The mare continued her silent meandering, her mind full of memories that made her wish she were once again a foal, wandering through the caverns of her homeland. But here she was, in the foreboding wilderness that was only familiar in bits and pieces of white-coated scenery and icy streams. Briefly, a scent crossed through the chilling breeze, and it gave Freya pause. She stood stock-still, her hooves planted firm as her eyes darted about, searching for the source of the random scent.
Her blue eyes narrowed, confusion written on her features. She hadn't dreamnt up the smell. Was that even possible? Had her loneliness gotten so deeply rooted that she was now imagining smells of other Soquili and animals in which she might have company with?
She shook her head, in the process shaking loose cold snow that had collected wet and shimmering among her blue-black locks. Her eyes closed and she sighed indignantly, before once more opening them, this time her mind a little clearer, but her mood a little sour.
It was then that she saw him.
How could she have missed him in the first place? He stood near the treeline like a statue, dappled brown coat almost blending in with the shaded darkness and bark of the surrounding trees. Yet it was the eyes that caught her notice - narrowed, piercing blue - and staring at her with a look that spoke of annoyance. She stopped in her tracks and stared back at him, her own pale eyes wide with curiosity and agitation. Should she approach? Run away?
