As America entered the dorm building,  she considered taking a shower before visiting Taym but thought the better of it. There was every chance they'd spend the day barely even touching let alone anything more and she'd taken one after waking up a mess on the beach. If her hair was still a poofy tragedy, he'd surely survive. Plus Taym was seeming squirrelly as ******** and the less time he had to make s**t decisions (or even just sit around feeling sad, and wasn't that a kicker, that she was so ******** hung up about some grown man's stupid feelings that she couldn't stand the thought of him being sad for too long) the better.

So she skipped a second shower but had taken a detour to the Moon HQs kitchens. The day was sweltering even after the desert and there wasn't a mission to make it easy to ignore. The basement was actually pretty decent when it got hot like this, cool even without AC,  but they wouldn't stay down there if she could help it.

When America arrived at Taym's nondoor,  it was with a flush from heat and hurry,  hair blatantly refusing it's braid, a small cooler in one hand and a pack of Corona in the other. "We can stay down here if you want," she offered through the bars. "But I'd rather not." To the point as usual.

He was lying on his back fully clothed on top of the neatly-made blankets, and this was not unusual, nor was the fact that he was once again smoking in bed. What was unusual was that he did not have a book at hand; that his phone was set aside on the desk. He was not even, as he sometimes did, idly bouncing an old rubber ball (scavenged from somewhere) idly off the wall, keeping a running score for some imaginary game. He was doing nothing, no distractions propped up in front of his face: just lying motionless in a haze of smoke.

He paused before he glanced at her, and he took in the cooler and the drinks before he paused again and lifted himself onto one elbow, put the cigarette out, and reached to retrieve his coat before he thought better of it and joined her rolling up his sleeves, instead.

"Where to?" he asked quietly, strangely as if she were giving him an assignment.

It had been an unnerving sight and an odd, jarring reminder of the way Konstantin had described waiting for Mimsy to remember him, to give him a space of time where he had purpose. A scrap of thought slid past at first fleeting then taking hold. Was it this tgat had drawn the two together in the first place? Or was it why they fought sometimes? The need for purpose in order to come alive.

The unexpected comparison was furthered by his easy, almost solemn acceptance. "The house. Or one of the tree houses. Or the little farm. Anywhere but here, really." The girl tugged unnecessarily at his sleeve as they left. "Or the beach."

"Not the beach," he said immediately, firmly but without emotion. A pause again, and he added: "Not the house, either."

He felt guilty as soon as he said it but didn't retract it. The last thing he wanted was to ensconce himself in what he'd come to think of as America's personal delusions, in empty bedrooms and echoing hallways thickly populated with a girl's farfetched daydreams; the idea of the beach with the ocean or the entire Island at his back wasn't much better.

He had not, since leaving the upper floor, regretted the move. He'd not found the basement a hardship despite America's misgivings. It wasn't until he'd woken up full of fear that morning that he missed the little white room, not because of the luxuries it afforded or the convenience of it but because it was small and closed off and safe; because it had a solid door and because the sunlight coming in between the blinds was enough to chase the darkness out but not enough to make him feel exposed. It was a childish longing. He dismissed it, but so too did he dismiss the skin-crawling open air and the misery of America's hopes.

He finished rolling up his sleeves, and he reached to relieve her of half her burden, without asking. "Do you know Camille Ryland?" he asked suddenly.

She let him have the cooler, and if he glanced inside, he'd find it full of freeze pops. Not even the fancy "real fruit" sort, but the 300 for a couple bucks variety. The question had her humming thoughtfully as they left the building and turned down the path toward the jungle.

"Not counting Twitter?  I kissed her once, but that's about it." She glanced at him, earlier mood giving way easily to curiosity, "Why?"

A long, long silence. When he broke it, it was irritable: more than that, it sounded angry, in a tightly-controlled, quietly-dispensed sort of way.

"Is there anyone on the Island that you haven't, though?"

America couldn't help the soft huff of laughter at the question. "Most of them. There was a place in that tower where it was all dark and voices kept talking at me. One was Aunt Prudie n'the other was myself. Jesus wept, Taym. I had to listen to Prudie lecture me for not saving myself and acting the hussy while at the same time I was getting bitched out by myself for not sleeping around nearly enough and ruining all our plans." She paused and shot him a lopsided grin, "I was kind of a mean about it too. Now what's up with Cami?"

America made a sound that was half frustration half laughter, and maybe it felt a little good to have Taym prevaricating at her. After all the recent bullshit, his brand was slightly more charming than usual. "Aaaall the sex, maybe a new face a week.  Or a month if I was too busy. It was different before, I always had to date a boy if I wanted to sleep with him or people'd make life shitty. Or go to the city for the other sort. But here that wasn't gonna matter. Just meaningless hookups from sea to shining sea. Get what I want and on to whatever I wanted next. "

She gestured wide, paused, then abruptly dropped her hands. "No friends,  either. Not real ones, not ones that make you want to come back and stay awhile. Allies yes. Friendly folks yes. Coworkers yes. But people I'd love? ******** foolish as anything right after gaining all the freedom I'd ever wanted. It was supposed to just be about me and for me and boo to the rest of the world you can lookout for your own damn selves."

The girl clucked her tongue as they entered the treeline, "It'd probably be easier, but likely pretty meaningless,  too."
PostPosted: Tue Jun 17, 2014 8:31 pm

"It would be much easier." It was thinly-contained anger, still, unchanged--if anything, amplified. He cursed suddenly, under his breath. "I left my ******** cigarettes in my coat." And then, without any segue at all: "Were you pissed about--about Cee? Not the ******** pageant thing, I don't give a s**t. Never mind."

The tone earned a pair of raised eyebrows in his direction. She answered though, because she always did. Even the questions he didn't want answered. "Beyond feeling like you'd chosen someone you hardly knew over me? I was glad you weren't going back to how it was before. The things you talked about. And Cee's ******** hot too, like,  really good job there." She,  perhaps wisely, didn't mention the body shots.

America could have stopped there but she'd said before she prized honesty over feelings and she'd abide by that as often as she could stand. "But it's ******** complicated and I don't know if pissed is the word but you were different when we were..."  She gestured because what was the word for it?  Not really together but also yes kind of together because it hadn't been meaningless or friendly convenience but also not at all together. She gave up after a moment and just barreled on, "And I love you either way, but I really like that side of you too and it's one thing for you to tell me I can't have that from you anymore because okay, fine. But it's something else to know that someone barely a week in gets to have what I can't with the lift of a ******** finger."

Huffing, America stormed ahead as a tree house came into view through the foliage.

He stopped, let her get a few steps ahead while a dozen comebacks jostled for selection.

"It sucks, doesn't it," he said, barely lifting his voice after her. "To get a little piece of a person and think you've earned it, think maybe it means something, and then just get reminded again that no, it'll get handed out to whoever asks."

"Except me," she added, "and yes it does. " If America was slightly less wrapped up in her own unhappiness at this fact, she'd have wondered who had done him the same. "I'll figure my s**t out,  I always do. Though if you've got some advice I'm all ears."

Reaching the rope ladder she began to climb up, calling down as she went,  "Is that why you're asking about Cami? Feeling out if I'll raise hell at you for banging her?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:05 pm

The anger drained out of him, because it was impossible to direct it at a person who didn't even acknowledge it; who wasn't aware of it; who never stopped to consider themselves the source of it even when it was handed to them explicitly. It was too exhausting.

I'm so ******** tired, he thought dully, again. He twisted the bottom of the rope ladder in his fingers as she ascended, and numb, apathetic, shifted his armful to follow her, heaving himself with an uncharacteristic lack of grace onto the floor of the treehouse and immediately folding up into a corner, arms over his knees, and the only emotion he had room for was the desperate regret that he'd forgotten his cigarettes.

And he, again, ignored the question.

"You would change your mind," he told her suddenly, unfeelingly, without malice. "If he decided he wanted you to."

Confusion flooded America's features, and she began to ask, a laugh no doubt waiting in her throat despite the empty tone of his statement, but then she paused. Sitting across from him, back against a wooden wall, the girl pulled out a cherry ice pop for herself and set the beer next to the cooler.

There were really only two people between them who could be qualified with just a he.

Biting off the top, her eyes closed as the sweet chill hit her tongue, and America took her time thinking about it. Just the insinuation pissed her off, really, and from just about anybody else she'd be storming something fierce right now. But for Taym, at least for this, she'd take a moment to think.

And maybe stare at him with a shitty expression while making the sort of obnoxious sounds that come part and parcel with eating freezer pops.

"He'd have to have a helluva spreadsheet to change my mind on anything, and he would have one, too, because he respects me enough to know that." Her voice was a low, thoughtful drawl as eyes heavy and narrow, she peered at him. "I'm nobody's pet, either, Obadiah Thompson."
