Shanta's family is second from the top in her tribe, with her father being the chief's adviser.

Kumar - Shanta's father, and the adviser to the chief. Kumar frequently attends elven gatherings in the chief's place, such as the annual Spring Festival, and works hard to maintain intertribal connections. He speaks some English, enough to communicate with the safer humans. His income is mainly used to support his daughter. Kumar is very gentle and cares very much for his daughter's happiness. He doesn't mind that he hasn't seen her in a long time, so long as she's enjoying herself. Keeps tabs on Priya, though, just in case.
Daeva - Shanta's mother, and one of the best chemists in the middle east. Daeva once lived in another village and agreed to marry Kumar after his elaborate proposal scheme went hilariously awry. Daeva's income is one of the largest in the village, and is mostly spread amongst the village to help support the rest of them. She makes a lot of money trading on one of the only safe routes in the desert. Daeva is a very traditional elf and is disappointed in the road her daughter has been following. She has also been searching for a new assistant, since she's soon going to lose Hari once he marries Pari.

Tara - Tara, Shanta's rebellious best friend was the chief's daughter. Refusing to follow customs, she cut her hair short and slashed her sari so the tattered fabric fell around her knees. She frequently went out with Shanta on Shashi to explore the sand dunes. After a particularly traumatic incident, however, Tara was banished from the tribe. What happened to Tara after that is unknown, but considering how harsh the desert is to lone elves, it's very easy to connect the dots.
Hari - Hari used to date Tara until their relationship got out and a large scandal followed. Sitting on the lowest rung of the social ladder, Hari usually helps Daeva with shipping potions to and from locations. After an eventful Spring Festival in Shanta's second year, Hari ended up getting engaged to Muna's cousin Pari. He still lives in the village, helping Daeva deliver her potions, but that's going to change soon with the wedding fast approaching.
Daksha - Shanta's fiance. Daksha, the son of a magic carpet salesman, was very kind and always tried to do what he thought was best for people. Unfortunately, this led to a lot of friction between his loved ones when what he thought was right conflicted with their interests. Daksha inherited his father's skill in the magic carpet business and would have succeeded him had Vivian not murdered him in front of Shanta during the Black Dragon incident.
Priya - Daksha's sister. Priya has just as much skill in carpet making as her late brother, but her abilities were regularly overlooked in favor of her older brother. Regardless, she supported her brother in all of his pursuits, even when their interests collided such as when it came to Shanta. As soon as Shanta appeared with Daksha's body, however, all interest Priya had in Shanta vanished and instead she invoked the Eye, a custom in some villages that calls for equal exchange. Priya does not want Shanta's life for Daksha's - she wants Shanta's pain for hers. Priya nearly fulfilled the Eye at the Spring Festival in Shanta's second year, but due to complications she did not. The Eye is still invoked, and when and how Priya is going to fulfill it is still a mystery.

For the first nine years of her life, Shanta's world was four walls and a door. She couldn't leave her room, because her legs were simply unusable. The village people visited her frequently, but she gradually became more and more irritable over the years. Finally, on her ninth birthday, Shanta was presented with a carpet that she learned to fly quite quickly and named Shashi.
Shanta's attended Merlin for four years and underwent some drastic appearance changes in her second year. Now it's fourth and she can't get out soon enough.

Gage is attractive, but also rather intimidating looking. He has a scar on his face and the right side of his lowerback + both sides of his torso is composed mostly of scartissue. His hair covers one of his eyes, which is also surrounded by scar tissue and a milky white color. He's quite built in terms of muscle, and all of it shows. (Abs, biceps, the whole shebang.) Most notable are his arms, which are both prosthetic. One reaches up to his shoulderblades while the other covers the expanse of his forearm. Both of them seem to have compartments near the top.

Cares nothing for outsiders, though over the years she's gained a fondness for her husband. (Who is at her feet.) Changed her alignment after a long, hard, 12 years (coincidentally how long she's been married to her husband) and now is technically a boomwielder. She's absolutely terrible at it and has no idea what she's doing, but finds enjoyment in terrifying her inlaws with explosions in the house. (The house staff have scolded her about this on more than one occasion.)

Both Gage and his mother lived in poverty until his mother caught the eye of a richer man. Wanting the best for her child, his mother got the man to marry her and the two became provided for by Gage's new stepfather. Raised in a magic community from the start meant that nobody was surprised when Gage received an acceptance letter from Merlin.
Due to an accident in his first year, (one with only vague details due to being covered up) Gage lost both of his arms. His grades dropped immediately but with the help of his father's money, he was able to gain special prosthetics. Determined not to give up on learning magic, he managed to learn how to use his new arms and stayed in school. He chose to become an Alchemist, and is skilled in using fire as an element.

Most of Quinn's family spread out and lost contact soon after. Some still live in her family's original village; others, like her grandparents, moved into the deep woods, away from everyone. They were not banished nor shunned, they just don't live there anymore.

Quinn was raised by her grandparents. Her parents were young when they conceived her and knew they couldn't provide the proper care she would have needed. They lived on the road, never staying anywhere long, and living in their caravan and they knew that wasn't the right way to raise a child. So with a lot of begging, fighting, and yelling they convinced her mother's parents to raise her, while they continued their journey. However, when Quinn was young, she didn't see the bad of their traveling. When they came home after a month, sometimes even half a year, they always brought stories and gifts to shower her with, but still the next morning when she got up they would be gone once again.
On her eighth birthday, however, they decided it was time she join them on their journeys, making their own stories together. Quinn learned all about selling goods, packing things up in a blink of an eye, and quickly developed the parental bond she never fully had before. She did more in those 4 years then most people in a life time, but sadly their happy family came crashing down.
A few months after Quinn turned thirteen her mother fell gravely ill. No doctor or healer on the road knew what was wrong and each day she got worst. They had no choice but to go back to her grandparent's house. They found out she had been hiding an uncommon illness for a long period of time, she just never said anything in the fear of being pitied. Their was no cure for the illness and so after a few months of watching her mother suffer, she passed away.
Quinn's father went into a state of depression and locked himself away from all the outside world. He walked around the house like a zombie and said little to no words. She took care of him and helped do all she could to make him better, but anyone could tell he was lost without his wife. Quinn always hurt when she saw her father like this, and so never bothered him with anything unless it was positive or exciting. So when Quinn told her father she got a letter to Merlin and told him she wanted to be a healer like her mama, it was the first time in a long time she saw him smile.
Tainted and mentally unstable. She has few moments of clarity and intense mood swings.

Vivian grew up with lots of other elf children, but she would wander out of the neighborhood a lot and meet human children too.
Every time she went out, Vivian was yelled at, so after a while she stopped and sent them letters instead. One day, instead of getting a friend’s letter, Vivian got a letter from the Academy. She was very excited and begged to be permitted to go, and her parents let her.

And her parents, or her sisters couldn't open it. Aerykah was immediately grounded, as her parents tried to figure out what happened. Looking at the Sampson family history, it was learned that Aerkyah's grandmother on her mother's side was a magick who attended the Academy in her youth.
After that, it was only a matter of time before her letter came. Aerkyah opted to take the opportunity to learn more about her heritage, and fell in love with the magick society.
Before Aerykah began school, there was a very important person in her life that is now believed to be dead. Aerykah refuses to talk about it, and keeps the memories, and perhaps a scar or two, hidden. She tends to keep those emotions to herself.

In the calm night of the twenty second day of March, there was a child born. Solara was born to a fairly average elven family, raised among the snow elves/elves who had lived in colder regions. She lived and hunted among them, learning their language piece by piece. Much of her time was taken up by studying and practice, as she wished to help her village and her race. What else was there to do really? Solara was raised as a forest-elf, not an urban elf.. But she did keep in contact with an elf she had befriended, who had strayed and become an urban elf. The outside world always interested her but she knew better than to run away. The forest was her home, no matter how cold and no matter how harsh. They had their methods to survive. Her time ticked by as she continued to learn, hunt and live with her brothers and sisters. Life was pleasant.
The letters slowly came, one by one. First it was the eldest brother, then the eldest sister. The letters came for each of the Aeratak children until finally... Solaras came. She had been so excited when it came, she was practically bouncing off the walls of their little home in the trees. After ignoring her mothers warning, and ending up with a bruise on her arm, Solara began packing. She and her mother made tunics and dresses that would better suit the new environment in which she would be living. Her siblings gave her advice and wished her luck as she began her journey to the Academy of Merlin... With a little help from her urban-elf friend, who made sure she had some things that would help her fit into the real world. At the Academy, she begins her first year.

(Making flower crowns, braiding hair, etc.) ● Literally the shittiest sense of direction everywhere except for Justus. ● Works best when thinking independently / working alone. He can take care of himself pretty well, but if other people get involved / affect his actions then his ability to act smartly (or at all) lowers. ● Good at making friends with shady adults. Worryingly good. ● While usually flanked by both Shanta and End, Muna can sometimes be found in Justus alone. (Doing various things.) ● Such as balancing the various jobs he takes, which includes being the local Magic Bakery's apprentice. ● He's also theoretically the Merchant's dealer, but Muna isn't so sure about that ever since the guy skipped town two years ago. ● Has a rather dark sense of humor and tries to keep a light hearted disposition in serious situations. Muna almost never visibly shows distress in a serious situation, preferring to get things done and freaking out later. ● Tends not to show serious emotions about anything, actually. He's very bad at expressing them and will often get a stiff blank expression if he feels legitimately uncomfortable or if a bad topic for him comes up. Acts casual about literally everything unless he's panicking. ● Has a tattoo on his right arm done by the local tattoo artist. It's poetry written in Farsi, and actually rotates on his arm. ● Sensitive thighs and a sensitive head. If you go to pat or ruffle his hair, he'll stop you immediately. ● Despite his appearance, Muna has a pretty smooth/boyish voice. ● Pretty bad at communication/speaking. If he raises his voice or speaks too long/extravagantly he'll get tired. Only uses full sentences when he's extremely worried/serious about something. ● He's pretty good at using a scimitar, but has gotten a bit rusty.
Muna's main channeler is the marble around his neck. It's reddish orange, with a pair of fairy wings inside of it. (He usually doesn't use enough magic to activate the boost that comes from having fairy wings in his channeler.) His also uses the other marbles in his pouch. Muna's third channeler is his tattoo, but he almost never uses it, so it's kind of an unknown fact.

Muna’s biological family is huge. He has tons of aunts and uncles and even more cousins, plus his grandparents are still alive. His mother's side of the family all rather well off due to the family name being kind of a REALLY big deal with desert elves, but after Muna and his parents immigrated Muna hasn’t seen the majority of his family for years. (He has, however, seen his grandparents and three of his most important cousins once or twice since attending Merlin.) His grandparents are of very high standing, and the highest standing of their tribe.
His father's side of the family is the exact opposite. No family on that side, and his father was of pretty poor standing before they left their tribe.

Barad -- Despite being very calm and easy-going, behind his handsome face Barad is actually a huge nerd of a father. He is one hundred percent devoted to his wife and son, and despite acting kind of carefree he's a man who understands how people work very easily. Zoya -- The eldest of all her many (half) sisters and brothers. A strong hearted, sweet woman who Muna gains most of his looks from. Zoya used to be fairly renowned as the eldest daughter of the Amirmoez family, and she taught Muna a lot about their culture. Of technically high standing/noble blood, but her father theoretically disowned her. Her smiles radiate sunshine and she generally charms everyone she meets, though it's rumored she used to be pretty thorny as a teenager. Takes care of the family's apartment and currently has a job at a local plant shop. She's a plant wielder, but due to growing up in the desert isn't very good at all. Considers Shanta and End her own children. Currently, she's pregnant.

Grandfather Amirmoez - A very, very rich and powerful man of noble birth. He's the head of the extremely large Amirmoez family and pretty old now. Gained most of his power through hard work, he's the ever-wise leader of his tribe, though majority of the decisions made for the tribe are made by a Council. A very serious man who finds politicians annoying and troublesome. He's very very kind in his own subtle way, and despite not putting any pressure on his family to stay loyal to him and continue the strength of their bloodline everyone is very loyal to him. Big on consent. He reads teen fashion magazines to try to relate to his children.
Grandmother Amirmoez - Muna's grandmother, and the woman officially married to Grandfather Amirmoez. She was originally part of his (absolutely unused) harem but the life of indulgence and laying around bored her so far to tears she demanded Grandfather Amirmoez to marry her. While initially he refused, eventually she got her way, and she's been living peacefully ever since. While she looks very scary Grandmother Amirmoez is immensely easygoing. Interested in technology and the trends of modern youth.
Afra - The second eldest daughter, after Zoya. She married rich and was intending to have her child take the inheritance from her father, but ended up having twins. (Pari and Ara.) A woman of opportunity, she's insured that at least Ara will still have control of part of the family. Still, she doesn't keep much interest in her children's affairs as long as they get her what she wants. Glad her older sister is gone, because she always felt like she was in her shadow.
Ara - The (slightly older) twin of Pari and cousin of Darius. She's the nag of the group, her knowledge of the family vast and skill in illusion magic unparalleled by any of the other cousins. She and Pari, while the eldest of the group of top cousins, are ranked below Muna due to their mother being Grandfather Amirmoez's second eldest. Despite her formal way of speaking and typically snooty habits, Ara is actually the most rebellious out of the trio of cousins. She cut her hair short and has kept it that way despite heavy discouragement, hates books, and does a lot of offensive training. Vapor wielder and Aro-Ace. Muna's tribe has no real concept of sexuality, so she only realized this fact two years ago.
Pari - The (slightly younger) twin of Ara and cousin of Darius. Pari is friendly and very popular, social with all of her family and liked by all of them as well. She doesn't have much responsibility put onto her at all and doesn't get tutored heavily in the same way Ara does. Her skill lies in dancing, which she spent a lot of time doing with all of her free time. Despite her cheerful and reckless attitude, Pari is actually more conscious of satisfying authority and her family than Ara is. While originally she planned to marry rich, somehow she's gotten engaged to Hari, Shanta's old friend. Despite being a very friendly girl she doesn't really hold anyone extremely dear to her heart save for her twin. Her tastes are exactly the same as Muna's, but neither of them ever had a problem with sharing so they get along well in their own way as well.
Elaheh - Mother of Darius and also the third eldest daughter, after Afra. She's the most timid of her sisters, mostly plain and without talent. Severely underestimated and easily looked over, Elaheh grew up with most everybody expecting that she would amount to nothing. Despite this, Elaheh ended up marrying the richest out of her siblings and gave birth to Darius, who has been chosen to take inheritance and control of the tribe. A kind woman who is mindful of others and never had a good relationship with the rest of her siblings. Secretly keeps in touch with Zoya.
Darius - The third of his cousins, ranking directly below Pari, Ara and Muna. Despite being born after Pari and Ara and ranked underneath both the twins and Muna, he's been chosen as the next future leader of the tribe. Due to that Darius spends a lot of time reading and learning, and has been heavily tutored since his youth. While generally an awkward guy and mild mannered, he used to be a kid who was obsessed with adventure and was originally very very close to Muna. (Though before Muna was born, he was best friends with Pari.) Respectful, constantly exhausted, and actually very kind. He has a slightly sarcastic side and can go a little far for the sake of people he cares about. Muna doesn't talk to him much at all anymore. He can act pretty rash when angry or in a state of panic. Trying to get over that.

Firuz - A regular ol human magick with a friendly disposition and sticky fingers. He rescued Muna once or twice and was originally regarded by Muna as his 'most important person' until he realized that the bond he had with Firuz had withered over the eight years they had been forced apart and that Firuz had only kept that title over time just because. Despite all of this, Firuz seems to understand Muna the best from all of his old friends and regards Muna as a younger brother. He was kept locked away for a variety of reasons for eight years and was only released during Muna's first years during the Spring Festival. He's still catching up with modern technology and still recovering from the effects of being isolated for so long, but otherwise is doing quite well with the other two. Still keeps in contact with Muna, and unlike Luay/Aafia he seems to be the most understanding of Muna's refusal to join their entourage again. Used to have a little brother that died when he was a teenager, which was originally the reason for his attachment to Muna. Not much is known about that fact, though Muna would probably explain the story to anybody who asked him.
Aafia - A blind desert dwarf who tends to keep her beard close to her chin. She's kind and good at soothing other people and is primarily a healer who keeps track of the other two. Luay looks over her and generally never leaves her side. Despite always keeping a smile on her face she's a pretty stubborn and pushy person. Muna knows the least about her and how she joined the other two, and her story in general seems shrouded in the most mystery.
Luay - A panicky nonbinary desert elf who came from a tribe who got into a lot of conflict instead of dealing with everything through politics. (Like Muna's tribe primarily does.) They tend to cry a lot and stutter often, and despite being the main offense and defense of the group of 'thieves' the thought of hurting anyone will literally bring them to tears. Keeps in contact with Muna. A nasty scar goes down their face, giving them a little bit of a scary appearance. Only gets terrifying if either Aafia or Firuz are being threatened. (art)

Muna's tribe bounced between various seasonal locations that spanned across the first Persian Empire, as they have been doing for centuries. While originally Muna's mother was planning on marrying a fellow of a different tribe for the sake of ties and money, the charm of an urban elf with nontraditional views drew her in and she married Muna's father instead.
Muna himself lived in the tribe until he was around 7. His grandfather publicly disapproved of his daughter's marriage and while his parents were a shunned couple, he was very much loved by his grandparents and generally treated decently because of his grandparent's standing. (Though most of the tribe was a tad wary about him.)
He eventually left with his parents for western urban elf society. His father joined an organization while his mother taught him his culture and how to hide his ears with the illusion magic unique to desert elves. Muna lived in a dingy apartment complex for the rest of his life and went to a rather poor mundane school until he got a letter from Merlin and found it a perfect chance to lessen the burden on his parents. So he went on his merry way.
Muna was cursed until near the end of his first year, and was mute until the curse broke during a trip during the spring break of his first year. While he's open about the fact he was cursed, Muna is very tight lipped on all other aspects of the situation.
He's been attending school for three years, and during this time has gone through a lot of changes. Currently, Muna really wants to get out of school as soon as possible.

Averill is pretty much the definition of 'stocky'. Unlike a lot of other short-asses at the school, he's not willowy or scrawny. Coming out of 8 years apprenticeship in blacksmithing has left him with pretty well developed upper arm muscles, a wide stance, and callouses on his hands. His skin is a dark tan, with some old burn scars here or there. His hair is light blonde and quite short, and seems to be a bit fluffy. It blends into his light blonde sideburns, but his facial hair doesn't seem to be growing on the rest of his chin- much to his dismay. He has vividly green eyes which he likely inherited from his mother, and surprisingly has dark eyelashes. It is possible that the rest of his hair will grow darker over time too.
While he doesn't know much about his mothers side at all, Averill could probably list back 3 generations of Hammershods from the top of his head. Dwarves are pretty proud of their heritage, and being in an underground city full of them means you get to know them pretty well.

Dwarven father (Ropata Hammershod), is everything typical of a dwarf; practical, blunt, kindhearted, a big fan of self sufficiency and the power of community. He's not particularly old or young, has dirty blonde/brown hair and copper eyes. Considerably more calloused than Averill.
Human mother (Yvanne), is someone Averill doesn't know much about. She definitely has green eyes, and is taller and probably thinner compared to Ropata. She was obviously not afraid to be independent, but was very affectionate, from what he can remember.
Human on his mothers side, Averill's parents split when he was young, and he grew up inside a Dwarven city. He was a little slower than the other 8 year olds when it came to banging out horseshoes on the anvil, but personally he didn't mind, seeing as he could pat them all on the head. By the time his teenage years rolled around, it was fairly obvious Averill didn't quite fit in- he began hitting his head on ceilings, and noticing how his facial hair was just not as impressive as the other guys. Lets not get this tangled here- he wasn't an outcast, nor was he particularly popular for his differences.
Dwarf society is very tolerant, however, its ladies are very picky. If a dwarf lady has a more impressive mustache than their date, everyone can tell its not going to work out. For Averill, this was extremely annoying. There was no sudden moment of magic- a letter simply came, and he took it up, with a blessing from his father. Dwarf society could use a little more magic, he said, and passed his son an amulet of infertility, just in case

Ari is around 4'8 or so, and she has quite the impressive set of muscles. Ari is pretty much thick everywhere due to muscle mass and chub. Tan skin and legs full of odd scars that she won't talk about. Ever. Has an eyepatch over one eye and a scar over the other one.

She makes smithing look like its nothing, makes cooking look so nonchalant when it tastes pretty well done, makes getting friends look second nature. You get the idea. When she didn't receive a letter for the academy, just smiled and wished her younger sister the best in the world(sure enough to make Kili seethe a bit before departing). Despite being highly jealous of her, Kili always wished the best for Mornia and considers her one of her closest friends.
Born to a dwarven woman prostitute. Of course, living under this style of business, she met many different kinds of suitors. Kili was second born; originally, she was to be a twin, but complications made to see this not occur.
Living day to day was rough. People turned their heads away and considered her family as outcasts. Despite the hardship, their mother did everything she could to support her two daughters. When the time came, she enrolled Kili under the apprenticeship of a decent blacksmith. Kili quickly realized that this apprenticeship would be a living hell for however long that it would last. And seriously wondered how the heck her sister and everyone else did it so easily. Time continued on, and finally what felt like an answer to her prayers, the fated later fell into her hands. Highly curious(and extremely happy her sister never received one), she sought out their mother on instinct. But, she had little information. Knowing only that the academy was for the magick folk. Aware that she would be unable to stop her youngest's constant curiosity, her mother bestowed Kili her blessings. Within a week, Kili said her goodbyes to her family and left for Merlin Academy.
