The day would go as follows for those assigned to the next Sahara group:
0700 : medical check-up with the infirmary
0900 : outfitting and final supplies check
1200 : final briefing on any new information brought in by the previous group (nothing of note, this time, beyond a quiet that is beginning to feel suspicious)
1400 : groups begin departing to their appointed regions

Jane and Stephen stood by the portal, waiting for Taym and Lawrence, the final pair, to make any final requests and ask any last minute questions before they leave.

It had actually been something of a shock to realize that Lawrence was still on the mission, and a glance over his current state cemented Taym's belief that Deus was actively trying to kill him, because why else would they be shipping him out to the Sahara with a sociopath, but especially why else would they be shipping him out to the Sahara with a sociopath cripple?

So the rage had been building, slowly, because rage was an easier outlet than the fear that he was finally, finally starting to feel. His last text had been to Kostya, a nonchalant goodbye, and his hands had been shaking but he'd pretended they weren't, fumbling his way with one hand while he used the other to smoke in a failing effort to dull the nerves.

He delivered himself to the portal, appropriately dressed and laden, sick with dread and with a face of totally impassive professionalism, the trembling of his hands stilled through a force of will. He jerked a nod at the pair of them--suspicious at Stephen, consummately businesslike at Jane. At the latter he realized he'd never asked her a question he'd meant to--what she meant by an unstable weapon in unskilled hands--before realizing at the same moment that if he had, he'd likely not have gotten any useful answers anyway. The collar of his shirt smelled like someone else's shampoo, down underneath the smoke, and the comfort this had been a half hour before was a mockery now.

Lawrence had arrived to the mission dressed as himself, because there was no logical reason to bring Jan with him when his belongings had to be both efficient and light. He looked worn, recovered from his ordeal in the arctic fully but sporting the mended and self inflicted injury he'd sustained in Cael's office. He'd been looking into prosthetic alternatives for the aesthetic side of things, but there simply had not been time. He had said nothing at all as they were briefed, as they were checked over. He did not complain, he was not afraid.

Butch said maybe he should be, it sounded like a long walk with no water dish or tin of delicious.

But what Butch said did not effect anything.

When he arrived at the portal, there were no pertinent questions which presented themselves. He could ask about surveillance levels on the island, he could ask about the moths, he could ask about any number of things. But ultimately it did not matter, what would happen would happen, he would persist or he would cease, and that was all.

Instead, he simply gave Taym the smile of a man who did not understand what threads of humanity a smile was supposed to be marionette to.

Whereas Lawr was feeling nothing and faking humanity, Taym was prey to his crippling anxieties and putting on a mask of unruffled stoicism. He gave Lawr a flat look marked only by a sudden tightness in his jaw, and shifted the bag on his shoulder

(where the strap pressed, uncomfortably, into the protruding bone of his clavicle, and he thought of the time he'd rescued a sighthound and been told that its ribs and hipbones meant that it could never sleep on the bare floor, that it could never wear a harness lest it suffer open wounds, in the way that one does think of mundane and irrelevant things in times of stress)

and settled his eyes back on Jane. He had two modes of eye contact: total avoidance, mainly reserved for people he liked, and defiant-dog stare, mainly for people he didn't. He deployed the latter even though he clearly meant to address Lawrence: "Ready when you are." He didn't ask him about his hand, about the way he looked. He didn't care. It would be better, he thought, if he had died, and the thought made him feel sick, and Fiona reassured him that he was correct.

Stephen gave them both a reassuring nod, "Your supplies drops will be on Wednesdays. While that portal is open, you'll also have a few minutes access to the Deus intranet. Not enough time to do much, but any outgoing messages you've had queued up and any messages that have been waiting for you will get sent through at that time. The outpost you'll be at is s31, and its water tanks are at a good level, but don't forget to use the water reclamation for all your waste. Never know when disaster will hitchya." He offered them a smile. "You two'll be fine, but stay cautious, use the emergency number if you think you've caught a bug." The smile widened, and the doctor's eyes twinkled in a way that tended to remind people that this man was in Life.

Jane looked them over, and also gave them a pleasant smile. "You both have strikes against you on your records. It would be well if you used this time to prove yourself of use. Weekly reports will be expected."

The portal opened to the Sahara, the sky was a deep, starry blue with the tiniest crack of light at the horizon. Dawn. The heat would be upon them soon, but for now the air was cool. The small base was more a set of three domed tents. One held two beds, several baskets of food, and three large water tanks. One was full of maps, journals, and odd bits collected by other hunters during their stay here. The last was the smallest, the water reclamation facility, though many simply called it an outhouse.

Maggots. He honestly couldn't say he was surprised, most things in this desert were subject to the whims of the Famine creatures which lived there and the other, non-Fear animals which also made the hostile terrain their home. He could not complain and was not inclined to, instead carefully separating out the good remaining rations from the ones which had to be conceded to the maggots. There was not a great deal left, but it was what it was. He would have to persevere regardless.

All it meant was a little less energy and a little more hunger pains. He was not complaining, the latter made him feel more alive.

He'd been leveling off, approaching a numb shadow of normal, until the flood of messages.

His focus was gone; his will was gone, his effort was gone. He had orders and orders were all he had.

With the tip of Fiona's blade he scored, again and again, into the floor of the room where he slept. He was not exercising an undue amount of caution. He was exercising no caution at all. The waiting had stretched him thin. The messages, from America and from Jane and oddly, from Shu, had snapped him.

In the distance a massive pillar of light shoots from the desert, into the sky, and then fades in a matter of moments.
