Luo Ushio

----------------------------------------------------------------
Character Info
----------------------------------------------------------------

Character Name: Luo Ushio
Nicknames: N/A
Age: 17
Birth Date: 04/26
Gender: Male
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 6'0
Body Type: Athletic
Distinguishing Features: Clan insignia chakra burned into the base of the back of his neck.
Personality: Calm natured, and often patient, Luo's personality stems from his genetics, as most of his clan appears to have the same temperament. At times however, his calm nature is to a fault, often causing him to seem devoid of emotional expression or a lack of caring. Just as well, when intrigued Luo is easily fascinated and just as well curious with things he has not encountered. On the field, his excitement for a peer of equal skill sometimes cannot be contained.

Above all Luo is a perfectionist, consistently determined not only to learn, but to master anything within his realm of comprehension and skill. It should not come as a surprise to anyone that Luo would rather train for hours on end instead of communing with his peers. When a proper routine is not maintained, the young man like many of his clan is prone to irritability.

Background
Luo comes from quite an affluent shinobi clan who despite their notoriety in their area, remain quite adept at keeping themselves removed from prying eyes. His upbringings were by no means meager, however in training as a shinobi Luo was taught since he could run how to deal with adversity in his surroundings, and more importantly how to dispatch of the enemy. His skill grew with age, deciding upon his primary held and thrown weapons at age seven, mastering the practical applications of both of those as well as his clan's specialty of suiton enough to be sent into the field at age eleven.

His skill as a shinobi progressed on par with the top shinobi in his clan who had come before him, his grandfather and clan head taking a special interest in Luo's fervent curiosity. Training under the man for two years, Luo's true skill began to show as well as his excelling knack for field strategics. It wasn't long until Luo was tasked at age fourteen with heading his own small squad, helping his grandfather plan attacks as well as counter-attacks for missions they had received as head strategic advisor to the clan head. It didn't take long however, for Luo to realize the perils and issues with shinobi life as a whole.

After quite some time getting to personally know and affiliate with allied shinobi clans and rogues alike, at fifteen Luo had gathered that a shinobi village was something that would solve most of the ills of leading the life of a shinobi, the most apparent being immediate threat from other contracted shinobi. There was no true unity in the profession, and Luo proposed to his grandfather an idea he had put together over the course of a year, coming forth with it at sixteen. On premise alone, Luo was denied near instantly, even Luo knowing full well the proposal was a lofty goal. However, Luo had foreseen this outcome and used his contacts with allied clans and rogue factions to spread the idea around. While most were reluctant, there were some who believed the cause to be of great interest.

It was not until word got back to the clan leader himself of Luo's pre-proposed plan that he became interested. He had been impressed with the amount of momentum Luo's goal had garnered in the one year since he had first put it on the table, seeing there was clear intent behind the boy's ambition, as well as the makings of a leader. Allowing his fondness for Luo as well as his curiosity get the best of him, Luo's senior came to him with a revised version of the plan, cutting the initially proposed budget in order to let it be known the Ushio clan was not in the business of taking risks of such magnitude, even for its own. Respecting the decision and appreciating the support of the clan financially as well as supply wise, Luo pooled the majority of his inheritance together to make up for the amount that was cut.

Leaving with a small team of Ushio who were to aide Luo initially as well as report back to the clan on his progress, he left to meet with the other two shinobi he believed had the skills and ambition to help him lead this endeavor. As one of the three council members of the newly founded village Luo, now seventeen, risked not only his inheritance, but his reputation on this endeavor. His only hope, was that he and his council were capable of bringing their goals to fruition.

Family Information
Name: Lao Ushio
Gender: Male
Relation: Father
Description: A seasoned shinobi, Lao Ushio's has for some time now held the title of Chief of Operations for the Ushio clan, overseeing every and all facets of shinobi activity, assigning squad leaders as well as missions to each carefully crafted squadron. As any Ushio, he was a born and bred shinobi, taking quickly to the art of the katana. A very determined man since his youth, Lao is known to be strict and demanding man both on and off the battlefield. It was no surprise to the clan, that once he had a son, the boy was trained as the man himself trained. He like his son was a perfectionist, especially when it came to the sword, as well as ninjutsu. As his son has grown, they both have seemed to maintain a close relationship despite their duties. Though not in his nature to say it, Lao is proud of Luo's current endeavor and wishes him the best, knowing full well his son was capable of getting anything he set his mind to done.

Name: Mei Ushio
Gender: Female
Relation: Mother
Description: Born to a small but wealthy shinobi clan, then Mei Miyamoto was trained as any other as a kunoichi, growing in her years to be quite adept at the clan's throwing weapon of choice, the senbon. After some years of joining missions with the larger and adjacent Ushio clan, Mei and Lao soon began a relationship that would last for quite some time. After some time, the clans became officially affiliated with the union of the two shinobi, Mei taking residence with the Ushio clan as customary. For a few years, she continued work as a kunoichi, until the pressure of childbearing from the clan became apparent. While her clan was known for producing plenty of men, the Ushio clan seemed to only produced one to two males in each household. After some time, Mei and Lao agreed mutually to have a child and Mei retired officially from duty. As her son grew, she began to care deeply for his well-being. Despite coming from two well versed shinobi, Mei knew that life was fleeting in that profession. Deciding the best was to give him all the tools he needed, Mei instructed Luo in the art of the senbon, if only to keep harm as far from him as possible. As he grew and his skill improved, Mei's worry subsided, deciding he was a young man capable of handling his own. Although his leaving and new endeavor was something Mei worried about, she did not worry about his well-being. She only hoped her son was successful.

Name: Hideki Ushio
Gender: Male
Relation: Grandfather
Description: From the moment he was named, Hideki was destined to become a great man within the Ushio clan. A competent man, and an equally more competent shinobi, Hideki became the youngest Ushio to be placed on the battlefield, performing under pressure as well as the others at the young age of eight. Progressing quickly, it became clear that he was a clear successor to the former clan head, taking over the clan at age eighteen, the youngest head for just over a century. Having taught many Ushio in his time, none had quite received as much attention as his grandson. A man a great determination and curiosity, Hideki was often praised for discovering new shinobi arts or methods of running the clan's affairs. He was a man of insight and innovation, constantly striving for more. It is under him that the clan's continuing success truly flourished, forming the most alliances the clan had ever had in their history. In getting to know his grandson during morning meditations as well as private lessons, he saw much of his same ambition and curiosity in the young boy. Taking care not to influence too much the boy's growth, he found that as he grew he remained similar. In the interest of his clan, as well as his fondness for the lad, Hideki decided to partly fund his endeavor. Although outwardly somewhat pessimistic on the whole of the matter, Hideki wished his grandson great success. This endeavor was to test the boy who he saw as a prospective successor.

    Kazoku Segare

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Character Info
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Character Name: Kazoku Segare
    Nicknames:
    Age: 21
    Birth Date: [8/31]
    Gender: Male
    Hair Color: Black
    Eye Color: Silver
    Height: 5'8”
    Body Type: Athletic
Distinguishing Features: Segare always wears a thick bracelet on his left wrist, made of solid gold and with a large ruby embedded in it. Not simply a fashion accessory, the bracelet marks him as the eldest son and heir of his family. The bracelet was made specifically for him, and fused in place such that it cannot be removed by normal means.
Personality: Extravagant. Segare was born to a rich family, knows it, and acts it. He could be considered a typical rich brat at times if he weren't generally friendly and occasionally respectful to everybody. Raised in riches and politics, he finds anything overly serious to be boring and considers it his sworn duty to keep life interesting for himself and all those around him. Whether or not they appreciate it isn't really his concern.

    Background
Born the eldest son son of the Kazoku family, a rich family who had for several generations held the position as financial adviser to the local Daimyo, Segare was raised in the lap of luxury. Anything he wanted, it was soon delivered to him, in the most expensive and luxurious form available. As he grew older, he was tutored in many subjects. Politics, finance, economics, everything his father felt necessary for him to one day succeed him in his position he hired the best tutors he could find for. At the age of seven, he was made to begin attending the Daimyo's councils, to watch his father at work and better learn the trade. Life went on this way for several years, but Segare quickly found himself bored of it. Bored of the politics, the posturing, and utterly fed up with having to stand silently at his father's side, smiling and nodding to all of the Daimyo's many advisers. In his free time when he got away from his duties and lessons, Segare instead took to watching the Daimyo's guards in their training yard, fighting with sword and shield, as well as the occasional more unique weapons such as staves and axes. It seemed a substantially more exciting and worthwhile life to the lad, so at the age of fifteen, he asked his father to hire him a tutor in swordsmanship.

The man agreed, deeming the ability to defend himself a worthy endeavor, and hired him a fencing instructor, and commissioned him a fanciful sword of silver and gold. A conversation piece more than a weapon. With some quick maneuvering Segare managed to get to the smith before the sword was begun, and requested that the sword instead be made of chakra conductive steel, having heard tales of how powerful such swords often were, having strange and unique abilities. He took to his fighting classes with gusto, enjoying every minute, though his teacher often lamented his tendency to abandon the style he was attempting to teach entirely to instead perform dirty tricks he'd seen the guards use in sparring. After a few years, though he had failed to learn the style to the trainer's satisfaction, he was declared competent, and the teacher turned in his resignation, stating that he could do no more good if Segare did not wish to properly learn the style. So, at the age of seventeen, and with a fine sword and the skill to use it, Segare went to the captain of the Daimyo's guard to apply to join his forces, only to find himself denied. On pushing for a reason, it was revealed that his father had, knowing of Segare's plans, paid the man to deny him in an attempt to keep him safe.

Angry, Segare fought his father's will, ceasing to attend any of his lessons or the council meetings any longer, instead repeatedly demanding that his father allow him to join the guard, and trying to convince the captain to change his decision. Several months passed in this way, with no change from any party, and frustration growing on all sides. Eventually, the tension reached it's peak, and Segare left his home, taking all of his possessions and joining himself to a group of ninja operating nearby.

Segare excelled in his new training as a ninja, quickly rising in the ranks as he discovered his sword's unique attributes, leant by it's chakra conductive blade, and assisted by his many lessons. He soon found himself in a position of leadership in the group, ironically, tending to the group's finances. After a few years of this, he grew to miss having a consistent home, as the group spent a lot of time travelling. Deciding to make an attempt at forming a village for ninja who did not wish to spend all of their lives wandering or in hiding from the emperor's forces, he split from the group, taking along as many like minded individuals as were willing, to begin the hunt for a new home. Along the way, they met several other ninja groups and organizations, some of whom joined their number, and word spread of the idea. Eventually, enough people came together, some bringing along wealth and respectability, others unique skills and talents, and they found a suitable place to settle. Along with a couple others who had the most impact on the effort, a council was formed, with Segare a member of it, again tasked with the care of the village's treasury, proving his father's training to have been valuable, though it's recipients were not those originally intended. All that was left, was to see if they could pull it off, and make a village out of a bunch of ninja.

    Family Information
    Name: Kazoku Komon
    Age: 58
    Gender: Male
    Relation: Father
Description: Kazoku Komon, Segare's father, is even more extravagent than his son. Always dressed in the finest clothes available, he wears gold and precious gems in nearly every way imaginable, from woven into his clothes, to his multiple rings, to the chains around his neck. As the Daimyo's treasurer and advisor, a position passed down in the family from father to son, he has accumulated more than his fair share of wealth, and is not afraid to dabble in it. His relationship with Segare is strained, if it can be considered to exist, after the events which led Segare to leave home and become a ninja. They have not had contact since that time.

    Name: Kazoku Sueo
    Age: 8
    Gender: Male
    Relation: Brother
Description: Segare's younger brother and only sibling, Sueo was born when Segare was in his teen years. As his father was always busy with his work, and his mother died only a couple years later, Segare did much of the raising of his brother. Sueo is a quiet child, both from missing his brother since he left, and the need to remain quiet in the Daimyo's presence as he was made to take Segare's place at his father's side during council meetings. Unlike his father and brother, Sueo is not garbed richly. The gold Segare wears is only intended for the eldest son, and Sueo has little taste for fine garments, prefering more simplistic garb. When he can, he enjoys playing outside, and sneaking into the city proper, or even out of the city entirely rather than remaining in the family compound. He has sparse communication with his brother via letters, and often seeks ways to locate him, knowing only that he has become a ninja.

    Profession Info
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Shinobi Profession: Ninjutsu Specialist
    Profession Base Benefits
Increased Chakra Pool: Due to Ninjutsu Specialist's heavy dependence on the ability to use jutsu, they train themselves to increase their chakra reserves beyond that of the average nin.
(Increases base chakra modifier by +2/10.)

Ninjutsu Training: Ninjutsu specialists have a higher understanding of how jutsu work allowing them to learn higher level Ninjutsu than other shinobi.
(Can learn one additional ninjutsu up to three ranks above the user.)

    Rank Benefits

    Genin
Signature Jutsu: Many Shinobi are known for picking one jutsu and focusing on its use above all others. Because of this focus they learn to use their signature jutsu more effectively. The Ninjutsu Specialist chooses one jutsu that they know when they pick this benefit, performing extra training in it. That jutsu becomes their signature jutsu and receives certain benefits.
(As the user gains rank, they are able to either choose another signature jutsu, or upgrade a previous one. This equates to three upgrades in total, one at genin, chuunin, and jounin rank.

There are two benefits that can be gained by choosing a signature jutsu, which can be chosen individually by the user.
    ● For one, the user trains with their chosen jutsu for five posts, learning how to use it more efficiently, wasting less chakra. The end result being that that jutsu costs the same as a jutsu of one less rank in power from that point on.
    ● For the second, the user spends five posts training with their jutsu, to increase it's power by applying extra chakra to it. The end result of this is a jutsu of one full rank higher power, but also a rank higher in cost.

A single jutsu can be upgraded with this benefit only twice, and can not receive the same upgrade twice. A rank jutsu cannot receive the power boost, and S ranks cannot be taken as signature jutsu. The user may change to a new signature jutsu at any time, but in doing so they must perform the training again, and will lose the bonus on their previously chosen jutsu.)

Genin Jutsu: Muki Suna Kaishin [Inorganic Sand Conversion]
    Bonus: -1 Rank Cost
Chuunin Jutsu: Suna Taihou [Sand Cannon Technique]
    Bonus: +1 Rank Power
    Jounin Jutsu:
    Bonus:

    Chuunin
Extra Element: Rarely, a shinobi can learn to tap into an extra element beyond their normal ability. By studying a foreign element, the shinobi can learn to manipulate and use it as if they had a natural affinity for it.
(The Ninjutsu specialist gains access to another element, but they can only learn Ninjutsu for this element, and can only learn up to B rank jutsu.)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Talent Description: Sunaton Mastery
Segare is able to learn all sand jutsu. Rank limitation from Extra Element does not apply.

Talent Sacrifice: Must have the Extra Element: Sunaton chuunin rank benefit. Cannot gain a final element at jounin rank.

How it happened: Eager to learn everything there was about being a ninja, Segare advanced quickly, unlocking both of his natural elements early in his career. Not satisfied, he continued pushing, trying to unlock a third, but without properly knowing how, he instead discovered the method of combining his first two elements together to control a third, sand. Believing this to be his third element, he ceased his attempts and focused on gaining mastery over his sand abilities, unknowingly locking away his ability to gain a third natural element, and allowing the sand to take it's place.

As a result of this, Segare, who was capable of attaining four elements, is only capable of using three. However, the talent he could have gained with his fourth element is merged with his third, allowing him to reach the same level of mastery with that element as he could with his first two.

  • Since we're timeskipping a rather significant portion of time, this thread has become necessary to finally hold the clash between Luo and Segare. Not a battle to the death, but a spar to test each other's limits.

The time for this battle is a day or two after the arrival of the students, at roughly noon.

The location is in a small clearing in the forest. This time though, the clearing chosen is several miles from the village, preventing any unwanted interruptions or observers.

As this battle is meant to be an event that happened in the main RP world, any permanent damage or losses DO carry over to the main RP. Killing is thus highly discouraged, as is the removal of limbs or important organs.

Segare came to a stop in a small clearing, crouching down at one end and panting slightly. He'd been running full tilt for the last ten minutes or so, which was generally bad enough for anyone, but to make it even better if you took into consideration what "Full tilt" meant in ninja terms, especially for someone of his skill level, that meant he'd just run several miles. And to top it all off, instead of running through the bamboo, he'd taken a page from Luo's book and done his run on top of the tall stalks. Segare didn't care what anyone said, running on bamboo was not fun or easy. The stalks would bend and sway, making even landing on one a test of skill, and when you did land, they sank. Stay on one long enough after hitting it at the speed he'd been going, and it'd carry you right down to the ground. Which meant you had to move quickly, precisely, and very very carefully if you wanted to stay above the forest.

Segare sighed as his breathing slowed back to normal, and stood up fully once more, leaning back against a particularly stiff stalk and flexing his feet to try and work the soreness out of them before Luo arrived. The last few days had been hectic after his first attempt at getting the man alone, but now they had managed to wrangle a few hours of free time and Segare took the opportunity. He'd been pleased when Luo agreed, and started out immediately to look for a good place for the spar, getting as far from home as possible so the kids couldn't find them. Luo should have been right behind him, so should be arriving soon, and once they'd both caught their breath, they could start.

๑๑๑๑ Hot on Segare's trail, Luo followed the man to a clearing he said he'd found for them to continue their intended spar. Although Luo was somewhat tentative of not only his own skill but showing his skills, he had to admit he was curious as to how well Segare handled the rather ostentatious sword at his side. Keeping a moderate pace behind the man, as usual making sure not to outright reveal how fast he actually was, he watched the older councilor's body dip down into what he perceived to be a clearing. Following suit, Luo headed for the area ahead. Admittedly, along the way he'd noticed Segare lacked a certain level of skill when it came to running atop the bamboo stalks. He as expected was a quick learner that was no question, however he lacked a certain finesse in the movement. It was all about the placement of the feet followed by timing, and precision. One had to hit each stalk precisely to 'shock' it into not swaying either way for the split second your foot needed to be there. Shrugging slightly, he figured it would come in due time to him.

After about fifteen seconds, Luo front-flipped into the clearing, turning around to face Segare after he landed. Finding him on what seemed to be the last leg lunge, Luo backed up a few feet to give them both room, cupping his left shoulder with his right hand as he stretched the left arm, reversing the stretch after ten seconds. Looking back towards Segare, Luo posed a question. "Other than avoiding death and serious injury, are there any other rules we should lay down before starting? I'd hate for either of us to step out of line without the knowing why we were out of line."

"Sounds good to me." Segare responded, pushing away from the tree and simply switching to rolling his shoulders. They weren't really affected by the run, but it was better to have them loose before a spar like this. "Just to make it interesting though, how about we include the rule I suggested before? No lying during the fight, and the loser has to answer one question truthfully." He grinned slightly as he remembered that when he suggested the rule before, Luo had questioned how the "prize" had any value. Luo was clever though, and he was sure he'd have figured it out in time, though it was doubtful he'd put much energy towards it during the scramble of the last few days.

"And if you haven't figured it out already, I never said you had to answer questions during the fight." the man said with a slight smirk. It devalued the rule to openly reveal the catch like that, but Luo would have figured it out anyways, and with them both knowing, it just meant they would be less inclined to break the rule and lie about something they'd rather keep private. Well, that and word games were fun, and both knowing the full extent of the rules would make filtering and sorting the information that much more interesting.

Giving his shoulders one last twist, Segare stepped half a step forward, letting his hands fall loosely to his sides. To a novice it would probably look like he was completely open to attack. To a professional... Well it probably still looked that way, but he was a ninja, and had faith in his reflexes and ability to move before anything particularly bad happened.
"I'm ready when you are." he intoned, watching the other man warily. Luo had made quite a show since they'd met in person, of not showing anything at all. It was easy enough to tell by his movements sometimes that he was holding himself back, but even that gave no hint of how much was hidden. So, just in case, he needed to be ready to move at an instant's notice.

๑๑๑๑ After suggesting to include the rule he'd suggested the first time they met and explaining what he meant, it forced the conversation from the recesses of his mind back to the forefront. In recent days, he'd shoved the conversation away for later as things continued to get hectic around the camp. He had completely forgotten about it until the man began to mention it, almost being able to visualize the words he said the last time as he spoke them again. Then he mentioned the bit about not having to outright answer any of the questions during their spar. It was this originally that had put Luo off to the idea before, although he supposed had he actually sat and thought on it the answer would've revealed itself before today. Nodding in agreement to the terms at hand, Luo spent the next moment rolling his shoulders forwards and backwards and found himself surprised to find Segare standing as loosely as he had intended to. He was a confident opponent, that was something Luo rather liked. People who tended to take an initial stance gave away in that moment how they fought. A zero-point stance tended to be the sign of a well versed shinobi.

As Segare opted to ask Luo to begin it seemed, the young man grinned earnestly. He had learned through modesty in recent years that he had become too modest. That was to say of course, that he had learned the hard way within his clan that modesty was simply not necessary with those who were capable. In that sense, Luo saw Segare in his stance as someone worth forgoing the modesty of battle, instead relishing the physical rebuttal that was to come.

Pulling the only kunai he had with him from its pouch, he spun it around his finger for six seconds before pressing forward, taking cautious care to approach at the same speed he'd matched with Segare since they'd met. He was never sure how observant the man was, however if there was one thing difficult to actually track, it was speed. Luo to the best of his knowledge, did well to keep limber whenever he moved, taking care to not seem too tense as if he were holding back. In other areas however, that may have not been the case. In face, Luo hoped someone he trusted to be astute enough to take care of his coffers was capable of noticing such subtleties in people. In fact, he hoped any councilor was capable of just that.

His speed was certainly not one to be taken lightly, and in fact he had been somewhat impressed with Segare's ability to maintain such a high speed throughout their trek up here. It served to prove to Luo that he was more than just a man of means, but a man of his word as a shinobi. His first strike was a simple diagonal slash from the left side of Segare's elbow, up towards the right side of his neck. The weapon with which he attacked was of course the one and only kunai he kept with him, clutched within his right hand as it lunged forward, left hand poised to recoil upon physical response from the man. It was an opening strike, one which Luo was beyond sure Segare saw coming. It was how the man responded that Luo was far more interested in. Even still, the ambitious Ushio tried to not throw caution to the wind based on his own talents. He knew well how easy it was as a shinobi to not only become surprised, but overwhelmed in that same instance by someone's skill. Heck, it was why most shinobi kept things to themselves until necessary.

Segare smiled as Luo made his move. A straight charge with a single kunai, a typical testing move to see how he'd react and set the pace for the battle. The normal expected reactions were to jump back and dodge, attempt to catch the attacker's arm, or meet them head on with a weapon of your own. Segare's smile widened as he decided to do none of those things. As soon as Luo was within striking distance, too close to abort, Segare's left arm flashed up and out, fingers splayed and five green threads of chakra leaping out from them, latching onto Luo's hand and weapon and yanking both to the side, the motion following his hand, but the strings stretching out to draw the younger man's hand away from them both.

Into this opening Segare twisted, his entire body following the motion of his left arm as his right leg rose from the ground, spinning into a sharp kick to Luo's midsection. He doubted it would do much, but Segare was never one to pass up the chance to get a hit in in the opening clash of a fight. Following the "Typical" opening moves of a spar was a weakness many shinobi fell prey to, as Segare had learned early on in his career to exploit what a well trained ninja expected their enemy to do. Whether Luo though, was stuck in that same rut or not, was yet to be seen, and this was a good chance to find out.

    Chakra: [67/72]

Chakura no Ito [Thread of Chakra]
    Rank: D
    Type: Ninjutsu | Supplementary
    Range: 30 Feet
    Prerequisites: Kabenobori
    Description:
Literally an extension of the Kabenobori technique, the user creates a long thread of chakra from their fingertip, which they can then maneuver and control at will. The string itself is intangible, though visible to all in the color of the user's chakra. The end of the string however, can be attached to an object, which can then be moved about by maneuvering the thread. The thread is able to withstand strength equal to the user's ninjutsu power as related to universal ninjutsu, but will break if it is forced any harder. However, the actual strength an object can be pulled with is equal to the user's strength, just as if they were pulling with a rope. The strings can also be used to lift objects into the air, and maneuver them about in that way, so long as the user is strong enough to do so.

Up to ten threads can be created simultaneously, one per fingertip. (Assuming the user does not have more nor less than ten fingers.) Chakra can be channeled through the strings, to activate any chakra activated object attached to the end, such as seals or chakra based technology. Each string costs one chakra point to create, and one to maintain every third post. This jutsu does not require seals nor incantation.

๑๑๑๑ As Luo struck forward, Segare's opening gambit was indeed something he had not expected, out of the ordinary. This was good, however the slight surprise in Luo's face didn't quite mimic how much he enjoyed now knowing personally that the man was not formulaic in his methods. As his eyebrows raised slightly and his eyes seemed to widened just a bit at the jerk of his hand towards the side, his response came swiftly. Using the momentum given to him by the harsh tug, Luo cartwheel flipped towards his captured hand, forming a thin chakra blade along the side of the kunai which cut through the strings quickly with his momentum as he moved through the air. Before his feet hit the ground however, Luo launched the kunai across his chest towards the top of Segare's outstretched and open foot.

As he landed, Luo twisted his body a few degrees to the left to face Segare once more, launching forward and dipping down near immediately and spinning his body, attempting to sweep the man off his foot before he could regain full balance. With his left hand planted on the ground to support the spin, as his body turned he removed three senbon with his right hand, gripping one between each finger forming a set of faux hand claws. Should he not be interrupted or caught, his intention was to rise up after the 360 degree turn and slash upwards from the man's midsection to his chest. However, he didn't know how this scenario would play out.

    Chakra Ken [Chakra Blade]
    Rank: D
    Type: Bukijutsu | Supplementary
    Description:
By concentrating chakra around an object, usually a bladed weapon, the user creates a second blade of the same length along the weapon. This blade is razor sharp, and able to cut through almost anything not protected by it's own chakra coating, including some softer metals such as tin, gold, and low quality iron such as that used for kunai and shuriken. Being made of chakra also allows weapons covered by this jutsu to interact with non-solid chakra constructs. This jutsu can only be used on objects held in the user's hand, and the jutsu ends if contact with the weapon is lost. Costs an additional point of chakra every other post to maintain after three posts.

Segare smirked as Luo pulled a cartwheel, snapping his strings and shifting around to make his own attack. Good, he would have been a bit disappointed if it'd been that easy to catch him. As Luo threw his kunai, Segare bent his legs slightly, bringing the heel of the raised foot even with the other man's kunai and charging chakra through his foot to catch it and hold it to his sole. Simultaneously he extended his other leg once more, pushing himself up and into the air. Immediately upon going airborne, he pulled his limbs close and sent himself into a rapid spin, flying over the top of Luo's head as the man was by now beginning his sweep.

Cutting the flow of chakra to his foot, Segare let the kunai fly once more towards his opponent and cut his spin short, coming to a landing a few feet behind Luo's new position, his flight having been given momentum by his original motion. Instead of moving to attack, the man instead hopped back a few paces, returning to a relaxed stance, but laying his right hand on the hilt of his sword. For the next round, he'd use the weapon.

"How old were you when you started?" he suddenly asked, deciding to start the conversation with something simple. It wasn't something incredibly personal, just an interesting bit of trivia about his new ally. Not to mention it'd give him a better measuring rod as to the speed of their individual growth in skill.

    Chakra: [66/72]

    Kabenobori [Wall Walking]
    Rank: D
    Type: Ninjutsu | Supplementary
    Description:
Wall walking, or the art of walking on walls, is a chakra exercise ninja utilize to stick themselves to surfaces they could not normally stay on. Most notably, walking up a vertical surface as if it were the ground. This technique can be used on any solid surface, with any part of your body. If you really wanted, you could attach your elbows to the ceiling and hang by them. Besides it's basic use of clinging to surfaces, this can be used to pick up and hold objects with parts of your body that could not do so normally, such as the soles of your feet.

This is a passive ability, and as such does not require seals nor incantation after it has been learned. Use of the technique costs one point of chakra every post it is active for, doubled if you are carrying another person or object equal to your own size or weight (Per person/object). There is no time limit on this jutsu.

๑๑๑๑ Watching as he began to spin the man catch the kunai with his foot, Luo grinned. He was clever, definitely clever. Watching in that instance the shadow he cast on the ground as he vaulted up, Luo rounded his spin and jumped forward, performing a perfect five-point roll as the kunai stuck into the soft earth. Spinning around up and onto his feet, he watched the man place a hand on his hilt. Luo didn't make the same motion however, although he was certainly ready to reveal his own blade when the time came.

At last, a question was posed in that instance, something that Luo didn't find offensive. "Within our clan, we are taught from the moment we can run with confidence. I was four. I chose my primary weapon of choice as well as my projectile of choice at age seven, and trained from then on in bukijutsu and ninjutsu until being deemed capable of field work at eleven. You?" Luo supposed he somewhat wasted his first question, however he was just as curious to know when Segare had started. Not only this, but Luo knew courtesy and politeness well. With an equal, one did not simply cross a verbal line without leading up to it in earnest. He'd have to wait to get to the real questions he gathered, and he was sure Segare felt the same.

Segare whistled at the revelation of how young Luo had begun his training. It seemed unthinkable to him, as at that age he'd been more interested in playing with his toys than trying to learn to fight. If he needed anything to prove how different clan life was from his own, that did it.
"No clan here." Segare shrugged, taking his time to answer the question before doing anything else. "Learned to use a sword at fifteen, tried to join the village guard a few years later but my father blocked me out. We argued, I left, and fell in with ninja. Never really stopped learning since."

Segare gave a small grin as he finished speaking, before suddenly leaning forward and lunging towards his opponent, kicking off hard enough to leave an indent in the ground where he was standing, and arriving within striking distance of Luo an instant later. His sword slid free of it's sheath, smooth as silk, and flashed through the air in a horizontal left to right slash across Luo's chest. This was one attack he was actually hoping wouldn't land, both because their head of military and fellow council leader should be able to avoid such a straight forward attack, and also because he'd used the same move to completely bisect a fair few bandits in the past.

๑๑๑๑ As expected, Segare wasn't from any clan. He figured by this point if he were, he'd have known that much about the older man. The information was certainly interesting however, as comparatively it seemed their time on the field was more or less the same. He pondered just how the man fell in with shinobi exactly, since they weren't exactly the trusting type, especially when it came to those who seemed wealthy. Furthermore, he wondered what compelled his father to forcibly deter him from joining the village guard. In fact, now that Luo thought about it Segare's father had to have had a decently high station in the village to be able to pull something like that off. Perhaps the man was worried for the boy.

Nodding towards Segare who seemed to grin to indicate his answer was complete, he leaned forward as if coiling his body for movement. Luo didn't seem to move much however if at all. Watching the man launch forward, Luo instantly noticed his rate of acceleration. Unless Segare had just as well been holding himself back, something Luo somewhat doubted, the man had reached his full speed instantaneously. There was a technique capable of such a feat, one Luo had learned himself. Still, he simply was not sure whether the man was a practitioner of Shukuchi, or just faster than previously examined.

The ease with which the man drew his sword was something Luo recognized as sheer skill. So far, it looked like the man didn't keep the sword around just for show. The moment a glint of steel escaped the sheath however, Luo's hands sprung into action. With one fluid motion, Luo twisted his body from his center of gravity towards his left as his right hand reached behind him. Popping a latch hidden just above his own hilt, Luo quickly unsheathed his setsuka, a type of sword that was two inches shy of normal katana length, however thinner and therefore sharper. As it came around his body quickly, he held it diagonally to his chest, a few sparks erupting as Segare's weapon clashed with his own.

Luo's stance although neutral, was typical of those who practiced battōjutsu, the art of drawing the sword. Often, it was used to draw the enemy closer and surprise them with the speed and precision of a draw, however its uses as a defense were just as well handy. As they clashed, Luo's black ivory hilt contrasting well with the golden hilt of his opponent, Luo decided to pose the next question. "You said you fell in with ninja. What sorts of jobs did you take on originally?"

Segare was pleased as Luo easily blocked the attack, hardly even moving from his spot. The appearance of the blade he used was interesting, as he hadn't seen it before, which meant it must have been hidden in that umbrella Luo carried with him. But not only did Luo easily block the attack, he also casually asked the next question, a fact that would have made Segare laugh if he weren't currently clashing blades.
"Well," the man began, shifting his position slightly so as to hold the stalemate more easily while he spoke. "The group I met was one of the nomad groups. They liked to follow caravans around and sell themselves as guards. I'd joined the caravan myself, and when we were attacked by some bandits I suppose I impressed them with my sword skills enough to get me in with them."

Cutting his answer short, Segare suddenly pushed the clashing swords hard to the right, while twisting his own body in towards Luo and to the left. Rather than make a move to attack the opening though, he rushed straight past, dragging his sword along behind him such that it would run down Luo's hilt and then across his body if he didn't adjust to block it. One thing about Segare's swordsmanship that he liked to claim put him above normal swordsmen, was that he didn't shackle himself to a style. He didn't learn a style, avoided doing so in fact. Instead, he learned to fight, using the sword as simply an extension of himself, and to date, it had worked quite well. Most trained swordsmen didn't expect their opponent to completely abandon any semblance of style to get in a cheap shot or two.

Finishing his pass, Segare spun around to fully face Luo again a few feet past him, grinning happily and holding his sword up at around shoulder level, tip facing the younger man. The fight wasn't serious yet to be sure, but it was definitely fun.
"So I suppose for my early missions I mostly did escorts. It was awhile before I got into many other types." Remaining quiet for a moment, Segare considered returning the same question, but with further thought, it didn't matter much. Clan children usually started out with fairly basic missions. Practice missions really that were just an extension of their training. He'd heard of some missions that would pit two teams of genin against each other, one team delivering some mail to practice a basic delivery, the other trying to steal it to practice ambush and interception. He supposed it would be interesting to know if Luo had started out that way too, but there was something a bit deeper he wanted to prod at instead.

"How about we take things up a notch?" he asked, twisting his sword a bit to indicate that he meant to fight as well as, as would become clear a moment later, his next question. "How old were you for your first kill?" The question was a lot more personal than the others had been so far. For one as long in the business as he or Luo had been, it was easy enough to say they had their fair share of kills. But the first kill was something different. Often, it would mark the sort of shinobi the person would become, or if they would remain one at all. How the kill was made, how they felt afterwards, even who it was or how old the ninja, or the victim for that matter were could all factor together to dictate how the ninja treated life and death from that point on. All together, they made it an intensely personal moment, but also one that could help him gauge his new ally's future habits and actions.

Just want to note, Battle instinct requires an actual style stance be taken. Since we don't currently have any styles available, and you don't know any yet as a result, it wouldn't really do anything in this situation. Which is fine though, cause really, you could have blocked that anyways.

A thought though, maybe we should make some "Universal" stances that would benefit from those benefits.

๑๑๑๑ The answer was simple, nothing too in depth of course. However, if his sword skill was enough to impress mercenary shinobi groups even then, he had to be worth a match in that sense. As the man shoved the swords to the side, and dashed the other way, Luo twisted his weapon down and backwards before the hilt was struck, holding it parallel to his exposed right side. Twisting around to face the man, bringing his sword to his side parallel to his leg, he listened to Segare speak again.

He then added a bit of information to his story, mentioning his beginnings were mainly escort missions, something that wasn't uncommon. Most of Luo's missions when he was younger in fact were mainly escort missions, although granted some involved a higher level of risk than usual. His clan never put anyone on the field that wasn't ready to deal with unknown risks, which meant most of his training and tests to determine if he would be ready for field work involved splitting children into squads against each other for varying missions. In the end, the final test usually involved an unexpected ambush by a full squad on one who had been purposely separated. The test was to see how each individual handled high stress situations, the opposition usually wearing masks to heighten the stress and force one to assume the ambush was not from Ushio at all. It was the willingness to kill in this situation among other things that usually determined how ready for field work one was.

Nodding towards Segare's question, Luo held his sword slightly farther out, twisting the sword to indicate he was just as well ready. The next thing he asked was something Luo had not talked about in years. In fact, he had not talked about it since it happened considering Ushio tended not to dwell on it. It wasn't odd for many shinobi factions to celebrate a first kill, usually something that marked the shinobi as truly "coming of age". For Ushio however, it simply meant one party had a stronger will to survive than the other. It had happened in a flash, or at least that was how Luo remembered it. There was so much going on in the immediate area, it almost seemed as if the field fell silent with the roar of clashing factions.

"Twelve, three weeks before turning thirteen. I was taken by surprise, cause of death was a senbon to the trachea." The answer seemed simple, however even Segare knew the first kill always held more than just the basics. In that moment however, Luo had simply 'reacted' as most Ushio tended to do in combat before even realizing it. In fact, if it weren't for his uncle jumping to his side, he wouldn't have seen the man fall to the ground gasping for air. However, just like that he was thrown back into battle, forced to kill twice more in the same bout before they were done. He didn't have time to reflect on it until that night, and even then it was difficult to focus after such an event such as that night. His grandfather mentioned it in passing a week or so later, only telling Luo he was glad to see him alive and well. He gathered that was Hideki's way of consoling him on the matter.

Tilting his head up as if getting Segare's attention Luo muttered, "And you?"

Luo's answer was simplistic, clinical even, and if there was anything to be drawn from it, Segare couldn't see it. The manner it was presented in implied it was either something Luo didn't like to think about, or just didn't care to think about, both of which could be for countless reasons. Simply nodding, Segare decided to leave it be either way. He wanted to get to know the man, not antagonize him by picking at things he didn't want to share. When Luo returned the question to him without making a move to continue the fight, Segare nodded again, beginning to slowly pace to the side, never taking his eyes, or the point of his blade, off Luo.

"Seventeen." he began, speaking, but not ceasing his movement as he began a slow circle around the edge of the clearing. "Same day I fell in with the ninja. The caravan was attacked by bandits, and I joined the fight, young kid that I was." He paused long enough to wink in Luo's direction, recognizing that he was just now about the same age as he'd been at the time, before his expression turned serious again. "They pulled a diversion and drew off the ninja, but I stuck with the wagons. Three bandits surrounded me, and I thought I was done for. It was fight or flight, but behind me was a wagon full of kids... I managed to surprise one of them with an opening shot, and just barely held the others off until the ninja got back and finished them. Didn't even have time to think about it until the battle was over and the Jounin was offering me a drink." he finished with a shake of his head.

Usually if someone goaded that story out of him, the wagon was full of gold and he beat all three on his own without a scratch. But he'd called for honesty, and Luo deserved the truth or nothing after he'd given his own. That fight had been the first and last time in his life he'd been sure he was about to die. He would have died if the jounin, the man who had become his sensei, had been even seconds later in coming to his aid. The man had stayed with him the rest of the night after the fight, never pushing or even bringing the subject up, but just giving him someone to talk to, to keep his mind focused elsewhere. He'd never gotten the broken feeling some people did after their first kill, never the guilt, or anything beyond the recognition of what he'd done, and he attributed that to his sensei's presence. The man had just kept him talking, asking about everything from his favorite childhood games, to why he'd run away from home. The closest they ever came to talking about his kill was when the man asked why he didn't run, when there had been a path open to flee the whole time. And while he said earlier that it was his sword skills that got him into the band of ninja, he rather suspected it had actually been his use of them to defend those kids, at the cost of his own life.

๑๑๑๑ As Segare continued to move, he spoke the age at which he'd killed. Beginning to move parallel to the man in a circle, he listened carefully. It seemed simple enough, something Luo could see someone like Segare getting himself involved with despite not necessarily needing to do so. The story was earnest as the man admitted it wasn't an easy task to fend the men off. When there were children involved however, most people who were capable tended to fight with all they had. It was rare for someone not to take action when innocent people were involved, at least people with morals. Before Luo knew it, the story was over however, muttering with a nod "I see."

Quickly, his left foot slid out and his right hopped forward, springing forward into action. This time however, Luo neglected to forcefully hold back his natural speed. The man had said after all they should 'kick things up a notch', and Luo was more than willing to do that after the question that was just asked. Sword outstretched behind him, Luo waited until ten feet in front of the man to grab the umbrella on his back and swing it out and in front of him, unlatching the runner which allowed the umbrella to actually open simultaneously. As Luo used the full umbrella to block the man's view of the sword crossing behind the umbrella horizontal to his body, he tilted it slightly upwards and lowered his center of gravity, slashing back towards the right horizontally at the man's legs just below the kneecaps.

The umbrella although black glinted slightly, and Luo was sure Segare had noticed how rigid it was. It was made of metal, bearing the Ushio clan symbol in midnight blue in the four cardinal directions. Luo's umbrella had more uses that hidden storage and protecting from the rain, this one being his primary in battle. It was used both for swordplay subterfuge, as well as light shielding. Being able to expose and collapse the umbrella in quick succession made the weapon perfect to use as a somewhat of a more portable shield that was harder to predict. He certainly hoped Segare was up to the task.
