User Image Iroia and Vosh had gone for a short hike that had turned into a few hours. Iroia had started to relax a bit around him and found it was easier both on her nerves and her enjoyment of his company. He was becoming part of her pack the bonds getting stronger with each hour they spent together. Everything was right in the world, she hadn't heard from Ms. Kaa in a while but their shifter sidekick, Rue and Vosh were as well as they could be and having her family safe made Iroia happy.

They approached the camp and 'Roia tilted her nose up trying to catch a whiff of what Rue might have been cooking in their absence, maybe some tuber? She wanted to wiggle her eyebrows at the thought. Her ears caught an unacustomed disturbance of noise and she clasped Vosh's hand in hers and headed that direction...what was going on?

Then she saw a battered bloody Kaa and screamed rushing to her crumpled friend and clasping her hand checking for a pulse. Most disturbing of all this was the first time she was in Kaa's vicinty and the woman had not flirted with her. She seemed unconscious. Rue was nearby. "What the grass happened here?!"

A small, less freaking out part of her noticed a small Alkidike nearby..and the girl looked remarkably like ...

It was at times like these when Iroia was glad she was not the fainting type.

(Continued from here)

Kiki ran to Iroia and hugged her tightly. It had been a while since Iroia and Votzhem had babysat her, but she knew it and she needed people right now. ”He's a bad man!” she sobbed to Iroia, pointing to Ruelash, ”He killed mama, and... and... he's bad...”

”Fer the last time, ye little s**t, yer mama ain't dead.” Ruelash snapped sharply, though the kid's every sob felt like a physical blow. He was busily delving into the medical supplies in their camp, bringing out more. Some had already been used on the prone alkidike, but he had done a number on her: more would be needed. ”And if you don't shut up, I might not bother!”

It was an empty threat. He could no more resist doing as her little face asked than he could stop being Ruelash.

”You b*****d...” hissed Votzhem, drawing his blades and advancing towards Ruelash. Kaalnia was his sister, in blood and in soul, and if this man had hurt her... Doppelganger or not, Iroia's friend or not... he would pay.

Iroia curled herself around the little girl. "Its okay Kiki, your mama's still alive and she will stay that way if I have to move the earth." She felt tears threaten in her green eyes. If there were ever a rock and a prickly place she had found it. She wanted to defend Rue, heal Kaa, and calm Vosh and Kiki all at once, mediating was not her strong suit she was more of an executor. Ugh, what had happened to blow up so fast while she was away.

Rue for his part was helping to clean Kaa up, it was the words out of his mouth she objected to. She did not take kindly to anyone insulting any one of these people. So she bit her tongue and brushed Kiki's hair back from her face tenderly, she bared her teeth at Rue, a not so subtle rebuff. Calling him out would be too harsh since Kaa attacked him. It was not good to upset little Ki any more then she already was.

Iroia stood and walked to Vosh, neatly depositing the daughter in his arms between the blades, before taking her own out to cut away Kaa's clothes where the wounds were. When in doubt play dirty. Vosh couldn't attack without putting Kiki down and Iroia hoped the little girl would cling to him like she had been to her. It kind of broke her heart to let her go, but nothing would compare if they all lost Kaa. "Vosh could you and Kiki get water from that stream please? I want to keep Kaa's forehead cool shes burning up."

She needed Rue's help, Vosh could play with him later, no doubt Rue would like the distraction and she would be able to keep them from getting all encrusted in blood like poor Kaa. The fight might be inevitable that was the way creatures like them ran but right now Kaa was the whole world and she needed them to all work together to save her rash butt.

Kiunyki clung to her 'uncle' Votzhem as hard as she had clung to Iroia. When Mama had been stitched up and had lain there, so still, Kiki had been sure that she was dead. Whatever the man had said, she was dead.

And then she'd started shuddering and coughing and Kiki had started crying all over again – her mama was dying all over again. She held onto Votzhem for dear life, wondering, all the while, why he looked so much like the bad man... or, rather, why the bad man looked so much like Votzhem...

”I'm scared...” she whispered in his ear.

Votzhem gripped his blades, tensing, ready to draw them and cut this man down where he stood... And then suddenly, Kiki. He held the girl, shifting so that his hold would not be so awkward as he gave Iroia a long, irate look.

”All right.” he said. Fine. He could see what she was doing. Fine. He was supposed to be the rational one... what did that say about him now?

He held Kiki with one arm, picking up a bucket with the other, feeling like he was a wild animal, pacing, in a cage. He growled something unintelligable... and then relented. Kiki was scared and, if something happened to Kaa... He had to be there for her.

”Everything's going to be okay.” he said, kissing the top of her braided head, ”Just watch. Your mama will be okay. She's always okay.” He had to believe that too... he wanted to believe that But her wounds... No, he had to think positively, just a little. That was what Kaalnia would do, if he was injured. He dipped the bucket awkwardly in the water, filling it as best he could. He couldn't give up on her.

Ruelash bared his teeth right back, not in the mood. Why had the stupid Alkidike decided to develop complications? After he had worked so hard to stitch her up? Stupid painted hag. He glowered at her, at Iroia, at everybody before he finally found what he sought. Fever medicine. It tasted like muck that had been sitting in the sun for a while, but it worked and when you were feverish and unconscious, you couldn't taste anyway. Not that he cared.

”So what, this lady's your friend, or something?” he asked unhappily, handing her the potion. That did change things – it meant he couldn't make good on his threat to the little brat, which sort of defanged him. ”Ye know, she tried to kill me. An her brat too.” he scowled at her – Kaa and her ally – before going back to the medical supplies, ”I'm just sayin'.”

Iroia saw the change in Rue's face. "She is my friend yes," she glanced back then kissed Rue's cheek quickly in a small show of affection for her pack mate. "I'm glad you are okay." she said. Now if everyone would stay okay then she would be very happy. "She is a friend, Lash you are family." In fact her relationships with any of those present were not simple or clean cut.

Her emotions seemed to be dashing around in a rather unruly manner. Ugh, family, friend, mate, such sad little words to describe the different loves which were no less deep for the changes among them. A tear slid down her face as she watched Vosh holding the little Kiki. A entirely biological part of her mind noted how good he looked with a child in his arms. She shook her head no, she had to stop Kaa's bleeding, patch her up. It looked like she would make it but it had been near the line when Kaa's body gave out on her. "Foolish woman." Of course she didn't know the real intricacies of the past. Kaa just wasn't congruent with enemy to her and neither was lash wild but dependable at least to her, something she cherished.

She would be lucky today if her hair did not fall out today.

Iroia did her best to patch Kaa up and felt much better when she was neatly bandaged and all the spare blood wiped away from her pale skin. Iroia laid a hand on her brow checking her temperature. Depending on bloodloss shock could set in. She ducked into one of the tents and added another layer to dispell the cold that might come to claim her friend.

Now that there was nothing left to do but stare and pray that Aisha watched over her daughter and that the band of iron determination in her friend pulled her body though this ordeal.

Her answer was somewhat placating, though he had never quite thought of Iroia as family. Kin, in a way, but family? He had family – lots of family: Jawaad, his nieces, his father... Veshki... Blood-kin all. Somehow, that was different than how he felt about Iroia. She was kin in a way they weren't, but she wasn't blood kin.

It was confusing and complicated, and Ruelash decided not to think too much about it. ”She probably ain't gonna die.” he said, leaning back and shrugging, before putting an awkward bloodstained hand on Iroia's shoulder, an uncertain attempt at comfort. ”Probly.”

Votzhem hustled back to the camp, bucket in one hand, child in crook of the other elbow, trying to figure out what he could do. Kaalnia was his sister, it didn't matter how that worked, or that her mother hadn't pled for him, but she was. He couldn't let her die – for Kiki's sake.

The problem was, the water needed to be hot, and it would take too long to heat. Minutes long. Minutes that could mean Kaalnia's life. Fire spells were not his specialty – of all the magic he had attempted on bored blizzard-clogged evenings, air was his strongest element. However, he managed to heat the bucket with his hands as he set it nearby Iroia, the warm Jahuar air helping him. ”Here.” he said anxiously, shifting Kiunyki so that she was more secure in his arms.

Kiki huddled into his shoulder, not wanting to look anymore at the scene that was concluding around her. She was afraid of what she might see – the same, her mother dying, the ice man standing over her. Or worse, her mother dead, the Ice man a killer. She didn't want to see either one. She wanted to wake up from this horrible dream, and hug her mama, and have it all float away on beams of sunlight. But, alas – she sniffled with regret - she knew she was awake.
