"There, that's it..." Ithric murmured, his fingers skimming along the tops of Tohru's arms, as he delicately guided the smaller Kiandri into a flowed position befitting that of any Peisio. The younger male's biggest argument, that he wasn't a Peisio, so he didn't need to move like one, had died pretty quickly. The older man notched Tohru's foot out a little farther, then tapped his wrist upward to bring his arm into "balance," as he said, with the rest of his body.
Tohru's brow furrowed. "Isn't dancing supposed to be a fun form of self expression?" He grumbled, only half to himself. Ithric seemed to be positioning him fairly precisely. Too much for just a simple dance, anyway.
The Peisio chuckled. "Well, yes." He admitted. "If you weren't using it to defend yourself and as a form of training." His foot collided with the side of the smaller boy's, sending Tohru into a very near split with a yelp of pain. Sand sprayed up where he skidded his foot through it to try and prevent himself from falling. "Now don't stand so rigidly." Ithric admonished. "You were decently versatile against Ravi. Don't let me keep you from that." He tutted and offered a hand out so that Tohru could pull himself back into position.
Once he was standing the way he had been before Ithric had jarred him, the older Dovaa moved a few feet away and mirrored him. Ithric had much more poise and practice than Tohru did. When he moved, it was like gravity couldn't even muster the will to control him. While the Kiandri's feet sank into the sand with every step, Ithric's seemed to just ghost over the top of it. His toes left tiny swirls and designs in the wake of where he'd moved. After only a few steps of pathetic mockery, Tohru had to just stop his own attempts and watch.
After a few steps, a tendril of water rose from the ocean. It followed Ithric's lead, dancing unwavering at his side and flicking out at his command. It swirled around him, ran the length of his arm and plumed from his fingertips. The older Dovaa jumped, spiraling through the air and catching command of the water with one of his feet before landing in an elegant crouch, coercing his element back to his fingertips and swirling back into an upright stance again. It followed his movements, and he guided it silently and fluidly back into the rippling expanse of the ocean.
When Ithric turned back to his young charge, Tohru's eyes were as good as shining in the dimming rays of the sun. "You're beautiful." He whispered, but the words were carried off by the wind before they had a chance to reach the Peisio's ears.
The older man approached him, holding a hand out in invitation. "Maybe you'll be more interested if we dance together as a warm-up." He offered. "At least I'll be able to stop you from quitting mid-way."
Yes. He wanted with an almost painful intensity to be able to move even remotely like that. He reached out to take the offered hand, but as the tips of his fingers brushed against Ithric's, he glanced down. "I... I can't do anything like that..." He whispered, drawing his limb back toward himself.
Ithric's fingers wrapped around his wrist, pulling him forward a pace. "That's not true." He replied softly. "I mean, it wouldn't be the same, obviously. But you're very capable of doing amazing things." The Peisio turned his navy gaze out across the sea. "My ocean is out there. It's something tangible, that all can see. But without it, I would be pretty useless." He turned back to the little Kiandri with a smile. "You have the advantage, since your 'ocean' is in here." He said, giving Tohru's chest a tap.
The Kiandri tipped his head, glancing down in confusion at the digits that had prodded him right in the sternum. Ocean...? It took him a few seconds to realize that Ithric had mistaken his statement for doubt about his magic, rather than his dancing ability. Tohru flushed shyly and shook his head. Oh well, it didn't really matter. "I'll try." He murmured, letting himself step back toward his companion. Surely Ithric didn't expect much of him. The worst thing he could do was disappoint the older man.
The Peisio took the step that would draw him chest-to-chest with the smaller boy, and Tohru had to glance away to keep himself from flushing. He'd never really been this close to anyone who wasn't family. And even then it never felt... intimate, even with his fiance. But... He looked out to the rippling ocean, turning a dark purpley hue in the dying rays from the sun. Was Ithric this open with everyone? Did he really not care that he was asking to dance with a boy nearly half his age?
One of Ithric's hands settled on his hip and the other brushed his cheek to draw his attention back to the taller Peisio. "We have to keep eye contact so I know what you're thinking and can move the way you need me to."
The Kiandri's face reddened as he locked eyes with Ithric out of pure mortification. "Y-you can't read-!" He squeaked in alarm, his golden orbs wide with embarrassment and a little bit of terror.
Ithric chuckled and reached out to thread his fingers through Tohru's. "Maybe not. But the eyes are the windows to the soul. I can at least figure out how to dance with you." He pulled the Kiandri's hand up to settle on his shoulder, then took his free hand in his own. "You don't have to worry. It's your first time, isn't it? I'll go slow."
With a soft whine, Tohru nodded in agreement. It wasn't like he had a choice. He was already in this far. Backing out now would probably just upset his older companion. He swallowed and allowed himself to be wrapped firmly in Ithric's hold. He tried very hard to keep his gaze up and meeting the Peisio's, but it felt awkward, and looking at Ithric just made Tohru feel humiliated. Even though he couldn't see their dance, as he'd watched Ithric's, he could tell it was nothing like the way the older man had moved without him. Even now his companion's footfalls were light, slow, and smooth. Tohru didn't have any trouble keeping up with him. It just seemed... unlikely that he would ever look as beautiful as Ithric.
"Are you afraid?" The taller man murmured, leaning down to brush the Kiandri's skin.
The light touch drew Tohru's attention, and he zoned back to his companion's face. "W-what? I- No, I'm not afraid..." He answered uncertainly.
Ithric spun, lifting the smaller boy so that his pointed toes dragged lightly across the ground. He let Tohru's weight rest in the sand again, before plucking up his arm and giving the boy a twirl. "I don't mean right now. I mean when you're fighting. Are you afraid of getting hurt? Is that why you stall the way you do?"
The Kiandri sighed. "Do you like getting hurt?" He retorted, as he stepped in time and rhythm with his partner.
"No." Ithric replied with a shrug. "But I don't cower from pain. I believe in my abilities to defend and protect myself. Hesitation mid-step is what will hurt you. Follow through with everything you've got. Don't let yourself be deterred." His foot hooked around Tohru's and slid out, forcing the smaller boy's legs out from under him with a yelp of surprise. He pulled up on his arm and pushed him back.
Tohru's heart stopped. The pools of blue that were Ithric's eyes swam from his vision. The ocean spun up into the sky. Already the Kiandri anticipated his back hitting the sand and the wind being knocked from his lungs. If Ithric had been in his place, he doubted the graceful Peisio would crash to the ground like he was. But if he was his companion, what would he do? Time slowed. He looked out. Ithric had released his arm, and Tohru was floating free-form in the air, heading straight for the ground. He bent his knees and pushed away from the Peisio, his feet planting solidly on the taller male's chest to launch himself away. He flipped through the air, coiling around himself to bring him the right way up once again.
Tohru landed on his feet in a low crouch, toes burying into the sand. His golden orbs snapped up to find the older male. He'd kicked Ithric. Without really thinking about it, of course, but that didn't mean it didn't happen. The Peisio had only staggered a few steps away. From what the Kiandri could tell, he hadn't even made him hit the ground. "I-I'm sorr-"
Ithric strode forward that few steps, his fingers brushing against the smaller boy's face. "No need. You did well. Tohru." He smiled in a way that the Kiandri would almost call fond, if he didn't know better. "But that's enough for now. It'll be pitch black before long. Let's go see if we can sleep in one of those caves." He suggested, gesturing to the crags of Ayr's mountains behind them.
~~~
Tohru followed silently and dutifully behind the Peisio as they departed the beach and headed toward the rocky outcroppings. His bare feet certainly remembered the tiny pebbles that dug into his heels from this horrid rocky wasteland. But... Already this particular endeavor seemed like it could actually yield good memories. It looked at Ithric from beneath his lashes as the man scrutinized the distance between one of the caves in the cliffs above, and the ground.
He'd never met anyone even remotely like Ithric before. No one Tohru knew would spare his sorry a** a second look. But Ithric did. Ithric wanted to help him, make him a better Dovaa. The Peisio was the purest embodiment of what Tohru thought all Dovaa should strive to be. He was gentle, thoughtful, generous, kind... Tohru didn't even deserve to look at him, let alone think he had some right to be in his presence.
"C'mon. It should be an easy climb. It'll get us away from predators on the ground at least, and it seems too low to be a good nest for dragons." Ithric surmised, turning to blink back at the little Kiandri.
Tohru bolted in surprise but nodded. "Y-yes! If you think so..."
The Peisio beamed. "You'd best go first so I can catch you if you slip." At the boy's hesitance, Ithric rolled his eyes. "Go on, then."
Tohru looked up the side of the cliff. It wasn't terribly high. Even if he fell, it seemed unlikely that he would die unless his cracked his head against the stone... Still, falling wasn't something he was interested in. The sky was nearly black, though. There wasn't time to find anything closer to the ground. He swallowed, then put a shaking hand against the wall. As soon as there was enough space between him and the ground, Ithric followed. The wind blew and howled. Tohru feared it would pluck him right from the rocks and toss him to the ground.
But it didn't. The Kiandri's fingers gripped the lip of the cave, and soon his golden orbs were peeking into the dark hole. He clambered up, then immediately reached an arm down to grab onto Ithric and help pull him up. The taller man sighed contentedly and gave his companion's shoulder a pat in thanks. he rose to his feet and took a step forward, then paused. "Do you hear that?" He murmured, voice low and tight.
Over the howling wind? No. Tohru didn't hear a thing. He shook his head then moved to stand at the Peisio's side. He squinted into the darkness, but saw absolutely nothing, either. Then, like a light bulb clicking on, he remembered his magic. Lightning. Even a spark sent through the cave should be enough light to see if there was anything worth being frightened of. He raised his hand, and with a click of his fingers sent a tiny volt into the cave. It fizzled out in a matter of moments. His golden orbs widened in surprise.
"Get down!" Ithric roared, his palm smashing into Tohru's shoulder and sending him staggering to the side as a spear whizzed past where they'd both been standing. A tribe. A whole family of two legged creatures slept in that cave. And the Dovaas had awoken them. Now they were itching for a fight. Ithric spun away and kicked one of the ordon in the back as it ran at him, sending the creature plummeting to the ground below. The Peisio didn't carry a vial of water, but he didn't need to. He'd long since learned that water was all around him. And on Ayr's humid peaks, that was exceptionally true.
He pulled the mist from the air, coagulating it into a water whip that he snapped out at one of the creatures that ran at the young boy. "I need you to help me, Tohru!" He shouted. "I can splash them all in one swoop, but you'll have to finish them! Water conducts electricity! But you'll need to make it powerful enough to kill them!"
Tohru felt his muscles clench. The paralyzing fear of battle swamped him even in Ithric's presence. "I need you!" The Peisio repeated as he ducked beneath an ordon's fist. Ithric said he wasn't even a battler. But he was fighting now. He was quick and decisive. And he defended the tiny patch of cliff the two Dovaa shared. Tohru had to do his best to keep Ithric alive, if nothing else. He nodded.
"Okay!" The Peisio grinned. He whipped his hands through the air, drawing a hearty sum of moisture from around him. He flicked it out at the ordons. then did it with another and another. "Whenever you're ready would be just great." He ground out as Tohru only watched.
He hated his magic.
But now he needed it. This group of ordons could easily overpower them and through them from the cliffs. He would hate himself if he let them hurt Ithric, the only person who'd ever wanted to help him. With a new found spark of determination, Tohru moved to the Peisio's side, careful to stay out of range of his ever flicking fingers and kicking feet.
Just one was all he'd need.
He felt his magic clawing at his insides, ever present as always. While he usually did his best to ignore it, now he let it free. It skated from his chest and out to his arms, nipping and biting at his skin as it moved. No matter how he tried, he could never stop it from hurting him. For trying to control something as wild as lightning, he supposed he deserved it. But after it finished punishing him, it obliged his wishes. It leaped from his fingers and assailed the ordons that Ithric was doing his best to hold back.
His lightning caught the water of his companion and bolted through the beastly attackers. they screeched and flinched and twitched and... died. Finally. He could smell the smoke he caused from frying the group of ordon. It made him sick.
