OOC

This ORP is open to both newbie hunters and experienced hunters! This isn't a formal orientation, so the focus is on getting feedback and making future orientation sessions perfect. Feel free to socialize!

The posters have been up on the noticeboards for days, and texts dispatched to newbie hunters especially. The rest relies on word of mouth.

There's an "Open House" vibe for this, the dress rehearsal of Camille Ryland and Obadiah Thompson's pet project: there's a table full of food that, despite the crescent moons on Taym's coat, looks to be mostly normal (Edith is present, and so there are some offerings that might be best sampled with caution), and it feels less like a lecture than a welcoming party.

The classroom is meticulously neat and carefully-restored, with fresh windows letting in air and sunlight and well-scrubbed floors. The chalkboard running along one wall bears a spiderweb crack, but other than that the room seems more new than like new, with freshly-laid linoleum tile floors and neat rows of matching, well-kept folding chairs, and extras arrayed along the walls for the more experienced Hunters who've been invited to attend and supply feedback. Someone (Cami) has seen fit to adorn the classroom with motivational posters. A HANG IN THERE kitten is strategically arranged to gaze past Taym's shoulder once he's up in front of everyone. And on every seat there is a folder, with more for the taking at the front of the room.

The first item in the folder is a brightly-colored pamphlet for newly-depodded Hunters compiled by Cami. The rest of the pages are print-outs: a loose map of the Island with particularly dangerous areas marked, as well as the location of major buildings, Town landmarks, and training courses; a sheet of contacts split up by division.

Wake-up Pamphlet

Quote:
Welcome to Deus Ex!

Deus Ex is not only the organization that you've contracted yourself to be a part of, it's also an island in the Bermuda Triangle. We'd like to welcome you to your new home.

Divisions

You've noticed the symbol on your coat, I'm sure. It represents the divisions within the overall organization. They are Sun, Moon, Life, Death, and Mist. What do they do? Well:

  • Sun: Front line offense. Lead: Allan.
  • Moon: Front line defense and aid. Lead: Edith.
  • Life: Research and experimentation. Lead: Doctor H.
  • Death: Intelligence and surveillance. Lead: Caelius.
  • Mist: Everything and anything. Lead: Lance.

It is important that you understand your role in the organization and show respect to your leads. Some are more serious than others but all are deserving of your immediate respect.

Day to Day

What should you be doing with your time? Depending on your division there may be specific goals and tasks. Barring that you should visit the training fields, familiarize yourself with the patrol routes around the islands, and make friends in the infirmary. Why the infirmary? You will, at one point or another, end up there.

Deus Ex is dangerous. Accept this now and live your life according to this rule. Ask for help if you are unsure. If you see, feel, or hear something exceedingly strange report it to someone ASAP.

FEAR and Fighting

FEAR is not just an emotion it is also the power we are given by our weapons. Yes, they talk to you in your head. No, you're not going crazy. They give you two main benefits with FEAR: your shield and your attack. Your FEAR shield is what keeps you from being immediately slaughtered in battle. Pay attention to it. If it breaks, run away. Second is your FEAR attack that should be used, in battle against our enemies, as often as you can manage it.

There are training dummies on the training field as well as other Hunters that you can test these abilities on. It is highly recommended you spend time learning how to at least defend yourself in a fight. There are also various training courses should you feel up to the challenges of them.

Please remember that while you are now more durable you are not immortal. The training fields have dampeners to prevent permanent injury. You should not spar anywhere else.

Technology

Those of you who brought technology to the island will realize that it does not work. You have been given a phone that has been specially modified to work, something we call 'runic tech'. Any technology you have or purchase in the future will have to be modified to be runic before it will work and must be paid out of pocket to the Life technicians. There is no internet there is only the Deus intranet.

Once a month there will be a larger orientation class held in the old school. Please feel free to contact Camille Ryland (###-####) if you have any questions or would like to know when the next orientation will take place.

You are not alone! We are here for you and can't wait to meet you. Welcome home!

The final sheet is a form for feedback after the meeting's over: things that were good, things that need work, suggestions for vital information to include in the welcoming materials and the lectures.

Also on each chair is an index card and a pencil, and a box marked "Questions" makes it obvious that it's for the benefit of those who have things to ask but don't have the stomach for speaking in front of a crowd.

Taym is not milling around in the cluster of new folks and curious onlookers. Instead he's twice excused himself for a cigarette and now he's on his third, standing in the doorway that leads out into the overgrown jungle courtyard and looking altogether too calm and incredibly pale. In contrast, Cami is in the thick of everything, making sure everyone has a folder, a pamphlet, and a doughnut. Every so often she looks back to make sure that Taym is still present.

OOC

Feel free to interact while people settle in! Quote Rejam or chromaticore for interaction with Taym or Cami, respectively. Also present: Edith, Moon lead, but she is here to observe.

Taym and Cami will get things started eventually, and after that there will be one brief post a day with material covered by various volunteers. After each post there'll be a break while the presenters/Taym/Cami go over the material and to give people time to talk/mark their forms, and there'll be a final winding-down period at the end for last minute donut acquisition gathering feedback, taking questions and answers, etc.

Nothing crazy or traumatic is going to happen, I promise, so this shouldn't have too much impact on your RP timelines!

Thank you to everyone who helped us with this and to everyone who's posting in the ORP. We really appreciate it.

After this ORP, all the information will be put into a one-time thread to represent new training for all new hunters. Yay!

Kostya believed in doing his due diligence. He'd never awoken any new hunters, but given the introduction he and Mimsy had received (Hello, good morning, you are now a woman with extremely large assets), an improvement to the current process could be nothing but helpful.

As such, he made sure to attend, and covertly snapped some cool-guy-in-action photos for a certain redhead that was off island.

Leslie shuffled in, out of obligation, and took a seat in back after collecting the handouts he refused to read. As always, he wasn't in his coat: instead, he was swaddled in a too-big and too-old grey hoodie that likely hadn't started grey.

He'd seen the posters and had, at the time, thought he'd just ignore everything. He wasn't really sure what good some sort of newbie orientation woudl do since things seemed to change so often (and dramatically) around the place for something like that to really be useful. It wasn't like you could really prepare someone for all the s**t he'd been flung though so far.

Despite that he found himself wandering into the orientation anyway. If nothing else he could at least see who was saying what and see if anyone was going to spout any more BS.

Things looked a little brighter though when he realized Taym was working on it. He hadn't really interacted with him much after the tournament but he heard things. After checking the pamphlets and trying not to disturb anything he went in search of the other man. He hadn't expected to find him outside smoking but to each his own.

"Hey, um ... not sure if you remember me. You running this," he waved a hand behind him. "whole welcome thing?"

"Not by myself." The tone was defensive, as though he'd been fielding insults for a while which, in truth, he had (deservedly: Taym was an a*****e and not the most welcoming person on the planet, to put it mildly). It took him a minute to find the name, but he did: "Inoke, right?"

He turned his head away to exhale, gazing grimly past Inoke's shoulder through the door to everyone arriving, mostly for the sake of shooting Leslie an unimpressed "I'm watching you" look.

"Thanks for showing up," he added, very belatedly. No wonder he'd been fielding insults. "The more people I have here telling me what we can do better, the more improved the first real one will be."

"Yea, Inoke." He nodded. "Pretty sure putting 'everything' on the suggestion sheet doesn't actually help though." Even if that was starting to be his opinion at this point. "Are any of the higher-ups supposed to be here or is it just the newbies and those of us who actually do the dirty work?"

He hoped to god that Caelius wasn't going to show up. Last thing anyone new needed was to hear one of his 'go die for the betterment of humanity' speeches.

"I wasn't gonna show honestly but I'm kinda tired of just waiting around training until someone decides they need to throw us to the lions again so if others have good suggestions." He shrugged slightly. "all the better"

He bristled, just slightly, but managed to calm it down in the time it took him to take an agitated drag.

"We're only trying to cover absolutely essential ground here--everything else needs to come at the hands of division specialists and trainers who handle relevant work, and anyway there's only so much a person can absorb in one day. As to the rest of it: Edith's here or will be, she's my lead--" this still felt strange to say, and when Inoke had met Taym he'd still been under Caelius's thumb "--but we're trying to keep this as much in the hands of regular hunters as possible. It's just--" he hesitated "--easier for everyone," he settled on tactfully.

"Edith? I thought you were ... did you change divisions?" You could do that? Not that he wanted to, he'd suck as anything else, but he didn't know they'd actually let people change from whatever 'slot' they'd been put into at the start.

He nodded slightly at the rest of it though. "Would be nice if a little more was in the regular hunters hands. I mean if more of us got involved in day to day things? Might help." It at least would make him feel less like he was just a sheep waiting for the slaughter.

"Not sure help is the right word either but it's not like we're five year olds that need to hold daddy's hand"

Edith sat on a windowsill in the back, lending both a certain weight of official approval as well as a stern air of no shenanigans. On the other side in a chair just a shade too small for his sturdy frame, the new Life assistant, Mary Worth, sat playing a hunter version of Angry Birds on his phone. Muttering to himself, the man wore ugly Hawaiian like a uniform (and not a bit of actual uniform present upon his person) and seemed entirely engrossed in the game. Head bent over his phone, most people wouldn't notice that his eyes were scanning the room and not focused on the screen at all.

Bix and Cee arrived together. It was a little known fact that Bix had been the one to wake her up, and gotten punched as a result. Now they were gym buddies and Bix was fed a steady stream of island gossip that he was able to filter back to Ceres. Cee got the safety of a reliable fully-ranked buddy, and Bix got all his girly gossip needs fulfilled. Ceres was probably the only one with strong words on the subject like 'don't bring her here because she'll try to rope us into a threesome'.

Bix was, appropriately, red in the face from whatever the petite brunette had said, and Cee was almost hanging off of his arm as she regaled him with some slightly raunchy tale from home.

Bix gave the room a cool wave as he extracted himself from Cee's kung-fu grip. The young woman was happy enough to mingle now, drifting past the food to give Taym a smile and finger waggle.

Sherry was there, somewhere. Out of the way, waiting until she would be needed.

Which was fine.

She was taking these last few minutes to go over her talk again. Did she have everything? Would she forget anything?

No, no. She'd prepared. She had this. Of course. Probably.

Jordan waited near the front of the room, scanning the slowly gathering group thoughtfully. He might seem subdued to those who knew him, quieter than his usual friendly disposition, but he nodded to anyone who caught his eye.

His gaze caught briefly on Mary, observing that the assistant was not as unaware of his surroundings as he appeared to be, but he did nothing to indicate that he'd noticed or call attention to it.

A trainee had gone out to talk to Taym; Jordan watched what he could see of the encounter through the door, and decided that there probably wouldn't be an argument. He couldn't hear the conversation, and Taym looked jittery and snappish, but that was the man's default.

---

Noah slipped into the room and found a seat near the back, trying not to be noticeable. It wasn't like he really needed to be at a newbie orientation, but maybe it would be a good idea to hear what they had to say.

"We're working on it," he said grimly. "A little at a time."

His eyes were wandering over Inoke's shoulder, and despite the fact that he was talking to the trainee, he nonetheless found time to shoot Bix an eyebrow-lifted expression of consternation at Cee's presence (Cee disregarded entirely), and then to look for, and find, Jordan. He fixed the Sun hunter with a flat, unreadable look, studying him, careful, as if vaguely surprised to see him there at all but too polite to indicate it.

"Thanks again for showing up," he said to Inoke, stepping out his cigarette, then stooping to retrieve the butt before he stepped back inside and made a beeline for Jordan.

"Glad you made it," he said lowly. It was less friendly than it could have been, but it didn't sound sarcastic, exactly.
