THE CAFETERIA
Where students and teachers alike unite for one goal -- to find sustenance in whatever mystery meat meal is being served.
It has a remarkable ability to amplify whatever sound is made anywhere in the room, making lunchtime a cacophony of noises.
A common 9th grade project is to analyze this rather irritating phenomenon and criticize the architects who designed it.

today's menu:
breakfast: wild berry blintz, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, oatmeal
lunch: jambalaya, cheesy baked polenta, clam chowder
dinner: London Broil, cabbage stew, chicken tortilla soup

How Leo was chosen to be the academy nurse was still beyond Delphi’s comprehension. His bedside manner was lacking in every way, shape, and form. Maybe people thought he was just playing. Like his dickishness was all an act or something. All part of his charm, right? Come to think of it, Del wasn’t sure that she’d ever seen him be truly nursely to a student that had walked into this place. Hm. But that might have been because she tried to avoid spending time in the office as much as possible. Nurse’s offices were like hospitals to her, you never just went for fun. Something is always wrong when you have to walk into one of them. Eh, but visiting to see her best buddy wasn’t all that bad. Although, Del was still trying to come to terms with how he’d achieved that status as well. All indications and warnings pointed to the two of them despising one another. But then, then she caught his scent for the first time and was added to Del’s ‘List of prey’. Then, she got to know the ******** and scratched him off the list as quickly as he had made it on. Only because she was sure his heart would be hard to stomach… and because she liked him as a person.

                                                      “You kids should skedaddle.”

“Damn, Leo. You’re just gonna kick the poor babies out of here?” Not that Delphi cared, but wasn’t he supposed to be the nice one to the children? She hopped to her feet, stepping over to finish stowing Leo’s chair. The Gumiho leaned up against the desk, taking in his interaction with the students in the office. “We’re not just going to leave them in here are – oh. Okay“ Delphi hadn’t even fully finished her thought but that was most definitely his plan. Nope. There was no way Del was going to be the ‘responsible adult’ in this interaction. If she did it this time she would have to do it all the time and well, Delphi was not ready for that kind of responsibility in her life. She paused for a moment, wondering whether or not she should say ‘bye’ to the students. Hell no. She’d never greeted them in the first place. Del bolted though the door as soon as he had opened it, turning back to wait for him to pass though as well. She almost lost it as she watched Leo duck out of the room as if he were escaping from a prison. Yep. They had actually left those kids in the office. But, Del had worked past that. Now wasn’t the time to think of teacherly responsibilities. Right now the only objective was food.

“I’m sure I saw lasagna on the menu.” the woman glanced back at him, seeming to pick up her pace. “We should hurry before all the good food is gone.” The last part of her statement seemed a bit more urgent. This was a very real fear! There was one meat item on the menu and if Del didn’t have that she’d probably just go hungry for the day. Del had certain things in the cafeteria that she ate and those certain things were exactly what everyone else loved. Maybe Delphi needed to change her eating habits? Nah, bump that. Punks just needed to not eat all of her favorite food items. She pulled open the doors to the campus cafeteria, breathing in deep. She was pleasantly surprised to say the least. She'd expected a less than pleasing aroma to hit her nose. Did this mean the food today was going to be eatable? Ah, and they'd arrived just in time! There were barely any students in the place. This meant they could sit where ever they pleased! Oh, and that it would be quiet for Leo.

Sliding his feet along the ground, Tatsuya had left Salt's dorm and walked right past his room. He wanted nothing more than to just sit down and relax for a bit before the horros of the first day of school would start. He knew that there would be schedules laid out on the ground, forgotten, snack wrappers thrown mindlessly and tons of gum. If it was one thing that never changed it was that people loved to chew gum. He didn't mind it, either, in fact he had just recently bought a pack of spearmint gum that he hadn't even opened yet. It was just for those times where he was found by a student. Tatsuya would offer them a piece of gum as a sort of prize for finding him in the rare moments that he let himself be seen cleaning around the school. He normally didn't carry the same flavor of the chewy item twice in a row, though, because that was boring. In the past, Tatsuya merely carried around the empty wrappers and hand them out. A lot of people could see right past his little trick but there were still people that few for it or were just bored and decided to let Tatsuya have a little bit of fun.

'I've got to go and see how the lunch crew is handling themselves.' He thought to himself as he walked over to the custodian closet and looked at the shelf that carried extra trash bags and gloves. The grabbed at the glove box to find that it was empty. He clicked his tongue in annoyance as he ripped the box apart before putting it in the trash. Reaching up for another box, Tatsuya opened it and pulled out two gloves, putting them on before grabbing a couple of trash bags. The lunch crew normally had to change their trash cans about every 70 students and what with these students being a bit particular in their diet sometimes there were larger messes than others and the trash would have to be changed even earlier. One just had to make sure that there wouldn't be a chance for the trash to overflow because nobody wants to clean that up.

Carrying the items with him, Tatsuya walked into the cafeteria. The first thing that he smelled was tomatoes. He frowned just slightly. Tomatoes weren't exactly his favorite thing. He hated everything about them. "It must be an Italian themed dinner. Blech." He muttered to himself as he kept his face from showing his disgust at the choice of menu. He was a bit disappointed in knowing that he was better off trying to find something to eat in his dorm just for today. He didn't feel like eating another small Ceasar salad again. Tatsuya noticed one of the lunch ladies and walked right over to her as they made eye contact. She smiled at the male knowing that he was probably going to be in the lunchroom to help with the staff for a bit. "Everything all right here?" He asked as he looked around. There was only a little bit of spills on the floor but they weren't too bad just a couple of meat sauce splatters. "Oh, we're fine, Tatsuya. Today has been slow but that's to be expected. I'm sure we'll get a full house tomorrow, though. Are you ready?" The staff member asked as he gave her a nervous smile. "The amount of students gets bigger and bigger. Guess I shouldn't complain much, though. If they were all tidy I'd be out of a job." He admitted with a laugh at which the woman smiled warmly at him. "There's that smile. You've been so distant lately, Tatsuya. You're making all of us old women worry. What happened to the man who would pull pranks?" Tatsuya lowered his gaze. "I just figured that it was time to act like an adult."
With that, Tatsuya nodded towards the woman and walked off to pick up some trash that had fallen off of the table. He was a bit angry to see students just leave their trash like that but he had to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they didn't see the trash can and just didn't know where to put it? Or what if they were used to places where they were able to leave their trash with ease.

He shook his head as he clicked his tongue, throwing a fallen fork into the bag.

Leo chuckled at the incredulous look on Del's face as they ditched the kids. Now that he thought of it, she hadn't ever seen him with kids. After all, he'd just taken up his position at Ashhaven this summer, when there weren't any kids around. "I’m sure I saw lasagna on the menu.” Oh ******** yeah. Italian food was the best, man. Anyone who said differently was just weird. "There better be some meat left," he commented, breaking into a half-walk, half-run. The cafeteria, decorated this year in pastel-y rainbow curtains, was just ahead. Pushing open the double doors, the ends of his mouth tilted upwards in a small grin. Hardly anyone was eating, probably because they were all mingling in the courtyard like lost sheep. The same thing happened when he went to Ashhaven in high school. It was interesting to see how little things changed.

Holding the door open long enough for Del to pass through, Leo made a beeline straight to the area with food. "Auntie, I missed your cooking," he said, bypassing the plastic trays and heading straight for the food. At least in his years, only the teachers and staff took trays for their food. Sure, he was a staff member now, but there were still a few habits he held on to. "What a liar," the lunch lady said with a laugh, scooping a large serving of lasagna onto a plate and handing it to him. "Ah, you got me. I still missed you, though," Leo replied, taking the plate from the aging woman. Moving over to the refrigerators, he grabbed a bottle of coke. "So Del, you excited for school to start?" He called over his shoulder as he headed toward the shelves of snacks. "From what I've seen, you'll have your work cut out for you." He was referring, of course, to the students he'd passed by on his way to work that morning. Some of them looked like a little wind could blow them right over.

Making his way to the cashier, he rifled through his pockets to find his wallet and tap it against the scanner. Unlike students, teachers were provided with free meals, so instead of laboriously punching in numbers, they just had to scan their ID. Scanning the room for the best seats, Leo caught sight of a familiar old man cleaning tables. Ughhhh. At least he wasn't screwing around in the nurse's office. Leo'd made sure of that. The least he could do was make sure the door would lock once it was closed. Those kids better have closed it, he thought to himself, walking to a table. "Hey old man, what happened to the girl you were with? Did you eat her?" He asked, walking by the janitor and taking a seat at one of the closer tables.

Ryuu Ishiin entered the cafeteria quietly, his head buried in a novel as usual while he walked. He held the rather large book within one hand, while the other struggled to fix the tie of his suit; indicating that he had been in a rush to get here from (probably) a nap. He couldn't loop the tie right, mostly due to the fact he only had one hand available, but tried to do so anyways until he was about halfway into the cafeteria. There, he seemed to give up entirely. His hand fell from his tie and shoved itself into his slacks where it stayed. It wasn't just his tie or nonchalant way of neglecting to fix it that was off about him; it was just him as a whole.

With his medium-length hair, shadowed face, and bags under the bags of his eyes; he was a mess. A handsome mess, but still a mess nevertheless.

Finally Ishiin found his way to a table. Well, rather he ran into one. When he did, he felt for the chair, too enchanted with whatever he was reading to even look away. Once the chair was free, he slumped down into it and continued to read. His eyes darted faster than any mortal eye could comprehend, and within seconds he was finished with the last chapter. The professor looked up from the book with an emotionless gaze, and suddenly slammed it down on the table. His hands covered his face, and he let out a long sigh. He murmured into his hands as they rubbed over his face before dropping back down into his lap. By then, he seemed to remember where he was at when a few staff members stared at him; wondering what the hell was wrong. He smiled charmingly, and waved to them as if to assure them everything was alright. Then, he stood from his chair, and gave the book one last cross gaze before heading over to the serving line. A few people were already here, and he glanced over them a few times without really noticing until his eyes caught sight of a woman. "Easy there, Ishiin... You're here for food. Food." He whispered to himself, but a grin twitched over his lips. "Leave that poor woman alone; she h
as company."
He tried again, but couldn't take his eyes off of her. That is, until he saw the meat on the serving line. It wasn't human meat, which ghouls loved oh-so much, but it was meat. Meat was meat. He set to grabbing as much food as he could; covering his plate with whatever he would reach. There was so much food, and so little time before all of the kids would get to it. Instincts told him to act fast while it was still there.

Humming as he went along, the lunch staff stared at him in disbelief of the pile on his plate. He, however, seemed happy as could be. "Evening, ladies." He cooed as he passed them, making his way back to the table where his book sat after he had made a tower of a plate. He fell back into his chair with a big, cheshire grin on his lips, and he placed the plate on the table while he got ready to dig in. His dark eyes began to shine a deep, glowing red once the smell of his meal wafted itself into his nostrils. After rubbing his hands together in an almost evil manner, he dug straight into his lunch, and would finish within just minutes without even the slightest of a mess.

→They had made it just to time to get a serving of the ‘meat’ lasagna. Normally Delphi would turn her nose up at such sub-par meals but hey, it was free. She took in a deep breath, eyeing the meal cautiously. She picked up a tray, setting it down on the rails in front of her. “The food won’t bite you.” the woman scoffed at Delphi’s reaction. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that.” Del replied swiftly, taking the piece of lasagna from her hand before sliding away as fast as she could. She picked up a bottle of water, popping the cap off of it. “Is anyone ever excited for school to start?” Del asked, bringing the bottle up to her lips to take a long sip. She was pretty sure that there had be some kind of rule established to prohibit people from consuming their items before reaching the cashier but who was really going to stop her.

→ She let out a chuckle at Leo’s comment. He was 100% correct. To be honest, Del hasn’t seen a single student that would be worth her time. The woman had very high standards when it came to instructing and wouldn’t settle for her student being weak a** punks. Mama didn’t raise no punks and Delphi didn’t either. “Let’s hope they straighten up before they set foot in my classroom or I’ll toss their asses out.” she said in a very matter of fact tone as she scanned her id. “But you must be ready to treat some student, huh?” she inquired, stifling a laugh. Delphi followed behind the nurse, her nose catching wind of a very familiar scent. ‘He must be nearby…’ Del’s eyes scanned the room but it seemed that Leo had spotted her target long before she did. Tatsuya. She almost didn’t want to eat her lasagna any more. Before Delphi had been properly introduced to Tatsu, he’d been on her target list. You know, people whose hearts she wanted to devour. Ah, but how did he get away from her? He was an easy hunt. If there was one thing Del was all about it was a challenge. Besides, his heart was probably ice cold anyway.

“You going to take that from him Tatsu? Going to let Leo get out on you like that?” she flashed him a smirk as she picked up her fork to take the first bite. Tatsuya knew that Delphi appreciate him as a being, right? She would have hated to look like a bully… even though she was a bully. To be completely honest, Delphi loved to play the instigator role. She thought she fit the role well, like right now for example. She patted the seat next to her, motion for the janitor to take a seat. “Take a break for a minute.” Del requested between bites. “It’s been a while since we all talked.” She glanced up from her plate, noticing that the male teacher she had skipped out on earlier was looking in her direction. Del averted her eyes, glancing back after he had made his way through the line. This was only because she could hear staff members outside of her table mumbling about him. “Should I invite him over?” She posed the question to the other members of the table. Not that she really cared what their opinion on the matter was. Delphi lifted up her free hand, waving to the male. “You can sit with us if you’d like.” she called over to him, pointing to an empty spot next to Leo.

Gripping the top of the trash bag, Tatsuya dragged along the almost-full black sack behind him. At this point any humans that tried to lunge this behind them wouldn't be able to make it budge. Tatsuya grabbed a wet towel from his waist and began to wipe down the tables that he had cleared off. When he was through, he put his towel right back to where it was and looked up at the tables around him. The floors and tables were spotless and now the chairs were all put back to their respective tables. He was feeling content right now but as he looked over towards another section of the cafeteria, he frowned. There was still a lot of messes to be cleaned up. 'Where are those ********' janitors.' He thought to himself. He knew that he wasn't the only one working the shifts today so where were the rest? His section was only to be the bodyguard around the front entrance and look where he was now, cleaning someone elses' job. He wished that they would give him some sort of raise for his hard work. It was about time that he test his limits with the headmaster again.

As Tatsuya bent down to pick up an empty juicebox, he heard the familiar male voice of the intern speak to him. He looked up and just stared at the nurse but the woman beside him, Tatsuya recognized as Delphi, spoke up in a sort of challenging tone. "Of course, I did. I didn't bring her by your office again, right?" He was only kidding, of course. While the student's name was Salt, he was sure that she was also very delicious. The scent of a human was intoxicating but Tatsuya could suppress his need to try to kill her off so quickly. Actually, ever since had started working at this school he hadn't even taken a bite out of one of the humans. He found this surprising. "What about you? You didn't leave those kids to fend for themselves again?" He knew how lazy Leo could be because he's seen it first hand. At first he thought of every possible way to get Leo to quit but nothing worked. Then, he tried to get him fired but as time went on, the little cat and mouse squabble errupted and Tatsuya found himself pulling tricks on the male, instead. They were really stupid ones like tacks on the floor or nails sticking up from the intern's favorite office chair but it kept the time going and that's all that mattered.

Delphi had suggested that he take a break and he looked around the cafeteria. There still were pieces of trash laying on the ground and spills to be mopped up but, again, this wasn't his section in the first place. He looked at his trash bag that he had carried with him and lifted it up at Delphi before bending down to tie it up. A break wouldn't hurt and it had been a good five/fifteen minutes since he had started to clean. Tatsuya was working on tying the bag up for another knot when Delphi had asked the males if she could invite another person over. Tatsuya looked up to whom she had indicated and noticed the perverted, male teacher. They hadn't really talked much but Tatsuya had met him when he was in his happier days. He had just completed setting up a trap for some students when the guy caught him celebrating. It was embarrassing seeing as how he was confident that he wouldn't get caught but the guy kept his mouth shut about it and they both watched as some of the "thugs" ran into spider webs. Tatsuya remebered laughing loudly as the students flailed and squealed over the silky lines. They both could have blown up the area of the school that they were in but were too chicken to worry about blowing s**t up when a spider was involved.

Coming to her decision, Delphi had invited the male teacher over. Tatsuya went to throw away the trash bag in the bin, taking off his gloves and tossing them in before closing the lid. He walked right back to the crowd of adults and grabbed a chair, turning it around to sit in backwards. He raised his arms to rest on the top and laid his head on top. Watching the male teacher come towards them, Tatsuya ran his hands through his hair. "I heard you started classes early. d**k. Did anybody show up?" He asked as he hid his face in his arms. His hands were covered in the powder from the gloves and it was starting to make him unable to keep his fingers from moving.

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
Upon finishing his meal, Ishiin let out a tired yawn and sprawled out lazily in his chair. What time was it? Near noon? The early times of school days had always bothered him; being a creature of the night mainly. His ghoulish eyes faded from their bloodlust back to their near- black hues. There was no use staying any longer, and there was much to do before work tomorrow. There would hardly be any time to get through the next six novels in the series he was reading! Only two hours to spare, in particular! He would have to speed-read. He nodded his head in affirmation to himself as he thought this, lifting a hand to push through his wild locks. ”Six novels, and then my meeting with that Salt girl. Hmm, Ishiin, she’s kinda’ cute…” The hand in his hair moved to rub at his forehead. ”Wow. Now you’re going to torture a poor college freshman… No. Down, boy.” He told himself quietly, and only then noticed a woman waving and calling to somebody. He looked around the vicinity of his spot, and then realized it was him. He pointed to himself in question just to be sure.

When he was assured, he shrugged his shoulders, and pulled himself up out of his chair. Before he took even a step, he lifted his long arms up and stretched them out like he had just awoken. After hearing a satisfying ‘pop!’ come from his shoulders, he let them drop to his sides, and picked up his plate. He didn’t reach the table until he first offered the plate to the dishwasher, and then strolled back over to the seat where he had been instructed to sit. ” ‘Evening lady and sirs. Errr… Afternoon, I should say. It sure feels like evening.” With a bit of a groan, he slumped down just as haphazardly as he had at the other table. He recognized one of the faces at the table immediately, and grinned to himself cheekily. ”Well, if it isn’t Spiderman himself.” Ishiin muttered fondly as he remembered the hell the two had gotten into the previous year. Ishiin had always been fond of his own handiwork when it came to punishing students, but the spiderwebs put in place were genius.

”I hope those thugs haven’t gotten into anymore trouble. I’ve been itching for another prank to give me inspiration.” He grinned a little; his teeth still sharp from his lunch. "As for starting class early... Heh. I honestly wanted to torture my students the first day. I had two people in particular that enjoyed my company, however. I know; shocker. The ones that called me a 'd**k', well," He trailed off and crossed his arms over his chest as he reclined a little in his chair. "They're going to have a very fun year ahead of them. Also, before I forget to address… I don’t believe we have met before.” It was time for Ishiin to flash his grin to the woman who had called him over. ”Ryuu Ishiin. Writer, Literature Professor, Mile High Club Member.” The last one was highly debatable, but he certainly was not going to explain himself.

”Pleasure to meet you, ma’am.” Now came the third member of the table; someone he actually had seen before, yet never had the chance to talk to. ”School nurse, correct? I don’t believe I’ve met your acquaintance either. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to meet you as well. I sincerely apologize for never popping in to say hello.” As he said this, he realized he wouldn’t have a reason for going in there anyways. His skin was nearly unbreakable, and when he was hurt, he merely regenerated. It was the one thing he enjoyed about being a Ghoul. ‘Oh well…’ He thought, mentally shrugging his shoulders again.

To say the absolute least, these last couple days had been busy. However, they weren't just that. There were a tumultuous hopping of place to place, to and fro. And to think, Salt wasn't completely familiar with the grounds by this point as well. In the few days she'd been here, Salt could safely say she must've walked five to ten miles. In only a few days! She was always a busy-bee, someone who just wouldn't give things a rest until they were done and over, or until the young woman was satisfied. It wasn't that this was the case particularly, simply that a new environment required getting used to and maintaining. In the first couple of days, things were bound to be this way.

Day one, she'd met Tatsuya, a kind dragon of probable noble background. He helped her when she collapsed and scraped her knees. She met with Leo, the doctor. The milky-eyed girl from the infirmary, as well. Vanitas and Mary, from the quaint little shoppe. She met Professor Ishiin, and Bon-Hwa, and several other people during the meet n' greet, also. All wonderful people whom she wanted to meet once more, but alas, her true class schedule arrived the day after. Anthropology, Chemistry II, Biology II, Human Development & Family Studies, Justice's Blurred Lines: Influential Philosophies and their Rights and Wrongs.

Words could not describe how excited Salt was to attend each and every one of these classes. She also could not describe her sadness that came with taking them. Not from stress load or anything like that, but being pulled from the people she'd already started to form a bond with. Would Bon-Hwa take any of the classes she was taking? When would she see Professor Ishiin again, if he was a literature professor? What's more, the level of work that came from taking these high level collegiate classes meant little time for fun and play. Little time for seeing Tatsuya, interviewing him for his information, and helping him about.

It truly saddened the frail girl, however she kept her hopes up. It was a large school. There were many days in a school year. It gave her plenty of space and time to speak with them again. And despite meeting all of these people, people who were pushed from her life after the first day, Salt had yet to meet one of the most influential people of her years attending this school. Her dorm mate!

Salt let out out a mildly nettled sigh at this thought. She was currently sitting at a round table in the cafeteria, surrounded by journals and books of all sorts of subjects. To her left was the sciences, and to her right were the socials. The writing and reading wasn't what managed to vex her, it was her luck. In all this time, she hadn't met the the mysterious man that Tatsuya had described as, "an extraordinary student." Albeit one that, "hasn't been able to stay out of trouble," Salt hadn't heard her Dragon friend speak so intensely about anything or anyone before, so that meant Lane Lassiter was an interesting, impressionistic character indeed. His name interested her. Heck, since Salt didn't know anything about the guy, all possibilities accounted for her interests at this point.

The one instance where she had the chance to speak with him was afoul, as he was asleep the only time they were in the same room together! Salt knew because of his snoring and deep breathes. It's scared her quite the bit when she entered her dorm after coming home from the meet n' greet late, only to be acquainted with his sleeping presence. Not wanting to be rude and get caught staring at him if he was to wake, Salt didn't get a good look at him. What lightened her mood slightly, however, was that her simple glimpse had given her enough memory to recognize him if she happened to encounter him in the halls or somewhere on the grounds. She still held out hope that it would happen, or that when she went back to her dorm, she'd find him there and they could finally sit down and talk for a bit.

With a twirl of her cute mechanical pencil, Salt returned to her work. She'd concluded 20 or 30 pages of notes and pre-planning after obtaining the syllabi for her classes. The primary books that were scattered around the round table were required reading materials for each of the classes. Some of them were extra resources she wanted to use for research and further learning. Beneath them were also some books she checked out for her own enjoyment. Those included tidbits about Korean Pop Culture, and Draconian Sociology. Of course, Psychology books had to be sprinkled in there, as well. Salt practically lived and breathed for psychology.

Currently, Salt was working on macro molecule structures, as well as their atom bonding. Her diligent study of quantum physics had brought her to the world of amino acids and their prescription in modern sedation. She needed to study the application of medicine in order to become a certified Clinical Psychologist, or else she couldn't prescribe any medication. Her notebook had molecular structures perfectly written all over the pages, complex derivatives and their isotopes neatly researched and written out. To someone who wasn't familiar with any of this(which was, really, everyone but a chemist), it looked like random scribbles and nonsense. But to a hard working Salt, it was second nature and her first language.

She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear as she worked, adjusting her glasses. It was nearly lunchtime. Salt rose from bed at 6 in the morning, gotten dressed and ready without waking her dorm mate, and traveled to the library to study before attending her classes, only to find they were momentarily postponed due to teacher and supply absence. It made her slightly cross, but she soon got over it. With such a large school and staff, those things were bound to happen. It gave Salt an extra day to begin papers, readings, and assignments - not that she really needed more, anyway.

The clock had finally shown that Lane's class was over and he snatched his belongings and shot out the door so quick that the teacher could only stare. He didn't want to hear another "the bell doesn't dismiss you, I do" lecture like he did the rest of his classes so he bolted out of there. He knew that the topic was going to be brought up tomorrow, anyway. Besides, he was deadly hungry because he still didn't get to train his stomach to starve while he was in class. The only good thing about college was that he didn't have to sit through lectures for a straight seven hours. Having classes scattered throughout the day was definitely the way to go but he knew that even with the flexibility of his class times he was still going to skip quite a bit. Two of the classes that he had to take this semester were ones that he had flunked last semester because he never showed up aside from test dates and the first and last classes.

Lane jogged down the hallway and out of the building. Only one person told him not to run but that didn't stop him. It slowed down his pace but he was still lazily skipping. He wished that he had the power to fly or glide so that he wouldn't have to keep moving his feet in front of the other. The movement got so old sometimes he thought about breaking his ankle so that he could just roll around in a wheelchair. Lane was pretty confident in his twig arms that he'd be able to get more distance with his arms than his legs.

"What are you hungry for?" He asked himself, playfully. He grabbed onto the door handle to the cafeteria and swung them open. There wasn't any food back at his dorm room. Well, not unless you counted the tiny bit of snacks and drinks that his roommate had stashed but he was going to try to meet the person first before eating all of their food. That was the manners way, right? No, he wasn't going to ******** this roommate up like he did the Japanese guy.

He strolled down into the lunch line and looked around for anything that he knew he'd be able to keep down. He had a couple more classes before cross country practice and he wanted to be energized not nauseous. He licked his lips, practically tasting everything that he saw as he piled them all on a tray. He noticed some kids behind him say something along the lines of people wasting food but he was going to show them that he can eat everything on the tray and then some. If he had to be abnormal in any way he supposed that he could always put down "bottomless pit" on his resume.

After paying for everything (thanks, parent's money), Lane looked around for a spot to sit in. It wasn't like he liked to keep to himself. It was one of the reasons why he was so well-known. Normally Lane would just walk right up to a loner table and sit right next to them. The guy just was fascinated with all of the races here that he wanted to know a little bit of everybody but there were some instances that the guy just didn't know how to stop. When he was in his element he tended to go down the route of speaking too much to the point that he would offend the other party. Luckily, Lane hadn't run into anybody that recognized him from last year. "There must be a lot of freshman," He said as he noticed a girl with a table full of books. He grinned widely and made his way over towards her, setting down his tray of food and sports drink beside her. He smiled at her when she looked at him. "Hey, mind if I sit with you?" He asked her, pausing for a moment before dragging a chair for him to sit in. "Too late!" He told her, laughing a bit as he pushed his tray towards her. He knew that lunch hadn't officially begun until a few moments ago but she wasn't in line for food and he started to think what would happen if he hadn't interrupted her... studying? "Want some?"

"A mixture of morphine (C17 H19 NO3) and an inert solid is analyzed by combustion with oxygen. The unbalanced equation C17 H19 NO3 + O2 --> CO2 + H2O + NO2. The inert solid does not react with oxygen. If 4.0 g of the mixture yields 8.72 g of CO2, calculate the percent morphine and mass in the mixture..." Salt whispered this to herself and scratched her head before snapping in understanding.

                    "Morphine has a molar mas of 285.3, so! Morphine contains 71.57% C (204.2 / 285.3) 17 C x 12.011 = 204.2
                    8.72 g CO2 contains 2.38 g C (12.0 / 44.0)
                    2.38 g C / 0.7157 = 3.32 g morphine
3.32 / 4.0 = 83% morphine! I got it! Haha!" She giggled happily to herself, realizing she'd solved an equation they would work on in second semester Chemistry II. It made her beam with happiness. Her momentary joy was interrupted by a male's voice.

"Hey, mind if I sit with you?" She looked up at the figure, eyes widening at who she saw. It was Lane! Before Salt could respond he sat down close to her, muttering a, "Too late!" And then offered her some food. Her chair scraped on the floor as she quickly stood up, cheeks aflame. "Oh my stars!" She wheezed, eyes wide. A quick bow of her head was offered and Salt shook her head frantically. "N-No, I'm fine! T-Thank you, I appreciate the offer." The timid girl set her pencil down and extended a dainty hand, her frame and overall actions tiny and doll-like compared to him.
"How do you do? It's so lovely to finally meet your acquaintance! My name is Salt. I'm your room-mate!" The young woman's rosy cheeks darkened with her introduction, and she gathered her books and things to a neater pile in the table in order to allow him room. Salt's mind was swimming!

How lucky she was to meet him here, during lunch! She'd been thinking about Lane not too long ago, and here he appeared, before her eyes! Trying to steel her excitement, Salt took a deep breathe in and offering him a gorgeous smile, revealing her perfect pearly-whites and accentuated her scarlet button nose. "Pardon my discourteousness. I'm afraid we've shared dorms for quite some time now without properly introducing ourselves. It's delightful to be able to speak with you! I met Tatsuya on the first day and he described your mannerisms. How wonderful it is to meet someone so vivacious." She bowed politely once more and sat, eyes bright and shining like the sun casting beams on a field of sunflowers in the spring. Salt truly looked happy to meet him.

This meant so much to her. It meant a new friend, it meant learning new things, it mean new experiences! She wondered if he was much older than her. Perhaps if they shared classes? Shared career options? That would be very appealing! If he could help her study? A new specie worth interviewing and knowing more about? The options were endless, and they made her tiny heart of hearts grow four times in size! She was gushing, and struggled to contain her excitement.

Then, something new struck her and she gasped. "That's correct, I almost forgot to ask!" The young scholar mumbled this to herself before addressing the man before her. "Might I inquire of any allergies you might have? I've started stocking the dorm with some things, and actually planned on going grocery shopping in the near future. It would truly be awful if you had any adverse reactions to any of the items I procure and bring into our housing space. For example, I use lavender and tea tree extract in my soap and clothing detergent. Perhaps I should switch to something more hypoallergenic if such substances irritate your senses?"

Salt feverishly became red-faced when she finished speaking, squeaking in embarrassment and bringing a hand to her mouth when she perceived her actions. "Oh! I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean to come off as rude by jumping into such things, It would simply be dreadful if I caused my room-mate any harm without knowing it or asking firsthand. I hope you'll excuse my outburst. I apologize." She fiddled with her fingers nervously now, thinking she messed up her first impression by coming on too strong and abruptly about matters considered private or personal.

Just as he was getting comfortable in his seat the girl beside him shot up from hers causing him to freeze up. He had a hand over his heart as if he had just stopped breathing and his eyes slowly roaming over towards hers. He watched, with wide eyes, as she bowed at him and sat down, rejecting his offer of food. 'Uhhh... what?' He thought as he looked down at her hand which had been extended as if he were supposed to shake it. Still not understanding why she had scared him so much, Lane raised a hand and clasped it onto hers, moving it up and down once. He let go and she smiled at him before introducing herself as Salt, the roommate. 'Why does that name sound familiar?' He wondered, not even realizing that she had just blurted out that she was the roommate that he had been thinking about last night and the following morning. When it finally dawned on him he slowly grinned widely and laughed, grabbing her hand again to shake it but more vibrantly this time. "WOW! What the ********? It's really you? Hi!" He said to her. He didn't even wonder how she came to find out that he was the guy that she was going to be rooming with because that would just be too much thinking. (meaning: he totally believed her; no questions)

He kept his eyes on her as he studied her. For some reason, even though he saw the girlish clothing back at the dorm, he thought that she was a guy but with really weird tastes in fashion and accessories. It was strange to think that she was actually a girl. 'Just wait until Faith hears about this. My roommate is a real girl!' He thought, excitedly, but paused for a moment. Appareances could definitely be deceiving at this school especially since the school's vast population seemed to border on either humans or shapeshifters of some sort. He slowly moved his gaze down to her chest. There really wasn't much to look at but there was definitely a lump. He glanced at his own chest. Sometimes, guys could develop those lumps of fat, too.

Salt had brought him back to life as she started to speak about his allergies. He listened to her and tried to follow along but she started speaking like she was racing in Initial D. "Uhh..." He couldn't really think of anything at the moment but he remembered hearing her say something about grocery shopping and allergies. He gave her a thumbs up and a wink. "I don't sneeze at a lot of things so don't worry about it." He replied with a grin. He probably didn't give the answer that she was hoping for but what could he say? She used so many large words that his mind just automatically shut her off to mute until her mouth stopped flapping.

Suddenly, Salt turned red and he furrowed his eyebrows together. "Oh, God. I don't mean to hurt you." He said, holding his hands out. He wiggled around his fingers and looked around. It would be terrible if someone saw them and thought that he was bullying her. There were countless times where he tried to speak to someone and they just thought the worst. Seriously, he was only human. What could he do to them? "No, no. You're not being rude at all. You just... talk really fast." He said, raising a finger to scratch his cheek as he looked away. He blushed just slightly, too, seeing how timid she was acting around him. It was really adorable. He didn't know how he got so lucky.

His vulgarity caused Salt to momentarily pause and blink in surprise, but then her cheeks flared up further and she only offered frantic nods. He seemed bit confused about her wording, judging by the way he answered her questions. Salt began to worry if he thought her weird, now. At times, her vernacular could become a bit archaic for some... She bit her lip subconsciously and opened her mouth to speak, but her interrupted her.

Well, it seems as if he did not have many allergies. Still, Salt wanted to play it safe, just in case. She didn't carry an epinephrine injection or anything of that sort, but did bring allergy medications. "Well," Salt started after he finished speaking, "I've brought antihistamines and corticosteroids in such case that you might need them." He also seemed okay with her going out and shopping for them, which was a relief. Some people might've wanted to buy things themselves, especially if they had certain dietary restrictions. This lead her to want to ask another question, but bit her tongue. Salt honestly believed she was coming on too strong for a man she was meeting for the first time. In her mind, this rudeness were grounds for hateful thoughts - both from herself and from the person experiencing it, as well.

"Perhaps, the two of us might purchase some produce later, then?" Salt paused, blushed harder and then said, "Buy vegetables, and fruits....and stuff." It was actually harder to speak "casually" or "normally" for Salt. Not using her jargon was proving more difficult than assimilating into the jargon of "normal people".

Finally, upon a former greeting, Lane mentioned somehow hurting her. The young woman blinked in surprise and only panicked further. She squeaked in trepidation, shaking her head and hands in alarm and disagreement. "I apologize! I am so, so terribly sorry. You've not harmed me at all, please - don't be perturbed." Again, there was another pause and darkening of the cheeks. "Don't panic, I'm not hurt. Please tell me if you don't understand my sesquipedalian loquaciousness." Salt took a moment to smile at him with her attempt at a joke, though her flushing had extended up to her ears and descended her neck.

She elaborated. "My big, ahm, nerdy talk, hehe." The scholarly girl ended her sentence with a high pitched giggle, flashing him her pearly whites again.

"Moreover, it really is splendid finally meeting you, Lane. You're a very pleasant person. I assume you're off for lunch...What class did you have prior to this?" Salt suddenly had an idea. She got up from her chair and reached over to her cute flowery agenda, reaching in to produce her class schedule. She handed it to him timidly. "Do we share any, by chance of quick inspection? Or, um, uh, g-glance?" A shy smile was offered. "My classes have been postponed due to staffing and resource errors, unfortunately. I've been spending my time preparing and reviewing the syllabi." Salt looked over at the various books donning the table. All new and shiny, with sticky-notes and tabs sticking out of them - same with her several notebooks.

Finally calming down just slightly, Lane pulled the tray of food closer to him and started from the top. It was a duo of sandwiches cut in half and covered in saran wrap. He remembered trying to hoard the triangle shaped sandwiches in the dorm last year because someone in the newspaper article (idk, could've been him) went off on how a delicacy they were really were and for a time they were really popular. The lunch ladies took on to their slight popularity and began to bust these sandwiches out left and right but no matter how early Lane got to the cafeteria they were all sold out. It was a day that he managed to beat the crowd and, with his old roommate's money, bought all of them. Needless to say but it was one of the topics that was brought up that led to some bickering between roommates. There clearly wasn't enough space to house all of the sandwiches before they went bad and even if Lane wanted to eat them all it had been a busy week for him so he was in and out of his dorm room the entire week afterwards. Since his roommate never ate them and Lane got too greedy to give them out most of the sandwiches ended up going bad. Money wasted.

He took a bite out of one of the sandwiches (ooh. tuna) as Salt suggested that they go grocery shopping later. He chewed as he looked at her. Mouth still full of food, he gave her a thumbs up. "Yeah. We can go tonight to get it out of the way." He replied, somehow speaking in a magical way and saving her from a mouthful of disgusting mush. After going to some of his classes he realized that he was missing a lot of materials that he needed and he hadn't been able to speak to anyone about borrowing stuff because his mind was too captured by the thought of his starving stomach.

A couple more bites and he finished off the first of two tuna sandwiches and grabbed at the other when Salt started to use more big words. She looked really happy even though Lane's mind completely glossed over them. He laughed as she giggled. "You're a cute nerd, though." He said to her before thinking about the last class that he had come from. "Uhh.. What class was that?" He mused. He hadn't even left it thirty minutes ago and now he was struggling to remember what class he had come from. He probably wasn't going to get used to his schedule this year and would probably have to keep it out every single time he went out to another class. Last year was hard enough on memorizing where he needed to go to next because all he wanted to do was go play baseball or run.

He didn't have to answer because Salt thought of showing him her schedule. He scooted over and read the print, noticing that it was really girly. His eyes quickly glanced over at her pen and realized that it was totally girly, too. 'I hope she doesn't try to force that s**t on me.' He thought, a bit nervously. "Uh, I don't see any... Oh, wait. We have Biology II together. Hell, yeah!" He exclaimed, turning to her to raise his right hand up for a high five. She seemed like a really smart person to him and seeing as how she thought that it was fine to go ahead and work out some science problems made him feel confident that he'd be able to pass the class.

        With her help, of course.

"I haven't gone to that class yet." He said to her before pointing at the sheet. "Did I miss it or something? That looks like homework." He hoped that he didn't manage to overlap a class time because that would suck major balls. See, another reason why he cursed being human. If he had the magic to make a clone of himself than he could take all of his classes at once and get the rest of the day off. He really was jealous of magic users and people that could clone themselves. "Yeah, but that seems to be the only class we have." He decided against eating the other sandwich rightaway and started to eat the next item that stood on top of the pile. "You sure you don't want any food? I seem like a fatass just eating." He laughed.

Salt nodded when Lane said later that night they would be able to go grocery shopping. She luckily did not catch much of the mush and impoliteness of his speaking with his mouth open, as she began to write in her agenda that they needed to go grocery shopping so she would remember. Her writing came to a stop when she heard him laugh and comment something never said to her before. A cute...nerd?

The young girl looked over at him with wide, flabbergasted eyes and red cheeks. Her belongings had been called cute various times before. Salt was aware of that, because she liked to obtain cute things, it made her smile and giggle. To be called cute, herself, though?

                    "Father! I'm home!"
"Welcome home, Salt. How was your day at school? What did you learn?"
"My day was positively lovely, father! I learned several things about photosynthesis and the krebs cycle. The lesson was incredibly riveting. The teacher even commented on my illustration of how to remember the process cute. It made me very happy." Her father paused and looked over at his tiny sixth grader silently. He stared at her for a few moments before sighing and shaking his head, eyebrows knitted together in frustration. Salt's mother had passed away only two months ago.

"Salt, doing things in a cute way doesn't matter." Her smile vanished and she looked confused. "The teacher absolutely doesn't care if your scribbles are cute or not. He checks them for accuracy. You could draw the cutest things in the world, be the cutest figure in all of mankind, but you are absolutely nothing without accuracy and meaning. Do you understand, Salt Augustus? I'd prefer to not hear anymore of this, "cute" business from now on, okay?"
Salt stood there in defeat, opening her mouth several times in an attempt to argue, but simply nodded after a while.
"Go to your room and do your homework."
"Yes, father." She replied softly, holding back tears.

Before Salt knew it, the tears she'd held back from that time were making an appearance in her eyes right now. The large, verdant orbs hidden by glasses began to moisten, pebbles of liquid gathering at their sides. "O-Oh, I-I'm so terribly sorry, I don't know what's come over me..." She pulled out a handkerchief and took off her glasses, dabbing her dewy eyes. "I-I've never been called...that before." The small girl looked down at her lap and managed a timid smile. "Thank you, though. It's kind of you to say."

His scooting over to peer over her shoulder at her class schedule made her heart accelerate. She wasn't used to close proximity and wasn't very much comfortable with it, either. Her blush darkened. "B-Biology II?" Salt stammered out, finally making the connection. She clasped her hands together happily, completely missing his high-five.

"That's wonderful! I've not gone to the class, either. The teacher appears to have not shown up, yet. I've procured the syllabus, however." She reached over and produced a thick stack of papers with annotations and notes written perfectly all over it. Her handwriting looked like typed script.

"You've not missed the class, I'm just getting a head start on my work. This is simply a list of the second semester standards we will be reviewing. I've learned them already - the work done here is simply for refreshing my memory."

Salt was looking over her work for any mistakes, mind thinking about the problem she was completing prior to meeting Lane. In her thoughts, Salt only caught the end of his sentence. "-any food? I seem like a fatass just eating."

Again, her cheeks became inflamed with the vulgar words. She shook her head shyly, unsure of how to answer to that. Did he want to share food with her? Salt was a little hungry, but didn't want to be a bother.
