The entire way back to the main facility Lawrence had had attention for one person in their grim party, fixated on America whenever she was within range of his sight. He remained silent, not through choice but because with the gag there was no option but to be, seeming far away as he walked, falling into repetition easily. All the while he was dwelling on America, on the deep obsession that choked out everything else. It was as illogical as it had ever been, but no less strong. She had ruined a perfectly sensible plan, set him back once again to zero and possibly murdered him but he could think of nothing else than how much he would like to be alone with her again, to talk and snipe, to try and understand the fire in her and pin it out.
He was not sure where they were, he had lost his bearings and hadn't been to the Life department many times other than brief stints in the labs tending to minipets, but he knew fine well who was in charge. H was dangerous to trifle with, you did not get to be in charge of an organisation like Deus without a certain degree of ruthlessness and he at present represented a Problem.
The ropes were irritating his delicate skin and this as he went, became more of a concern than any danger he might well have been in. It was simply rude to tie him up this way. Rude to leave him here, rude to keep him from speaking to America. Horace was alive, he failed to see the problem.

Taym had paused to take some pictures of Horace's immediate condition, dispassionate, disgusted. He wouldn't need them--there'd be records, files, video of Horace being carried into the infirmary in the state that he was in--but he had long since stopped putting faith in the willingness of the organization to keep up with these things. Keeping up with them himself accomplished nothing, but he so rarely felt, any longer, that he had any control, and it was easier to pretend that in some small way and delude him he did than to give in to the more dangerous if more tangible methods: hunger pains and flesh receding from his ribs over the course of days, weeks, months. And there was, too, a desperate need to prove to himself: this is real. People will look the other way and people will deny but this is real. This happened. You saw it. You have proof. As for Lawrence's delicate skin, Taym was paying it no heed, half-shoving him along in front of him, occasionally giving him an ungentle cuff alongside the head when his attention strayed too hungrily to America, like a wayward horse ridden to slaughter and sniffing a mare through a fence, getting his reins yanked until the bit dug in. He let himself into H's office as usual, but for once he wasn't alone doing it, wasn't restless with anticipation. He was dead-eyed, careful, flat of voice and demeanor, and he spoke up before America could. "Apologies for interrupting but your colleagues," he said, "are all indisposed, and I suspect you might like that you're going to hear this before Caelius, anyway: this one, who has a history I'm happy to regale you with should you be unaware, has a boytoy who failed to keep his appointments today. Given that history and some suspect text messages, we were concerned and went out looking, and we found said boytoy barely alive with, interestingly enough, an O carved in his chest." A pause. Generally Taym was all nervous tension and agitated hands, especially around H, but he was nothing now, as automaton and detached as Lawrence himself. "Dwight may have relayed some of this to you already, not sure if he realized the gravity of the situation. Forgive any redundancies," he said, toneless.

America remained silent for the most of it, dealing with both Horace's dramatic attempts to harm himself further and Lawrence's eyes on her had sapped a lot of the girl's energy to deal with s**t. Having gotten rid of one, she couldn't wait to get rid of the other and maybe go take a ******** bath and wash the rest of the two men away. The doctor glanced up at the group, eyebrows rising higher the longer Taym went on. He looked them over in the ensuing silence, eyes finally landing, of course, on the girl. The doctor spun the pen in his hand once, then twice, and then his hands stilled completely. With a smile, he greeted her, " Miss Jones. It's been nearly a yea hasn't it? If you ever wish to regain entry to the pod room, do come visit me for a reassessment of your abilities. When there's less pressing matters at hand, of course." At this he glanced at Lawrence, "Do you have the phone on you?" And to Taym, "Which division is the ah... boytoy in?"

Lawr smiled cordially behind the gag and shook his head at H. The phone was with the bag he'd been carrying and he was not about to admit that. He did not gesture to have it removed, simply returned his attention straight back to America. He was not surprised that Dr H himself seemed moderately inclined towards speaking with the huntress on more private terms. He could not fault him and perhaps if he too found her agreeable it just might get rid of Taym.

Taym reacted to Lawr's flagging attention by grabbing him by the hair again, ungently directing his gaze back at H's desk. The shake of his head had warranted a slightly pained expression at his own lack of foresight, but they hadn't, after all, gone in search of Horace's phone. They'd gone in search of what Taym had been halfway convinced even with just a few hours' absence would be his body, and they'd done slightly better than that. "Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, given his ********' willful ignorance, he's in Death as well. Not your circus, not your monkeys, I know, but it didn't seem wise to just cut him loose, especially given the O situation." He paused. "Sorry about the gag, but he makes me look taciturn, self-aware, and humble, so you can ********' imagine. We can take it off, if you want to talk to him personally." He did not, even a little, acknowledge the way H had looked at America. He didn't acknowledge America at all. He had the strangest irrational feeling that to acknowledge her would be, in some way, to put her in danger.

America just gave a terse nod at the offer, quietly relieved that incident wasn't going to come up further that day. With a sigh, the doctor went on, "Then I'll have his rooms searched." He turned an apologetic glance toward Lawrence, "I will be increasingly irritated the longer it takes to find it mind you." He sounded happy about it. "Carving an O into somebody rather complicates things, you understand. Do take out the gag," a little flap of the hand at Taym.

At the comment on the phone's location Lawr twitched his shoulders in a way that implied that if he presently had the use of his arms he might well have splayed his hands in an apologetic fashion. Why it certainly wasn't his intention to hinder the progress of the highly necessary investigation.
But there was decidedly an instant where his gestures froze, a flicker as if a glitch or error where he seemed to halt entirely, focused around the term rooms. But just as fast as it could be perceived he relaxed once again, moving his eyes in Taym's direction as at that time his head could not, and he maintained his utterly cordial smile as the gag was removed.
This finally accomplished, he took a moment to clear his teeth of the dirt and to cough before speaking. "I would not dream of you being irritated sir and I apologise for any perceived evasiveness in this. The phone is in the forest, not far from the cave in question." He smiled amicably. "I do strongly commend my fellows for their strong and ardent sense of civic duty. Their "rescue" was very impressive, lots of back pats are indeed required all round, why I might have attacked them - I almost feel apologetic that I did not. But the fact of the matter is that Horace was in no real danger from me and that the O you speak of was not in fact the letter O but a semibreve and was in fact, what he desired. A valentines day gift, if you will."

Taym's face visibly strained around the effort of not rolling his eyes, or possibly murdering Lawrence, or both. He mouthed the word semibreve at the ceiling.

"Bullshit!" America interjected, finally turning and speaking, well shouting, at Lawr. "You had him bound, gagged, and alone in a cave after cutting into him, removing a ******** finger, and whatever else you did to get rid of his shield! " The doctor smiled. "Quite a difference in accounts, isn't there? Mr. Weiman, who will the evidence support in this?"

All the friendliness went out of Lawr's smile at the use of his surname and the smile faded. If he had been unbound, he would have summoned Butch there and then, with no self preservation to stop it. It was an affront coming from a man who went without a name, who had been permitted to persist without a name, but he knew this game, this was his island and he was despite everything a prisoner.
He instead moved his attention to America and smiled politely. "There is no need to yell., missy. I am right here and my hearing is perfectly adequate."
Looking back to H he went on. "She is quite right about the raw facts of those statements, and I am sure the evidence will support those things but as for the motivation I think you will find the truth of the matter quite different. The fact is that he wanted to be treated like Miss Jones here, asked specificially for it. It was his deepest aspiration to experience what happened to her. I am the generous sort, so I indulged him. "
There was a rictus edge to his smile as he added. "Some people do request some odd things, you understand. Of course you do. It is frankly absurd to me that a man who lives under a cryptic pseudonym should not understand deviant behaviour quite intimately."

Taym, aside from having yanked Lawrence by the hair again when he tried to talk to America, said nothing. Especially not after that.

With a grin, all teeth and good cheer, the doctor got up from his chair. "It was given to me by someone I loved, and as such, the least deviant part of me." Glancing at America, the doctor briefly raised his eyebrows and then turned attention back to the captive man. "Follow me, the two of you as well if you wish, otherwise you may consider your job done." Compressing her lips, America glanced at Taym as the doctor ushered Lawr out of the office.

"Oh do pardon me then." Lawr said all saccharine smiles and apologetic bows He had never heard of the man having anyone on the island close to him in any way that was visible to the populace. It was therefore assumed that this object of affection was already dead, because in Lawrence's own world view that made utterly perfect sense. Attachments or fixations that were too strong were to ultimately to be excised and stored away in a more acceptable format where they would neither expose some weakness or other and could be perused at will. "I will have to concede that point." And once again despite Taym's repeated deterrence, he sought to eye America, keeping his gaze on her as much as he could as he made his way out of the office,.
"Perhaps you should leave, missy. I should not like to see you upset." he purred.

As soon as Lawr spoke to America again, given that he couldn't yank him around by the hair any more, Taym deigned to mutely spit in his face a third time (third time's the charm), right in front of H, completely apathetic and disregarding entirely Lawrence's input. Spitting in Lawrence's face didn't actually help, but it felt like it should help, and so he did it anyway, on principle and because if for no other reason Lawrence's face more or less constantly looked like it needed spitting on.
He hesitated, torn between seeing this through and getting out of the contact filth of Lawrence's presence, but in the end exhaustion--and worry for America and a desperate need to pry up the corner of her non-expressions and outbursts and see what was festering underneath, see if it was something he could fix somehow--won out. Unthinkingly wiping his hands on his jeans like they had been slimed from such prolonged contact with what he undoubtedly considered a human slug, he was almost apologetic as he reached to wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her protectively to his side and jerking his chin at the door.

Leaning her head into Taym's shoulder, America knew that seeing it through is what she should do. She felt responsible for Lawr's actions the way you might for the aggressive stray that followed you and slept on your porch when it wasn't off killing children and passerby. Horace had just made that feeling worse, ever since that ******** spar. Why couldn't he have just said that he'd keep it under consideration and let her wash her hands of his shitty decisions and so-called ability to read people? Why did have to make his car crash end so obvious right from the beginning?
After seeing what happened to Lawrence she should go see him, make sure...
Straightening, she slipped out of Taym's hold, only to take his hand, "Let's go home."
America didn't want to be responsible for either the monster or willing victim. Let someone else sort them out, she'd done her part here and that would have to be enough.
Lawr would find himself led down to one of the secondary, smaller pod rooms. "Normally it would be your own division leader dealing with things, but he's a bit busy at the moment. Fortunately I have use for you until such a time as he sees fit to take an interest in your existence again."
