FS #3: Dovaa Girl Username: Cricket2008 Character's Name: Dahreyni Prompt Chosen: CYOA Prompt Response: The marketplace bustled in the brisk morning air. Dahreyni was glad her Master had sent her out on an errand. It was good to get out of the stuffy shop on such a bright day. The Master hadn’t told her to rush the package to its intended recipient so she didn’t think it out-of-place to window shop while she walked. She paused to survey her image in a shop window. Nodding approval at her choice of color in her clothes, she paused looking at her horns. Might need a bit of a shiny dangly there, she thought.
Running footsteps behind her cautioned her to step aside as her friend Dodge slid to a stop beside her. “Rey! Haven’t seen you in ages,” he said a little out of breath. “Where’ve you been? Where you headed?” His questions came in a rush in his excitement at finding her.
“I’m delivering a package for Master Porth”, she replied with a smile. Since being assigned as an apprentice to Master Porth, she’d been kept too busy to hang out with her friends. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed them. And especially Dodge. His shaggy blonde hair and wrinkled clothes were as she remembered him. He was always on the go, never seeming to have time to tidy himself up. But he always had the best ideas for going on adventures.
“I heard you were working for the potion maker,” he said, following her as she started walking again. “Does he let you help him when he brews?”
“Naw, I’m not that kind of apprentice,” she replied. “A life of pot stirring and making charms is not for me.” Dahreyni walked a little taller and announced, “I’m going to be a great warrior someday.” She felt there was only one choice in life.
Dodge snorted. “You can’t even kill a snake that’s been stealing your eggs. What makes you think you could kill a dragon?”
Dahreyni waved a hand at her friend dismissing his comment. “Once I have training, I’ll be able to kill anything.”
Winks of light caught Dahreyni’s attention as she passed another shop window. Stopping short, she gazed longingly at a cream-colored tunic embroidered with varying shades of teal on display. The intricate design, embellished with tiny mirrors, sparkled with the sunlight dodging past people walking by. Dahreyni felt as if it had winked at her, inviting her to take it home.
Dodge, back-stepping when he noticed that his friend had stopped, wrinkled his nose at the elaborate tunic. “You wouldn’t catch a ‘great warrior’ wearing that,” he scoffed.
“Well they don’t wear armor ALL the time,” she said as if speaking to child younger than herself. “Sometimes a woman wants to look pretty.” She smiled at Dodge pretending to primp her hair.
Dodge rolled his eyes. “Yea, like you really care about looking pretty.”
“Oh, you!” said Dahreyni, shoving him aside and walking away. Tossing back over her shoulder, she said, “You wouldn’t know a pretty girl if she sat on you.”
“Doesn’t matter anyway,” Dodge said, catching up to her. “You’d never have enough coins to buy something like that.”
“I still like it,” she replied, not quiet mollified by his dismal of the ‘not caring how she looked’ comment. Thinking more of the shop window tunic, she wondered what she might need to make herself something like it. “I could probably make one,” she mused aloud. Her next thought was, of course, that the materials would probably cost too much too. New apprentices didn’t receive wages. They get a roof over their head, food in their belly and a trade to get them out on their own.
Dodge laughed out loud. “A great warrior that does needlework like an old ma,” he chuckled. “Yup, that would be you. All gussied up in armor, just sitting around stitching up your pretty clothes.” He leaned back as he walked mimicking knitting with his hands.
Normally, Dahreyni had no problem holding up her end of the friendly banter between her and Dodge, but today his comments were beginning to annoy her. She wasn’t sure why though.
“Well, at least I have plans,” she snapped. “What are you going to do? Run around the streets for the rest of your life?”
Dodge stopped and stared at her, surprised at her change in attitude.
“Never mind,” she said. “I gotta go.” Before Dodge could reply, Dahreyni dashed away and disappeared through the milling shoppers.
Note: Dahreyni’s journey is about discovering that everything in life has value and that without the support of non-battlers such as armor makers and healers, even great battlers wouldn’t be great. She’ll be forever striving to become a warrior, but her destiny is to become a potion and charm maker.

FS #2: Orderite Boy Username: Cricket2008 Character's Name: Cody Prompt Chosen: Gearing up for School! Prompt Response: Cody sat on a stone wall listening to his friends. Well, half listening. Tomorrow began theirs, and his, journey to becoming a Dragon Hunter. They were all excited. He was not. He pretended to share their excitement of finally starting training, but he dreaded what the next step in his life was going to bring him. There was nothing wrong with the choice to becoming a Dragon Hunter, it just wasn’t his choice. Not wanting to disappoint his father, he’d agreed to apply to the Citadel Academy for Dragon Hunter training. Cody had hoped that they wouldn’t accept an untested farmer’s boy. Once the application had been submitted, his father practically glowed with pride and couldn’t stop talking about how his son was going to be a Dragon Hunter.
His father’s Dragon Hunting career had been cut short by a crippling injury. While he could still walk, his father’s awkward limp prevented him from ever engaging the dangerous beasts again. When Cody was younger, he reveled in the stories his father told about his battles. As he grew older, Cody developed interests of his own and they didn’t mesh with his father’s way of thinking.
Cody would have been perfectly happy to stay on the farm and to continue to working the land. He’d begun to think that someday the farm would be passed down to him. His parents were a contented couple and he’d hoped to find that for himself someday. But… as Dragon Hunter, he didn’t expect that to happen now. Even if Cody had been able to bring himself to tell his father that he didn’t want to hunt dragons, he could never stay on the farm and see his father’s disappointed dreams in his face every day. Since both of the paths open to him would require his departure from the farm, he figured might as well make his father proud and give it a go at the dragon hunting.
“Cody!”
Broken out of his thoughts, Cody looked up at his friend, Stenn, who was looking back at him with impatience.
Finally getting Cody’s attention, Stenn said, “Come on! We’re going to the Armorer to pick out our dream weapons.” Stenn didn’t wait for a response. Assuming that Cody was as excited as the rest of them, he expected Cody to follow without question. Cody did hesitate, but only for a moment. He wasn’t really interested in a ‘dream’ weapon, but if he didn’t show an interest and go with his friends, they’d be asking him what was up. He already felt surrounded by mistruths, he didn’t want to add out-and-out lying to his friends.
Sliding off the stone wall, Cody jogged to catch up with Stenn. “So what’s your ‘dream’ weapon?” Cody asked his friend.
“Something big and heavy”, said Stenn, mimicking hefting something heavy over his shoulder. “You?”
“Something sharp and swift,” replied Cody. If he had to choose a weapon, Cody wanted something that would allow him to move quickly in a fight. He expected that he’d be defending himself, just to stay alive, more often than he’d be on the offensive.
Ahead of them, Cody saw the rest of the group file through the Armorer’s shop door. Excited chatter was already filling the room as he and Stenn followed them in.
