Importance of Being Ernest

Prompt:
Just after a grueling class - or perhaps on your way back into school with a desire to contact one of your teachers for some questions outside of class, a fellow student (perhaps one you know or have never had contact with) catches your eye. They look notably distressed.

If you ignore them and intend to go about your business, see “Avoid Contact” — if the sight sparks concern or interest, or even if your character just wants to make fun of them, see “Approach”:

A light breeze tugged at the ends of his auburn hair. Odors of the city assailed his nostrils. It was on days like this that Cody wished he hadn't chosen to leave the farm and enter battle training. How he missed the earthy smell of plowed earth. He even missed the smell of the animals. Choosing to be a fighter instead of a farmer, to make his father proud, sometimes proved to be a tough row to hoe. Cody was a capable enough fighter, but his heart wasn't in it. Now that he was away from home, Cody often wondered if it wouldn't have been easier to face his father’s disappointment in him every day, rather than being separated from the farm life that he loved.

While adjusting his cap to make sure the wind didn't steal it, Cody noticed a fellow student looking a bit distressed. He’d seen the boy before in passing, but they’d never had a reason to meet. Curiosity and compassion led Cody’s steps in the direction of the younger boy.

“Hey there, are you OK?” asked Cody.

“Oh! You’ll never believe my misfortune — well, perhaps you will, it’s quite believable, actually—ah, rather more to the point, you looking like a reasonable sort and all, would you mind if I asked a quick favor of you? Don’t look at me like that, there’s something in it for you! And it’s nothing that’ll get you in trouble…much.” He clears his throat, frowning. “Anyway, I was sent out to retrieve this journal of arcane studies from library for my trainer in the east wing, Miss Polly, but I was late to classes this morning for, er…personal reasons…and on my run to school I seem to have dropped the blasted thing. I’m fairly certain I lost it on my run past the fountain near the school. I have another session with a different trainer in only a few minutes, so I don’t have time to run back, but if you’d be willing to do so for me I can certainly make it worth your while. I’ll be back here again in just over an hour - I don’t expect it’ll take you much longer than that to find it. I’ll wait for you, alright?

The boy sounded a bit like he like he was shirking his responsibilities, but Cody didn’t have to be anywhere soon. He figured he might as well help the guy out. After giving directions to Cody on where to find the fountain, the boy darted off. Cody started off in the direction the youngster had indicated. This little side-trip was in an area of the school grounds that Cody wasn’t familiar with yet. He hoped he didn’t get lost. And he hoped he’d be able to find his way back.

As it turned out, the round fountain with a bird statue at the top was easy to find. Walking around the fountain, Cody hoped the book would be lying on the ground and easy to spot. No luck there. Looking around, there didn’t seem to be anyone lingering in the area that he could ask if they’d seen it. Possibly someone might have already found it and picked it up. Better to do a thorough search though, Cody thought, so he looked through the bushes surrounding the walkway around the fountain. Still no luck. Perhaps the lad had been mistaken on where he’d dropped the book, thought Cody. He stood with his hands on his hips and surveyed the area around the fountain hoping something would catch his eye. Finally looking at the fountain itself, he noticed a dark shape in the water. “Oh no…” he groaned.

Walking over to the other side of the fountain, Cody reached into the water to pull out the journal. The stamped cover still read Arcane Studies, but when he opened the book, most of the ink had blurred making the pages unreadable. “Now, I wish I’d hadn’t found it.” Looking for something to put the soggy book in, Cody decided against using his own satchel and possibly ruining any of his own books. “Nothing for it now,” he said. “I guess it’s better that the kid knows what happened to the book.” Carrying the book in his hand, he found his way back to where he’d originally met the distressed lad.

Upon showing him the journal, he is incredibly distressed and wants nothing to do with returning the ruined thing to the teacher. After giving you a small figurine and promising that it has always helped him perform better for tests, he offers you a better reward if you agree to take the journal to his trainer for him and swear not to tattle on him. Cody looked at the small wooden figure in his hand. It appeared to be a figure from history, one that he felt he should recognize, but the carving was so sloppily done, he couldn’t be sure.

“Are you sure?” he asked looking at the boy. “I found the journal, but it might have been better for it to stay lost.” The boy nodded, again saying that it always helped him to remember. Cody didn’t think he needed help with tests, but it would seem ungrateful to refuse the gift. He nodded and put the figure in his satchel.

Cody thought his assistance was over, but when he tried to give the lad the ruined book, he would have none of it. In fact the boy begged Cody to return the book for him. In return the boy offered a bigger reward. Cody’s first inclination was to just leave the book and decline the offer, but the stricken look on the young lad’s face softened his resolve. Reluctantly agreeing to return the book to the teacher, Cody regretted his decision in the next instant. The boy then pleaded for him to not tell the teacher who dropped the book in the water.

“I’ll take the journal back for you,” said Cody. “I’ll do what I can about the other.”

Proceed to the aforementioned location in search of the trainer in question. Upon locating her, the trainer immediately spots the journal and questions you about the circumstances that lead to its current state, tone calm but rigidly strict sounding. If you keep the student’s secret and lie to the teacher, head to “Lie”. If you tattle, head to “Tattle”.

The boy’s directions again proved true. Cody easily found the teacher’s office, though he was hoping she wouldn’t be there. If she wasn’t there to ask about the book, then he wouldn’t have to figure out how not to tell her how it got ruined.

No luck for him today. She was there and she quickly spotted the book in his hand. Cody was really beginning to regret stopping to help that kid. Next time, Cody, he thought to himself, you just keep on walking. She didn’t seem upset, but he could tell she wasn’t happy about the condition of the book. And of course, she wanted to know how it got that way.

Cody tried to explain in a generic way about finding the book, but she asked more direct questions. Cody sighed. If it ever got back to his father that he’d lied to a teacher, all his efforts to follow in his dad’s footsteps would have been wasted. Cody finally relented and shared his morning’s activities, starting with finding the distraught boy.

Tattle:

The professor snorts, not surprised by said student’s clumsiness and unwillingness to face their own problems head on, and asks you if you would be interested in performing one more favor in order to educate the student in what happens when they attempt to lie to a teacher.

“You’re not going to hurt him, are you?” asked Cody. “Or turn into a ... toad... or something?” She chuckled a little at the suggestion and assured Cody that the boy would come to no harm. Cody didn't see how he could refuse the Professor's request when he'd already spent his morning helping someone who, it now appeared didn't deserve his help. He agreed to do the favor for the teacher. He had a nagging feeling that he was digging himself into a pit that he wasn't going to get out off,

Pleased, the trainer fetches a small pouch from within their desk drawer and gives it to you — weighty for its size — with instructs you not to open it, but to deliver it directly to the student. Before you walk out the door, she also gives you [Item grant: Soft Leather Gloves] saying that this is for you as a reward for your honesty and effort and that she hopes you find it useful at some point on your journey. After leaving her office and making it out of sight, if you peek at the item in the pouch, intended for the student only, head to “Peek” — if you obey your instructions and promptly return to the student without looking, head to “Obey”.

The teacher handed Cody a small pouch, with instructions to deliver to the boy, and no peeking. Cody was glad to be heading out of her office and escaping the whole situation without punishment for being a party in delivering the ruined book. But no…, he almost made it out the door before she called him back. Instead of a punishment, she handed him a reward for his honesty. She could have knocked him over with a feather.

“For your honesty and effort,” she said, handing him a pair of gloves. “I hope you find them useful on your journey.” She smiled at him and dismissed him. Cody finally made his escape. Once outside, he marveled at the soft leather of his new gloves. Stowing his gift safely into his satchel, he turned his attention to the heavy pouch.

Curiosity gnawed at him, but with the gift, given for his honesty, still warm in his satchel, he dared not open the pouch. Besides, he thought, whatever was inside was meant to teach a lesson. He didn't want to be the one that needed the lesson.

Obey:

Not wanting to mess with fate or disobey a teacher, you leave the pouch intended for the student laced up tight and return to him. Upon opening the pouch and upending it, a small, unremarkable white stone drops into the boy’s palm. As soon as he opens his mouth, however, the student soon finds he cannot say anything but, “I will account for my own mistakes. I will not encourage lies.” Intensely frustrated by this, he tosses the stone away, and looks angry with you, but can’t manage to tell you anything but his own set phrases.

Cody found the boy waiting where he'd first met him earlier. Different emotions passed over the boy's face as Cody explained his encounter with the Professor. Luckily, Cody was able to finish his story without the boy storming off.

“She didn’t seem angry," Cody finished, "but she gave me this to give to you,” He handed the small pouch to the younger lad.

Curiosity winning out over caution, the boy unlaced the pouch and peeked inside. “It’s just a rock,” said the boy. “What does that mean?”
He up-ended the pouch to let the stone fall into his palm. Opening his mouth to speak again, he found that he couldn’t say anything but, “I will account for my own mistakes. I will not encourage lies.” Angry, the boy tried to yell at Cody, but the same words came out. In frustration, he threw the stone and the pouch at Cody and stormed off. Quickly sidestepping to avoid being beaned, the boy was gone before Cody could reply.

At this rate, Cody wasn't going to have any friends at this school. Try to help someone and it all goes hairy. Heaving a big sigh, Cody looked in the direction of where the stone landed. Walking over, he squatted down by the stone for a closer look. He reached out, then remembered what happened to the boy and drew his hand back before his fingers made contact with the stone. Remembering the gift the teacher gave him, Cody slipped on his new gloves, then picked up the stone. It looked simple enough, but it obviously had a lesson to teach. Finding the pouch nearby, he slipped the stone back into it. Cody didn’t think it was wise to leave an enchanted item lying around, so he dropped the pouch into his satchel. His new gloves, he tucked proudly into his belt and went on his way.
