(Metal Loot Roll)
A choking rumble slipped out of Tohru's throat, despite his best attempts to conceal it. It could have easily been mistaken for a choking sob or a cough. The rest of the group could see how someone as... emotionally unfit as Tohru would break down under these awful mountain conditions.
"Hey, wait a minute," Vega drawled suspiciously as she paused to inspect the smaller Kiandri boy. Tohru tipped his head down, his eyes slipping closed as he raised a hand to cover his mouth. Vega snorted and reached out to lightly tug the end of his hair. His gaze flickered back to her, golden orbs shining, not with tears, but with amusement..? The Orderite's brow furrowed. "Are you laughing at us?" She wasn't so much offended as she was confused and maybe a bit concerned. The heat of the day must be getting to him, if the first time any of them had ever heard him laugh (or even look mildly amused) was in this dismal place.
"N-no," Tohru whispered as he flicked his hair out of Vega's grasp. "Of course not. I was just-" He glanced to the side, rubbing nervously at his arm. "It's not so bad, is it? It's a little dry, a little gloomy, very little action, but... you still have your friends." When he'd lived on Eowyn, he'd only had Kasen, sparingly, at that. It seemed like forever ago... "You're not hurt or hungry or lonely. You're just bored." He sucked in a breath. Right now, he could stop himself from saying anything he'd regret later. But that had never gotten him anywhere before. Even now he was off on an adventure with these people he only barely knew just because he'd said a few words to them on a boat. What did he really have to fear? "My father told me once, 'Only stupid people get bored.'"
The way they gaped at and scrutinized him could've easily made the Kiandri believe they were all shy a few marbles. That or they were a pack of wild beasts about to tear apart a piece of prey. With an embarrassed flush, he tipped his head down again. "I'm sorry. It wasn't my place to-"
"No, no. You're right," Vega intoned, clapping him on the shoulder. "We're a sprightly group of people. I think I know of something we can do to satiate our need for excitement for the day." Tohru hesitantly lifted his gaze to look at her. Instant suspicion clawed at his insides as Vega beamed innocently at him.
She was obviously waiting for some kind of answer. He swallowed. "What's that?" He forced the question from his lips with no small amount of distrust.
Vega took one step back away from him, her hand reaching toward her pack where she kept her battle-ready gauntlets. "You acted like you wanted to learn how I use these things, back when we were attacking Mara at the port. Of course, you went and got yourself hurt pretty badly, so I didn't have much of a chance to teach you anything."
Tohru's limbs instinctively tucked toward him, his arms drawing up to his chest defensively. It had been several days since that attack... Between Cela's Ysali magic and the twins' Aedaun magic, he'd had a whole slew of people helping him heal. he clenched his fingers on the injured hand, feeling little more than a faint tingle of discomfort spreading across his bones. He'd only been thinking of saving Cela at that time, not of continuously trying to mimic her... He didn't want to get hurt like that again. "I-I don't have gloves like you do," he murmured. "There's no way I can..." His head tipped to the side, caramel strands of hair falling into his face.
Vega tightened the gauntlets around her wrist, securing them neatly in place. "That's not true," she informed Tohru tartly. "I need them to protect my knuckles. I don't have anything else." She closed the distance between them with a broad grin plastered over her face. "You have magic to defend yourself with! You'll find you can use the exact same principle as I do. Improve on it, even. You aren't limited to just your fists. And that's a great asset."
Tohru huffed and itched at his arm. He didn't need words to let them know how unconvinced he was.
Vega huffed and straightened to her full height. "You're always free to make your own decisions, but I'm not giving you much of a choice!" Her voice crackled on the last word as she threw her weight forward. Tohru didn't even have the chance to look at her before her fist crashed into his shoulder, lifted him from his feet and physically threw him at the dusty ground below. He squeeked in alarm as his back hit the ground. "You don't have to fight, but if you can't at least defend yourself, then you're gonna get hurt."
His golden orbs were wide as he scrambled back to his feet, now with several paces between him and the hefty Orderite. Her punches had enough force to shatter rock. Tohru swallowed as he hesitantly twitched his aching shoulder. It hurt, sure. Already, he felt an oncoming bruise sinking into his muscle. But it wasn't broken. Still worked like it should... Vega had taken it easy on him, for some reason. His gaze flickered briefly to the rest of the cluster. "Come on, Tohru!" Cela shouted encouragingly as she pumped her fist in the air.
Vega stood patiently and at the ready right where Tohru had left her. She put her hands on her hips and cocked her head at him. "Well," she demanded.
Tohru stared at her. It had hurt where she'd punched him. Despite that, she wasn't being cruel. It wasn't like the beatings disguised as battles he'd had with Amara... Even now, at least he had someone cheering for him. Slowly, he nodded, and Vega cast him a wayward grin. "Alright then."
He distinctly recalled thinking that Vega wasn't fast. Of course there was always the chance that he was simply a slow, bumbling idiot, but that wasn't very inspiring... He tried to duck out of her way at the last second, but the Orderite woman grabbed his wrist and yanked him forward so she could land a solid punch right in the middle of Tohru's chest that left him winded and gasping for breath. "C'mon," Vega griped as she waited for him to recover. "This'll be over before you learn anything, if you keep that up..."
Tohru winced, his fingers laying over his chest as if he could claw the air back into his lungs. 'Sorry... I can't-' He trapped the words behind his lips before they had a chance to bubble free. This was no good... It had never been any good. There had been a time when he thought he could live peacefully in his garden, but those notions had long since been dashed. He'd already given up too much of his life to words like 'can't'.
He heaved in a breath, forcing his uncooperative organs to work with him as he righted himself. Vega was right. He could run away from her attacks, from any attacks as much as he liked. But if he did that, he'd just have to keep running. He'd never get anywhere. He'd been too hesitant to save Ithric, too unreliable to spare Ravi, too weak to defend himself from his own mother, of all people. Tohru glanced to the group of people around him. On some level, they knew. They knew what he was, knew that he wasn't happy with where he stood now.
"So are you just going to stand there?"
He looked back at Vega at her words. She grinned like she could see into his thoughts and knew what he was feeling. She probably knew his answer before he did, himself. Tohru shook his head. "No."
When he moved, it was of his own desire. He had no intention of hurting Vega. She'd never meant him any harm, even if she had punched him two or three times. His mind immediately ruled out using magic on her. Too dangerous and too unpredictable. She probably expected his thoughts were along those lines. The first punch he threw, she caught easily, her larger hand almost enveloping his completely. "That won't work, Tohru," she warned as she pulled him forward. Her foot braced against his chest and she kicked him away, sending his tiny frame sailing through the air before he crashed to the ground. "You're too tiny and untrained to be charging in with your fists. You don't have a weapon to block with. You leave yourself completely open. Just look at your situation! You can't fight every opponent the same way."
Tohru rolled to his hands a knees, a mewl slipping from his lips as he pushed himself up to look at her. At least she was patient. Staring at her hulking frame, he suddenly felt like an idiot for diving in so thoughtlessly. She was bigger, stronger, well-trained.
Literally all he had on her was magic, and he still doubted his capabilities to use it against someone in a mere practice match. he bit his lip.
He was faster.
Especially with a little burst of Kiandri power. He wasn't actually using magic on her, so... It seemed reasonable. His fingers just barely left the ground before he shot a bolt of lightning down his body and through his feet. He was propelled forward. There might've been a look of surprise on Vega's face, but Tohru only glimpsed it if there was. She caught him as easily this time as she had after his first attack. The Kiandri ignored the irked feeling in the back of his head, and swung his feet off the ground to kick at her without hesitation.
Vega blocked his feet with her forearm, then pushed him away. Tohru squeaked in surprise as the ground came up to meet his face, seeing as he wasn't able to get his legs back underneath him in time. He scrambled back to his feet, gaze quickly finding Vega, who... had also ended up on the ground somehow? He tipped his head at her, golden orbs trailing to the slick sheet of ice that had appeared under her feet.
"Zera," Vega shouted. "Why did you do that? This is a one-on-one-! Oh..." The Aiskala woman nodded toward a figure descending across the crags, flanked by others of its kind. The Mara bodies scaled down the rocks with ease, making short work of their approach. A few of them shot rocks down at the Magescians, who were able to dodge with practiced ease. Vega itched at her cheek. "I guess falling on my arse is better than being hit in the head with a rock..." She sighed. "Tohru, we'll have to finish up later. I hope you're still feeling spy enough to take down a few boulder punching bags."
Tohru snorted softly. Yeah, he'd punched one, once. Didn't like it too much. Still there were more Mara then there were two-leggers this time. Vega and the others wouldn't really need his help, but it would be rude not to give it a shot.
Okay.
Around him, the others were on the offensive, blasting all sorts of magic at their attackers before the Mara could reach them. Zera's Aiskala magic, Cela's Ysali, the twins' Aedaun and Diabi. Stones cracked before they even reached the Magescians in the valley. Vega took to defending her comrades from anything being thrown at them. Boulders were no match for her gauntlets.
And Tohru... He could throw his magic around, like the others, but lightning magic against rocks wouldn't do a whole lot of good... What had Vega said? He couldn't fight every opponent the same way... The Kiandri sighed at the rocks. The ones that had survived the initial onslaught were pretty much on top of them now. Vega moved forward. And all the mages moved back, as they preferred to keep their distance. Tohru didn't have the same offensive capabilities as Vega. His magical attacks weren't as strong as the others. he could stay back and stay out of the way, or he could come up with a new plan.
He'd already proven that he could give himself enough force- enough speed to puncture through rock. He just ended up hurting himself... The others were making short work of the group of Mara. They'd been noticed when they were still pretty far away, so only very few of them had actually made it close enough for Vega to start breaking. Tohru watched, and waited, holding himself still and at the ready until there was but one left. He could attack one. If he failed, his friends would probably defend or assist him. Vega did say he needed help with his magic.
"I got this," Tohru whispered as he stepped up to stand next to the Orderite.
She blinked at him, then nodded and moved away. "Alright. Try not to hurt yourself."
The last Mara could've been made of delicate crystal, smooth and undaunting. It didn't even look as scary as the ones the rest of his group had plowed into. The shadows cast by the crags covered it, keeping the diamond body from catching the sun and blinding the lot of them.
Tohru plucked at the threads of magic running through him. The power hissed at him in defiance, sparked at his skin and dared him to master it. The Kiandri scoffed. He didn't have time for that. Using small bursts was easier, but not at all what he wanted right now. He didn't want to hurt himself, after all...
"Don't just look at it!" Came Zera's voice.
Tohru crouched and sent a bolt of magic to his feet, launching himself forward. Any other power he could muster, he called to the palm of his hand, collecting the Kiandri magic in a crackling whirlwind that swizzled around his arm. If magic gave him enough force to punch through rock, then it could protect him in just the same way! The sparks hummed about him as he burst ahead, fist flying and crunching through diamond. He waited to feel the burst of pain that would follow the collision. he ripped his arm free of the mass of rocks, relieved to find that he wasn't in any excruciating agony.
But once he was clear of the crumbling diamond, he staggered, faltering backward and flopping onto his backside. "I-I-- What? What is-?" His legs were shaking, his shoulders quivered. The same trembling he felt when he was afraid? Was this just fear? He hadn't really thought...
A shadow peeked over him as the hybrid woman crouched at his side. She looked down at him, watching the confusion flicker through his eyes. "That was... great, and all, but..." Zera itched at the back of her head before sighing. "Well, it was a lot of energy to kill just one Mara." The Kiandri boy blinked at her in confusion. "You don't look used to exerting so much magic. Or energy at all, really."
Tohru panted, licking his lips. "Am I okay?"
"Don't look so scared. You're not hurt. You're tired." She raked her out of her face. "Guess we'll be staying here for a bit. You'll be able to continue on before you know it. But that one..." She tipped her head upward, up to where the Mara had originally descended from. "That one got away... It'll be trouble for us later, I'm sure."
