This is more of a rant-comparion of the 2 bugs needed for wings... lol

Great Monarch
Ok... so I was looking at the prices of the Monarchs when I was working on my Archangel's back in mid-2013... ~ 500k per

Then I was comparing it to when I was helping my friend (Animal) with her WM Quest (late 2013)... ~ 3m-5m per

Then more recently with my other friend's (Loyal) Risen Quest (feb 2014) .... ~55m per

And now.... they're freaking 1.2b+ ?! burning_eyes

Demonfly
M'kay.... so I remember when demonflies were like.... 20k back in mid-2013. xd

Then in late 2013 (dec 2013), when I was helping my friend (Levi) with her Lucifer's Wings... well, they were 700k.

When I bought them for my own Fallen quest.... they were 8m-10m. classified_fu

Now they're at 300m+. burning_eyes

To sum up my current thoughts on the whole ordeal of inflation:

Σ(゚д゚lll)WHAT?!

lol that gif sums it up pretty well.

I got into Alchemy pretty recently by comparison to all the veterans here. I got the Monarchs for my Risen quest for about 3.8 mil each after some aggressive haggling and auction sniping. This was only back in late 2013. I'm just...really glad that I had the foresight to start stocking up on Demonflies and Great Monarchs for the next 5 pairs of wings. ><

Recently, I decided I want a replacement Selaphiel since I sold my old pair. I had to start gathering up everything again, and damn. I think I still got off lucky having to pay only 300-500 mil per Monarch. Keep in mind that this was just earlier this month. Within a few weeks, the Monarchs doubled in price from what it was before. ><;;;

I think I was lucky to get my monarch earlier this month for 200m each for 6 of them but the only reason I got that price is I bought them from a friend.

._.

....

Damn... I'm never going to get my wings. I couldn't afford them at 500 mil, now they're running at over a bil EACH!?

Why can't you people just waffle? you're not the only one watching the market. I see many people waiting for rare bug but I experienced and proven that they're not that impossible like rare fishes to find. You can even make cases and inks while you're at it.

..."waffle?"

I actually have better luck getting a rare fish just because you can trade it up from pebbos. Yes, it takes some skill to catch a fish in Durem, but you will get better with practice. On the other hand, you're completely dependent on luck if you get a Monarch or not. Is it impossible? No. It's not impossible to win the lottery either. You just have to be lucky.

Waffle, its a term I got infected and used from Vinagal I think. Other name for hard work, grinding and etc.

While I do believe luck is a factor, there are tactics that reduces bad luck. Preparation.

Also with regards to durem, I have been researching some stuff about rare fishes and large fishes like most of my activities here on gaia for the sake of alchemy / business stuff in between.

The use of filtering made me avoid having crabs on my bucket down to 0% presence. The use of Plus type rods and especially distance made me quantify that one can have 4-5 medium fishes and 3-4 chances of a large fish appearance on their bucket.

Yeah you can get lucky and get a rare fish on first try or go into barton and stumble on a rare bug but you could also do stuff that can increase your chances of experiencing the same.

For instance, the rare bug gathering guide, I used to hypothesized that rare bugs only appear on areas where there are no houses. I was proven wrong by doing some survey on people who did find rare bugs on areas where houses, now I just widened my search area for every location on barton and in effect caused me to gather more bugs than usual (though not rare, plenty enough for ink exchange. And currently I don't have time for barton since even a 3-5 hours online straight on gaia isn't enough to do all the stuff I want to research on.)

My point in all of this is, luck is one thing, but it's not impossible to take some time doing stuff that would get you what you want than solely relying on mp and wait for someone to list something low.

I just call that farming and grinding from all the WoW that I've played.

And that is exactly my point. Rare fish are easier because there are things that you can do to improve your odds. Rare bugs are just pure luck. So far, I haven't heard of any method for improving your odds of finding rare bugs. Only real fact I know is that certain color bugs, flowers, and trash spawn more often during certain times of the day. But there doesn't seem to be a pattern in determining which one spawns in your particular spot. There also seems to be more bugs, trash, and flowers in areas that haven't been visited in a long time. Other than that, luck is the only thing you have when trying to find rare bugs.

This is why I liken it to playing the lottery and also why people wait on the MP for a decent price to get a Monarch. It's not impossible to win the lottery or find a Great Monarch in Towns. You'll probably find one eventually if you invest enough time at it. At the same time, you're not going to bank your entire Alchemy quest on being that lucky. 10 times. I will be that almost all of us on backwings quests are searching the Towns high and low for those rare bugs, but that doesn't mean we can't get hopeful and look in the MP too.

EDIT: One more thing that I've noticed about bugs spawning. There are certain maps that don't seem to ever spawn bugs. I'm not 100% positive on this, but I have certain maps favorited because they always have multiple bugs in them. Once I cleared them up, I move one map over and back again, and at least 1 bug will immediately spawn again in that map. I haven't tried that with other spots, but it's just something I've noticed since I always start in the same place and move in the same pattern.

On your edit part, I'll have that one on mental note subject for research. I haven't been on barton long enough to spend hours just staying their and waffling.

On your main reply, just another hypothesis of mine but I believe one can complete a white body dye and have lost of rare bugs. If their primary focus is for a body dye, then chances are they'd stumble to find a rare bug.

The feeling of things take too long depends on what exactly is what someone intends to happen. I noticed that when I was hunting for papers on barton as a primary objective, I caught some bugs for ink to a number where I didn't expect. I didn't accomplish my primary object of crafting a case from papers but the other objective was bountiful. I was frustrated with the papers. So I reflected on it. Maybe a task really does take long because its the only thing on your mind.

Getting a body dye takes too long but if my mind set is making it and not finding rare bugs then I supposed I can find one along the way and minimize my frustration on looking for a rare bug since all of it is focused on a body dye. ._. did that make sense?

I rarely spend hours on Towns 'cause it's so incredibly dull. The best I do is a few minutes each day to do a quick sweep for bugs.

I get what you're saying about feeling that it takes long if you focus on that objective. It's all about perspective, and it's exactly as you said. Collecting bugs for a White Body Dye seem like a long boring chore if it's all you think about. Focusing on smaller goals might make it seem better because you end up feeling more productive at the end of the day. Although, I don't know how much "better" things would seem if you shift your focus away finding the rare bugs. Especially in my case where collecting bugs in Towns will always seem dull.

I regret not picking up the rare bugs back when I got the furniture (for 10k a piece I might add). I just wasn't planning on making big wings back then...
Big mistake I think.
