The first day out of the infirmary meant that Taym was back on schedule for being tested against his clones. It meant that he got a text from Sunny stating that he wasn't going on a mission (which would probably be better off unburdened by his shitty life choices) and that he shouldn't eat a large breakfast ( ha). The routine for testing usually went as follows: A tech would escort Taym and his handler to the elevator and to the little library where the other three versions of him waited with varying degrees of hatred (Canary, 7) and fear (Canary, Ezekiel) directed his way upon entry. Most of the tests so far had been physical and somewhat standard. Today however, Taym would glimpse very familiar equipment in the small room across the hall.

The look he'd given Ever when he met him at the lab doors was partly withering and partly guilty, and he mutely offered him a cigarette, the closest he was going to get to an apology. "When I asked you to sign up for this I didn't figure they'd prioritize clipboard-holding over your other s**t," he said, sounding more like he was accusing him of something than talking his way around sorry. and be blue /chronological backtracking

Ever hadn't dressed up this time: was in the battered, worn jeans, perhaps because he'd been planning to go on a dirty and potentially dangerous mission. So he took the cigarette without a thank you, and squinted at Taym a bit as he tucked it into his shirt pocket. "They're just at some lighthouse or something." But he sounded, maybe, a little bit bitter -- and if it was because of the beefy-man-armed picture that Cee had sent him, well, Taym didn't need to know that. Let him think it was a sense of duty. He'd follow Taym down, going quiet as he did.

"Caelius and an urgent text summons and the lighthouse all at once pretty much inevitably results in some ******** disaster and then a lecture on personal failures as a follow-up, if it's any ******** consolation. ******** Caelius," he added childishly. He did not comment on the cigarette situation. He wasn't really in a position to, and it burned to know it. Instead he shared Ever's sudden silence, the uneasiness returning. It hadn't gotten easier to lay eyes on the test subjects underground, not exactly, but it had become more normal. He'd had time to develop a conscious resistance. Nonetheless he went tense next to Ever as soon as they were in sight--and then fell motionless when, as was his habit, he swept his eyes searchingly from one side of the hallway to the other. Normally this reeked of him formulating an escape plan. Today it was simply arrested halfway through. <******** Dr. H too," he said, very very quietly.

"I would definitely ******** Dr. H." Ever offered it without hesitation, his eyes sliding onto Taym again as he said it -- and there was, finally, just a glimmer of a smile. This made up, partly, for his missing out on whatever was happening at the lighthouse.

A large hand gently pressed on Ever's back, ushering him forward as the Dr. murmured, voice low, "Well I certainly can't fault you for taste, my dear." Stepping past the two, the doctor spoke to the room, "Today we begin chemical testing. Due to the nature of said chemicals, it will be the last set of tests for several days." Ezekiel, of all things, looked disappointed at that. H turned to Taym, "You will not be allowed to go on missions or take on duties until Monday. You will not spar or attempt courses, do you understand, Mr. Thompson? It is for the safety of others moreso than yourself."

"I spent," he said flatly, temporarily ignoring Ever's presence and as a result being more free than perhaps he ought to have been--especially unusual given that he'd been in the middle of giving him the world's most disgusted look, "days without anything stronger than a ******** Tylenol. Don't ******** toy with me."

The doctor waited patiently as if he had all the time in the world. Not far from Taym, Canary began to get restless.

For his part, Ever just went remarkably still -- and, kept his mouth shut for a miracle, blinking at Taym and quite pointedly not looking at H. His smile had slipped away, at last.
Maybe he wanted to ask a question but, for the moment, he decided not to.

"Why no work?" he said finally. "Why other people's safety, what kind of bullshit is that? Have you been watching those videos out of the school basement?"
He'd laughed at them. It was considerably less funny now.

"How human do you think you are right now, Obadiah? And do not," the doctor added, "treat us to your views on morality, for godsake. Physically, how human do you think you still are?"

Of all things, his eyes wandered to Ever, watching him sideways and then stubbornly refusing to answer.

The doctor smiled, "The correct answer is not quite. Certain substances can make even a normal human more susceptible to outside influences. Sometimes being a hunter helps defend against this, other times it opens the door wide open."
A pause and again, "Have you decided to opt out? No one here will judge you for desiring to remain clean to whatever degree you still are capable of such. You've done so well, after all."
