Class Activities

            You may enter four characters per stage! Please remember to always keep responses in-character for this class! Should you fail the class you may immediately try again once new activities are open!

            Please have your characters RP in this thread as if they're in class! Please do NOT quote Yushika. Use the form placed under each prompt to enter for class participation/points.

            Opens: January 22nd, 2016
            Closes: February 28th, 2016 (There will be brief grading periods between then and now).

            Freshlings

            Homework: Lyra is away at a teacher's conference, and a substitute has stepped in to teach the class! The easy part is over, however - in her lesson plans, she wrote that she'd like everyone to write something today. The very act of writing an essay can be educational!

            Hunter's Jubilee is upon us! Freshlings will write a short story of at least 100 words. It should be about a time that they felt love (platonic, familial, or otherwise) for someone else, and how they handled that feeling.

            Hunter's Jubilee is upon us! Juniors will write a short essay of at least 150 words about what the celebrations of Hunter's Jubilee mean to them. Does their family celebrate it, or was it something new to them when they moved to Asphodel Gardens? Why is it important for us to celebrate all kinds of love?

Nightmare: Sorren

Prompt Answer: Sorren sat at her desk, arms folded in front of her as Lyra spoke. When the assignment was finally given she nodded. She knew exactly what she wanted to do when she was done with school. This was one of the easiest assignments she had ever been given. Getting up from her seat Sorren hurried to her dorm, eager to do her homework so she could move on to more exciting things. As soon as she was at her desk she started to write.

When I'm done with school I plan on attending Grendel University. Once there I plan on following the art path, specifically glassblowing and painting. Once there I would love to join Custodes Fabrica and even one day sit on their board. I want to create beautiful art that will inspire people, the kind of art that can move people to tears or make them laugh. I believe that going to the University will help me do that. After all I believe that natural talent will only get you so far, it takes practice and hard work for someone to be especially wonderful at something. So if I'm going to be the best artist there ever was, which is my plan, I need a few more years of school.

Once I'm done with school I think it would be cool to be a teacher either at the University level or here at the Academy. That way I can help others realize their potential as well as keep creating art on my down time. I think it would be cool to have my own art gallery, or maybe have some of my pieces in museums? Regardless I would love to do anything that will allow me to keep working on art and even help people while doing what I love. I'd also love to be rich and famous, but those are dreams that I wouldn't be crushed if they don't happen.

Sorren reread what she had written a few times and then put it in her book bag. It wasn't the best thing she had ever written, but it did what she was asked to do. She would turn it in the next day, but for now she got back to the art piece she had been working on.

----

The next day Sorren was one of the first to class and handed Lyra her homework with a smile before going and sitting on her desk.

Nightmare: Meris

Prompt Answer:

Meris tapped his pencil against the desk. He really hadn’t thought much about what he wanted to do after school. In fact he didn’t really have much drive at all. Sure he liked to sing and he liked to do a variety of different things but enough to make a career out of it? Figures out of all the things to ask it would be the dreaded what do you wish to do after school. Was it a crime not to have planned your whole life out already? Well he wasn’t the type to cast off homework, if the teach wanted an essay he would definitely give her one.

To tell you the truth, I’m not sure what I want to do after university, so it makes it hard to decide what to choose. None of my hobbies are really strong enough passions for me to feel like I should pursue them after….

Meris hissed, glowing in agitation and crumped the paper up before hitting it against the wall. He got a concerned glance from his roommate but shrugged Morin off before turning back to the evil homework. He chewed on the end of the pencil before taking another piece of paper out. Everyone expected Meris to go to Grendel; after all he had spent most of his academy years in a band. However while he loved singing… it was too cliché and it placed him in a box when people looked at him. He hated it.

To tell the truth it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do after school. This was actually a hard question, due to I wasn’t sure where I wanted my career path to take me. However I do know that I want to continue my education. I do not feel like I am quite ready to be thrust out into the world

Que paper getting crumpled and meeting trashcan; He did mention that he wasn’t going to like this essay didn’t he?
“Ugh it shouldn’t be this hard to figure out what I want to do….”

I wasn’t sure how I should start this paper. It’s a bit overwhelming to think of after the academy after spending so many years here. Not to mention here are so many different things after school to choose from that it makes it hard to decide such as: go to university, don’t go to university and join the work force. Then once you decide on what path you wanted to take, it’s then followed by the inevitable… what do you want to pursue in that category? If I must admit it to myself and others, thinking on where I want my path to bring me is a bit clouded. Truthfully this question was probably a lot harder to myself than others. I do know however that I don’t want to join the work force just yet; I don’t think I’m quite ready to be thrust out upon the world. So I guess what I am trying to write is that I know that I want to go to university after school, to not only further my education but find out who the future Meris is going to be. I feel like I might find that in Grendel. After all I’ve always found that I feel most at home on a stage, convincing the world that I am bearing my real heart out to them.

While I normally do this through signing, it would be fun to take it to the other stage art. To see how well I can convince other people I am someone else. This isn’t to say that it wouldn’t be more fun to figure out how far I could push singing and music. However far could I get, and what new things can I learn about how to enrapture and audience, it’s kind of fun to think about. So to sum up I want to see exactly where the future leads. I know being slightly indecisive now will probably hurt now, especially when I’m not sure on my future major. However I’ve never been afraid of hard work and I’ll definitely try my best to figure out what path I should take and just keep going forward.

Meris sat the pencil down and scooted the chair back from the table. So he had somewhat decided after all. Then again even if his hobbies weren’t as passionate as they could have been. Meris had to admit he was most happy doing something creative.
---------------------------------------------
Walking into the classroom, he gave a polite nod towards Lyra before handing in the assignment. Probably not his best homework ever but at least it was in. Only way was forward now right?

Nightmare: Joseth

Prompt Answer: Joseth sat down at his desk near the window, which usually commanded his full attention during class, except today was the day the new Language Arts teacher arrived. Not wanting to be rude or disrespectful, the Junior gave her his full attention, writing down the homework with his favorite pumpkin-topped pencil. When he was done he trained his scarlet gaze back on the board, a bit surprised at how strictly she handled his class. Language Arts sure would be different from now on.

Joseth didn't really have to think hard about why he fit into his house, and with his ink pen and favorite notebook open, he began his assignment:

Though I can't really remember what drew me to the Eldritch house, I knew it was the place I was meant to be in. I was little, maybe I chose it because purple was the house's color, and the fact that I had purple hair just made sense. For whatever reason, though, I couldn't be happier in any house but mine.

The old energy that flows between me and my house-mates is comforting and I'm put at ease knowing that my house's commonly chosen subjects appeal to me more than those of the other two schools. The fact that there is such a variety of subjects available for me to choose from under the umbrella of Eldritch house strengthens my confidence about pursuing a higher education.

At the moment, the subject that appeals to me the most would be divination. I feel the most welcoming energy whenever I pass by that classroom, and I admire the intense concentration and mental discipline needed to excel in that area. I think I would do well as a divination major because I'm a Litch, as history proves some of the best diviners were of my race.

I'm confident that whatever the future has in store for me will be great because of the solid foundation my house has given me.

The lilac-haired Litch read over his homework as the ink dried, a frown tugging on the edges of his lips. It seemed a little sloppy and a little forced, and he might have copied down part of the Senior's homework and added it at the end of his essay, but he hoped the new teacher would be forgiving.

~~~
Joseth returned to class the next day and handed Lyra his assignment, making sure she caught him glancing at the board for that day's assignment. He hoped the next writing prompt she gave them would end up better than the one he had just completed.
Prompt Answer:
    After Academy, I want to find a major that will continue to make me as happy as my studies here. Grendel seems the most fitting for my needs, and I hope to find my place in a literature major in order to continue to study a realm of texts and stories. Maybe it is sort of boring to be so concrete in my interests, but literature has continued to keep me engaged from Freshling to Senior. There is a limitless amount of knowledge out there, and I want to take in as much as I can. Maybe I can help write a few texts on events that have transpired from after the Cache, but I truly hope none of us become lost history again.
    I know a Fallen's mind may be a bit intimidating, but after graduating from Grendel, I wish to stay around the Academy and off what I can to young Nightmares from the Cache. I don't believe I would be a good professor - I'm too disorganized for that sort of thing in a professional setting, but a tutor or maybe librarian would be a perfect job on the side. If I don't get some sort of job sharing what I know, I might become too recluse for my own good, as history and tales can make grand friends on their own.
    If I must explain all my goals in life, I hope to imbue a stone after leaving the University I call my alma mater. I'm not sure I could do it on my own, raising a Freshling that is, but many of the Freshlings I have met here at the Academy have also brought me much joy. Some days it bothers me I came from the Cache, and I am eager to see a world of happy families starting to piece things back together again.
    "Good morning," Cassie greeted her teacher with a smile as she passed her essay onto the stack. She was aware she had been told countless times her writing was more personal than academic but come on - this time she felt like she had a pass as it was about her after all.
Nightmare: Rajna
Prompt Answer: Rajna squinted as she stared down at the piece of paper before her, slapping her Chimera tail lightly against the side of her chair with a subtle thump. Her problem here wasn't saying what she hoped to be when she grew up, but how to get what she wanted to say down on paper. Her mind was powerful, but she always struggled with how to convey her words aloud or on paper.
The little icy blue Chimera accidentally swung her tail a bit too hard on one of her chair legs and nearly pitched herself over. The chair pivoted and rocked, left to right, front to back almost like a spinning top as she tried to regain her center of gravity. The chair fell back in to place with a small bump, making Rajna stiffen, as if fearful the whole class would have noticed her struggles. That would have been embarrassing. Just in case, Rajna scanned the room with pale, narrow, cold eyes. The only eyes she found on her were those of her teacher, Lyra, and once more Rajna stiffened, only this time immediately putting pencil to paper, fueled by terror to do her very best.
'when i grow up i want to stare at the stars,' Rajna wrote with unsteady hands. 'i want to study them and name them. i want to know the names of all the stars in the sky. i want to find new stars and big stars and small stars that nobody ever thought was there. i want to look in those long white things the you point at the sky so you can see the stars better. i want to shine like the stars. i want to be a star.
also i was not goofing around my tail hit my chair and i nearly had an accident.
'
Rajna pulled back as she lifted her pencil from her paper and scowled. For once, the words were really close to what she wanted to say ... but ... her writing was nigh illegible, just as she worried it would be. What did it matter if her words were pretty, or elegant, or smart sounding when her handwriting looked like complete garbage? The writing was so squiggle-y and shaky that Rajna felt she'd likely have to do another assignment.
With a heavy sigh, the child slid out of her chair with a thunk, stuck their hand on top of the paper and slipped that off the desk too before slap. slap. slapping towards her teacher. tail dragging on the floor behind her in a walk of shame.
"Uhm, excuse ... " Rajna piped up, lifting her homework just high enough to slide it over the desk, little eyes and horns peering over at Lyra. "I ... finish. Homework?" she said, pointing with one tiny finger at the mess on the page. "You ... read? It early. I finish before tomorrow."
Nightmare: Starlet
Prompt Answer:
The assignment seemed pretty standard. It was about time to be thinking about the future, even as distant as it still seemed. He'd long since decided that he wanted to move on to Leviathan after the academy, but as for what he wanted to do after... Starlet was still lost on that. Did he have the temperament for teaching? Or did he just want to go straight into the field? Once back at his dorm, he settled down to write. He'd rather get this assignment over with now so he could go back to his star charts...
"After graduation I intend to move on to Leviathan University. I want to continue with Astronomy as my focus. I do not know what I want to do after I complete the program. Perhaps I will find out while I am there."
Only four sentences. That wouldn't do... Lyra would not pass the assignment with that short a reply... He sighed. He really hated adding in extra words where none were needed, as far as he was concerned, he only needed four sentences to convey what he was thinking.
"I was thinking that I might consider teaching, if I have the temperament for it. I do not know if that is something that will keep my interest. If I do not go down that path, I think I would prefer to work directly in my field. There is still a lot we do not know about the universe, I would like to discover new things and further our knowledge."
There. Four more sentences. Technically four sentences counted as a paragraph, didn't it? He couldn't remember. Just in case, he decided to add a little more...
"Either way, it does not matter for now. I would prefer to focus on my schooling. I will deal with the future when it comes time to do so. I do not like to waste unnecessary energy on things that will not matter for quite some time."
---
The next time he came to class, he quietly set the page down on Lyra's desk. Without a word, he turned to go take his seat and stare intently at the board, as per usual.
Nightmare: Aella
Prompt Answer:
Aella sat near the back of the room and when the teacher demanded they write down their homework first she actually had to stand up to see over the tall Baphomet who was sitting in front of her. At a look from the teacher though she quickly sat back down and dutifully scribbled her assignment in her day planner. "Why we do or don't fit in our house -- Two paragraphs." She sighed quietly and started to think while the teacher began today's lecture.
"Why I don't fit in my house..." she mulled over the question in her head, because more than anything she definitely Didn't fit into her house and she often wondered why she was even in Arkham. Not that any of the other houses were a particularly good fit for her either...so she guessed she had to be put somewhere. She picked up her pen and began to rough out her essay.
While many other students are probably very happy in their assigned houses, I often feel that I was placed in my house because I had to be put somewhere! I know this may seem a very harsh tone to take but Arkham is a house of creative individuals who love to draw, paint, act, create music and stories. I however am none of these things. I'm just a bookwyrm (for clarification Ms. Lyra that is what I call myself as I love to read and would horde books if I was allowed but evidently the staff won't allow students to have more books than they have shelf space. Something about a previous student who stacked their room from floor to ceiling with books, and fire hazards?).
To be honest I don't think I really fit into any of the houses, as I have interest in all subjects of learning but don't really feel the need to master any. I think the most important thing is to be knowledgeable about lots of things so that you can always have an educated opinion about a topic. I suppose this might be a very juvenile attitude to have, but it's just the way I feel. I wish the library was an academy house, because honestly I would be most happy and content in House Library.
Aella frowned, she guessed it was good enough. It was at least honest and you couldn't fault her for being honest. Once class was over she put her essay in the tray on Lyra's desk. Couldn't fault her for being punctual with her assignments either.
Nightmare: Vespera
Prompt Answer: Vespera was not fond of sitting still or being on the ground for an extended period of time, so this class was not ideal for her. Writing was not something she believed she would enjoy when she walked into the classroom. It would be too hard she thought. The floofy haired chimera slunk in her seat as the teacher arrived in the classroom and swiftly explained the first thing she was to be writing about.
She exhaled softly, a small frown on her face. When she grew up... She wanted to be everywhere in the sky. To be free of small spaces like this stuffy, nightmare filled classroom. She glanced out the window to her right and this time let out a dreamy sigh, her purple eyes sparkling. She then looked back to her paper, her expression shifting into determination. She needed to finish this assignment so she could get out of here!
"I want... to get out of here. It's not like I have anything against anybody. Really. I just want to be free. I don't really wanna wait to be all growed up. That's such a long ways away! I want to fly all over the continents and discover everything! Right now! Why do I have to wait? I'm still learning how to fly, but so far I think I'm doing good for teaching myself. I like to go fast! Also... maybe I kinda wanna find someone who appreciates me for my good traits and doesn't make me feel too bad for having bad traits..."
~~~

The little freshling looked over her paper a few more times before smiling and quickly running up to the front of the classroom. She placed it on Lyra's desk and grinned at her teacher. "That wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! Thank you for the assignment Ms. Lyra!" She had finished just as class was getting out. She smiled once more at her teacher and then rocketed out of the classroom on her little feet.

                          Language Arts was proving to be an enjoyable class. She had been given a coloring page and was carefully detailing her work, being careful to stick to the lines of the various letters on the page. As she sat at her desk she swung her legs back and forth under her chair. She was small and even though the desk were appropriate sizes for Freshling, her feet still didn't quite reach the floor. She only looked up from her work when Lyra mentioned homework that would be due tomorrow. She had to write about what she wanted to do when she grew up! That would certainly be fun to do! She was a little startled by the noise caused by one of the other students, her feathers ruffled a bit at the sound, but she calmed down after a few seconds.

                          She spent the rest of class practicing her handwriting, trying to make all the letters as straight and not shakey as possible. She waved to Lyra as she left the class room and the second she was back in her dorm she set to work on her assignment.

                          I've always loved being outside! I want to study everything that goes on in nature. I've often wondered what makes certain flowers smell or look the way they look. How is it that frogs can jump so high? What causes the rain to fall from the sky and why do rainbows sometimes appear after the rain? I want to spend as much time outdoors as I can! I know when I grow up I want to study plants and the natural world around me. I plan on spending as little time indoors as possible!

                          She must have rewrote the same paragraph at least five times before she was satisfied with how her writing looked. It was probably about as good as it was going to get.

                          When she returned to class the next morning she placed the paper on top of Lyra's desk and with a little blush on her face she smiled and said, "I hope you enjoy reading it!" She covered her face with her hands, spun around, and ran into a desk. She fumbled a bit, managed not to fall over, and than sat down in her usual spot.

Trenton scribbled the assignment at the top of the page of his notes and resisted the urge to roll his eyes. What an inane assignment, but fine if that's what she wanted.

Arkham has always been the proper house for me. I have always had a passion for music and for writing my own even when I was a Freshling. Arkham has helped me foster this love and allowed it to grow.

I only wish sometimes the house was quieter as many of the other students are quite loud in their pursuits of art and aren't entirely considerate of those of us who are trying to work on very important projects! None the less, I suppose I fit very well into my house and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I'm happy I am where I am and appreciate all the things my academy house has done for me.

Trenton looked over the assignment and was tempted to ball it up or at least scratch a couple sentences, but realized if he did that he'd have to start over and he'd never get anything else done and he'd much rather work on his concerto than write his assignment over again. Despite his worry he'd get marked down for being snarky he passed it in anyway the following morning.

Prompt Answer: Victoria wasn't quite sure what to think when she saw the assignment, tapping her pen on the side of her face after scribbling down the assignment. It lingered in the back of her head through the entire class. How she fit in her house? Really? Was that really something she needed to think about? Shouldn't they be asking about what she wanted to do with her life. Pouting, she just let it linger, finally happy to be out of the stifling classroom after. Of course, after practice, she was more than happy to write it.

Arkham is perfect for me because it is. I breathe and exist for dancing, and there's nothing else I'd rather do. I've been able to meet so many people and be offered so many opportunities through my house that I couldn't think of being anywhere else. I’ve been able to meet some of my best friends and acquaintances here, and while some of them are in different houses, the majority are from Arkham.

I’ve never really been interested in anything else besides dancing, so I don’t think any of the other houses would suit me. Even if things get rough, I know my family at Arkham will be there for me.

Finally satisfied, she didn't hesitate in turning it in the next day with a smile on her face. Maybe her teacher would like it?

Morin walked back into his room knowing that any essay about the future was probably going to frustrate Meris, but then it was obvious that the teachers wanted to make sure they at least had some plan for the future. Of course after making sure Meris wasn’t doing something more harmful to the room he turned back to his own essay. What did he want to be? He loved music and writing and everything creative practically.

What I want to do after academy. This has been a decision that I have struggled with for a while. In truth I am not entirely certain what I want to do. However I do know that I want to go to Grendel. I want to major in Music. I’ve always had a passion for playing instruments, and it’s helped me connect with people I would struggle with understanding.

So I want to see how far I can go. I want to prove to myself and others that I can make it and just see where my fates lead me. I am not sure exactly what I want to do after university but I do know that I want to use music to help other people and just continue creating and playing things that I love.

Well it wasn’t his best essay ever but it was done. He still didn’t understand why his roommate/ best friend was still having problems with it. Now to finish up the other pieces of homework so he could go meet up with Nasai and possibly Kappa later.
