Trèvor slumped into an empty chair in the Slytherin common room and glanced about. He couldn't help but sigh and run a hand through his blue afro. He almost wished he had homework to work on, at least then he wouldn't be so darn bored. If the weather wasn't so nasty outside he would leave the common room.
He had already wandered around the castle, and didn't find any kind of action that would even remotely interest him. He really needed to expand his group of friends. They all were so terrible at school that he was always waiting on them.
"Ugh," He moaned and then got up to check the books that had been left on a table. He was a little surprised to find one on a subject that actually interested him. He picked it up and rifled through the pages, and then became engrossed enough to sit down at the table and lose himself in it.

Alarice huffed slightly as she closed the door leading to the girls' sleeping area; she had just gotten through searching the entire place top to bottom, even risking an encounter with a rat to peer under the beds, looking for a certain little miscreant. "Shin?" she called out, peering along the corridor for his familiar tinged coat. "Pusspusspusspuss?" Blowing a jet of air out of her mouth in frustration and causing ripples among her unruly bangs, she walked away from the door and down the hall, not even bothering to stop and observe the patterns of light on the walls cast by the decorative puddles of water that served to remind the Slytherins that they slept beneath the Black Lake. Where had that darn cat gone?
Unbeknownst to her owner, the feline in question had found something interesting in the common area; a boy with blue hair that looked like it would be fun to play with, poring over a book, which were quite fun to sit and rest on. Trotting over with no sound to mark his passing, he nimbly leaped up to the table and sat serenely at the boy's elbow, waiting for him to notice. He had had much fun in the past startling people that way.

Trèvor was now completely enthralled in the story of Oedipus, a mythical king in Greek mythology. It was a strange, outlandish story but it was so interesting he just couldn't put it down. The fact that he was a tragic hero and had done so many things really piqued his interest.
He wasn't really paying attention to anything around him so he didn't notice the little visitor who was now sitting next to his elbow. He flipped another page of the book and bit his bottom lip slightly. Man..this Oedipus had married his own mother! How crazy was that!
He shuddered at the thought. Too bad he hadn't know any better. He shook his head in disgust. Then he flipped through that story and moved on to a story about Antigone. At least she seemed rather interesting and not in a bad way.

Almost seeming irritated that his presence was not having the effect it usually did, Shin lowered his head and gave the boy's shoulder a small nudge with his head. Well, if he couldn't be scared, he could at least make himself useful and pet him!
Alarice entered the common area and looked around, taking in the general quiet of the place. It was a bit late in the day, and everyone was doubtless either out studying in their own special nooks in the castle, or doing other things that she would rather not know about. She thought longingly of her own place; a nice tree on the grounds, surrounded by springy heather and a respectable distance from the Black Lake. If the weather wasn't so lousy (and if she knew where the deuce her cat was), she would be there right now.
She finally spotted his lavender-tinged coat over by one of the richly ornamented tables, where a boy with blue hair that looked to rival the wildness of her own bangs was poring over a book on the table, seemingly oblivious to the cat sitting beside it. She picked up her pace as she walked toward them; she knew Shin liked to sneak up on people, and though it wouldn't be the boy's fault, she was ready to defend her cat if he turned out to be the type that tried to throw them across the room for startling them.

Trèvor had just gotten to where Antigone had snuck away to bury her brother Eteocles when he felt something rub against his shoulder. Very carefully and slowly he turned his gaze to see what might have interrupted him so gently. He blinked and then stared at the purple tinted cat that was trying it's best to get his attention.
Trevor couldn't help but grin at the furred creature and reached over with his free hand to scratch it beneath it's furry chin. He was a bit surprised to find the cat's coat super soft. He didn't go around petting too many cats as his pet rat Santiago didn't really care for the smell. Not to mention that he went bonkers whenever he smelled cats. He would have to make sure to wash his hands really well. Maybe even take a shower before he went back into his dorm room.
"Well hello there cat, what might your name be?" He asked curiously as he checked for a collar. He found the purple bluish collar and adjusted it so he could read the name tag. He bent closer to read the inscribed name.
"Shin, that's an interesting name. I wonder who you belong to."
He favored the cat with a few more pats before he stood up to move.
"Sorry Shin, if my Santiago wasn't so finicky I'd pet you more. You should go find your owner." he told the cat firmly.
He glanced down at the book in his hand and sighed bfore he placed it back on the table. He wouldn't want to annoy whomever the book belonged to by walking away with it. He would just have to find something else to do with his time.

Now that was more like it! Shin narrowed his eyes and commenced to purr at the scratching. He didn't mind as the other fumbled around for the collar and even obligingly held still so that the hands could more readily find it. The boy's hands smelled vaguely of rat, which interested him even though he preferred insects as his prey.
As though he understood the query, Shin promptly sat down on the table and looked in the direction of the archway that his owner had just emerged from. He had to hand it to her, she was pretty good at following him around, even when he was out of sight.
Alarice saw Shin waiting for her and couldn't help but grin; silly cat was probably thinking to bring her more out into the open with her fellow Slytherins and make more friends. Well, that WAS what the Sorting Hat had in mind. Offhandedly she wondered if the old cut of cloth had envisioned this friend-finding cat for her as well, even though hundreds of miles lay between it and the shop she had found him in.
She approached the boy and stopped at the end of the table, reaching out to scratch Shin between the shoulder blades, right where she knew he liked it the most. "Hi......sorry if he bothered you. He just likes to do his own thing sometimes."

Trèvor was a bit surprised by the cat's response. Then he smiled. Of course, familiars were a lot smarter than regular animals. Shin probably understood him completely.
"Oh hello," He replied to the blond girl that had come up next to him and was now scratching the cat between the shoulder blades.
"He wasn't as bad as my Santiago gets. He'll climb all over me and try to do down the back of my shirt if I don't pay him that much attention." He replied with a grin.
"I'm Trevor Studwick, I think I've seen you around in class, so you must be a first year as well." he replied wiping off the fur from his hand before he offered it out to her.

Alarice couldn't help but smile, now that she was certain that her cat had not made too much of a nuisance of himself. "Oh he can get a lot worse than nudging you if you don't pay him any mind; he'll vanish and then try to scare you by reappearing in the last place you'd look for him. That's why I think he has to be part Cheshire or something." She smiled down at the cat, who continued to sit with his eyes closed to slits, purring as his shoulders were rubbed.
"I'm Alarice Banning" she said, offering her free hand. "Yep, I'm a first year too. I'm honestly so glad to be here; I don't know how much longer I could have gone on keeping my magic in check at home."

Trèvor couldn't help but laugh at the description she gave of the cat. He was a bit surprised when he heard the cheshire part. He hadn't know that cheshire cats actually did exist. That was something interesting to write and ask home about.
"I had no clue that Cheshire cats really existed. It would be cool if he was." he said glancing down at the purring purple cat. "Of course his color kind of hints that he could be." He added.
"Nice to meet you Alarice." he replied shaking her hand roughly. He didn't realize he had done it so hard, he was so used to greeting other guys that he just shook how he normally did. "I guess I was lucky to grow up in a magical family. I don't think my sister was too happy to learn about the magical world though, she's a squib. I feel sorry for her sometimes. It would be hard to know about this world existing and not to be a part of it."

"He is a strange color, isn't he? You'd think with that color he would stick out more, but he doesn't." Alarice smiled and moved her hand up to scratch behind the cat's large ears, smiling wider as she saw the ears twitching happily. "I don't know if they exist either; I've been meaning to ask the Care of Magical Creatures professor about it, but even if they don't know, I know there are plenty of creatures that haven't been found yet, and the best tall tales still have some basis in truth."
She seemed a bit surprised at the roughness of the handshake, but chalked it up with the assumption that he just liked to show his toughness. Lots of guys were like that, especially, she imagined, ones just starting out and looking to make names for themselves. Her smile faded and she shook her head. "I've always felt a little sorry for the Muggles; always scared of us and not knowing just how much we could help them if they'd let us. But they'd sooner do us harm first, and I don't think it's worth it to try then."

Trèvor watched in amusement as the cat's ears twitched as she rubbed behind them. "He is an odd color, but it suits him for some reason. You could mention it, but what if it was true? Would they take him away from you? You may not want that to happen." he added frowning as he looked at the smiling cat.
Trèvor blinked and cocked his head to the side. He had never thought of it that way before. "Man..I hadn't thought of that. I didn't realize they would want to harm us because they can't understand us. I thought it was just because they hated us. Huh." He mused over that for a moment.
"Well it was nice to meet you Shin," He told the cat as he patted it on the head once and then turned to peruse some books that had been left out on a different table.
"Say Alarice, you don't have any books that you wouldn't mind lending out would you? There are hours before dinner and I don't have anything that I need to do. What are your plans until dinner?"
He wasn't sure why he was asking the girl these sorts of things, maybe it was because he was bored out of his mind or because he frankly couldn't come up with anything to do.

Alarice shrugged. "I don't think they would; it's not like he's dangerous or anything. Vanishing and reappearing at whim probably isn't high on the Ministry's classification when it comes to magic creatures." She scowled a little and her scratching became a little more jerky, eliciting a small scolding mew from the cat. "And besides, I'm not letting ANYONE take him away; not a wizard or a Muggle."
She sighed a little and resumed her gentler scratching. "It could be that too. They've never been good at liking things they don't understand. It's like they'd rather hate it than try to understand it at all." She shrugged. "Well, it doesn't much matter to me; I'd just as soon have nothing to do with them, even if I do think they're a sorry lot."
She paused for a moment to consider the request. She was usually pretty picky about who she lent things to, since even wizards had their sticky fingers and their mistreaters of borrowed things. Still, Shin seemed to like him, and that was a good mark on his character in her book. Besides, it seemed highly unlikely that he would ask for any of her precious books on unicorns, the ones she liked to keep close and read late into the night with just the glowing tip of her wand to illuminate the text. "Well, I don't have anything in particular to do until dinner, and I have a pretty good stack of books under my bed; what do you need in particular?

] Trèvor nodded at her words, he could understand her wanting to protect her pet from other people. He was the same way with Santiago. A lot of the boys in his dorm room were afraid of rats and didn't really take kindly to him being there. He was constantly being told if he didn't watch his rat that they'd feed it to their snakes or lizards.
"Well I can understand wanting to protect him. I'm the same way with my rat. My roommates keep saying they'll feed him to their snakes if they find him out of his cage. I think they're just afraid of him."
Trèvor wanted to see her reaction to his familiar being a rat, one could never tell if someone didn't like them.
"I think everyone has their own reasons for hating certain animals, sometimes they just can't get over their fears. "
He waited to hear her verdict, as he could see she was mulling over his request. He was glad that it didn't take her long to come to a decision. Some girls from his experience took forever in making up their minds.
"Do you have anything that has adventurous people in them? I've read and reread all of my books. If you let me borrow a book I will take very good care of it and keep it locked in my trunk when I'm not reading." He promised.
A sudden thought came to him. "Perhaps you might want to go looking for the room of requirement with me. I still haven't found it. If there are two of us it may actually show up for a change."

At the very mention of the three letter word, Alarice visibly blanched until it seemed like her entire face was made of chalk. "You have......a rat?" She tried not to look as frightened as she felt, but she couldn't help it; if there was one thing that terrified her more than drowning, it was rats. Their beady little eyes and pointy teeth just made her want to scream. She honestly thought she did quite well around other students' pet rats, just so long as they kept them far away from her, and preferably in a pocket or a cage. She noticed that Shin had perked up at the mention of her foe, and was looking at Trevor with a little more interest than she felt was healthy for his pet. She knew he was good at keeping rats away, and that if he ever DID eat any, he kept the remains out of her sight, for that was always enough to send her into a panic. He was so clever and thoughtful that way.
She nodded and smiled, her fear of rats momentarily shelved. "Oh I have lots of those; I love books that have adventures in them. The more outrageous, the better. Honestly, I love tall tales; they can be more fun because they don't even try to convince you that they could really happen, and it seems less restrictive to the story, you know?" She smiled. "That's good to hear; many students here really don't care about books unless it's theirs, and even then they do awful things to them. especially dog-ears; those drive me NUTS."
She perked up even more at the mention of the room of requirement. "That sounds fun; you can find some of the coolest stuff in there! What are you looking for, if I might ask?"

Trèvor was surprised at how white Alarice got at the mention of his rat. He somehow held back the laugh that threatened to emerge when she choked out. "You have..a rat?"
He nodded slowly and backed away slightly. She looked like she was getting overwhelmed at the idea of a rat. He wondered if she was going to go into a panic or freak out about it.
He looked over at Shin and noticed the cat was staring much more intently at him. This rather alarmed Trevor. It was almost as if he understood that they were talking about a rat. He eyed the cat closely.
"I'll make sure that he stays in his cage far away from you and Shin. I imagine he's good at catching things."
Trevor was excited to hear she had all kinds of adventure books, those were his favorites. "Oh I completely agree, there is nothing like a good tall tale. I grew up on them. My dad used to read to me all the time. He'd do all kinds of sound effects and different voices for all the different people too. Sometimes during the holidays he does it. " He replied fondly.
Trevor shook his head at the thought of books getting ruined. "that's just terrible! I was taught from a very young age that one is supposed to treat books gently. And to never fold pages and use a bookmark. It would annoy me to no end if someone messed up one of my books, so you can rest assured I wouldn't do it to any of yours." He promised solemnly.
He was surprised to see Alarice perk up at the mention of the room of requirement. He wasn't sure if he should tell her what he was after just yet. He didn't know how she might react. "You mean you've been in there? I have yet to actually find it. I've been searching for months! I uh..well if you help me find it then you'll find out what I'm looking for."
