Wrathful Demigod

Peyton gotten used to the idea that Taym was in the basement, and a new girl was currently residing in his room. It meant she saw him less, it meant the door across the hall was never left partially ajar like an unspoken invitation. It meant she didn't really pass him in the hall much. All in all, there was a distinct lack of Taym in her day to day life, and she missed him.

Direct messages were nice, but they just weren't the same.

So she found herself in the basement, walking slowly down the hall and taking covert, quick glances into the rooms she passed that had only bars for doors. Most of the rooms were empty. She had no reason to think Taym was actually down here at this time of day, nor did she know which room he was in at the moment.

It was a short in the dark, almost literally, that she'd run into him. Which, if she were honest, was alright. There hadn't been a concrete plan in coming down here, only a whim.

"Creedy," he said, in the affectionate, distracted way that normally accompanied his using her last name.

Taym was as catlike on the bare stone and concrete floors of the basement as he was in the grass. It should have been impossible to move like that in a pair of boots but he always did, and he'd sort of magically appeared at her shoulder. Or not too magically--he was moving with a businesslike if somewhat exhausted-seeming stride, and it was past her, with a polite and nervy touch of his fingertips against her shoulder in acknowledgement.

He was in civilian clothes, the messenger bag slung over his shoulder obviously stuffed to bursting and another heavy-looking bag in one hand: Death had been off leave privileges since before Wonderland, and Taym had obviously leapt at the chance to escape for a day. He didn't pause for her--just kept moving in the direction of what was currently his room, which was probably immediately recognizable for the fact that it managed to seem sterile and clean in total contradiction of the fact that it had rusted-out steel bars for a door and a concrete floor. He had apparently refused to relinquish his insistence on white sheets, too.

She jumped as her name eased through the unfriendly quiet of the basement, a girlish squeak echoing around the both of them as he gave her a small touch on the shoulder and slipped past her.

It lift her blinking after him for a second or two before she hurried to catch up, gaze dropping to the over filled bags he was carrying. "Death division isn't grounded anymore, I take it?" That had always seemed an extreme punishment, but then she had never gotten a full story on just how it had come to be. Taym being shot had been her worry priority at the time, and by the time he'd recovered, Death's inability to leave had fallen to the wayside. Small fingers plucked her at the shoulder strap as she followed him into his room. "Get anything good? More books?" God, she hoped he'd bought more books.

Wait, this was Taym. Of course there was more books.

"Where'd you go?" He didn't have to give her any details if he didn't feel like sharing, but she was curious about where, geographically, he'd picked for his first trip off the rock in months.

"Chicago," he said, shooing her plucking fingers irritably away and jabbing a finger at the chair. He'd mimicked the layout of his old room as well as he could down here, and he dumped the contents of the bags onto the bed to start rooting through them, immediately plucking out a nice-looking jacket, tags still attached, and giving it a once-over to see how it had held up from being shoved into a plastic bag for the purposes of transport.

There were, in fact, books--some new ones but mostly older, clearly picked up at a used bookstore. And a laptop box, and a frankly-alarming quantity of liquor unless Taym was planning on setting up a rival to the Red Bull. He had spent a lot of money. It still made his stomach hurt to think about it.

"We are not grounded any more. Maybe someone flushed out a turncoat for Caelius," he added bitterly. If only he knew. "Whatever. I'll take it. What do you need?" Apparently the idea that she might just be coming to see him did not occur to him.

The hand slapping was expected, and she kept the behavior up for another few seconds before falling back and folding into the chair he'd pointed it. Legs tucked up, and she wrapped her arms around them, long sleeves hanging over her hands. She usually wore roomy top layers, and today was no exception. She'd even pulled her scarf down and looped it around her neck a few times.

Her attention was rapt on the items he was unpacking, drinking in the jacket(she approved), the books both old and new, the laptop. "You got a laptop?" Now she was sitting up, leaning forward in the chair so she could brace a hand on the edge of the bed to get a closer look.

"Well whatever the reason he changed his mind, good." Then she frowned looking up at him as she folded back in her seat. "I don't need a reason to want to see my friend." A distinct sulkiness marked her voice, but she swallowed it down quickly. "I barely get to see you anymore, maybe I missed you." Pale eyes narrowed, challenging him to dispute that fact.

"Yes, I got a laptop," he said, ignoring the last part. "Yes, you can borrow it sometimes. No, it isn't runic'd yet. No, there aren't any movies on it yet. No, I don't know how much they're going to charge me. Yes, they'll probably gouge me. I have the money," he finished, sounding more troubled by that than smug. "I have so much ******** money," he added, and, again, there was more despair in it than anything.

Several times int eh course of his barrage of answers she opened her mouth to comment, but he steam rolled over her and actually hit the majority of the things she would have inquired. So by the time he had finished she'd sat back, lips twitched up to one side, and an expression on delicate features that was lost somewhere between endeared and amused, with just a touch of annoyance tugging brows downward. "You could let me take it to get runic'd, they won't gouge me. Hell, if I ask Dwight he might give me a discount." He'd already lent her his laptop multiple times, no questions asked, packed with any movie she requested. This was just a couple steps up from that, right?

<I don't think it's that simple...>

Maybe not, but I bet I'll still get a discount.

To that there was no response.

Toying with her sleeves, she looked up at him. "It's Noah's birthday soon." She dropped it in conversationally, lips pursed. The Sun was going to ask America her opinion on this as well, but a male perspective would be beneficial. "I'm trying to decide what to get him, or do for him. I'd like it to go well."

He examined the back cover of one of the books he'd brought back before tossing it to one side as she spoke, and then started sorting all of them into two neat piles, setting A Canticle for Leibowitz aside.

"Bang him," he suggested distractedly and without even the faintest breath of a pause.

Tanned cheeks darkened a touch as a rosy hue spread along the bridge of her nose. It made her freckles stand out. "Well..." Truthfully, the thought had entered her mind. They really needed to sit down and have a talk about how comfortable they were with each other and if sex was something they could begin seriously thinking about. Peyton felt more or less ready, at least she thought so, but she wanted to know how Noah felt.

Dropping her gaze, she turned her eyes down to the ends of her sleeves as she twisted them around her fingers. "That was an option, yes."

"Happy Birthday to Noah," he said drily. And then, abruptly changing the subject: "Also, yes, thank you. About the laptop. I'd appreciate that." Even though he apparently had so much money that it gave him a complex every time he considered his bank balance. "Maybe you should look into something like that, too. Some way for you two to--watch movies together, or whatever it is that you do," he said vaguely. Clearly Taym had never considered curling up on a couch or in bed and watching a movie together an appealing component of a relationship.

The blush darkened a touch before it began to fade. She still blushed easy, but the rosy color didn't seem to last very long anymore.

"You're welcome." If he turned he'd catch the grin she aimed up at him. If not, maybe he'd hear it in her voice. "I've been thinking about it, actually. Getting a laptop or a tablet. Tablet would be more handy I think, but laptop would let me start a music collection." It was clear she'd put a lot of thought into this already, and seemed to have run into a block. Both seemed like good ideas, but she wasn't sure which she wanted more, first.

"I still want an ipod, also. But what good would it be without something to load music from. We don't have normal internet."

Her lips pursed thoughtfully before she shook her head, shoulders rising in a small shrug. She'd figure it out.

"I think Rep stocks up on leave," he supplied. "Always an option."

He paused in the task of neatly stacking his cigarettes into the empty drawer of the dresser, and looked back over his shoulder at her, voice carefully neutral. "How's that going, by the way? Pretty good, I'm assuming, if--" the tone became gently mocking, a little bit cruel, a little bit fond "--that was an option."

"Yeah, that's true."

He turned, looking her way, and she met those dark brow eyes, smiling. "Really well, I think. I mean, it's all pretty knew to him too, and he kinda second guesses himself when he gets nervous. But he's getting better about it, and I really like him." She toed her boots off, then drew her legs up to fold them Indian style into the chair, hands tucking into her lap.

A little ember of rage flared up, the little suggestion that would never go away that said: do it, take her from him, she'd go to you if you did it right. He didn't even want her, he reminded himself; he just remembered that she used to look at him in a way that made Fiona restless and uneasy and unhappy, a way that he'd ignored at the time, dismissed as unlikely.

And there was, besides, the bitterness that wasn't about Peyton at all but was about the reliability of it, of being in a position to need to second-guess, to be nervous, being in a position to get better about it slowly, the thought of what did Noah to do deserve it that I don't?

Not for the first time he silently hated himself for every time that he'd indulged America. For the fact that he would keep doing it. For the fact that the next bag he upended was full of red-white-and-blue fripperies, a sappy silent nod to a shared moment. He glanced, again, at Peyton, and chose to hate Noah instead of himself, for a while, no matter how irrational it was.

"Good," he said, his voice neutral. "He seems like a good kid. You managed to pry him out of Al's ******** clutches, then? He can do better friends than that."

Talking about Noah had brought the young man to the forefront of her mind, and there was a decidedly sappy quality to the smile that rested on her face. She settled back, slouching a bit in the chair, and watched quietly as he continued sorting the contents of his bags.

When he spoke up again she beamed, teeth flashing in the dimness. "Yea, I guess...no?" And then she blinked, the smile shutting down as what he'd said, and the attached implications, sank in fully. "What?" All that bubbly happiness was just gone. "They're friends, I'm not going to try to make him give up his best friend." Pale eyes narrowed thoughtfully.
