things to see their faces change. She couldn't understand why friends stopped wanting to be friends and was so hurt by each broken friendship that eventually she stopped interacting with others altogether.

After some help and a very special gift from a Geist mentor (please see 'Influential Past Event' below), Eris overcame her fear of losing friends and managed to make new ones again. This time she learned how to interact with them better and was more careful not to unnecessarily upset them. If she did happen to upset others, she quickly picked up how to properly apologize and make it up to them to be sure they knew she meant no malice or harm.

At this point, the Geist also taught herself not to get too close to any one individual or group of Nightmares because one never knew when they would turn on them or leave them. She didn't want to be dependent on anyone else, but she didn't want to be left all by herself either, so she learned to make the acquaintance of and be friendly with many different Nightmares as opposed to a few.

Influential Past Event: During the time that Eris decided to stop interacting with others and chose to simply watch them instead, a couple of older Nightmares complained about her to a Geist adult in charge. Evidently, she had been spying on them while the pair had been having an intimate discussion and they were angry by the invasion of their privacy. As Eris hadn't known what was wrong with watching them, she hadn't made much effort to conceal herself.

The Geist adult took Eris aside and asked her why she liked watching people. He explained to her that most Nightmares found it unnerving to be stared at, especially for long periods of time. Eris informed him that she had only been trying to memorize the peculiar expression on the couple - it seemed they had been blushing - because she had never seen such faces on anyone before.

Her mentor laughed and told her that people didn't normally make those faces in public because they were embarrassing (a concept that Eris, at the time, didn't understand and wanted to know more about). He also knew that the younger Geist was having trouble making friends when once she had gotten along so well with other Nightmares and realized that her habit of voyeurism must have put them off. In exchange for ceasing her habit of staring at others, the adult Geist promised to help her solve her problems.

The next day, Eris was presented with a crystal technology camera that she was told was very expensive and that she should take very good care of. Her mentor showed her how to use it and said that with it, she no longer had to memorize faces or stare at other Nightmares for long periods of time. Instead, she could just take a quick picture and she would have their image to keep forever.

The Geist girl was so pleased with her new gift that, despite her young age, it took her almost no time at all to figure out the new technology. She was very, very careful with it and cherished it as her most treasured possession - not because it was expensive, but because of what it did for her. Thanks to her new camera and the help of her Geist mentor, she was able to overcome her fear of losing friends.

She managed to make new ones in no time and was careful not to stare at them for too long in the case she started to make them uncomfortable. Moreover, Eris learned not to invest too much in friends and chose to make a lot of superficial friendships rather than only a few close ones. That way, even if others turned on her or grew apart, she could move on without being lonely.

Her philosophy regarding friendship is as follows:

Make new friends
and keep them such.

Never let them
know too much.

For when thy friend
becomes thy foe,

All the world
thy secrets know.

RP Prompt
Oh no! Your Nightmare has lost something that is very dear them! What have they lost, and how do they react?

It was gone. Gone! No matter where Eris looked, no matter how far she back-tracked, she couldn’t find her precious camera! It was state-of-the-art crystal technology, too! She had promised her mentor that she would take very, very good care of it and so far she had. Until today.

Back-tracking, the Freshling Geist knew she had had the camera with her at least until lunch time. After that, she had been so busy zipping from place to place and chatting that she forgot where she might have left it. Searching all the rooms she had been in since she’d last seen it – and that had been a lot of rooms – Eris began to realize that even if it had been found, the chances weren’t very high that someone would turn it in. It was a very expensive piece of technology, after all.

At the end of the school day, it was all the Nightmare could do not to cry as she sadly headed back to the cafeteria. She flopped down at the empty lunch table where she had last remembered having had her treasure with her and buried her face in her arms. She wasn’t going to cry. She wasn’t.

Eventually, the young student heard someone enter the cafeteria. She was vaguely aware of said person coming up to the table and standing beside it. At last her curiosity forced her to look up. It was a young Fallen, a boy. He stared at her impassively for a minute before adopting a crooked grin.

“Missing something?” he asked, holding up a hand. In it, he gripped the strap of her camera as well as the camera itself.

“My camera!” she cried, sitting up with a jolt. Eris reached for her favorite possession, but the Fallen boy held it just out of her reach. The Geist inclined her head in confusion.

“Finders, keepers,” he told her, his grin darkening. “Losers, weepers. You’re a Geist, aren’t you? You guys steal stuff all the time. You know how it works.”

Eris felt her face grow hot as she fought to control her rising temper. Even so, her tendrils began to flare as she indignantly glared at the Fallen.

“That’s not how we do things,” she protested. “Even Geists have codes. We don’t trick those who we don’t want to be tricked by. And we don’t steal what we don’t want stolen from us.” She reached out again to swipe her camera from the other Nightmare, but to no avail. “Would you want something like that stolen from you?”

“Don’t know,” the Fallen confessed casually. “Never owned something as fancy as this before. Not that I know how to use it,” he added, inspecting the device as he turned it over in his hands, “but I bet I could sell it for a good price.”

“No, please!” the Geist pleaded. “One of my mentors gave me that. It’s very precious to me!”

“I know,” the boy said, his voice suddenly serious. “Everyone sees you around with this thing everywhere you go. I knew it was yours the moment I saw it.”

Eris’ brows furrowed in puzzlement. “Then why would you just keep it?”

Sighing heavily, the Fallen took up the empty seat beside Eris. “Listen. No, you can’t have it back,” he told her, moving the camera away as she tried to grab it again. “Not yet. Listen to me first and then maybe we can make a deal."

Sitting with her hands in her lap, the Geist looked at the other student with contempt. She hadn't done anything to him; how could she? She didn't even know him! Still, though, she sat attentively, waiting. What else could she do? Besides, she was curious as to what he had to say.

“A few days ago, I gave a feather of mine to this girl,” he began. “It was a sign of friendship. The next day, though, she started to avoid me. I couldn't figure out why until I overheard her friends say she had lost my feather. I guess she didn’t want to face me to tell me she had lost it.”

The Fallen’s whole frame drooped, his shoulders and wings slumping as he spoke. Eris thought he looked as dejected as she felt. She wished she could take a picture to capture that moment, but then she reminded herself she was supposed to be paying attention to the story.

“Then the day after that, I saw you wearing the same feather in your hair. Don't even try to deny it. I know my own feathers when I see them.”

Eris raised her head at this. She didn’t remember – ohh. That feather.

“I was going to give it back,” she explained quickly. “I just wanted to see what she would do. When I saw her with that feather a few days ago, she just looked so happy and I couldn’t figure out why. It was just a feather. I thought she must have picked it up in the forest or something.”

“So you stole it?” The Fallen’s voice was hard.

“I was just borrowing it,” the Geist assured him. “Like I said, I wanted to see what she would do. She was very sad at first, but she didn’t do much after, so I thought she might have forgotten about it. That’s why I wore it – to remind her about it and maybe talk to her about why it made her so happy,” Eris continued. “But no matter how many times I passed her that day, she didn’t say anything to me. She didn’t even try to ask for it or take it back.”

“Well of course she didn’t!” The angry Nightmare boy threw up his hands in exasperation. “She’s too nice to say anything! She probably didn’t want to accuse you of stealing! How was she supposed to know you were just 'borrowing' it? You didn't even ask her permission!”

“It’s just a feather,” Eris countered meekly, shrinking in her seat. She didn’t understand why he was getting so upset. Yet again, she wanted to get a picture of it. If she could have a picture of him like this, maybe she could study this type of anger. “I was going to give it back to her soon; I was just waiting for her to respond. Besides, I wouldn’t miss a feather if it was taken from me, so I thought it was okay to take it from her for a little while. Besides, you have loads of feathers! Couldn’t you have just given her another one?”

“That’s not the point!” her companion snapped. “That one was special. Even if you Geists have a code, it’s a stupid one. What might be precious to one person might not have the same value to another. Like this camera – I can’t do a thing with it, so it’s pretty worthless to me. Does that mean it’s okay for me to take it from you?”

Lips parting, Eris struggled to think of a retort, but she couldn't find one. Eventually, she closed her mouth again, licked her lips, and replied quietly, “No.”

Seeing his point had been made, the Fallen seemed to ease up a little. “Good,” he said. “If you promise to give that girl back her feather and apologize for taking it, then you can have your camera back.” Looking away, he added, “I found it sitting on a desk in one of the classrooms. You must have accidentally left it behind.”

“Oh…how careless of me,” Eris murmured, thinking back. “I’m sorry. I promise I’ll give back the feather and apologize to your friend. And in the future…I’ll…make sure I know how much something means to someone before I…borrow it. I never meant to cause either of you so much grief.” Pausing, she said, “It’s interesting.”

Casting her a glare, the Fallen boy thrust the camera into her arms. “Here. And don’t forget your promise. I’ll be meeting that girl at lunch tomorrow to see if she got it back. Understand?”

The Geist nodded happily, accepting her treasure back with obvious glee. Leaning forward, she kissed the Fallen on the cheek before he even saw her coming. Then she snapped a picture. As a result, Eris managed to obtain an even better photo of him with an even more interesting expression than the ones she had wanted to take of him while he’d been talking. He was right – some things really were more valuable than they seemed.

Crit Incoming!

Okay, first thing's first, it's probably a good idea to have a longer description of her appearance given that you have been entering her in customs! That way, if she gets picked up, our colorists won't be guessing! You can put her form in the first post no problem. This also means you need to look at the lore yourself and figure out what needs to be changed for her to fit into the shop without breaking lore. 3nodding Please be aware that you most likely won't have her with her camera on her art until she's at least Junior stage, though she can still have it ICly. It won't fit on the Freshling lines.

As for her general description, there are some problems. You state various times that she is manipulative and partakes in blackmail, which is a malicious activity by definition, though say she's not malicious. This is a major contradiction and needs to be fixed, since she is actively not trying to change her behavior, but instead improve her methods. It's also likely that she would be expelled from the Academy for collecting such pictures, as there are dorm checks.

The trait "extroverted" doesn't exactly fit with your description. Extroverted people tend to like to have lots of friends, not just acquaintances, and generally don't jump from group to group as Eris does, but instead have many groups they are actively involved in. A better term may be "Hyperactive" as it suits your description better of how she flits from place to place and how quickly people get sick of her. If you were going for her with having ADHD, this fits pretty well! This could even possibly be combined with your trait of "Entergetic" as she honestly does come across more as hyperactive with a serious attention problem.

The fact that Eris doesn't care if she gets caught and only continues her behavior is a large issue if you want her to remain a student at the academy. Hiding in areas she's not supposed to be in, such as bathrooms or lockers or vending machines is not only impossible for a freshling (as they gain more control as an older junior, and freshlings are unable to control it at will) but would also get her expelled from the academy. There is very little tolerance for repeat offenders.

The fact that Eris also likes to make people laugh seems really out of place for her character so far. She seems to enjoy people's misery far more than their happiness, especially by spreading rumors, scaring people, and blackmailing them. Her blackmailing of couples, as I stated previously, would also get her expelled, as the Academy staff takes these issues very seriously.

I do not see Eris having many friends with her behavior, seeing as she prefers making fun of people over having fun with them or actually forming a relationship. As I also stated before that blackmail is by definition malicious. She would be told by staff that this was not okay, and the fact that she would even think after that point that it was wouldn't make much sense.

Please do note that all Geists do not generally find pleasure in others misfortune. It might be a good idea to take a closer look at Geist culture in the racial guide, as there are many problems with Eris' perception of her own race.

Overall, I believe there's a big issue with how you're trying to portray her and how she actually is coming across. You seem to want her to be a playful, teasing, fun loving character, but instead she's coming across as a snooty, manipulative, and generally awful girl. We don't mind these kinds of characters at all, but we feel as if what you want her to be isn't matching up with what she is. She also is very very likely to get expelled with her current behavior. Please note that art is very different from taking malicious pictures. She likely would not be tolerated very well by the other members of Arkham.

Moving on to your third post, please note that the vast majority of students at the Academy are orphans, and it is incorrect to say that most have parents or families. This is the whole reason the academy exists. It might be a good idea to read the lore again to avoid any misunderstandings. It also doesn't make much sense why a staff member would give her such an expensive gift, especially when she had no prior interest in photography. This gift also would not generally make her friends, though she might be a little popular right after it was given, soon enough they'd be interested in something else.

It seems very odd that Eris wouldn't understand what blushing was as a freshling. It's isn't something she wouldn't have seen prior. It's also more likely she would be given a book for facial studies, not a camera.

Please also note that it's not likely a student would be so mean to Eris just because of her race. Something like this would not be tolerated by staff at all.

Please quote me back when you've fixed her up. If you have any questions, please send them via PM.

All fixed! 3nodding Lemme know what else I need to change, if anything!

Crit Incoming!

Appearance looks good, if you want, it might be a good idea to mention what you want her tendrils to be like.

Your Energetic trait still seems a bit off, especially combined with Superficial and Extroverted, specifically with her lack of making meaningful relationships and inability to focus. Yes, she has plenty of energy, but as you haven't mentioned her having ADD or ADHD, I thought I would mention it to you. A better trait for her may be Distracted.

Eris taking pictures of compromising situations, such as the couple, would not be tolerated, even if there was no ill will behind the situation. This is the same for candid photos, as we have addressed with you prior. In order for her to do this, she would need the consent of the party or parties prior to taking the picture or pictures.

On a smaller note, if her camera is her only favorite thing, you might want to change Favorite Things to Favorite Thing.

Your Hobbies section does not reflect the rest of your changes, neither does her Abilities.

If she likes technology, why does she only stick to cameras? It seems a bit odd for a technophile. You also don't need to state it's crystal each time, Nightmare technology is only crystal at this time. You also need to update this section to reflect the changes.

In fact, it seems like everything below her general personality has not been updated.

Her background also needs to be changed, considering it hasn't been updated. This includes her past influential event, as we have asked you to change how she got the camera. No caretaker would give a freshling such an extravagant gift with no prior interest. It is more likely she would need to save up with her allowance.

Your prompt still has a number of the issues we have brought up to you. Eris would still understand what her culture was and that she was flirting. She would know what a Fallen giving a feather to another would mean, and considering Fallen feathers tend to be larger than that of the average bird, she would know. The Academy teaches all children about their cultures and that of other races and as you stated "She understands and agrees with more of her Race's ideals than any other." it is clear that she would understand this aspect. The Fallen in your prompt would also understand this.

Let us know when she is fixed by quoting us. You are welcome to PM us any questions.
